ZoneAlarm problem

My computer crashed, and I had to ghost Windows xp back onto the system. Everything was working fine until I re-loaded ZoneAlarm that I'd paid for.

For months before this, the computer had been dialing out at random times with no warning. When I ghosted the system on, no more dialing out at random.

Then I added Zone Alarm back into the mix and there it was again, dialing out at random times. I need to stop it from dialing out but cannot find any info on this. I'm sure it's not just my system, so what do I do? What have other people done to stop the attempts to get onto the internet?

I'm REALLY tired of having to disconnect the phone line every time I want peace and quiet!

Check your ZA preferences

Be sure you uncheck the box "Share your security settings with Zone Alarm Pro"

This will cause your PC to dial out to share info with ZA.

Something better

I use to have ZoneAlarm Pro 4. But it would not provide 100% security and it also caused some problems with Win XP.

Go to WWW.sygate.com and find the FREE down load for "Home & Personal" use.

It is FREE and works much better then ZoneAlarm.

If you want to test your system's security go to WWW.grc.com and use their free test called "Sheilds Up" (scroll down).

SyGate, once set right, makes your computer invisable.

Hope this helps.

I just found a problem with Zone Alarm. Versions after 4.5 will not allow Zone Labs IM Secure to load and run. IM Secure thinks that there is already an installed version running even though there is none.

O6,

I'm using sygate too and i'm liking it better as well.

I had zone alarm free for MANY years but toward the end it kept giving me loads of pc problems with an alert message that goes hand in hand with a trojan when the pc locked up. (vsmon)

I loved zone for a long time. But things got to by passing it and there were more and more lockups so I decided to give sygate a try.

The first thing sygate shows you is what system files are trying to access the net. Just for haha's i decided not to let the kernel access the net because i'm told its vulnerable.

I can see what's accessing just as easily as the old zone. Zone never showed me everything that was trying to access..like system stuff.

Sygate does a great job of alerting me to actual portscans. there is a diferent symbol for that than for internet traffic. I don't get hundreds of hits per minute because I can hide the internet "noise" but if something important happens, sygate gives me a nice report.

I also have a lot of other options not offered by zone. I like it because I don't have to set rules, but I can decide whether or not to allow a program to access, or ask or block just like zone. It 's just as easy to use but i have some more choices. It consumes a lot less system resources too.

I'm not trying to sell sygate to ya so to speak, but I wanted to answer a question you had asked of someone else, and I didn't see a response.

Thanks for the info, and I was not challenging you. Just looking for data on firewalls, which you gave me.

If you are into setting rules with firewalls, sygate free also allows you to do that so it's definately a little more flexible for configuring than the old zone alarm was.

I just think it works a whole lot better than zone alarm did. I'm VERY satisfied. I'm using win98se and it hasn't given me a lick of trouble!

Clem, I'm glad you liked my answer. I sure tried :)
