WEATHER Winter Storm to Impact Iowa Thursday & Friday 01/14 - 01/15

Neither here nor there.
For those of you of the praying kind we could use some prayers, the electrical system here in central Iowa is still "fragile" after the August 10th derecho. There are areas of the state that are still on "temporary" power structures and will be through next summer.

Winter Storm to Impact Iowa Thursday & Friday

Iowa snowfall probability

A long duration winter storm will impact the upper Midwest Thursday into Friday. An area of light rain and snow will move across the state early Thursday morning and will continue east through the early afternoon hours. This will bring the possibility of light snowfall accumulations.
As the system continues to deepen, snow will continue to wrap around the system from late Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon. The main concern with this system will be the high winds. While snowfall totals could range from 4 to 6 inches in northern Iowa, wind gusts of 30 to 40-mph will significantly reduce the visibility.

Due to some uncertainty between the different models, impacts will still continue to be pinpointed down throughout the day Wednesday and even into Thursday morning. Winter weather advisories are warnings are expected to be issued, but have not been issued yet due to the uncertainties that still exist. For those who have travel plans for Thursday and Friday across the state of Iowa, and points north, continue to keep a close eye on the latest forecast.

Yep, we are getting it starting tonight (N MN)....beginning with freezing rain I guess. They aren't predicting much wind (yet) anyway.

Ack...they just changed it - now 5-9 inches of snow and 35mph winds. Yeehaw.

yah, they changed it to a blizzard warning with 50mph winds and up to 10 in for us where we are. yeehaw indeed.

getting busy and the kids will help when they get up

The wind picked up last night. The flapping of the Trump flag on the front porch woke me up.

Prayers for the folks to the south whose electric lines are fragile.

10:06 am Central -- Packy and anyone else around Central Iowa -- the low keeps dropping south. They have just increased our snow totals. Keep an eye on this storm!

**I have two more stores to visit and then I'm in for the next few days.

Wind is really picking up here. There has been extremely light snow/rain most of the morning with no accumulation. Looks like I'm in the 6" area. Hibernation from the storm won't feel any different than staying home since March. The derecho was south of us so no particular worries about power outages and generator will kick on if it should happen.

1:36 pm CST Central Iowa -- starting to get some intermittent freezing rain -- bridges and overpasses are getting slippery. I'm home and not going out again, unless there's a major emergency.

The wind has calmed down for the moment. I know they are talking about tonight being a problem, but I think roads will become more and more slippery as the afternoon wears on.

Thank heavens I have everything I need in house, safe travels, I'm sure the stores will be slammed today.

The stores weren't bad in Ankeny until almost noon: Menards, Staples, Home Depot, Target, PetsMart, Michael's and JoAnn's (located in several long strip malls on the same street). Then I stopped at N. Ankeny HyVee for pizza and some gourmet goodies & gas. They were just getting slammed when I left.

I'm seeing an uptick in traffic leaving town, I see this amount of traffic starting around 4pm so it looks like people are leaving work early today. Gourmet goodies, tell us more!

Italian Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, Wisconsin Fontina cheese, Wisconsin white cheese curds, crackers made with palm oil, several bottles of local red and white wine, fresh linguine, several scallops and jumbo shrimps (seafood linguine with red wine on the menu tonight!).

I'm still not fond of frozen Iowa seafood but I'm craving shrimp right now.

I save the rinds from the Parm - Reggo and add those to potato soup.

Yeah, not a fan of frozen seafood either, especially since I've had the pleasure of eating scallops that were fresh caught out on the ocean and eating it right there on the boat! Most people will never know that kind of seafood deliciousness! Didn't know HyVee sold fresh linguine, will have to check that out now, thanks for the heads up.

Now. They moved the timing to start at 6 tonight. It will go until 6pm tomorrow. Still get same junk, but like walkntrot said it looks to be pushed a little further south. So, I'ma get nailed I think, and I think Iowa will too

It's near the produce section kept cool if your store has it. I'm spoiled from getting seafood off the boat in FL, but what am I going to do? The beef, chicken, and pork are to die for in IA, so that's great! I'm probably craving magnesium right now, thus the shrimp craving.

Back to weather: it's snowing off and on here, now.

I never believe their times. Around here, it's starts cooling off about 3:30 - 4:00 pm and the roads can be frozen in patches by the 5 pm commute time. Glad I'm home!

I'll have to look for it now, I love it when I can get to DM and go to the Italian grocery store there, while the pasta IS frozen, it was typically made that morning. Their raviolis are to die for, and their prices are way better than HyVee's, especially on cold cuts.

yup same here, meemur. snowing off and on

fezzik should be home from work before the big show starts. unfortunately, he will have a real mess tomorrow for the drive to and from work, but at least it is just one day now and not 2. gonna be an early morning tomorrow for me and maybe fezzik jr. we will have to get up and make sure that fezzik can get out of the driveway

Fezzik may have to call off work tomorrow if there is a blizzard warning and visibility is down to zero.

It's the Midwest. Even with our huge plows, there are still going to be a few days each winter when it's not worth risking life and vehicle to get to work. Those are also the days doctors and nurses pack a bag and stay over at the hospital.

The Weather Service just issued a blizzard warning for here in the Omaha area. 2-4 inches of snow and 60 mph winds. Sure am glad that I'm working from home. Tomorrow AM's commute sounds like it's gonna be rough.
Be safe out there my Iowa folks. Sounds like you guys are in for a real treat.

We just started getting snow about 20 minutes ago. They are saying 2 to 4 inches here - but there may be quick whiteout conditions. I'm so grateful it took its time getting here - I had to take DH up to Madison for a doctor's appt and was not looking forward to driving in freezing rain and/or snow. Stay safe everyone!
