BREAKING: The Biden admin halted arms shipments to Israel. Where is @SpeakerJohnson? You said if Biden does this, you will intervene.

If this shipment was approved by Congress I don’t think Biden can halt it. And if he is stopping it for political reasons (Michigan) it is an impeachable offense. It will be interesting to see what Mike Johnson does.

Turns out too much humanitarian aid entered northern Gaza, @kann_news
reports; foreign aid groups are now asking to reduce scope of goods as quantities are too high, IDF says. Reports of food crisis in Gaza were always inflated. The aid mostly benefited Hamas.

Ron Ben-Yishai now: "Hamas just solved the dilemma for Israel; after the horrible tragedy today, there is no doubt anymore that the IDF needs to go into Rafah and clean it, otherwise no Israeli will be able to live in the south ever again, Hamas is emboldened by the US position and the demonstration in the US and feel that if they just hold on for a little bit more, the US and the West will stop the war"

If Israel runs out of ammo because we withheld it that only pushes them closer to the Samson option. If it looks like they will fall they will take others with them. Biden is incredibly reckless!

Do you see the bait and switch?

They were able to pass the Ukraine funding by agreeing to fund Israel and then once they got it passed, they're "holding" the ammunition from Israel that the funding provided.

They didn't hold back the $9 billion for Hamas.

A lot of Jews and Muslims must die in order to send money and F-16s to Ukraine.

And I'm pretty ok with it.
Are you sure that you're pretty OK with it?

Sending money and F-16's to Ukraine will mean more Ukrainians and Russians will die. Are you saying that you want more Israelis, Palestinians, Ukrainians and Russians to die?

Israeli Radio: The army began evacuating Palestinian civilians from Rafah before launching an attack.

Joe Truzman
@JoeTruzman

IDF says it is asking residents of Eastern Rafah to evacuate.

Full IDF statement:

There has been a surge of humanitarian aid going into Gaza. The IDF has expanded the humanitarian area in Al- Mawasi to accommodate the increased levels of aid flowing into Gaza. This expanded humanitarian area includes field hospitals, tents and increased amounts of food, water, medication and additional supplies.

In accordance with the approval of the government, an ongoing situation assessment will guide the gradual movement of civilians in the specified areas, to the humanitarian area.

Calls to temporarily move to the humanitarian area will be conveyed through posters, SMS messages, phone calls and media broadcasts in arabic.

The IDF will continue pursuing Hamas everywhere in Gaza until all the hostages that they’re holding in captivity are back home.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told his American counterpart, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, in a phone call overnight that Israel was left with no choice but to launch its offensive in southern Gaza's Rafah.

Gallant updated Austin on the deadly rocket barrage from Rafah on an IDF position on the border, his office says.

The minister detailed "the many efforts that the State of Israel is making to reach an [agreement] for the release of hostages and a temporary ceasefire, and said that at this stage Hamas refuses any proposal that would allow this."

He told Austin that "there was no choice left and the meaning was the start of the Israeli operation in Rafah."

"Gallant thanked the secretary of defense for the close cooperation, and emphasized that the US has an important role in advancing the dialogue for the release of the hostages held captive by Hamas," the ministry adds.

Fighter jets struck several Hamas positions in southern Gaza's Rafah overnight, in the area from which a deadly rocket attack was carried out yesterday, the military says.

The IDF says it hit sniper positions, buildings used by terror groups, and other infrastructure.

The strikes in Rafah come as ground troops continue to operate in central Gaza's Netzatim Corridor. In a recent incident, the IDF says reservists of the Yiftah Brigade spotted a cell of gunmen near them and called in an airstrike.

In other strikes across Gaza, the military says fighter jets hit booby-trapped buildings and rocket launching positions. A helicopter also struck a building used by gunmen to fire at troops, the IDF adds.

Palestinians flee from the eastern side of the southern Gaza city of Rafah after the Israeli army orders them to evacuate ahead of a military operation, in Rafah, Gaza Strip, Monday, May 6, 2024. - Associated Press - Monday, May 6, 2024

CAIRO — The Hamas militant group says it has accepted an Egyptian-Qatari cease-fire proposal to halt the seven-month war with Israel.

It issued a statement Monday saying its supreme leader, Ismail Haniyeh, had delivered the news in a phone call with Qatar’s prime minister and Egypt’s intelligence minister. The two Middle Eastern nations have been mediating months of talks between Israel and Hamas. There was no immediate comment from Israel.

The announcement came hours after Israel ordered Palestinians to begin evacuating the southern Gaza town of Rafah ahead of an Israeli military operation. Israel says Rafah is Hamas’ last stronghold.

News of Hamas’ announcement sent people in Rafah cheering in the streets.

Details of the proposal were not immediately released. But in recent days, Egyptian and Hamas officials have said the cease-fire would take place in a series of stages in which Hamas would release hostages it is holding in exchange for Israeli troop pullbacks from Gaza.

It is not clear whether the deal will meet Hamas’ key demand of bringing about an end to the war and complete Israeli withdrawal.

Hamas ceasefire plan, per Al Arabiya:

• Hamas agreed to a proposal for a ceasefire for 6 weeks

• A three-stage proposal that begins with a truce for 40 day

• The first phase includes a ceasefire and Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Valley

• The first stage includes the return of the displaced and the exchange of a number of prisoners

• The second and third stages include a truce for 42 days for each stage

NEW: Egypt sent a message to Israel demanding that it stop the ground operation in Rafah — Channel 14

U.S. President Joe Biden reportedly held a Half-Hour Phone Call this morning with Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in an attempt to dissuade him from launching a Ground Invasion of Rafah in the Southern Gaza Strip, which Administration Officials currently Fear may cause a Humanitarian Crisis without a “Proper Plan” for the Palestinian Population.

Israel should not accept any ceasefire agreement unless ALL hostages are released immediately. Israel has learned in the past you don't give in, they did it before and it came back to bite them. ALL hostages released or we attack! Biden never says anything about the Americans held. As everyone can see he doesn't give a rat's azz about American citizens held by a foreign country. If he cared at all he would have said we will support everything Israel is doing. We have a joke of a president!

Channel 12's Yuna Leibzon reports that when Biden and Netanyahu talked a few hours ago, the tone was more cordial than expected. Biden did not tell Israel not to go into Rafah but only said that they should evacuate the population. In other words, a yellow light.

It is possible that Bill Burns conveyed this to Qatar, helping to pressure Hamas to accept the deal. Most likely, Burns came to Doha with a carrot and stick formula, promising guarantees to end the war if a deal is accepted and threatening a Rafah invasion if they say no. This, along with the Israeli move to finally evacuate the population, had an effect on Hamas.
