Since most members here never visit the sub forums y'all need to go read pages three and four of this thread!

According to international news Comms were down yesterday in India, China, and eastern Russia from a previous CME. Four CME's are incoming and will hit tomorrow around 3pm CST.

I have been following and reading Ben's reports for the past year. Today was the very first time I have ever heard him say he is very concerned about the grid collapsing. He said he was going to get more supplies this morning and he has never said that before. If by next week we are still up and nothing much has happened I would say we missed the bullet by a tiny distance. Be prepared for the CMEs to hit earth this weekend.

It's. not the size of the CME so much, that he's worried about I think, but the fact that there are four of them are coming back to back. It's sorta like having an EF1 tornado circling back on the same spot multiple times.

This is the second day our power has been out. Yesterday it was out for 2 hours. Today we're into the first hour of the outage. Yesterday we had heavy downpours and wind. Today is sunny skies. Our power lines in this rural subdivision are buried so I imagine it's coming somewhere else down the line.

Probably gonna see lots of areas without power tomorrow, most of which will be random in nature.

Well, thanks for that; I did have some plans this weekend and wasn't sure if I needed to cancel them to avoid having to walk home unexpectedly.

How close are you to any fault lines? I know the Niagra Escarpment goes to the south of where you are at and meets up with the Mid Continental Rift, and of course there's Chicken Bone Lake in MN. And then there's all of those quakes that have been popping off in west Texas, and also New Jersey.

Not very, I think. I'm in SW lower MI; the Albion Scipio Trend is the closest to me, but that's still a couple counties away.

Just for reference, I have been in continuous contact with folks in India, and no one has reported any issues with comms. Maybe this is just problems with a handful of satellite comms, but nothing big enough to impact the public.

Thanks, I was only reporting what I had heard on the news yesterday, I think it was France 24 or something like that. They didn't make a big deal out of it just mentioned it in passing.

I think this needs to be on the main for a few days until these flares are gone, as they are unusual and are starting to become major news items. By the way, I just checked, and the link goes to the start of the entire thread. You want to look at a few stories on the last few pages.

So far, everything seems OK (for now), but this needs watching. On the good side, I have seen predictions of possible spectacular auroras, which we might even see here in Ireland if the clouds clear.

I am very much hoping it stays that way. A few years ago, one flare took out much of the Canadian North-East Power grid, and most people here know that an enormous one in 1859 took down the new telegraph system in the USA and even set some of the wires on fire.

Humans don't know how often these flares tend to happen because, before modern technology (aka the telegraph, at least), people didn't notice them. They might notice sun spots and see effects like the Northern and Southern Lights. Early telescopes might catch flares. However, it wasn't enough to start seeing a pattern of destructive solar stoves that could affect Earth because people didn't realize that happened.

The Sun Spot that caused the Carrington Event was so large one could see it with the naked eye!

I haven't heard the naked eye, but it is likely; we know the Chinese were aware of sunspots, and as far as we know, they didn't have telescopes (though I suspect they may have had some magnifying glass - the jury is still out on that one).

I do know the Carrington Event flare was spotted by an astronomer named Carrington (I think he was Dr. Carrington, but I'm not sure). He was alarmed because he realized the fare was heading for Earth and tried to warn his colleagues using the day's technology. I don't recall if he managed it before the lines went down. I'm sure it is all up in Wiki somewhere but I don't have time to search right now.

I read the naked eye account somewhere a few years back when we were concerned about another Carrington Event. There's also a painting of it somewhere by some famous artist.

Oh, I'm sure you are correct. As I said, the Chinese were aware of sunspots, even though most were seriously counted in the West in the 1600s. I knew Dr. Carrington had caught the flare on a telescope, but that doesn't mean it wasn't seen by others, either. I am pretty sure there are both Native American and other "Prehistoric" pictographs around the world that look like either solar flares or super-novas (or something else).

According to the OP, one CME hit a couple of days ago and took out comms in India and several other eastern Asia nations.

Yeah I heard about it on the int'l news, France 24 on PBS World IIRC. It was just a quick blurb but it sure caught my attention. The int'l news stations, especially Japanese news, are more likely to mention solar flares, etc., than the news in the US where everything is the direct result of man made global change.
