Food Health Benefits of Cabbage

I'm not a fan, but since it is so good for me, I'm going to experiment with it more this summer, maybe in a salad with shredded carrots and raisins. It's sure in the budget, and I get a lot of heads of cabbage for free at harvest.

Stir fry it in bacon grease with onion and green peppers. Salt/pepper and sugar to taste. Can also add polish type sausages, brown the pieces and then add. Cook until cabbage is tanslucent.

Serve with real Texas cornbread: equal amounts of flour to cornmeal and 1 T sugar, don't forget the buttermilk and cook in bacon grease.

We like cabbage fixed several different ways. Coleslaw, kraut, fried in bacon grease with onions and bell peppers, and boiled down low in bacon grease just until fork tender.

We eat a lot of cabbage around here, mostly in the form of slaw. I like to make it with half purple and half green cabbage with lots of grated carrots, a little mayo, garlic salt and a few spoonfuls of sugar. We also like it fried in bacon grease if it is available and seasoned only with salt. If you cook it down long enough, the natural sugars will caramelize and it is a thing of beauty.

Slaw is one of my favorite go to sides. I've made it so many times, I can have it done in just a few minutes. We never really liked it left over that much until I started adding the purple cabbage. It seems to somehow maintain the crisp, just made taste even if it's as little as 1/4 of the mixture. I like to keep it to go with whatever quick thing I grab for lunch. Just a few spoonfuls makes a huge difference in taste and I've heard that eating just a little raw cabbage every day is really good for your stomach.

Lastly, we love canned slaw...so, so good. It's not a creamy slaw but the taste is good with about anything. As a rule, DH and I don't like anything overly tart or overly sweet and this isn't.

Try different kinds of cabbage also. Napa is $$ here so I rarely get it but savoy is a little better. I shred it up and eat like salad. Throw some red cabbage in for color. Stew it. It's so good!
Yes!!!
Napa cabbage is so much more “gentle” than regular cabbage
It’s pricier around here, hard to find most of the time too

Nappa cabbage can go as high as $6 here. In season, I can sometimes get regular cabbage for $0.60 a head.

brown one pound of ground beef with some diced onion, add shredded cabbage with garlic powder, salt pepper, smoked paprika, cayenne, dill, and a small amount of cumin, add a small amount of bone broth (beef or chicken), cook until the cabbage is to your preferred doneness, eat, smile and have a good day

My other favorites are cabbage sliced thin, long sliced onion and garlic drizzled with olive oil and roasted on a cookie sheet. You can toss in a few flakes of red pepper to heat it up.

Or cabbage soup in the crock pot with a chicken broth base. I have a dozen variations of this recipe.

Or simply sauted with onions and served with a dollop sour cream.

I like to make Keto taco slaw using cabbage. I found the recipe in the Craveable Keto cookbook. It's pretty simple.

In a large skillet: brown a pound of ground beef, add an envelope of taco seasoning mix while browning. I make my own taco seasoning blend, so I add 2T. of taco seasoning at this point and more in the next step. When beef is no longer pink, add a can of regular Rotel tomatoes with green chilies and 2T more taco seasoning if using your own seasoning mix. Add one package of 14oz coleslaw mix or one medium head of cabbage, shredded. Cook until cabbage is tender, it cooks way down in volume, 7 - 10 minutes. Add 1/2 cup sliced black olives, this is the small 4oz can, and heat through.

DH likes to eat this in tortillas but if I am staying Keto, I just eat it on my plate with toppings like sour cream and shredded cheese. Avocado slices would be good too. It's tasty.
