It's unclear what caused the sound around 12:15 p.m. The Onondaga County Sheriff's office says they're getting reports of people hearing and feeling the boom as far away as Oswego and Oneida.
CNY Central's Chief Meteorologist Wayne Mahar checked in with the American Meteor Society and they are getting reports of a loud boom from Ontario to Virginia and even in Michigan.
Wayne believes the "boom" could've been a meteor hitting the earth's atmosphere.
National Grid told investigators said it was not related to them or the power grid. A sheriff's office spokesperson said they are checking with the National Weather Service.
In 2019, a fireball, which is a larger, brighter meteor, caused a loud boom in Onondaga and Oswego counties.
