Law Will Install Kill Switches In All New Cars

Once again, drivers get screwed by politicians in DC…

Back in 1998, sci-fi TV series The X-Files aired an episode called “Kill Switch” about an AI gone rogue. Told when the internet was still accessed by most using dial-up modems, it was a fascinating tale of technology run amuck, a message about not handing too much of your life over to the digital world. While it might also seem like a sci-fi tale, soon enough the United States federal government could force automakers to install kill switches authorities can access and use to shut down any newer vehicle.

Watch the latest Motorious Podcast here.

To many, that might sound like a wonderful idea. After all, we’ve seen wanted criminals who have fled from police only to crash into a car with a family inside, killing innocents as they try to avoid capture. Being able to stop the pursuit early and almost instantaneously seems like a wonderful thing, a potential lifesaver any law-abiding citizen would enthusiastically embrace.

According to an article written by former U.S. Representative Bob Barr, hidden away in the recently passed infrastructure bill, the very one I warned before would negatively impact drivers across the country if it were to pass, is a measure to install vehicle kill switches into every new car, truck, and SUV sold in this country. The regulation likely won’t be enforced for five years, so maybe there’s time to do something about this.

As we’ve seen both in this country and others recently, what constitutes “law-abiding” can change drastically overnight. For example, in September a car was pulled over in New Zealand and the occupants arrested when police discovered the trunk was full of Kentucky Fried Chicken meals. They were smuggling the fast food to customers in locked-down Auckland, against quarantine measures. Yet not too long before, delivering restaurant orders to people was considered a reputable, legal activity.

It gets even better: Barr points out that the bill, which has been signed into law by President Biden, states that the kill switch, which is referred to as a safety device, must “passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired.” In other words, Big Brother will constantly be monitoring how you drive. If you do something the system has been programmed to recognize as driver impairment, your car could just shut off, which could be incredibly dangerous.

There is the possibility the kill switch program might measure your driving as impaired, then when you try to start the car up again the engine won’t fire up. That would potentially leave you stranded.

But wait, there’s more. This kill switch “safety” system would be open, or in other words there would be a backdoor. That would allow police or other government authorities to access it whenever. Would they need a warrant to do that? Likely not. Even better, hackers could access the backdoor and shut down your vehicle.

Barr points out what a tremendous violation of Americans’ privacy this is, and he’s right. In addition, the term “impaired driving” isn’t defined by the legislation, so it would be open to interpretation by regulators such as the Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Do you want government regulators helping to write algorithms which might force your car to pull over and stop because you might be a little tired instead of tipsy? There was never a debate on the House or Senate floor about this issue. Instead, this bill was passed through with many backroom deals I detailed out before here, if you care to learn more about that.

It’s time for not only car enthusiasts but also regular Americans to get loud and tell their US Representatives and Senators what they think of laws like these. Obviously, our elected officials don’t care too much about our safety or privacy, so we need to remind them what we expect now and moving forward.

Check out Barr’s article here.

Wouldn't buy a new vehicle if you gave me the money!! I like K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) Don't need nor want all those bells and whistles. Just more crap to go wrong and are WAY EXPENSIVE to fix. Just bought a 2013 F-150 4x4 PU with the tow package, skid plates, etc. from my brother for $15,000 that my brother took immaculate care of. That's what the dealer offered him for a trade in. His new replacement "rig" cost him over $90K !! with more bells and whistles that common sense. :eek:

I'm actually keeping an eye out for a much older rig that I can turn into an ultimate bug out vehicle that predates all the computer garbage they put into "modern" vehicles. Sort of a Cave Man rig that can go anywhere and that I can "shade tree mechanic" keep running forever.

May need to find a way to disable the "wireless" transmitter so it gets no "kill" signal.
A jammer might work as well. Don't need my car talking to the outside world anyway.
It may take a few years for this to start being installed in new cars anyway. It should be fine to buy a new car over the
next few years I think.

Someone somewhere will find a way to stop the political aholes cars who pass these laws. Someone will hack in and screw around. Only a matter of time, imo.

The X-Files told us about a lot of things that the gov't has/had planned for us, including the recent plandemic! Hence the reason I asked OC to buy us a new DVD player, I wanted to go back through my old hard copies of the X-Files and see what all I missed, thinking that this was some pretty good scifi/woo anti gov't smoking man entertainment.

A friend was recently watching the X-Files online, this is someone who has seen every episode at least a dozen times or more, and they noticed a deviation in the story line, pulled out the hard discs and sure enough the scenes had been edited, or rather edited out, and some woke BS added to the time line. This tidbit of information cause a whole bunch of us to drag out our hard discs and to start watching for these changes, and how those changes were made.

Someone in the DVD player thread commented that this has happened to the original Star Wars as well.

General Motors has the On Star system in place for many years and the On Star system can disable the car.
So now you cannot buy a new car or truck that does not have the infocenter on the dashboard and the manufacturer wants you to connect your cell phone to it with it they build a data base on your life, I'm sure the federal government is already buying the data and getting regular updates.
Lots of talk three years ago that the federal government was going in this direction and wants to be able to cut you off from everything if you're not inline with what they want and expect from you.

EDIT ADD: The concept that government cannot be trusted applies here and that they cannot do surveillance of you without a warrant. Most of you now see how they intend to go around the constitution.

It was part of an infrastructure bill. By 2026 requires advanced drunk and impaired driving technology to become standard on vehicles.

You can tell they're lying about it when you search it and find the number of news agencies screaming "it's not a kill switch, nothing in the legislation said law enforcement would have access..."

I know there was the “episode 4” thing, and the enhanced SFX when it was re-released.

Summary

March 23, 2016: A machine learning chatbot is released to the public via Twitter. It very quickly evolves and is ultimately switched off. The sequence of visual montages ends with a warning to all humans as it turns to the normal intro

Scully and Mulder are in a fully automated sushi restaurant. After they pick their selection on a screen, they both are occupied interacting with their smart devices. While Scully enjoys her sushi, Mulder receives the wrong food: a blobfish. He disturbs the chefs, which also are robots, and leaves the kitchen. He refuses to leave a tip and when trying to get his credit card back, it is stuck in the slot. When trying to use force, an alarm goes off and the restaurant starts shutting down. Scully uses a chopstick to forcefully open the door and they get outside. Mulder now realizes that his card is still in there but gives up on getting it back.

Outside the restaurant, Scully is informed by her smart device, that her "Whipz" (an automated taxicab service) is arriving. Before being able to say goodbye, the vehicle closes the door and she drives away. Mulder enters his own car and drives off. They are both constantly bothered by review requests.

Scully arrives at her home and immediately tries to call Mulder, but their phones refuse a connection. After entering her home, the home alarm system refuses Scully's code and is activated. She has to call in the false alarm and is billed $250 for it. When going to bed, Scully is shocked when a message, suggesting to buy more hair styling cream, arrives seconds after she throws her empty tube in the trash bin. When dismissing the message, she accidentally drops a glass container to the ground, which shatters. The cleanup is disturbed by the doorbell and Scully discovers a floor cleaning robot, which was delivered by a drone, in front of her door. The "ZUEMZ 9000" states, it's "here to help" and Scully, assuming it is a gift from Mulder, puts it on the floor and turns it on. Eventually, Scully gets annoyed with the robot and puts it back in the packaging. Her attempts to reach customer support of the ZUEMZ 9000 in order to return it, fail miserably. All her appliances begin to malfunction and the fireplace goes out, but gas is still flowing out. She tries to light a candle, but the match breaks and falls to the ground unlit.

Meanwhile, Mulder is tricked by his GPS to drive back to the restaurant, which is still upset and has his credit card. He instead grabs a map and navigates by himself. At home, he calls his bank to report the "stolen" credit card. Mulder checks outside the house and sees a mid-sized drone, flying in front of him. At first, he is dismissing it as a child's toy, but after more annoying attempts to spy on him, he grabs a baseball bat and destroys the drone in front of his door. Three bigger drones appear and collect the remains. Still trying to get into contact with his bank (the website refuses his login credentials), he is bothered again by the restaurant, still trying to get a tip out of him. Mulder suddenly discovers that his house has gotten populated by mini-drones and escapes by driving away in his car.

He drives to Scully's home, where Scully just started to smell the gas, leaking from the fireplace. The ZUEMZ 9000 is just about to light the match on the ground by simply rolling over it, when Scully escapes the house by smashing the glass door with a poker. The explosion throws them both in the grass and they run to Mulder's car. Both their phones still refuse cooperation, like calling 911. They try to get to the office, being chased by the drones again. When they can't shake off the drones, they ditch all their traceable electronics and run into a warehouse. Inside the warehouse, the chase is taken over by quadrupedal robots. After being shot at and facing a heavy and agile industrial robot, Mulder eventually tips the restaurant 10%, and the machines retreat and everything goes back to "normal".

In the last sequence of the episode, Mulder and Scully are having lunch together in a humanoid-driven diner, paying with paper money and still focusing on their smart devices. Until Scully decides to put her phone aside and gently touches Mulder's hand. To which he reacts by turning his phones screen down. They both sit contemplating and holding hands.

Obviously, I try my best to only post factual info, but no one is forcing you to believe the media. If you are skeptical, you may read the law. This is the Inernet ya know...The law...

SEC. 24220. ADVANCED IMPAIRED DRIVING TECHNOLOGY.

(a) FINDINGS.—Congress finds that—

(1) alcohol-impaired driving fatalities represent approxi-mately 1 ⁄3 of all highway fatalities in the United States each year;

(2) in 2019, there were 10,142 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in the United States involving drivers with a blood alcohol concentration level of .08 or higher, and 68 percent of the crashes that resulted in those fatalities involved a driver with a blood alcohol concentration level of .15 or higher;

(3) the estimated economic cost for alcohol-impaired driving in 2010 was $44,000,000,000;

(4) according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology can prevent more than 9,400 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities
annually; and

(5) to ensure the prevention of alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology must be standard equipment in all new passenger
motor vehicles.

(b) DEFINITIONS.—In this section:

(1) ADVANCED DRUNK AND IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION TECHNOLOGY.—The term ‘‘advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology’’ means a system that—

(A) can—

(i) passively monitor the performance of a driver of a motor vehicle to accurately identify whether that driver may be impaired; and

(ii) prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if an impairment is detected;

(B) can—

(i) passively and accurately detect whether the blood alcohol concentration of a driver of a motor
vehicle is equal to or greater than the blood alcohol concentration described in section 163(a) of title 23, United States Code; and

(ii) prevent or limit motor vehicle operation if a
blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit is
detected; or

(C) is a combination of systems described in subpara- graphs (A) and (B).

(2) NEW.—The term ‘‘new’’, with respect to a passenger motor vehicle, means that the passenger motor vehicle—

(A) is a new vehicle (as defined in section 37.3 of title 49, Code of Federal Regulations (or a successor regula- tion)); and

(B) has not been purchased for purposes other than resale.

(3) PASSENGER MOTOR VEHICLE.—The term ‘‘passenger motor vehicle’’ has the meaning given the term in section 32101 of title 49, United States Code.

(4) SECRETARY.—The term ‘‘Secretary’’ means the Secretary of Transportation, acting through the Administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

(c) ADVANCED DRUNK AND IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION TECHNOLOGY SAFETY STANDARD.—Subject to subsection (e) and not later than 3 years after the date of enactment of this Act, the
Secretary shall issue a final rule prescribing a Federal motor vehicle safety standard under section 30111 of title 49, United States Code, that requires passenger motor vehicles manufactured after
the effective date of that standard to be equipped with advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology.

(d) REQUIREMENT.—To allow sufficient time for manufacturer compliance, the compliance date of the rule issued under subsection

(c) shall be not earlier than 2 years and not more than 3 years after the date on which that rule is issued.

(e) TIMING.—If the Secretary determines that the Federal motor vehicle safety standard required under subsection (c) cannot meet the requirements and considerations described in subsections (a)
and (b) of section 30111 of title 49, United States Code, by the applicable date, the Secretary—

(1) may extend the time period to such date as the Sec- retary determines to be necessary, but not later than the date that is 3 years after the date described in subsection (c);

(2) shall, not later than the date described in subsection

(c) and not less frequently than annually thereafter until the date on which the rule under that subsection is issued, submit to the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation
of the Senate and the Committee on Energy and Commerce of the House of Representatives a report describing, as of the date of submission of the report—

(A) the reasons for not prescribing a Federal motor vehicle safety standard under section 30111 of title 49, United States Code, that requires advanced drunk and
impaired driving prevention technology in all new pas- senger motor vehicles;

(B) the deployment of advanced drunk and impaired driving prevention technology in vehicles;

While we’re at it, I seem to recall one of the “Alien” movies had a scene where a remote machine gun was placed in a tunnel or passageway. When triggered, its counter went from 1000 to zero. I cannot find that scene, and I just watched them all. Could not be in original, they had no such weapons. Aliens sequel seems likely, marines would have such weapons, but I never saw it. 3, the prison planet had no weapons. Resurrection wasn’t it. Covenant wasn’t it. WTF?
Also, believe Phantasm was recut and removed a scene of the Ball attacking the mortuary worker.
Bummer.

As it turns out, I have the special edition DVD, had never watched it, just the normal. It has Newt’s family in it. I think early showings had the guns, but they removed them after special edition came out.
Getting confused.

Can't get bricked if that crap is ripped out.

This tech and its sensors would prolly be computerized. Rip out your computer or destroy a set of required sensors -> brick your own car.

But, not to worry... 80% of the things discussed in the OP are only in the author's imagination - not the legislation.

If kill switches aren't already in current vehicles; then the wiring and code is already there, ready to activate.
We can all thank CANBUS technology and the OBD2 standards for helping make this happen.

The legislation (or "Law" as you call it) does not forget anything. It neither mentions nor describes anything resembling a kill switch. The OP is 80% a lie. Why are we still discussing it?

Meh. No kill switches on my '68 Ford pickup or my old Harleys. Any "kill switch" blasters would probably melt the tires off before they shut down the old points/condenser ignitions!
