…… What to plant now?

Okay...it's the end of June and my lettuce in the garden has been pretty much a total loss this year. Don't know what happened but I only got maybe two very small sections coming up. But I guess I am ahead of my neighbor with her whole one plant!

Anyway, I read that now that temps are in the upper 80's+, the lettuce is done. It will start to get bitter and that I should pull it up and plant something else in it's spot. I was thinking maybe green beans but I am not sure. Any suggestions?

Here in zone 6a I expect last frost about Oct. 20. You work back from your frost date. I plant late green beans (Contenders) the 3rd week of July and they come off in Sept. Much cooler to pick and process. You could plant any of the summer squash..zuchinni, etc. You could plant Swiss chard...the variety Perpetual Spinach doesn't taste like chard for those that don't like chard's taste. It is very mild. Also beets, carrots, rutabagas and some winter squash depending on your frost date. I figure July 4 as the absolute last date to plant pre-sprouted butternuts. Or you could wait about a month and plant turnips and fall greens like mustard and various oriental greens. Good luck.

Hi Josie,

You can still plant bush green beans, squash, cucumbers, watermelon, flowers & tomatoes (if you live in the southern states).

We planted Sunflowers about four weeks ago and they are about 3 feet talk now. We planted the sunflowers where they will cast a shadow, on the plants in the afternoon, so they do not get over heated from the evening sun.

Like one was saying green beans like Blue Lake, or Beets and can also start Cabbage, Cauliflower, Brussels sprouts or even Rutabaga and transplant in July as a fall crop, the Beet's and Rutabaga's are root crops and you plant the seeds directly in the ground no transplanting.
Cole crops don't mind cool weather and will withstand a number of frost's and seems to improve them.
