I don't feel like listing everything in my BoB. It contains a lot, it's heavy, and yes, I can carry it.
Basically, it contains what I need to survive for 3 days of cross country travel assuming I have to start out with nothing.

compass? I have 3 - a Silva Ranger, a military lensatic, and a Silva wrist compass.

No matter what, I always have a knife and several means to make a fire.

Have a pretty good sense of direction, so compass is down on the list for me.

My kits are small and utilitarian as they have to be contained in a fairly small container in a car trunk or truck tool box.

A good water filter with its associated equipment (coffee filters, backup water tablets, etc)
A knife.
At least one way to make fire. I generally have one or more other ways on my person if I'm clothed.
An extra pair of good hiking/walking socks.
First aid kit.
A flashlight with spare batteries, now all LED.
Extra ammunition.
A decent AA battery driven AM/FM/sometimes SW receiver.
Whetstone or diamond steel for sharpening.
Lifeboat ration for at least one day, better still three.

There's more but that's what comes to mind at the moment without opening them up. I'm building new kits for the cars so my list is about to undergo change again.

The BOB with pics..

Its heavy (about 25 lbs) but I can carry it on my back since it IS a hiking backpack and it works well.. carry it when I am out of town for longer then a day.

Here are the basics..

The Bag, loaded up.

Main pack center with all gear out. MRES, heat items, small food items, candles, flashlights and way too many things to list in all those sealed up bags.
Water filter, and military tritium compass. Compass cost me about 80 bucks at a surplus place in Cali the day we were moving to NV.. heh even while driving the Uhaul, I had to stop at the military surplus places..

contentsmain.jpg

I have loads more close up pics of stuff Inside, but I would end up blowing up the modems of the poor users on dialup

Plus, if I was really bugging out.. these blue tubs would be in my truck as well :)

While they'll all have similarities everyone's BOBs and car kits will be a little different from each other. The important thing is that once you have yours built weigh it then try moving it some real distance with whatever equipment you plan to use to move it with (as in not in a motor vehicle).

The first one I ever built I took with me on a simple no-rough-terrain five mile hike. As soon as I got back with it I started taking stuff out. I wasn't in the infantry and I don't backpack for a hobby and I had that thing way too heavy.

Ya know.. I have no idea. I picked it up at a gun show for 45 bucks. It is very well made, has yet to break apart on me and its been dragged along with me many a place. I have worn it often as its easier than carrying AND I have worn it a few times when doing my treadmill stuff every AM.. The few times I have worn it yes its heavy but nothing I could not deal with over time in an emergency. It does have a belt that straps around your waist and other straps that fit around your chest to better support it.. I have a bad back from an injury as a kid and I was able to walk with it for a while on the treadmill.. honestly I didn't get tired I was more bored after 20 mins and just stopped lol

Mostly this is a car pack and its for short term bugouts such as a quick 2 day evac from my house that has to be done quickly.. and I know I am returning home. I don't plan on bugging out since I am kind of remote here but if Need be due to a chem spill or some other kind of short time situation, I can take it with me and feel good about what I have.

The frame of the backpack also becomes a stool.. you don't HAVE to use it but it does add some structure to the pack and makes it a bit easier to carry.. it is also super light so I figure I would be taking it with me.

Awesome Lists!

:dstrs:

Thanks for posting all that info. Ya know, being prepped is such an individual thing, so it was helpful to see such complete lists from you all. As a soldier, I got that part of it down. In a disaster, everything changes, including needs.

I noticed a couple of things I would have in addition to the many items above.

passport and important papers
tarps/roll of heavy plastic sheeting
topo maps
I keep a 3' persuader (crowbar) under my seat
scanner
CB/walkie talkies - one for each household
DC inverter in vehicle at all times

Most importantly, have a back up plan for the back up plan. Fire, weather or "unrest" all require different responses. Think 'em out ahead of time. We have a network of 7 households banded together - a great squad. Real bug out to Rangely lakes in ME, otherwisewe can shift local location as the situation allows.

Also, take a look at various backpacking websites for equipment lists, as well as www.equipped.org, for more survival kit info. If the equipment you carry can keep you alive in the middle of the wilderness for a few weeks at a time, chances are it'll serve admirably for BOB material.;) Pay close attention to the "ten items you need to survive" lists that usually accompany backpacking lists...it's tried and true wisdom. The exceptions to the backpacking lists are the addition of weapons (keep it sensible...you may think you need a thousand rounds of ammo, until you have to carry it), a small crowbar, maps, maps, and more maps, and a wind up shortwave. Using the backpacking lists as a good starting point, and adding what you feel your situation will call for should cover about anything you would need. You'll never be able to cover all situations, unless your BOB is a trailer behind a 4X4...and, if you run out of gas, that trailer will be worthless if you have to hoof it from there.

For me, I prefer going light, since I've been an avid backpacker for a few decades now. When you build your BOB, put it on, and if nothing else, wear it around the house for a few hours...chances are, you'll end up taking half the stuff out of it that you started with.;) A BOB is useless if you can't carry it comfortably, and if you do end up on foot, excess weight will just slow you down, and physically wear you down. Fast and light means you reach your destination quicker, and in better condition physically.

And finally, don't skimp on the quality of what you put into your kit...your life may depend on it one (or seveal) days! A bargain is useless if it doesn't help keep you alive in that situation. And know how to use anything that goes into the BOB...knowledge is far more important than any gadget you may have tucked away. All the firestarting widgets are useless if you don't know how to start a fire proper in the middle of a down pour, for example. Your mind is the best tool to have on you at all times if you do have to bug out...may as well sharpen it all you can, while you still have the chance to do it.;)

BOB building could be a hobby in and of itself...mine are always undergoing changes/upgrades. I keep at least one in all of our cars, the attic, etc. I have backpack sized kits, and small pocket sized kits that I can throw into a suitcase or winter coat and leave them there. Call the small kits BUBOBS...backup BOBS. Redundancy is good, until it gets weighty.;)

among other things, i keep a pistol. right now it's just a .22, but the main purpose for it is as a survival hunting gun anyway. i am hoping to add a keltec sub 2000 in .40 s&w (short & weak :D) in the near future. hopefully, in a survival situation, i'll have my regular guns with me, but if that's not possible for whatever reason, at least i'll have SOMETHING to hunt/defend myself with.

I also keep a 10 minute highway fusee (flare) in my pack.

Multitude of uses including starting a pile of wet campfire wood in a rainstorm (which I have done several times), and that nice piece of friction paper on the end that's capped with plastic.

I'll pass on a tip that I heard from someone else. Don't have a bag visible in your car. Cops are often suspicious of bags and might want to search yours. Put your bag in a picnic cooler. That doesn't seem to attract such attention.
