#BREAKING: A drunk driver plows through a building as it was hosting a child's birthday party, resulting in fatalities and serious, life-threatening injuries

#MonroeCounty | #Michigan

Multiple law enforcement and emergency personnel, along with medical helicopters, are currently on the scene following a mass casualty incident that occurred earlier this evening around 3PM.

A 66-year-old woman, identified as a drunk driver, crashed her SUV into the Swan Creek boat club building. The incident took place during a child's birthday party, resulting in serious to life-threatening injuries for numerous individuals, including both children and adults, with some children trapped under the car.

Officials have confirmed that 15 people were injured, with 9 sustaining serious to life-threatening injuries, and tragically, two children have died from the crash – an eight-year-old female and a five-year-old male. A neighbor's doorbell camera captured the SUV speeding down the road, past the parking lot, and towards the building, as well as people fleeing from and towards the scene. Police have initiated an ongoing investigation into the incident.

Death penalty for such crimes especially where children are murdered.

Texican....

You are correct…..when an informed and empowered jury are in charge and they understand the implications of common law.

Simple, unceremonious death without undue pain or hesitation.

Easily comprehensible message sent….”you kill by neglect or intent, you will be sent to Maker for further sorting out. End of discussion.”

Driver in suspected DUI crash that killed 2 children may have left Monroe County tavern earlier

BERLIN TWP. — Police investigated and a community mourned Sunday, the morning after a car crashed into a boat club building where a birthday party was being held, killing two young siblings — ages 5 and 8 — and injuring more than a dozen other people.

A 66-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was driving the vehicle that crashed and was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated causing death, a 15-year felony, and taken to the Monroe County Jail, authorities said. More criminal charges are expected, police said.

In addition, authorities said Verna’s Tavern in Newport, where the driver of the car may have been just before the crash, had been shut down and was under investigation. A sign for the eatery describes it as "Home of the ½-pound Verna Burger" and a place for "good times & great friends since 1938." The bar was back open late Sunday morning.

The Swan Boat Club — where the party was being held at 6332 Brancheau Road, about 30 minutes southwest of Detroit — posted on Facebook it would be closed Sunday, the result of the "terrible accident" with many injuries and much damage.

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough’s voice quivered as he spoke to news media.

He appeared to hold back tears as he read a statement that described the scene after the car went through a wall at about 3 p.m. Saturday. It was, he said, "extremely chaotic and with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident."

Goodnough said 15 people, including adults, were injured.

The vehicle, he said, slammed into the north wall, moving fast enough to go about 25 feet into the building until it stopped.

The Swan Boat Club in Berlin Township, where two children were killed and multiple other people were injured Saturday afternoon when a car drove through a building where a birthday party was being held, according to police.

Multiple agencies scrambled to reach the scene and try to provide aid.

During the news conference, those listening let out an audible ― and heartbreaking — gasp as the sheriff identified the dead children as brother and sister. The 5-year-old boy and his 8-year-old sister never had a chance to even get medical treatment.

First responders pronounced them dead at the scene.

The sheriff said that nine people, three of them children, were driven by ambulances and airlifted by two medical helicopters to area hospitals. As of late Saturday, they were facing serious, life-threatening injuries. Several other people, the sheriff added, were rushed away by nonemergency vehicles.

At the end of the news conference, the sheriff, in response to a reporter’s question, confirmed that the suspect may have been at Verna’s Tavern in Newport.

"We went in, we shut the business down," Goodnough added when pressed whether the tavern would be facing police scrutiny. "We are in the process of executing a search warrant for information as to the business conducted at that day."

After the crash, Goodnough said, investigators were working at the scene to process evidence, identify victims, interview witnesses and reunite family members separated in the sudden chaos of the deadly and tragic crash.

In a sad twist, the area where the tragedy unfolded has long been a place to enjoy life.

The boat club, which was started in the 1940s as a place for boating enthusiasts on Swan Creek to meet to play cars, have a beer and kickback, mostly during the hot summer months, has faced its share good and bad times over the years. It is just off Lake Erie.

The club, in its early years thrived, its website suggested.

The club history boasted of hosting "great regattas," "snow mobile races" and "famous chicken dinners," which it still offers. At one time, the club noted, its membership included Michigan’s Gov. G. Mennen (Soapy) Williams.

In the '70s, the website said its membership dropped to less than 50 members. But since then, the club — which now also offers dockage for more than 125 member boats up to 40 feet long — said its numbers have rebounded and was “sound and prosperous with a card-carrying membership of over 250!"

Names of the crash victims were not released.

After fatal Monroe County crash, police investigate, community mourns

If the woman has been an alcoholic for years (which at 66 years old it's a good bet) she might have been legally drunk but not obviously drunk. I've seen some people before that can hold their liquor pretty good and you wouldn't think they are impaired. Or she could of been blind drunk and they served her anyway.

And notice that the article said that she was taken to jail. She crashed through a wall and went 25 feet into the building killing and maiming people and she wasn't hurt at all apparently.

A bar tends to know if they have served someone 1-2 drinks or 6-8. There are always 'tells' but not always are they obvious to the common observer.

She did crash, etc. as you say but I doubt being drunk had anything to do with her lack of injury. A seat belt alone could account for that, or an airbag. Drunks do get injured, they do die. Sometimes they take others with them, sometimes they die alone. There is no standing rule despite the common 'wisdom' save that there is no common rule. There is a valid account of a man falling over a half mile onto an airport runway without a deployed chute and only breaking his ankles. And during WWI an account of pilot, having jumped out his plane rather than burn on the way down (pre-parachute days) literally fell into another plane below.

Life is strange.

When I worked as a cashier at a grocery store, I ALWAYS asked to see ID because I would lean forwards to read it, acting like my vision wasn't great. That enabled me to get a whiff if the customer.

I did this because my Brother was a functional alcoholic. He drove better drunk than I did sober. You couldn't tell he was drunk most of the time that he was drunk, which was most of the time (he died at the age of 52).

My motto was: IF I can smell it, I won't sell it.

Threat of the loss of the job, $1000 fine and jail time was what I wanted to avoid. I was a responsible cashier. There was a gal I worked with that wasn't and she got all of the above during a policing of stores selling alcohol.

The consumption of alcohol or drugs is NOT an excuse for a lesser charge since the intoxicated individual knew beforehand that they would pose an increased risk to the public. Until those directly impacted by criminal acts start administering true justice the level of crime will only increase.

judging by the photos I saw at Verna's (the bar the drunk driver visited) the driver was neither illegals nor snooty society chick- in fact, they looked just like us, if we actually were together : (

Anyone look up the booking info to make sure the name isn't "interesting"- I am sure it isn't, but facts on the ground trump nether region assumptions every time.

shots o' random patrons at the bar in question:

I'm not certain what today's policy on copying the go fund me info here is, so I'll not do so- but as you'd guess, and too many of us know from personal heartbreak, covering double funerals and ICU bills adds additional burden to an already almost unbearable weight. . .looks like they stand at 140,000 of a 200,000 $ goal..

It looks like she was a member of that boating club. from what I can see on the clubs facebook page. That opens up a whole other bunch of questions, was she attending that party and speeding to get there, (after belting down a few at verna's) was she bartending there. who knows. A place like that, usually rents their space out to other members mostly. so did the guests know her. what a mess

Have I ever mentioned that I HATE DRUNK DRIVERS. My neighbors 30-year-old son and 3-week-old grandson were killed by a drunk driver. They did not have a phone so we got the call.

The penalties for OWI or DUI are too lenient for first, second, third etc. First should be severe enough to get their attention and anything beyond that should be serious jail time. I once had a client for bankruptcy that was complaining because he had to do a few simple things after an OWI arrest -- he drove a dump truck. While we were working on the bankruptcy, he got a second OWI lost his work permit, his license and his job. He was looking to me for sympathy and instead got told you could have killed someone be glad you were arrested before than happened.

Middle of winter here in Montana, you can see the occasional person riding (trying to ride!) a bicycle in a snowstorm…usually they’ve lost their license due to DUI etc.

That should make someone think long and hard about their habits and the consequences…

BTW, I’m not without compassion, nor do I think I’m anywhere near perfect, but…

I see posts like this (and having 15 years experience as a Paramedic & Deputy in a major metro area down south), then I remember that this ‘poor slob’ freezing and sliding all over the place - still has it better than the one who’s lost a child or family member or who’ve been crippled!

I was a career medic for over 24 years when my encounter - on duty no less - occurred with regard to an 'impaired' driver. Because there was another fatal accident elsewhere in the county there was one Patrolman for a 3 vehicle/10 victim scene. 2 FDs, 1 each FD, municipal and private ambulance service, 2 helicopters, and a single Patrolman to manage traffic, bystanders and more. The offending driver who struck the car in front of us, and than changed his trajectory to come after us, was never tested. Merely charged with Driving Left of Center (he swung over from his lane so suddenly that it appeared to be a deliberate action. He struck the family of 5 first). We only know the rest because remorse caused him to admit through his attorney that "alcohol may have been involved." Deer hunters who stopped for a couple on the way home and then were in a hurry.

Doc told me I could never work EMS again, and nursing wasn't a back-up option either, he said. I began nursing after re-activating a never used license in 2003, and to EMS in "18. I need to look that doc up again. I didn't care for his prognosis.

One time in the 90's I had a fellow I pulled out of a 1-vehicle crash as a quadraplegic. As he lay there in ER pending transfer to a trauma cent he told me "I did this to myself, didn't I?" Yep. "There is no one else to blame, is there?" Nope. An amazing moment of clarity is ever there was one. Yes, he had been drinking, and the roads was clear and dry.

He eventually recovered to walk with a cane, but he had zero movement for a good time before that. I believe he only recovered as he did because we used Swedish vacuum mattresses at the time; traditional extrication methods would have resulted in a likely much worse outcome as he was face down on the floor on the passenger side with his neck bent 90 degrees down.

I will give you the best care possible, but damn little sympathy.
