CHAT What Living Room Temperature Is Comfortable For You?

When my late mom was in her eighties, she kept her house at 80 degrees. My three brothers all keep their houses at 65 degrees and when we do the annual Labor Day weekend reunion, I have to pull teeth to get them to keep the rental house at 69 degrees. I am the oldest of the brothers and both me and my wife are in our 70s. My wife prefers a 76 degree minimum, although I prefer 74 degrees. Are we abnormal? When we run the wood stove at the minimum temp to run the catalyst (350F), it gets 78-82 degrees in the living room and about 68 in our bedroom.
I'm curious. What temperature do you keep your living room in winter?
 
My wife and I have reversed rolls on this since we retired. When younger I always wanted it at 68 or lower and she wanted it at 70 or 72. Now I prefer it at 70 and she prefers 67 so we compromised at 69. Now that I'm older I want it warmer but still have no trouble outside in the cold - that hasn't changed.
 
My wife and I both prefer it warmer, so 74 in the winter. In the summer, as long as a fan will keep us comfortable, we don't bother with the central air. It'll usually get to about 86 in the house before we'll turn the air on, and then when we do, it's set at 76.

Most people we know complain about how hot it is when it's 68 or 70 outside, so they think we're nuts.
 
After living in a 50-55° house for over 32 years, I now have to keep it warmer due to aging. Sadly, DH has to have it really warm (for me anyways), so it's set at 71°.

The house is weird and it runs a lot warmer in the bedroom. It's 75° or 76° in there most of the time.

If I got to choose, I would park it at 65° and dress accordingly.

In the summer, it all depends on the humidity. I can't take humidity well.
 
Have wood stove going in our small house. I can handle it at 75-77. Hubby is cold-blooded, he likes it around 80. I got him an oil heater for the TV room so he can have it warmer. He likes 79-80+ and its too hot for me. Right now, it is 27 degrees outside, so we need to keep the woodstove going all the time. We've had many days of 30-degree weather and no snow this winter. Strange.

Oh, and when the TV room is warm, hubby still has a blanket on him, wears thermal underwear under his sweatpants, flannel shirt, coat and hat with flaps to cover his ears. That is how he watches TV while I'm sitting there in a t-shirt and long pants. Strange guy.
 
65-67 any time is good. Of course I can’t cool things down in summer if it gets above 70. Main thing is keeping pipes from freezing the rest of the year +60s is perfect.

Some day I’ll regale you with a few of my true-life Alaska stories! Gotta few good ones.
 
DW likes 72. Not 73. Not 71. Year round.

I could tolerate 55 in winter. 85 in summer.
My vote doesn't count.

Side note: I spend a good portion of my Sunday school class experience secretly despising the human race. A couple of old women are complaining its cold on this side of the room while one on the other side is fanning herself. I prolly shouldn't be in a coed class.
 
Daytime 66 to 68.
Nighttime 63 to 65 ( or lower). I have the vent in my bedroom closed in months when heat is on.
When I'm home alone working during the week I set it at 64 until others come home around 4 or 5.
Anything above 68 is just too hot. I also like low humidity.
If someone is cold let them put their long underwear on.

It sounds like he might have some circulation issues? Hubby used to reminisce about his grandfather who, in his early 70's, would come out to the hayfield to help on a 90 degree, humid day, in long pants, long sleeve wool flannel shirt, and a wool hat. And complaining he was cold...

I'm a weird duck. Both wood stove and heat pump. In winter I like it 80 degrees or more during the day and at night with the heat pump running 70 or so is fine. In summer however, I'm in shorts already if it's in the mid 60's and run the heat pump in cool mode if it gets to 74 degrees or so. In the summer over 74 is too warm but in the winter like it 80 or more.
 
Ours has been at 64 for a couple of weeks. Our new (to us) house has 2 HVAC units, one for each floor. BUT the first floor has 20 ft ceilings in the living room, so when the heat is on downstairs, it rises and over heats the second floor, so that thermostat is never turned on. Because of the house design, unless we keep our first floor master bedroom door open, we can’t really use the heater. The living room and kitchen will stay at 57-62 but the bedroom will be much warmer when the thermostat is at 64. It’s weird. But being in California, it’s only an issue for 2 months. Because it’s heated with natural gas and I’m a cheapskate, I try not to use it. But we run the AC from August thru October 24/7 because the solar panels pretty much zero out the cost. If we had a house heated with free or almost free wood, I’d keep the heat at least 70.
