CHAT What do y'all think of Tennesee - as a place to live?

This too shall pass.
I actually met some folks last month that purchased a home here in Tennessee through an on-line purchase. They were Californians, and discovered that their old home in California was worth a lot of money, so they listed it, and it sold within a day or so. So they immediately started looking for a new home here in Tennessee. This occurred during the Spring at the height of Chinese virus panic. They found a home with some acreage on-line and paid for it with cash from their home sale. Overall they are pleased with their purchase. They did have the home inspected. They've had to re-do a deck, but that's about it. Personally, I wouldn't purchase a home, sight unseen, I like to see the neighborhood and the lay of the land. It took us a couple of trips before we found a place suitable for us, and I did a lot of internet research to narrow down locations.

I had a list of a dozen or so places to look at when I came here from Oregon to do my on-the-ground house-hunting. I'd been able to eliminate a lot of places just using Google Earth, but some things you can't see without being there in person. Now, I was looking at a very low price range, so I could pay cash, and I knew that I wasn't going to find anything that didn't have problems. But just about every place I looked at had something wrong that wouldn't have shown in the ad or the on-line mapping, like the little sinkhole right under the corner of one house (which they could, and should, have mentioned in the ad). Or the fact that one house -- with two acres -- had maybe a few hundred square feet of usable land because it was on the side of a hill so steep you'd have to go up and down on hands and knees. Things like that. In a higher price range, and with an inspection, you might be able to buy without actually going and looking in person, but I wouldn't want to.

These folks you refer to might be OK. I will defer to you on that account.

But the LAST thing Tennessee needs is a bunch of rich Californians moving in.

They already screwed up their own state, then they come down here, and try to make the same mistakes all over again. They want to screw up our state up too.

And because they have a lot of money, they think they know more than we do.

But if they really did know so much - why did they let their once beautiful state turn into one very expensive cesspool?

With the flight of anyone with $ from riots in the cities right now, pretty soon all the rural, white, conservative and safe areas will be over run with liberals.
It's happening.
Yeah. I kind of wish these types of threads were private to protect those areas of the country. I always cringe at the "hey the south is a great place to live, you should move here" discussions because right now parts of the south have been infested. No disrespect meant towards the OP.

Thanks for the lively discussion. It’s quite helpful.

I don’t know where I’ll land, but I am confident that I will soon be on my way.

I’ve got a very dear friend that recently moved to Hawkins County, Tennessee, and she’s thrilled with the area. She moved from the Columbus, Ohio area.

Thanks again.

If you are Liberal, Tennessee sucks, unless maybe you are in Memphis or maybe Nashville. ;)

Seriously though, East Tennessee is awesome. Moved here in Tri-Cities area (Kingsport - Bristol - Johnson City) about ten years ago. NO it is not all that hot in the summer. It can hit the 90's now and then, but then, I did move here from Las Vegas, so...

First year we had a couple of good snows, but since then, maybe a good coverage once a winter that melts off in about a day or so. Usually some days of enough of a dusting to make everything pretty. Main roads are salted and scraped. Spring is very beautiful and green. Lots of rivers and lakes, scenic sites, etc. Autumn colors are breathtaking. This is the first place I have lived with all four seasons.

What brought us here was, coming from the southwest, Carry Permits cost about nothing and everyone has lots of guns. Good luck to BLM or ANTIFA if they began roaming streets here. That would be some comedy. Same with UN soldiers. They would be Petered-out and out of ammo long before they made their way up my street... IF there were any still alive.

Homeschool at the time was a big deal. It was a good decision and a great experience in this state. My ladies like JC well enough for shopping and errands. It's too big a town for me and a college town, which makes it more metropolitan. I hate it. They do have protesters every once in awhile, which probably amounts to a half dozen people on a street corner grossly over-matched, but like I said, college town with a few non-locals attending, so...

Everyone, for the most part, is so polite. You CANNOT be in a hurry to get anywhere because it is a slower life. When we first came into town in Kingsport we needed to pick up some items real quick and went into Walmart. No bilingual signs at the time. First thing I noticed was it was not over-run by people who could not seem to speak English or thugs with pants down at their knees. There are, as with anywhere these days I guess, the occasional crack head. I live up the road a bit in Church Hill which for a couple years running has been The Safest City (haha... small) in Tennessee. Murder is usually a family member or former friend. No gang activity. Thieves and robbers are usually rounded up pretty quick. Like, a few hours or a couple days.

What else? Churches. I was disappointed moving here in the Bible Belt that, even though there seems to be a church on every corner, not as much attendance as I thought. Lots of mid-Liberal Methodist churches. Many SBC churches that, like the SBC itself, have gone off the rails for the most part, and not so biblically grounded. Don't get me wrong. There are a few, but they are the old school alter call types. There are the Emerging Type churches too with names that sound more like a Condo community. If you are like me and more of a Reformed tradition, good luck! There are some here so-so. I just jumped in with a church plant in Kingsport that is proving to be Bible and Christ centered, with a pastor more like the now famous Dr. John F. MacCarthur of Southern California fame at Grace Community Church that Los Angeles is fighting to close down. More of a Teacher than a preacher. This church is The Master's Church and has no denominational affiliations and, like Grace Community, is Reformed with respect to teachings on salvation, yet "Dispensational" where end times and church versus Israel perspectives are concerned. VERY rare in this part of the country, let alone the state.

The housing is cheap compared with the rest of most the nation. I about choked when I went to register my vehicles. Two of them for way under $100. I thought at first they maybe made a mistake. You might get a speeding ticket and it may just be $50. Try that in a big city. I have yet to run into any Karens anywhere because I refuse to wear a mask anywhere.

Hope all that mess is informative and helps.

I too am in Hawkins County and agree. I am in Church Hill, the safest town in the state, they say.

Check the politic's, not as great as many think.

'hot in the summer'???? Really? Probably cold in the winter too.

Well, west maybe. East Tennessee is good. Memphis and Nashville bring the state demographics down, of course. But the state is as red as can be.

My only comment -- I heard they have a lot of snakes. It is on my list, in my head, of places with snakes.
I have seen maybe two garden variety so far. But there are spiders. I'd say, this is quite woodsy, so there is wildlife. Deer, squirrels, racoons, blue jays, cardinals, fireflies (lightning bugs, some say) butterflies, dragonflies. If you don't want critters, stay in the big city and deal with the two-legged critters.

I live in grundy county Tn on the plateau, moved here 7 years ago, wife is native ridgerunner from east tenn, I'm a hoosier, We get along fine with most locals, there gonna be people you dont care for anywhere. I have seen 13* difference in the summer between here and chattanooga, most of the time its more like 7 or 8* cooler here. Lots of new people moving in from all over, living in sheds, tepees, campers, not much in the way of zoning nazis here, the north end of the county especially. Main reason I left indiana, zoning nazis will come onto your property to check for compliance and not even ask. The main drawback here is lack of jobs and entertainment. There is not one golf course, public pool, or theater in the county. It is a four wheeler paradise, lots of trails and police dont get excited about folks riding them on the streets and highways, see this everyday.
