Could be any of many creatures. Set some rat traps using various baits (peanut butter, bits of fruit or veggies). See what you catch and post us a pic ;)

Pocket gophers leave mounds. From a quick search it looks like you have ground squirrels there in Oregon. That's one possibility. Or rats.

Plain old toads dig holes like that in my garden. You can see their face looking out, but when they spot you looking at them as you walk past them, they back up a little deeper into the hole.

Gophers do leave mounds and any moles I've ever had leave a tunnel just under the dirt that you have to press back down before the roots of your plants dry up because they are in the air of the tunnel. Gophers might eat the plants, but the moles are looking for the extra worms and grubs that they can find in the richer garden soil,

Thank you all. I set rat traps out and hopefully will get something. Other wise wil look for mole and gopher traps. Good learning curve for me.

An easy way to kill it without seeing it or having to deal with it and without harming your garden is to put a hosepipe in the tailpipe of your vehicle and the other end in the hole.
Whatever it is goes quietly and gently into forever. Then just fill in the hole.

Chipmunks. Annoying creatures! I’ve never noticed them in my garden like that though but holes sure do look similar.

Had a standard schnauzer who decimated the population in our yard finally. There was this piece of concrete pipe she run them into (or they had a propensity to run into. Well dog would bark for me every time she got one in there. My duty as the human was to get a stick, ask her if she was ready and run the little turd out of the end she was waiting so she could catch it. Worked most of the time.

What you have here though is kind of different looking though. I might try watching in the early morning or late afternoon and see if you see whatever is responsible.

Look more like toad holes to me since the plants appear to be intact. I would get down eye level and see if you can see a toad. As someone mentioned they will back down into the hole so perhaps get a flashlight to see if you can see their eyes. If they are toads build them a house so you don’t accidentally stomp them. Otherwise, not real clues here.

My last resort would be to take a pitch fork and see if you can dig around and see if you can find more clues.

Doubt this is what it is, but I would be looking also for any signs of yellow jackets or hornets swarming before sticking my face down there. Never saw those get in a garden like that, but...

Let us know what you find out. Love a good “what’s in the hole mystery”.

No rats caught last night. No new holes also. In my area we don't have toads or chipmunks or snakes. Still thinking mole gopher or rat. I would love to do the tail pipe idea but the car is too far away. Going to talk with the local grange extension office about traps.

My gardening has been hap hazard learning curve. Usually I only do tomatoes cucs and squash.
Getting real serious about it this year. My husband still thinks it's a waste if timevasxwevsrent big veggie eaters. He went along with a new freezer for meat but rolls his eyes at my potato bags.
