rafter... yep, country life (combined with big city conveniences like Sam's Club!) has it's advantages!
I got occasional comments (especially when we had 4 teens at home and I was building preps) from clerks at the local (small) supermarket. But I'd "educate" them about stocking a pantry (no survival/tin foil stuff, just basics) and how much money I was saving, buying- say- 12 bottles of catsup. And I had some converts- including a few high school girls who paid more attention than I'd have thought. A couple told me later "I watch what you buy and then get some... I know it's going to be a good deal!"
But you have to know your individual town. In some (usually very small, very Southern and very old), exactly what you bought and how much you paid would be related to everyone in town (especially if it was out of the ordinary in their view) in 24 hours. In ours, the only real reason people seem to pay attention is so they can know if someone is in need of help. I'm sure there are other, catty, undertones, but I live far enough out- and avoid almost all the social life- that I don't notice them.
And because we get WINTER here, people don't see "stocking up" as weird.
