Looks like they wasn't professionally managing the forest around town. Those type of evergreens grow old to maybe 50 years old and die from drought and beetles. The only proven way to manage them in most cases, is to clear-cut, slightly terrace then replant in sections every 25-40 years, then thin out and clear cut again. Over and over. The beetles have a hard time killing active growth. Old growth, the beetles love finishing them off, and fire is what mother nature prescribes!

In many areas it's a tree-top fire. The predominate timber in that region, and throughout the Idaho panhandle, is ponderosa pine. Those trees tend to leak sap for fun (great fuel for starting campfires). Extremely combustible. A second childhood friend of wife has been evacuated. Wow, this is a major fire.

Thanks! NASA and FirePing are the only ones that have updated in the last few hours. Usually I use WatchApp, but they're not updating. Our close friends moved to Spokane on the 17th to be near their son, and now they're all evacuated. The east end of the Old Trails fire is less than a mile from them now. Their faith is strong, but...wow.

Being that far north I assumed they was mostly lodgepole or alike pines.

Pondarosa pines do live longer all things considered, but still should be managed better near major population centers.

Interesting the tree top fire through ponderosa trees, seems it would rain sap on fire under them.
 
3 suspicious fires started in that same area in the last couple of days.
We evacuated my 85 yr old mother from the 5 Mile Prairie yesterday after the fire jumped the Spokane River. The fire was a few blocks from her home when we left. We don't know if it is still standing.
It took us several hours to get out of the city and get to my home 35 miles north of Spokane. We live in the area of the Oregon Road fire that burned 2 years ago. It stopped just 4000 feet from my property at that time and my wife and I were evacuated for 2 weeks.
After we got home last night an arsonist was caught and arrested in my neighborhood.
The winds and extremely dry conditions are the biggest problem with no rain predicted for the month of August.
 
Having a hard time getting updates this morning. My son has a home in Suncrest overlooking the lake. So far it is OK, but the fir is burning about 1 mile from his place. I can look at his security camera and he still has power. Suncrest is under mandatory evacuation from what I can see. I am supposed to fly up there on the 19th for 3 weeks. It may be an interesting trip. He works for the military and is scheduled to return home on the 13th. With his job he is not married so I don't have to worry about family.
