Why meat is so expensive right now??

Food prices at home have increased almost 11 percent since last April, more than overall inflation (8.3 percent), but the cost of meat, milk, and eggs, in particular, has soared well beyond both measures. From April 2021 to April 2022, egg prices went up 22.6 percent, chicken is up 16.4 percent, milk and beef are up almost 15 percent, and fish and seafood are up 11.9 percent.

They know most people want meat and will pay a little more for it, even if they buy less meat or less often. That's not true with many food items. The price of Lay's potato chips shot way up at our Walmart. Those $2.49 bags of chips jumped to $3.99. In about a month they were back down to $2.49 again. People just stopped buying them.

For the same reason vehicles are so expensive. Gas-powered vehicles and meat is being phased out.
We agree both are interconnected.. price of gas increased and it directly affected the price of other essential food items too.
We are trying our best to come up with the best price and lowest price available.

We are hoping to see the same kind of price slash on meat products also, but the current situation doesn't show any indication.
as per our manufacturer in the coming months, the cost of meat products will increase again.

I agree..it's not going to get a lot better for a loooong time. Not until the economy really crashes and burns. Egg prices will go down some in the next few months, There were simply too many birds taken off-line from bird flu this spring. Pork...I can still easily find pork butts and bone-in chops for less than $2.00/lb, chicken leg quarters for .79/lb and this week, looked at sale whole fryers which were $1.66/lb. Not great $$, but doable...especially if you can stretch a chicken past one meal and into two or three.

Was looking at summer sausage at the store this morning (protein snacks for the low carb life) and happened to catch that they had 12 oz. packs of Bar-S sliced bologna for $1.99. Looked online, and Walmart sells same for $1.18/pk. I didn't indulge, but they sell cheap hot dogs too because I buy either those or the cheap turkey wieners as treats or pill camouflage for the dogs.

Anyway..if you dig, you can still find ~$2.00/lb "meat". No doubt the above is mostly filler, but when you are really scraping and have next to nothing to spend on food, a couple slices of cheap bologna fried for breakfast, in scrambled eggs, or in a sandwich, or sliced hot dogs in green beans, mac and cheese, etc. makes you feel like you are eating something with some bottom to it. Some "normal" to it.

:shr: I dunno, but this was how I was taught to manage a real tight (next to starvation) food budget. Internet Depression-era Clara had nuthin' on my mom and grandma.

I know that feed costs have gone through the roof! Talking to our grower and his feed costs have practically tripled in as many years. Not to mention costs for calfs, and weened piglets, they've double in price.

We buy our beef and pork directly through a local grower. Over the last three years we've seen our average price of our local home grown meat go from $3.80/lb to $6-7/lb to our pending 1/2 cow at $8.05+/lb. That's buying directly from the grower and includes slaughtering/butchering fees.

I'm not complaining as we get better quality beef and pork than what you can buy in the supermarket, but still I don't know how much longer a "small holder" can stay in business. Even the big commercial farmers are hurting and many ranchers are selling down or selling off their herds. This does not bode well for our future food security.

money? whats that?
Makes me glad that I have a nephew who works for an electric company, (who shall remain nameless). They have a piece of property with a lot of equipment and the place is overrun with hogs. It is so bad that the company has instituted a policy that if you are an employee and you want to go onto their land and help thin out the herd, there is no size limit, no bag limit, and open season year-round. This is also the same nephew who once made a living as a butcher.

I am up for adoption, if your nephew is interested....

In my area, chicken and pork are still very reasonably priced and plentiful. Beef is another story, but even that has come down a bit in price, lately, especially, ground beef.

Off-the-wall high here for beef. $10.58/pound for ground beef 85/15

Jimmy Dean sausage went from $5 per roll to $8 while I was away this summer.

I sure would love to get a moose for the winter….or even a caribou or two.

I love Mountain House but I think they are pricing themselves out for most people. Look at chili mac on the add above - $420 for a case of 6 cans. In the nicest way - Holy F$$$ing Shit!

I am guessing you are back in Alaska?
My son is a meat cutter pretty darn close to you if you are. I will get him to let me know when/if they are having sales on meat and will PM you.

Yes, I’m home happy to say! Lovely! Mikes meats in E R? or perhaps Mat Valley? We are trimming what we have now to make pemmican with our stores. Good exercise as is all the wood cutting I’m doing (though we all know that the cottonwood is no good, lol).
