FOOD First Turkey

Opening day was last Saturday in KY, I went by myself, gobblers all around me, this fella flew down at 6:20 and I nailed him. 10" beard, weighted 21.13lbs. Some went to freezer and we ate some. My very first turkey. A lot more intense than deer hunting.

Yes, we have them here in northern Minnesota. Those dang turkeys have been really active lately, flying from one side of the road to another. Scaring the bejeesus out of me when they pop out and fly across! I don't hunt them, but they've gotten so prolific that I wouldn't mind if someone took out a few to make their numbers fewer! They think they own the roads, the doggone things! LOL!!

Nice turkey you have there, ag! Come on up here and take a few more!

I got one too. Dropped it with a bolt .22 at 80 yds out the back door early in the morning. One of the three took off into the wood line after that, but one stayed behind and kept picking up the shot bird's head with it's beak until I was 15 feet away. I bleed him out right away, skinned him and cut the meat off the bone and made sausage. He had a 9" beard.
I raise turkey so the wild ones come into the backyard to investigate up close.

I used a 16 gauge. Going to try this fall with my bow.

If you think gun hunting turkeys is intense wait until you try it with your bow. I tried for years, even had one fly off with an arrow in what looked to me like the sweet spot. Finally gave up, I'll stick to the 12 gauge for birds and stick to the bow for deer.

Saw two dead on the highways yesterday. Thought about my Dad and Uncle. Uncle bagged a record breaker in the '80s. Both liked to hunt with muskets.

Aound here you want to go turkey hunting and later you find out who the turkey is.
I had taken a few in upper N.Y. state and did it with a .410 using 3" shell loaded with N0#6 birdshot.
This was back in the later 1970s and early 1980s this was way before they started making the fancy .410 turkey shells they charge an arm and a leg for today.
