Legendary stunt coordinator and second-unit director Vic Armstrong is making a very rare jump into the director’s chair for the rebooted Left Behind movie.

Armstrong is in negotiations to direct Nicolas Cage, who is making a deal to star in what producers hope will be a new trilogy based on the mega-successful Christian-themed books written by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins.
The movies were political thrillers that focused on the End of Days and the Rapture. Those Christian beliefs are again the focal point of the new movie, but the story will be more in the mold of a classic disaster film. The plot unfolds during the first few hours after the Rapture and focuses on the survivors.

Producers are working with a budget in the $15 million range and are aiming to shoot the first movie in spring 2013 in Baton Rouge, La.

Armstrong is an icon in the stunts and second-unit circles. He was Harrison Ford’s stunt double in Raiders of the Lost Ark (he’s the guy that goes flying head first out of the movie truck, then moments later slides underneath it using his whip) and Christopher Reeve's double in Superman and Superman II before turning to designing death-defying feats and action sequences.

His work encompasses stunt and second-unit work on Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the original Total Recall, the Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies, Mission: Impossible III, Thor and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Sounds good. The left behind series, especially the first book, would make a great movie if done with a decent budget.

Of course then we will have to deal with the debate of the atheists verses the believer and the pre tribs verses the non pre tribs. At some point, I hope everyone shuts up and enjoys a good movie.

There are already two out. Left Behind I and II with Kirk Cameron as Buck.

I am looking forward to seeing the movie and will enjoy it even though Hollywood never gets anything right when it comes to the Bible. The only problem is, there are lots of people that don't read the Bible and will think that the Hollywood version is what the Bible really says. Then when it doesn't happen that way, they think it is proof the Bible is wrong.

I am in the last pages of the last book of that series. It is a bit of a let-down. I can't help but see the flawed doctrine all through it. As a fictitious adventure, it has some possibility. As a realistic preview it is a dismal failure.

You don't actually have to deal with it. You can just enjoy the film.

After Cage's bankruptcy he'll do any picture for $$.
I bet he negotiated a cool three mil per pic on this one.

He'll need ever penny of it. He still owes somewhere in the neighborhood of $7M in back taxes after recently paying $6.25M to the IRS. His 2 homes in New Orleans went into foreclosure and were sold at auction in 2009. How do these people go through so much money? Forbes reported that he was paid $40 million between June 2008 and June 2009.

I meant on this forum. Just look at all the debate some of the popular books caused. (harry potter, twilight, The hunger games, etc) since this is actually supposed to be a religious movie, I predict it will cause a big tiff between some groups.

yes, and I have watched them and enjoyed them. But this is supposed to be a reboot, which means they start again with book 1.

"A more mainstream direction" reads one of many paths to the One World Religion to me.

Cage is one of several actors the messages of the tptb are delivered through in movies such as "Knowing", "National Treasure 1 and 2", with intrigue and mystery, woven with history and spiritualism.

That book is fiction. This movie has nothing to do with truth. Some people take just about anything as religion anymore. Left Behind is totaly fable.

I guess the producers are using a defective calendar. Armageddon is this year, next year at the latest. We'll never get to see them. (seriously.......it's gonna take a miracle to avoid WWIII in the next 12 months)

Much as I respect Kirk Cameron as a person, there's no doubt Cage is much bigger box office. Everything will depend on the script, for those who like the books.

Since I don't agree with the books' theology anyway, I have no particular dog in that hunt.

I didn't want to say it..... but now that I see I am not the only one who looks at everything this way... DITTO!!!! -except that Armageddon will likely be 2016. Before then, we can see the US destroyed by a world war.

At work we talk about plans as much as 5 years out. I chuckle inside knowing that we will NEVER see them happen. Can't say that kind of stuff to many people.

I started reading the series. I'm glad I was buying them one at a time because by the third book, I couldn't tolerate the writing any longer. They were churning out those crappers as fast as they could, or so it seemed. Maybe when you've written three or four best sellers in a series, you think the reader won't notice.

Kirk Cameron is not even a D-level motion picture actor.
No way would they even put him in it as a cameo or anything else.
Also Cameron is not even a B-level TV actor.

Cage would attract an audience somewhat--but even his luster is waning.
Also this film will do more damage than good--because it will propel false ideas and false hopes like the original films did.

They rendered a whole class of the Christian Community brain dead and ineffective.

I read the entire Left Behind series. Toward the end of the series I was ticked at the rip off. The print size was extra large and the margins were way too wide. They could have told the whole story in 5 books instead of 10.

As a so-so writer myself (I'll win no awards) the books were cheesy and poorly written. There were some intriguing ideas mixed in there and some interesting plot points, but most of those come from the bible. Of course it is fiction, for a couple reasons. (1) The bible places this scenario in the future. (2) The books and movies are far, far too tame a portrayal of biblical descriptions of what is to occur in the end times. Heck, one would almost expect that, yes, it's gonna be kind of rough, but...Are you kidding? Demonic forces unleashed upon the earth? Rape, murder and mayhem everywhere you look plus the catastrophes and plagues described in Revelation, Ezekiel, Isaiah, etc. are unparalleled with anything ever to have happened before by far. Hitler and Stalin were rank amateurs. Earthquake so fierce the mountains settle and the islands sink!? Massive meteor shower that blocks out a third of the sun's light and the stars? A third of the sea's life obliterated by a poisonous meteor that begins a chain reaction of death on the earth...

...Revelation does NOT parallel small, localized historic events. Revelation describes these as global and yet to come. Also, the silliness of Christians arming themselves and going after the Antichrist or whatever...the bible says not to do that in those days, and if you take up arms, you will die by them, in those days. War is one thing, defending your family is one thing, taking up arms to try to kill the Antichrist is like Peter taking his sword and cutting off Malchus' ear. "Get behind me Satan." Why? You are going against God's own plan. This is what Peter did in the garden and why the rebuke. So the big siege plotting against and fighting Antichrist's people as with the middle books ain't gonna happen for believers during that time. It would be akin to trying to keep Jesus from dying on the cross. He could have prevented that himself at any time, were it his will. Thankfully, it was not his will or we would truly and genuinely be screwed for eternity.

I realize there are those here who put no stock in the catching away of the church and those who do. Stay or go, the events described during the time of Jacob's trouble will not be so tame.
