White woman lasted two weeks running a rock opera — booted for wearing cornrows at Burning Man

BS BULLETIN:

  • Baltimore Rock Opera Society hired Kelly Carnes as executive director effective Sept. 8.
  • Days later, a video showing the white arts executive wearing cornrows prompted complaints about “cultural appropriation.”
  • Carnes was soon out, four of the organization’s six board members are departing, and she says she is exploring the matter with a lawyer.

Apparently even rock opera has a dress code now.

The Baltimore Rock Opera Society is dealing with a remarkable leadership implosion after its newly hired executive director, Kelly Carnes, appeared at an organization event wearing cornrows she had gotten for Burning Man.

Carnes, who is white, began the executive director job Sept. 8.

BROS formally announced her appointment Sept. 14, praising her more than two decades of experience in arts leadership, nonprofit strategy, fundraising and communications.

Then came the hair.

Carnes had recently returned from Burning Man in Nevada, where she said she chose the braided hairstyle as protection against the festival’s notoriously dusty desert conditions.

She kept the braids afterward and wore them to a BROS event.

A video featuring Carnes was subsequently posted online, where members of the organization’s community raised concerns that the hairstyle amounted to cultural appropriation.

BROS removed the video.

The organization later acknowledged the controversy in a public statement specifically describing footage of its new executive director, “who is white, wearing cornrows.”

The board said it regretted removing the video without initially explaining why and promised additional action.

That action included revising its anti-discrimination policy to more explicitly address “cultural representation and dress,” implementing anti-racism leadership training and establishing a working group focused on culture, community voice and racial equity.

Carnes did not survive the controversy.

She told The Baltimore Banner that her termination notice described her as “not a good fit” rather than explicitly citing her hairstyle.

But Carnes believes the connection is obvious.

“People can have different opinions about my hairstyle,” she told the Banner. “But someone’s personal opinion about my hairstyle is one thing. Making an employment decision based on my physical appearance is another.”

She said no one raised a concern about her hair when she attended her first major BROS event in person.

Carnes also said that when the organization later held a town hall addressing the controversy, the board instructed her not to attend.

She was subsequently fired.

Carnes says she is now examining whether the circumstances raise legal questions.

“I believe the circumstances surrounding my termination raise serious questions about discrimination, governance, and whether the values BROS presents publicly are actually extended to the people it employs,” she said.

“I am exploring those issues with counsel.”

And Carnes isn’t the only person heading for the exit.

BROS informed volunteers that four of its six board members — including board chair Naomi Davidoff and founder Aran Keating — plan to leave at the end of the year.

The organization said after a lengthy board meeting that it believes BROS should consider “new organizational structures, business models, and methods of leadership.”

All of this unfolded less than three weeks after Carnes started the job.

MY QUICK TAKE

This is a rock opera company.

Rock. Opera.

One would think a group built around people dressing like fantastical characters while belting songs under stage lights might have developed a slightly higher tolerance for adventurous hair.

Instead, the new boss went to Burning Man with braids and came home to an anti-racism training initiative, a new committee, an unemployment notice and most of the board heading for the exits.

Forget the next rock opera.

I want tickets to the board meeting.

Well, believe into one hand, and squat over the other, and see which hand fills up faster.

She has discovered the Universal Loophole of business. "Not a good fit" lets you quietly dismiss anyone with zero legal consequences no matter what, unless there's an actual paper trail. And by now her employment records have probably been shredded, burned, and the ashes scattered to the wind.

Ohh.... so that is the center stage issue..... she dunn misappropriated hair style on her white ass head.

Thou shalt not misappropriate anything that is accused of misappropriation, honky.

All of this happening in a satanic event. Sodom & Gomorrah are due to come back to accuse us of misappropriating their lifestyles.

I got no dog in this fight, but I hope she sues her employer and wins. If not, then there should be legislation banning the use of ebonics and afro-slang because it causes big ass misappropriation.

And here is some big ass advice in 2 minutes-

I spoke at a U of Illinois board meeting two weeks ago. I ran out of the allotted time and pointed at my long curly grey hair and stated, "I identify as an Afro American, can't I get an extra twenty seconds"? I thought it was funny, they didn't.

I talked to the brown skinned chancellor at the end and made it clear, I couldn't not use the joke.....he kinda smiled and let it go.

My entourage and myself got scolded by a lady looking like that as my entourage was painting my entire body matte black for a show back in 1993. She was also being prepped for her performance.
What a dim and dumb bitch. I was beautiful looking, almost invisible as we performed in the moonless night outside.

We all looked at her like "Huh?", and looked back at me..thought about it for only a moment before we realized what she was bitching about and then looked back at her with the appropriate "Good gawd, moron" look, and one of us said, "What? Look at your hair then. We are not doing "black face", moron."

I even did a TV episode a couple days later in that matte blackness mode.

The next year for that show we chose to make me fluorescent orange to avoid offending weak minds.!

I looked like a giant alien CHEETO, but that year I had huge blue alien eyeball prosthetics attached to my face..LMAO.

Of course it doesn't happen in the WNBA. i know this won't probably be well received but I just don't understand spending that much time on you hair is a good thing. I know how long cornrows take but those long slender braids - I don't get it.

Well, we usually say(a southside thing) F'em if they can't take a joke.

Often shortened to Joke'em.

Right?! Why is this never talked about whenever cultural appropriation comes up? Because apparently, only people of color can have their culture appropriated. Perhaps whities should never have shared our culture in the first place; other races seem inclined to think that they're entitled to it.
Racism is NEVER against Whites.

Which, of course, is the most racist statement out there!

What a bunch of DUMB ASSES!!!

Well then....I guess if you're not white European you should be banned from wearing any kind of Western styled clothes, no shoes....bare feet only, forget straight hair, especially blond, brown, red and any color other than black. Oh forget those long nails..... Living in any kind of Western styled homes. Go back to mud, dung and straw huts. Dirt floors only. No running water or electricity. Go poop in the tall grass...oh and no toilet paper. Forget air conditioning. Education is right out the door, no schooling other than that found in tribal huts. NO CARS, no planes, or trains. No modern medicine, back to witch doctors. No phones, radios, TV's, nothing electronic........Basically if "THEY" didn't invent it IN AFRICA, "THEY" can't have it, because that's Cultural Appropriation!! Oh and "THEY" can't speak English or any other European language....only African dialects.

Someone needs to get slapped HARD up against the side of their head. :smkd:

Don’t have a dog in this one either but a couple of years ago at a place I worked a woman of color made this same complaint about one of my fellow workers. Meeting with HR lasted about 10 minutes. His Mom and the whole rest of the family were from Norway followed the old gods. And stated with historical background that Viking and other Norse people had been wearing their hair like that since before Christ. Asked her if she had any proof that blacks had worn them that long? Or if she was the one guilty of culture appropriation. He was told he could go back to work and nothing would be put in his file.

OH. Looks like the B'more art scene IS eating it's own. One of those names has been to my beach house; friend of D's. Guess the exodus will pick up steam.
