I just picked up Armageddon Pharmacy, Herbal Medicine, by Jennifer Rader. ISBN: 9798322701385

What will you do when there are no pharmacies open? When you can't get your meds? Where are you going to get your meds? How will you treat common illnesses when there are no doctors and no pharmacies? I'm just getting into this book and it's something that EVERY survival library NEEDS TO HAVE!! It's not the end all to be all and there are several other good reference books that you should include but this book is a very good start with TONS of information that every survivalist needs to have.

So, is it more than a herbalist book?

I have another book by her called Bring Your Own Bandages so I know the author is both practical and creative when it come to doing with what you have.
Well, I'd say it's significantly different than most herbalist books. Like most herbal references, Armageddon Pharmacy includes the standard disclaimers--see your doctor first, this is just for informational purposes, etc.

Unlike the others, this is written with the belief that in the coming days, there will be no commercial pharmaceuticals available. We will have what we can grow or forage. So Armageddon Pharmacy includes information on:
  • the medicinal uses of garden flowers, vegetables, fruits, weeds, shrubs, trees, and other plants, as well as kitchen staples like honey, sugar, and gelatin.
  • these are plants that grow in the US and in your own yard, not something from Europe or Asia
  • which plants were used to treat diseases like scarlet fever, diphtheria, smallpox, anthrax, measles, etc.
  • which parts of the plants were used and how specifically they are prepared to treat various diseases (when that information is available. Sometimes we only know that a certain plant was used, and not exactly how it was used.)
  • the what I call "healing virtues" of love, kindness, generosity, hope, etc., that have proven medicinal benefit. No one else covers those.
Sources! I don't think anyone should take my word for anything. People need to know what the source is for the information and be able to judge that source for themselves. Some people don't trust China, some don't trust folk tradition, some want to see that folk tradition has been clinically researched, some want to see a lot of references for a particular usage. Some will need to conduct more in-depth research for conditions of particular concern to them.

I really liked Amazon's "Look Inside" feature that they have unfortunately discontinued as far as I can tell. When I bought herbal books in the past, I wanted to know beforehand whether the book covered herbs of interest to me. So I pasted in the table of contents for your information. The order changed a bit in the two months from this draft to the final publication, so please forgive that. 700 pages. The first 100 are more general information. The rest of the book covers specific herbs and other healing substances.

ETA: Most of this information is available free on my blog. In the two years that I spent just compiling the book, I'd find more research conducted on the specific herbs, and so I updated the manuscript, but not the blog, as doing so just got to be too much of a mess.

Jennifer, your work is outstanding. Thank you for popping up and continuing to inform us, for being a TB2K stalwart, and for your humility.

For a moment I'd confused your latest book with Doc Cindy's Armageddon Medicine, another really good piece of work.

Thank you!!

I so wish Dr. Koelker was still writing. I absolutely love her work and her no-nonsense approach.

For example, does it tell in detail what to use if you can't get high blood pressure meds anymore? People can overdose on medicinal weeds too. Many things are growing out there that can help you but some can kill you also. The devil is in the details.

There are numerous suggestions for herbs that have been shown effective with hypertension.

Yes, people can OD on medicinal herbs.

Contraindications are also listed.

Standard disclaimer: You should always check with your doctor before taking beginning any herbal regimen.

I recently purchased Armageddon Pharmacy, it's a substantial reference volume. It's well worth the investment. I also have Mrs. Rader's Bandages book and again it's worth it. I've accumulated a sizeable medical library over the years and medical books can be expensive, but Jennifer's books are reasonably priced. I heartily recommend her works.

YOU ARE MOST WELCOME!! It's a GREAT book!! One of the best ones I've found on this subject and that's why I put up the OP. I strongly suspect that a natural and more holistic approach to medicine is the smartest idea. Big Pharma has it's place, but GOD put everything we need right here in front of us. We just need to learn how to take advantage of these gifts. When the focus is on making money and not health there's an essential element that is lost. Money is nice, but HEALTH is nicer.

I truly appreciate your kind comments.

I have been bothered by the food storage and medical/herbal references geared toward the preparedness market that essentially offer little in the way of practical information and/or are overpriced. I truly want everyone to be able to prepare for food and medical needs as well as possible. And if it comes down to choosing between buying my book/s or putting those funds toward food and medicine, then people can choose to search the blog for free.

Sometimes it's a temptation to raise the price of my books when I see others that I think are inferior cost more--and have so many more reviews. I wonder if potential buyers think that my books might not be worthwhile because the price is lower.

Adding to my library as well.
Thank you Shadow Man for bringing to our attention and Thank you Jennifer for all your hard work compiling all the knowledge.
One ailment treated effectively with the knowledge in the book is worth the price but to have it in print and to be able to pass it on is priceless.

I, too, ordered the Pharmacy and Bandages book after I read the OP and School Marms comments. And then I went on to read everyone else's comments. So my books are on the way. But I had to laugh.... I wonder what Amazon thought when all of a sudden - BOOM! - there were a whole lot of people ordering this item within a few hours! LOL!!! We TB'ers tend to do that sometimes, eh?!?!

I have School Marm’s three other books, and they are great.

i will get this one next month. My wallet got snippity with me, and refused to give me permission to buy it this month.

I will write a review after I have a chance to read the book, but I am certain it will end up being as good as the other books.

I sure wish I had a money tree growing in my back yard! :)

Do you have a book coming up, School Marm, that will teach us how to plant, fertilize, and maintain a backyard money tree?

I wish!

Everything I've tried so far has failed to generate that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The current effort, books compiled from my blog articles, is at least in the green right now, thanks to ShadowMan starting this thread. It usually takes a bit longer to recoup the design cover and formatting costs. We got the idea that my books might sell well at gun shows, so we're giving that a try tomorrow.
