(PREP) What Is Bottom Line On Preps For Possible Bird Flu Pandemic?

I dont know, Closet Squirrel. I think its a great question.

In regional emergencies, the companies back each other up. I doubt we'd see that kind of respose. If its a hard winter, and there are power outages, they could be prolonged-I think we can assume that those that are working will be spread thinner than usual... So the response may depend on where you are and what happens in your location. Because of that uncertainty, I'd definitely consider alt heat, light and power as important preps for this or any natural or introduced biological pandemic. With a little luck, you'll be overprepared and wont need them, but if you do, having them could make a huge difference.

just my .02, would like to hear if there are other viewpoints.
Even if the regular workers refused to go , the National Guard or Army Usamrid folks in full suits would make sure the power grid stayed up. I really don't think this would be a concern.

Laurie,

Is it possible to add Equal or Splenda to that electrolyte solution recipe, to make the mixture less "icky" tasting?
If you really don't want sugar in our electrolyte solution try http://www.davincigourmet.com/

Their Splenda sweetened syrups are awesome! I use then for all sorts of things, even sweetening and flavoring oatmeal! Great in water, soda water, punches, etc.

But, remember, if you are a diabetic, ESPECIALLY an insulin dependant diabetic, you NEED sugar calories if you are vomiting or have severe diarrhea, since you have to cover that insulin.

On my website, http://www.twincougars.com/ I have numerous links to health-related products. Two, in particular, I personally use for treating numerous types of deseases and for boosting the immune system. One is the molecular enhancer [http://www.dansenhancer.com/] and the other is the Rife-Barr machine [http://www.twincougars.com/rifelinks.htm] (I don't get any commissions for promoting these two).

The Molecular Enhancer is a multiple-wave oscillator. What it does is to saturate the cells of the body with the appropriate energies on which the cells operate. This, in turn, maximizes the chemical processes of the cell, which are brought into balance through resonance, allowing proper repair and operation. When one uses the Enhancer regularly, it maintains the electrical health of the body at a cellular level. Bringing the electrical level in each cell to the same potential does this. All chemical processes in the body require energy to take place, and the Enhancer feeds the need at the molecular level.

What does it do?

Increases the body’s ability to absorb chemical compounds;
Promotes/boosts proper and efficient chemical operation within the cells;
Replaces expended energy to your body, mind, and emotions;
Increases the body’s ability to recover faster from surgeries, injuries, and illnesses;
Dramatically reduces recovery time needed to overcome infections;
Sicknesses will cycle faster through the body; Sometimes this can cause a “healing crisis”. A healing crisis is when the body is dumping toxins at high rate. Many times a healing crisis will feel like the flu. When this occurs, do not stop using the Enhancer increase your water, get plenty of rest, soak in a warm epsom salt bath, & if things are moving too fast, cut down the time on the Enhancer.
Increases circulation so you get more oxygen to your system & enables your body to remove toxins more efficiently;
Helps the body adapt to the changes in ones system (body, mind, emotions);
Promotes self-care by taking the time to stop to do something positive.

---

The Rife/Barr machine has been used to treat many illensses and conditions. I built one and have used it on myself and family members for several years. You can buy them or build them yourself, but you can only legally use one for yourself or your family. They use a gas-filled plasma tube to emit frequencies that disrupt or destroy selected organisms according to the frequency used.

Making dietary adjustments may help control diarrhea. Some foods can actually cause diarrhea – or make it worse – while others can help to relieve it. Here are some specific suggestions:

* No matter what the underlying cause of the diarrhea, the BRATT diet – consisting of Bananas, Rice (white), Apple juice or sauce, and Toast and Tea (herbal) – may help to control it.
* Foods that are high in starch – such as white rice, mashed potatoes, and white bread – are a good bet, along with oatmeal and tofu.
* Clear juices, such as apple, peach, or pear – all of which contain much needed sugar to fuel the body – are much less harsh on the gut than other types of juices that are high in acid content (e.g., orange or grapefruit juice).
* Another good tip: Eat small amounts of food five to six times throughout the day, instead of three large meals.
* Add nutmeg to foods in order to slow down the movement of material through the intestines. This works!
* Foods to avoid: Food that can make diarrhea worse include coffee and other caffeinated beverages (cola, certain soft drinks, tea, etc.), alcohol, chocolate, fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, food high in insoluble fiber such as raw vegetables, potato peels, beans, and brown rice, fat substitutes (Olean or Olestra) and highly processed foods with little nutritional value such as Twinkies, cookies, cakes, donuts, etc. Dairy products – such as milk and cheese – can also make diarrhea worse.

Increase your fluid intake: Try to drink at least three quarts of fluid per day, unless your doctor tells you not to do so. This will help to prevent dehydration and malnutrition, which may result from diarrhea. Here are some specific suggestions:

* Drink sports drinks, such as Gatorade®, which help to replace some of the electrolytes lost in diarrhea. To make a sports drink at home, add five tablespoons of sugar and one tablespoon of salt to one gallon of water. You can also flavor it with some fresh lime or lemon.
* Drink clear liquids, including clear fruit juices, ginger ale, and water.
* Drink liquids at room temperature.

Drugs that can be used to manage diarrhea: To help control diarrhea, there are several over-the-counter (OTC) remedies available, including Imodium® AD (a prescription version, loperamide, is available for those who need larger amounts of the drug), Kaopectate®, and Metamucil® (though Metamucil is commonly used as a laxative, its fiber contents can also absorb water in the colon and help control diarrhea). Some of the anti-diarrheal drugs available by prescription include Diphenoxylate (Lomotil®), pancrelipase (a pancreatic enzyme sold under many brand names), and tincture of opium. As with drugs used to control nausea and vomiting, anti-diarrhea drugs seem to work best if taken 30 to 45 minutes before taking the medication causing the diarrhea.

Consider complementary therapies: Two herbs said to be helpful in controlling diarrhea are peppermint and ginger. Drinking peppermint or ginger tea, or ginger ale, may help calm the gut and help you to regain some control over your diarrhea. Other complementary therapies for diarrhea include lactobacillus acidophilus (available in capsules and yogurt), which can help replace helpful bacteria in the gut lost during therapy with antibiotics, as well as the amino acid glutamine and the Chinese herbal blend Quiet Digestion.

VIRKON is dissolved in water for use, providing a safe working solution with a faint lemon odour.
VIRKON has proven efficacy against bacteria (including mycobacteria), viruses, spores and fungi in a variety of independent tests using different protocols.

Pathogens (disease-causing microorganisms) can be passed between people, both directly and indirectly, in a number of ways.
Traditionally in human health, efforts have concentrated on a) vaccinating to prevent the spread of disease and b) developing new treatments to the disease whilst neglecting the key first step in infection control, namely that of disinfection -without this complementary step vaccination and medication cannot be fully effective.

I am convinced that colloidal silver is effective and should be on hand in case this flu hits us. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses but there is some evidence that CS may be.

We need to find a source for attapulgite based diarrhea medicines like the old kaopectate, di-gel, and diasorb. Attapulguite is a type of clay that when ingested, will absorb the problems in your GI tract that are causing your diarrhea and dehydration in the first place. I keep a supply in my pack and in my MedKit, but I noticed that it is getting harder to find in stores due to the "NEW" types of meds on the market (that don't seem to work as well). And yes, it tastes bad, but like all medicines that do, it works well.

I also have found that if you add a double amount of MIOX once you start feeling the flu start (or have a family member get it) to the water you drink regularly, it will make it much less likely that you end up with it. Just a thought.

some ideas

chicken soup boullion.......it's been shown that any form of chicken soup REALLY IS therapeutic....who'd think

i personally shy away from antibacterial soaps.....they remover beneficial flora which leave you vulnerable to germs which are more toxic....the most important thing is to wash using soap, get a lot of foam and rinse well.....95% of all bacteria/germs is removed with good handwashing.....

you actually want some sugar in the electrolyte solutions for calories.......just not a lot........so i don't recommend sugar substitutes

if you are nauseated and have to try to hydrate yourself....get one of those medicine cups that comes with cough syrup or a shot glass....one or two shots of gatorade (either whole or diluted) every 10 minutes will rehydrate you, but you won't be consuming enough to make you sick to your stomach...

just a few thoughts..........

Everyone is so concerned about covering their mouths, but influenza is not typically an airborne virus! Most cases are not contracted through the mouth or the nose, but through the EYES.

Masks are mostly useful to other people... if you have the flu, you are less likely to be spreading it widely. Yes, you can inhale an aerosolized droplet exhaled by someone else, but it isn't too likely. The way that it is usually contracted is that such a droplet ends up on someone's hands and they rub their eyes. Or they touch a surface onto which viruses have been shed, and then touch their eyes.

Antibacterial soap isn't even needed. Just wash your hands... at least 30 seconds of vigorous rubbing with soap and then rinse them. Repeat frequently. And keep them away from your face!

On the subject of face masks one common misconception about the N95 masks is that they will filter out 95% of everything. True TO A POINT. That point being they are rated by the size which they filter, usually measured in microns or submicrons.

Example: an N95 mask filtering 1 micron will still allow 10x the number of particles through that an N95 rated at 0.1 (zero decimal one) microns will. This is a very simplistic explanation but you get the idea. You can find N95 masks intended for paint spray that will do nada for viral filtration because they are set to filter particles much larger.

What you want are medical masks rated to filter a minimum of 95% of all particles 0.2 (zero decimal two) microns or larger, and ideally you'd find the 0.1 micron filtration masks.

None of these are perfect of course because the seals themselves are imperfect but they really do reduce exposure to airborne particles significantly. A good quality mask should also have a metal nosepiece that can be adjusted to the bridge of the nose (squeeze until it fits) to ensure a better seal. The cheaper masks will leave a significant air gap over the top of the nose, allowing you to draw air downwards instead of through the filter itself.

Two brand names that come readily to mind are 3M and Tecnol. There are others of course. A couple eyars ago when SARS was all the outrage I tried restocking my supply from my usual supplier and found they had orders for every box they could lay hands on to ship to Hong Kong as like areas. It was a madhouse. The Asians are culturally more likely to routinely wear surgical and filtration masks in public than Americans. When the time comes that this actually does become pandemic you'll find yourself competing with the Asian market for these things. Something to be aware of.

Oh, and TB masks are not generally submicron filter masks. TB is a relatively large (in the microscopic world) particle as is anthrax.

I heard (on the TV??) that singing "Happy Birthday to You" takes ten seconds, so 3 rounds of the song while washing your hands will give 30 seconds.

'Course, you can also sing "Drop dead, you little bugs" also! :lol:

Flu Prevention Toolkit.
Reliance on vaccines and drugs is a flawed stategy.
Here's a good, quick compilation of BF info:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avian_influenza

worthwhile excerpt:
"...Non-pharmaceutical means of prevention:
"Social distance". By travelling less, working from home or closing schools there is less opportunity for the virus to spread.

Respiratory etiquette. Placing one's hand in front of the mouth when coughing or sneezing can somewhat limit the dispersal of droplets.

Masks. No mask can provide a perfect barrier but products that meet or exceed the NIOSH N95 standard recommended by the World Health Organization are thought to provide good protection. Other well-fitting masks can be helpful but much less effective.

Hygiene. Frequent handwashing, especially when there has been contact with other people or with potentially contaminated surfaces can be very helpful..."

One other thing to mention.
This type of influenza initiates a cytokine storm,
which is the way it kills its host.
This is basically one's immune system
being tricked into hyperdrive.
Marburg kills in a similar fashion.

I'm not sure that immune system boosters
are going to be of much help.

NOT good news! A question for our medical experts: I know a fever is the body's way of killing the virus/infection, so a fever in itself is not a bad thing. But at what point (length of time/severity) does a fever become dangerous? Thanks, Kim

Those fish-biotics will kill your intestinal flora in about 3 doses - so be prepared for that (i.e. take lots lactobacillus pills or similar combo pills). The pig-biotics that are injected are more likely to be useful as you won't throw those up.

Good idea to bump this right about now. Many people who are somewhat prepped in other areas have a real lack in preps for medical events. Get what you need now, today if possible. This flu and the possible pandemic ramifications hasn't really hit the news yet. People are not at the panic stage yet as this still seems to be a localized situation to most people. As this continues to spread there will be a tipping point of panic and then all the supplies are going to be gone in a matter of hours. Especially things like the masks.

I hate it when I put things off. I never got any masks. Can you get them locally? I'm guessing the ones they sell at Home Depot in the paint department aren't good enough.

N-95 masks should be able to be found locally at WalMart, Home Depot, etc. (Drug stores, too)

They aren't perfect... but far better than nothing (as long as you don't assume that because you're wearing one, you are completely safe!).

Best are the N-100 or P-100 (not sure what the difference is)... look at stores which sell to auto shops, for painting, etc.

Least effective, but something I'd use if desperate, would be a homemade "mask" of several layers of cotton fabric, *with drops of essential oils* on it. Eucalyptus oil is one I know, lavender oil is anti-viral, as are many other essential oils.

I've got to get to the gardens today, but I'll see if I can dig up some of my notes from when the H5N1 flu was in the news...

There are some really good thoughts and ideas here. Keep 'em coming. I'm learning a lot and I can see that I am going to have to print some of these suggestions out!

I would just like to throw my two cents in here. If you are mixing home made gatorade away from home, you might want to sterilize the water. Your system may not be used to the local bugs that are in all water. Without boiling the water, you may be making the problem worse. Or you could use bottled water if that is available.

Also, keep some good old fashion rubbing alcohol on hand. Not only can this be used to disinfect things but it can be used to help cool down sickies if their fever gets too high. Remember, it may be summer and the electicity may be out. So an alcohol bath and a hand fan may be all you have to get an extreamly high fever down.

Went looking for masks yesterday and found 2 packs of N95 at Lowes for $7.00 each. They have a valve on the front that helps with breathing. Then I went to Home Depot and found contractor packs of 20 for $20. These didn't have the valve but are much more affordable. Both places had 100 packs of vinyl and latex gloves for about $6. I didn't notice a hole in their stock, so I think the vast majority of the public doesn't know that N95 masks are the recommended ones to buy. Get yours fast.

Is there much difference (besides the price) between Pedialyte and Gatorade? We have a baby who will soon be one year old. In normal circumstances, we wouldn't give him Gatorade if the doctor said to give Pedialyte. But the cost of stockpiling large quantities of Pedialyte would be prohibitive. (I think the name brand is about $5 per quart, and the Wal-Mart generic version is about $3). Since Gatorade is probably about a dollar per quart, it would be much more realistic to keep large quantities of it on hand.

So in an emergency, would it be advisable to give Gatorade to a baby, or would other options be better.

And incidentally, if there were an epidemic going on, I would probably use anti-bacterial soap for psychological reasons (and to prevent secondary infections, I suppose). But would it do anything to prevent a viral infection? Normally, I don't like to tout the excuse of "false sense of security" (since that's often used as an excuse to do nothing), but in some ways, wouldn't it be better not to have all of the antibacterial soap and goo? If you dab a little on your hands, it does give you a good feeling that you've killed the germs. In some ways, wouldn't it be better to have a bit of paranoia about them, and wash your hands with a lot of normal soap and hot water?

When I suggested that someone might want to dilute Gatorade for a child, one of the pediatricians I work with said, "why? it's fine full strength". The one thing I would be a bit hesitant about would be giving a lot of it at a time as I believe Gatorade has a fair amount of sugar in it and might give a bit of stomach upset.

As to antibacterial soaps, the act of thorough washing is more important than anti-bacterial HOWEVER, use of hand sanitizer is better than using soap and water. Washing with soap and water, however, removes 95% of germs etc (just plain soap, not even antibacterial). But sanitizer is more useful, IMHO, for viruses.

a thing to have also is CHICKEN SOUP, any form. Studies have shown that ANY form of chicken soup, fresh, home made, boullion, broth, WHATEVER truly has medicinal effect.

go to EBAY and get the n95's they are much cheaper than at hardware stores.

look up N95 masks and scroll down. there are tons of options. same goes for gloves.

ETA: friend of mine went to her local Home Depot and they are out of N95's.

Saved, to glorify God.
MUST HAVE REAL BLACK LICORICE THAT MUST HAVE LICORICE EXTRACT AS AN INGREDIENT OR ELSE IT IS WORTHLESS AS AN ANTIVIRAL. Because of it's medicinal properties many if not most black licorice candy contains no "licorice extract" but is instead flavored with anise, medically useless.

The MEDICINE in REAL Black LICORICE IS Glycyrrhiza which KEEPS AVIAN FLU VIRUSES FROM REPLICATING, ACCORDING TO THE CDC. (http://www.cdc.gov/eid/content/15/3/pdfs/365.pdf ) It has OTHER ANTIVIRAL APPLICATIONS ALSO. It is also an anti- mucosal and anti-inflammatory. It is being explored against OTHER viruses (hepatitus) because of the way it stops viruses from replicating (HIV, HERPES, etc.)

It is MUCH more effective (absorbed) if it is GIVEN WITH
HONEY AT THE SAME TIME.
(the ingredients that make up honey are sucrose, glucose, fructose, and 5-hydroxymethyl-furaldehyde (HMF). It is the LAST ingredient in honey, (not any of the sugars) that make licorice work more powerfully when taken with honey.)

Hipporcrates used licorice as a medicine.
Licorice /honey combined remedy, cough syrups and drops are time honored medications our fathers knew long before science discovered WHY they work.

Pregnant women are at risk of premature delivery if they eat too much licorice root extract. But because of the way it works it has traditionally been used as a tea AFTER BIRTH to stimulate the delivery of the placenta,(afterbirth)

some info on wild american licorice: http://www.wrc.net/wrcnet_content/herbalresources/materiamedica/licorice.htm

REAL Black licorice IS a powerful natural medicine that AFFECTS OTHER MEDICATIONS AND HAS IT'S OWN WARNINGS.

THIS IS WILD AMERICAN LICORICE FOUND ALL OVER AMERICA THE Glycyrrhiza up to 6% is found in the roots.

Very Informative

I have learned a great deal from this thread and with the level 6 pandemic of H1N1 still going great guns, plus the avian flu is still in the orient being passed from animal to human, still being a major threat, we have to be very vigilant to what is going on, not only in our gov. but worldwide diseases that are being passed through the air. Since I have autoimmune ailments, my doctor just went ahead and called in Tamiflu for me. It's locked up in the gun safe along with a couple of dose packets we got off of the internet. Our gov. is giving countries some of our stockpile.

Thank you for all the great posts and I agree that this needs to continue to be updated. I check the cdc website and who website every Friday when they do updates, after 11:00 a.m. This swine flu is NOT going away. You won't hear that on the news....even Fox.

Thanks again!!!!!:dpaw:

Digging up this great, old thread to ask some questions. I need to fine-tune my flu supplies. There are more and more reports of secondary bacterial infections and this flu behaving like "bird flu on steroids". I have elderberry extract, resveratol, garlic, high dose vit C and D3, etc. . I'm concerned with getting something to help specifically with the bacterial infections and to help keep the lungs from drowning.

I just remembered something else. There was talk in one of the many flu threads about getting a nebulizer. I haven't done that yet and want to now. I dont' know anything about them. I went to ebay and found lots of stuff. How do I put colloidal silver in one as someone had suggested? It looks like they are designed to only accept one of those prescription viles.

If not a nebulizer, could I use some type of inhaler that I can refill with colloidal silver?
