Baking Yeast prices are soaring

Just got on Amazon to order more yeast (just in case, ya know). Talk about sticker shock!

There is none available in any of the local stores, and on Amazon, the cheapest was the 2lb compressed at $22. When I ordered the 1lb earlier this year it was about $7. Someone was trying to sell the 4 oz jars for $25.

OMG is all I can say. This should keep me in plenty for the next 4 years or so. If ya need it, get it now!

At this point the damage is done. Like ammo, it may be better to wait until later when hopefully the prices go down. Since the time has come to say "if you don't have, learn to do without".

Neither here nor there.
Fareway store had yeast back in stock this week, same price as before. Sounds like someone is price gouging on Amazon and tou should report them.

I manage to find some at Sam’s club a couple of weeks ago. They didn’t have much and it was early but the price was under $5.00 for 1 of the 2 lb packs.

Time to make sourdough starter also known as liquid yeast if you don't let it go sour and feed it every day and/or add some sugar or honey every time you feed it.

The taste will be a bit "fuller" than modern yeast bread but it is the secret of a lot of professional bakers and places like Polish and other traditional bakeries.

It is easier to make starting with commercial yeast but you don't have to, it just takes longer and may take a couple of extra tries before getting "yeastie beasties" that you really like the taste of.

Prepared Pantry -- A friend of mine likes Prepared Pantry. I have not purchased from them. Their prices seem high to me and the shipping charges would just about double the cost of a small order. Bur if you cannot find yeast anywhere else, this might work.

The jars are coming back at the Super Walmarts. I grabbed two the last time I was there. Those should last through until January, including the T-Day and Christmas baking seasons. I don't have room in the freezer for a brick of yeast right now: priority goes to meat.

Saw some at Kroger yesterday, but it's only the single packages. Other thing I had to hunt for and finally found at Kroger was the big box of baking soda.

Right now I have enough yeast for the next 5 or 6 years. But yes, there is a lot of price gouging going on.

My brick of yeast is on the shelf, once I open it i"ll put it in a glass mason jar with a metal lid, and lasts about three years, that's if I still have any left in that amount of time.
