ZOMBIE ELIMINATION SQUAD.

Hello.

Please call me William. That is not the name I was born with, but since the name means strong protector, it is the name I have chosen to go by. I am one of the founding members of the zombie elimination squad. Our job is to attract and eliminate zombies, and we have gotten pretty good at it.

Ah, but you're probably thinking that killing zombies would be easy, just walk up and stab them in the head, like you see on TV. That does not work. The zombies are already the walking dead, so anything that you think would kill a person will not do anything to them. They do not starve to death, they do not bleed to death, they do not freeze or sweat, and they do not dehydrate from thirst. The only way to stop a zombie is to totally destroy the body. Even dismembering them is not enough to kill them, only the total destruction of the body, and that is not easy.

Now you're probably wondering how did this zombie apocalypse get started? Well I'm sorry to say it was done on purpose. Of course at the time that it started they didn't realize the full ramifications of what would happen, or at least that is what people like to think. Considering that it was the US government trying to use nanites to reanimate dead bodies in order to create super soldiers that would never be hungry, never be afraid, and would never succumb to any kind of torture, they probably just did not care what might happen, or if any innocent people got hurt.

There are many who think we should not actively be trying to kill them, and only kill the ones that are a danger to us, you know the "live and let live" idea. The problem with this idea, actually there are two problems, is that if you allow the zombie to continue there is a good possibility that it is going to hurt someone in the future, and zombies are not alive and they are not willing to "live and let live". All they care about is eating, anything, or anyone, it doesn't matter to them. if it is meat, they will try to eat it, and that is actually the key to our defeating them.

You see, they are attracted to the smell of cooking meat, so we use that to draw them into a trap where we capture them, up to 300 at a time per trailer, then take then to our base to be destroyed.

It took some time to get all this working, but now it is. We had to custom build the traps to catch as many zombies as we could, and that was not easy, but we finally did it. Built a box frame as wide as a RV-camper. The floor was solid, with metal bars on the roof and sides, and the back of it lowered to a ramp for the zombies to come up into it. The ramp could be lowered and raised by remote so we did not even have to be there to close it, and risk getting hurt, or caught.

Your probably wondering how we got them into the trap, that was the easy part. We raise rats at our headquarters, and when we are out on patrol we have several of the rats with us. When we get to place with a lot of zombies we kill the rats and start to BBQ them on a grill in the front of the trap-trailers, there was a small cage area no zombies could get to, and that was our BBQ area. The smell of cooking meat drew them out by the hundreds, so we caught as many as we could hold to take them back to base and destroy them.

Now, to destroy them, we had to get creative, because the nanites repair any damage, so we have to destroy faster then they can repair. At first we just burned them, but we learned this is not a good way. If even just 1 nanite remains working, it will repair all the damaged nanites it finds, and they will repair more, till all the nanites are fixed, then they will use any bits of flesh or bone that did not totally burned and using the ash for raw materials, they will start to multiply the cells, rebuilding the zombies, almost like cloning them. This is part of what makes them so dangerous. If you cut off a arm, or even just a finger, the body will grow a new one, and arm or finger will grow a enter new body as the nanites can find the material. Blow one up, and in a few months you will have a 1,000 more zombies that all look alike. You get the idea.

The only way to stop them is to either remove all the nanites, or deactivate all of them, and we have no idea how to deactivate them, other then magnetic pulses, so that is what we do. When we get them back to our base, we connect the entire trailer to a lift that takes it 5 stories up, and then the floor opens and all the zombies fall into a 'holding area'. Since the magnetic pulses will only work if the nanites are active, we have to do enough damage to get them active, so we do. I will not describe how, let's just say no one can watch and not get sick, so no one is aloud in that area when it is active.

Once the damage is done, hundreds of magnetic coils in the walls power up and create the magnetic pulses. they travel back and forth the length several times in a few seconds. Then a series of super strong natural magnets, super cooled my liquid nitrogen, very quickly lowers till it is just above 'the mess'. We assume this pulls/rips all the nanites out, every single one. If any remain, they do not survive the next step.

We burn what is left, what we call 'the mess'. Since propane and gas ran out out a long time ago, we use hydrogen. It is easy to get since there is a river less them a mile away, and solar panels power the hydrogen cells so as long as we have sun light, we can make, and store the hydrogen till we need it. We use it run our generators to supply power to the systems that need more power then the panels and inverters can do, but that still leaves enough for the flames.

They tried to claim that the nanites were not actualy reanimating the dead bodies, after all no amount of their nights would make a body moves that this is an dead six-month, but were instead restoring the life and maintaining the health of the soldiers that had just been wounded\killed. The neonates could only restored somebody within the first 10 or 15 minutes of their death. This would enable the solder to fight without fear of pain, or death, and make then better fighter. Many were concerned about what would happen to the solders after the war, but the scientist claimed that the solders would not be harmed in any way, and after the war, the nanites could be deactivated and removed if the person wanted.

The main selling point for was the claim that the nanites could also restore the enemy solders, but switch their loyalty so they would then fight with our side. To some, this seems suspicious. If the nanites just restored the life and maintain the health of the soldiers as the manufacturers were claiming, then how could they cause an enemy soldier to switch loyalties? This would require some form of mind control, or instantaneous brainwashing, both of which would take away the soldiers free will. Unfortunately those that tried to point this out were overruled by the everyone else, and was shouted down.

We also have found a few ways to conserve our hydrogen fuel. If someone only needs to go a mile, or less from the base, they walk, and if they need to go out to the farms for something, they take a solar powered cart. They are crude, uncomfortable, and slow, but they will get out to the farm area and back in 1 day.

Third draft.....
Major change in the origins......

ZOMBIE ELIMINATION SQUAD.

Hello.

Please call me William. That is not the name I was born with, but since the name means strong protector, it is the name I have chosen to go by. I am one of the founding members of the zombie elimination squad in our community. Our job is to attract and eliminate zombies that threaten our town and the surrounding area, and we have gotten pretty good at it.

Now, when I say zombies I do not mean the walking dead. I'm sorry to say these creatures are worse then dead, these poor creatures are as alive as you and me, but their individuality, their free will, their creativity, their very sense of self-awareness, is gone. When we first started, we captured quite a few of them, and tried to find a way to help them, possibly to restore them back to normal, but we quickly realized there is no way to do this The heart is beating, digestion is working, they still eat, they still get hungry, in fact they are never not hungry, no matter how much they eat. There is no sign of a human mind, or any level of intelligence. They are nothing more then mindless shells of their former selves, whose only desire is for food and water. They do not even desire to breed, one of the most fundamental and most powerful of all instincts for any living thing, and these creatures do not have it.

Now you're probably wondering how did this zombie apocalypse get started? Well I'm sorry to say it was done on purpose. Of course at the time that it started they didn't realize the full ramifications of what would happen, or at least that is what people like to think. There are some really evil people out there, so it is possible this was done as some twisted form of population control. It started out because of a technological breakthrough in nanotech. Someone make what could only be described as organic nanites that could build more nanites from the calcium, iron, and copper, and a few other chemicals, in a living body.

It did not take long before they started to be used to help people in emergency medical situations. If a person was severely injured in a car accident, the first responders could inject them with emergency medical nanites on site. The nanites would then travel throughout the body closing off everywhere the person was bleeding, so that the person did not bleed out before they could be got to the hospital. If a limb had been severed, the nanites would act like stitches holding it on and in place so that the body's natural healing could restore it. At first it seemed to be a medical miracle, and everyone was happy about it, including me. Thankfully this was only done in the worse cases. If it had been used in every accident, the number of zombies would have been much more the it is.

The more severe and injury was, the more nanites they would get, the hungrier a person would be after getting help. Most assumed this was because the body used a lot of proteins and energy to repair and the nanites used stuff from the body to make more, so the body needed to replace that. Within a few months people began to realize that the hunger never stopped, and they were not just craving foods high in copper and iron, they were starving for anything. No matter how much they ate, they were always hungry and they never gained any weight. It was as if they all had tapeworms. The scientists could not explain this, and began to investigate what the nanites were doing in the bodies. They realized that the nanites were using the biomass of the food to replicate themselves, the bodies were getting very little. This was because of a mistake in the programming. Originally the nanites were only supposed to take mass from the large intestines, that which the body does not need and is preparing to reject.

When the manufacturers learned of this they tried to remove all of the nanites from the people's bodies. They thought that this would restore the people back to normal, but they thought wrong. Instead of the nanites leaving the people's bodies, the attempt to extract of them caused their data to corrupt even more. From that point forward every new nanite would receive corrupted data, and the corruption would only get worse each time. In less than six months the corruption reached the point where it was affecting the bodies. The bodies had become cannibalistic as the nanites were absorbing more and more biomass to make more and more corrupted nanites. At this point there was no way to give the person enough food. Once the body reached the point where it could no longer sustained, the person should have died, but they did not. The nanites maintained Some think that the nanites kept copying till there was 1 in every cell of the body, and more in the blood stream seeking new cells.

It was at about in this time when the public started to turn on the nanites infected people. That the public thought that they would simply round up all of the nanites infected and quarantine them. Unfortunately there were a few who still had enough intelligence to resist. They were severely injured in the process of detaining them and the injuries caused the nanites to go into 'overdrive'. That was when the people totally became zombies. The nanites stripped away all forms of intelligence, all originality, all creativity, all individuality, and followed a corrupted version of their most basic programming, to maintain the body at any cost.

They left the parts of the brains that controled the autonomic systems, like the heart and lungs, but destroyed the parts that held memory, imagination, and other parts that were 'non-esention to maintain the body functions' that was when the people became fully zombified and became nothing more then walking hunger. The one good part was that the nanites can not leave the body the way a virus could, in the breath. They stay in the blood and cells, so the only way another person can become 'infected' was if they came in contact with the blood or torn flesh of one of the zombies. As far as we know, just touching one of them would not do it, but we still do not take any chances. Remember, they are walking hunger, and to them, we are just walking meat. Most of them look like skin stretched tight over bones, but we have heard of them turning on each other, if they find one that looks like it still has meat on it.

Although their only desire seems to be for food and water, even if they are denied food they do not starve to death, and if they are denied water they do not succumb to dehydration. If they are cut they do not bleed to death, in fact the cuts heals within a matter of seconds. Because of this they almost indestructible. Eventually we learned that the only way to stop a zombie is to totally destroy the body. Even dismembering them is not enough to kill them, only the total destruction of the body, and that is not easy.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are many who think we should not actively be trying to kill them, and only kill the ones that are a danger to us, you know the "live and let live" idea. The problem with this idea is they are all a danger to us, and anyone else. All they care about is eating, anything, or anyone, it doesn't matter to them. if it is meat, they will try to eat it, and that is actually the key to our defeating them. You see, while they will try to eat anything with biomass, including grass and trees, they are attracted to the smell the smell of meat, especially cooked meat, so we use that to draw them into a trap where we capture them.

When we started, we were catching up to 300 per trip, that was as many as our trailer could hold. After a couple of months, the numbers started to fall, and now there are days when we do not find any, but when someone does see one, we go to work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We raise rats at our headquarters. They do not take much space, breed fast, and can live on the garbage we throw away. When we are out on patrol we have several of the rats with us. When we get to place with zombies we kill the rats and start to BBQ them on a grill in the front of the trap-trailers. There is a small room there, that once the door is locked, the room is sealed can only be opened from the inside.

As the rats cook the smell is blown into a tube that goes along the roof, and the smell comes out at the top of the ramp. The zombies go into the trap looking for the meat, and are pushed in by more looking to get to the meat. The only thing preventing them from walking back out is more zombies behind them, pushing them. Because of this, a few have escaped, but they never learn and fall for it again later. If there are only a few, then we close the trap as soon as they are in. We do let them have the rats. We are not going to eat them, and if we throw them out, they could lay there till they rot and stink. There are not many cats, or any animals, left around here.

If you cut off a arm, or even just a finger, and it is not reattached, the body will grow a new one, and the arm, or finger, will grow a enter new body as the nanites can find the biomass to use. Blow one up, and in a few months you will have a 1,000 more zombies that all look alike. You get the idea.
