I have two freezer full; but do consider a power outage and the need to be able to quickly can stuff. I too; have an uneasy feeling that something may be starting in September. Have been slowly buying canned tomatoes and tomato paste. Was at COSTCO last week and they had NO tomato products on any shelves! I hear there will be a shortage of rice and pasta in the near future; so I am buying bags several times a week as to not draw attention to stocking up. With a coin shortage; will come small bill shortages and then no cash...then there will be no buying of any groceries...I think we only have about 45 days to get our ducks in a row...but, that is just my feelings on the matter.

People have been talking about storing fats.
It comes to mind that canned Crisco seems to last forever on the shelf.
Not the best fat..but after it opened it can go rancid..but not opened seems to about indefinite. I always keep a few small cans around.

I enjoy seeing this thread on the main for the variety of responses. I read the other in the prep forum weekly (all those who replied - check it out). For me it’s helpful to see what others are thinking - often gives me ideas

For us - we’ve been focusing on some “mental health” this week as it’s our last day at Outer Banks. Loved getting away. We are blessed to borrow a friend’s 4wd and drive out to the beach where no one is near us. It’s been precious time with my kids (who are young adults and living on their own).

Prep wise - ordered a food saver and some bags as well as vitamins.

On the list to address soon: filling propane tanks, firebricks for winter, and continuing to fill the freezer/top off preps.

Little by little. Day by day.

1) Continuously stocking up on ammo (we have a variety of firearms)
2) Planted grapevines and other food items
3) Heading to TSC later today to stock up on fish antibiotics (by the way, if you haven't heard, retailers like this are being made to stop selling them)
4) Continue building our community (working toward self-sustaining- solar, composting toilets, etc)
5) Piglets next. Full grown pigs have a variety of uses, and after a bit, you can use them for some needed hormones (insulin, for example)

I've been working on getting in better shape. Currently concentrating on doing more cardio exercises.

I've been slack this year what with the gym at church being closed due to the virus. Plus the government decided to shut down hiking on the AT or in reality they shut down the parking access to the AT so even though I am only 6 miles away from the trail it's hard for me to just get in the car and drive over there for a quick 1 hour hike. I have a rowing machine but I don't like to do the same exercise every day as I feel you plateau with the effects.

So I went out and ordered an airbike exercise bike. In my case I went with a rogue eco bike. Had to order a new bike since the used market is just crazy now with folks building up home gyms and used prices are sometimes greater then new. If I had still lived in Atlanta I might have been able to find a gym going out of business and scored used commercial equipment but in this rural area that option is not open to me.

Sometime around black friday I'd like to add some plate loaded weight equipment as I don't always feel comfortable using my bench press without having a spotter around.

Over all my goal is to hopefully improve my health. IMO if things continue to slide then access to medical care might be more difficult to obtain in the future. And if the Dems win I'm sure that government run healthcare will be toward the top of their list. And again IMO budgetary considerations will cause certain conditions and certain age groups to have their healthcare rationed. So we'll be more on our own to keep ourselves alive.

there are 4 cups of flour in a pound
4 cups of flour make one loaf of bread
there are 20 cups of flour in a 5 pound bag
there are 5 loaves of bread in a 5 pound bag

if you eat 2 loaves of bread a week, you need 8 pounds of flour for a month.

Neither here nor there.
Finished assembling med kits for all the vehicles. Got the parts and pieces from skinny medic.
Also ordered 250 20 gauge #4 shot shells from sg ammo to add more cushion on to that supply.

where did you order it from? I can get #6 here no problems but other sizes are scarce as hens teeth.

I remember reading how during WWII the Europeans were starved for fats and oils. So I've added several pails of shelf-stable lard to my storage. Also put a whole beef in the freezer and will be eating, canning and freeze-drying that.

just make sure that lard isn't in metal pails if you want to freeze it >>> it's about the only way you can kill it off - the metal concentrates the freeze and cause a burn & spoiling ....

Just thought I'd post this idea for anyone making a medical kit.

3M Vetbond Tissue Adhesive, 3ml Bottles w/MSDS

This popped up on my FB newsfeed, intrigued, I clicked on it and it's on Amazon.

I think this is a good product to keep in your medical ditty bag, in case you cut yourself and don't have a doc around to stitch you up.

Upon going down the page to read the reviews, there were pics from customers who used it on themselves and one said that it worked better on her hand than the adhesive her doc at urgent care glued up and taped the day before which opened up. So she used this product and it stayed glued.

So this might be an excellent item to have on hand for yourself or any pets you have. V

Vet Bond does work. Just do some reading on cautions, etc...the main thing is to *never* glue a dirty or contaminated wound. If you literally have no choice, at least leave a minimum 1/8th inch gap unglued at one end (preferably the end that woukd naturally drain by gravity)... if it gets infected, it at least has a way for pus to drain (and to flush it with colloidal silver or another mild disinfectant) without having to either surgically open it or wait for it to burst open on its own.

And even "clean" cuts (kitchen knife slipped) should be thoroughly scrubbed and disinfected before gluing...

And before you think you'll ever need the glue do a test patch on the inside of your arm... this allows you to know if you are allergic to the glue or not.

Nothing unreal exists
solar and battery items might be top dollar at the moment
I just priced-out a set of (flooded) solar batteries (Rolls Surette S6 L16-HC; nothing fancy). For anyone who might also be considering a purchase, I found prices to be in line with what I've seen in years past; Very pleasantly surprised. Also, the Distribution Centers are apparently well-stocked in this model.

I placed the order.

I got a call today from a ortho surgeon for a knee replacement. I have VA health care and this surgery has been batted around for years now. The VA’s answer is to keep you well supplied with pain meds, especially the addictive kind. Pain gets worse? Just increase your pain med dosages. It’s a dead end for sure.

so President Trump signed an order that makes it so that if you are a certain distance or certain times away from the VA hospitals OR if you cannot get an appointment with if a reasonable time. Then the VA will pay for you to go to civilian Drs.

Civilian Drs don’t mess around. So I got a call from the VA last week about an appointment request I made in November 2019. Yeah 9 months. so I get assigned civilian Drs.
My first appt is this Thursday. Wow just wow!

Hopefully I can get this surgery and be up and walking by election time.
That’s my prep for today!

Received a new scope today. Put it on one rifle and the scope I removed was installed on a different one. Then sighted in both rifles. Just getting a little better optics on things here. Have one left that I might possibly change out yet.

I've been getting various packs of .22LR from Bass Pro/Cabelas when I'm in the area where they are located. Today I got some more canned chicken. My firewood is fine. I'm not a huge wood burner, mostly on days off. I was able to deal with a lawn mower issue and thankfully doesn't appear to be a transmission issue, so hopefully our current mower last a few more years at least.

On my wish list:
-Spare part kit for AR-15 (any suggestions, and links would be very appreciated). Also looking for a hand guard that has rails on all four sides. Eventually would like to get some sort of red dot type optic for it. I figure if future sales of ARs get banned, optic options might fall and prices could skyrocket if demand isn't there.
-True gun safe. A guy locally has been selling for at least two decades. He sells safes with full plate doors. This is around $2,000 for just a small one.
-Need to work on home security. Need to get a motion detector installed for the alarm system. Also looking at cameras for the exterior doors.
-Would like to get a case of 9mm
-Glock 23 and a Keltec Sub-2000 to match

Basically, I need about $5,000 to fulfill my wish list!

Pulled down some of the gourd plants (not edible) in preparation for beets, leeks, Brussel sprouts and snap peas and malabar spinach to do what the gourd leaves were doing and providing shade, but also food.

Put up 33 large round bales, I am now a year ahead on oil, filters etc for tractors and trucks. Wife dehydrating onions, garlic, canning new potatoes. Added 500 watts to the array. Serviced diesel generator. Ferrelgas topped off propane tanks. Bought 500 pounds sand for slow sand filter in the well house. Good for ten years.

Just another day.

Last Wednesday I was working at our bosses home and his wife cleaned out the storage area . She threw away a very lightly used Coleman gas stove and gas light. I politely ask if they were trash and quickly placed them in my truck. They both worked good perfectly. You can never have enough good Coleman gear. I ran the serial numbers and they were manufactured between 1967and 1970. I have purchased some extra fuel and intend to purchasing more fuel until I get an ample supply.

I made about 5 gallons of beef/vegetable soup ----I was trying to use up some older canned vegetables 2017/2018
So I got some tomatoes from the garden--about 25 or 30 and started cooking them down--added some garlic and onions--
got a couple of jars of peas and a jar of green beans added a quart jar of potatoes and a some butter beans--picked about 30 or 40 pods of okra---had to buy some corn from the store but most came from old stock of canned and frozen stores
browned 3 lbs of ground beef and added to the mix --cooked on low for 4 hours
my wife had some for supper with cornbread ---will freeze the rest

I bought a Sunnyboy solar grid tie inverter today. It will do a couple of things, if the grid doesn't go down, the grid tie will help offset my electric bill. If grid goes down it has a separate power plug that will provide 2000 watts from my soon to be purchased solar panels to run things during the day when the sun is shining. I also have a couple of 200 amp hour batteries that can be charged by it as well.

I'm also thinking of buying some of those good flagpole solar lights, those things light up my flag all night, I could use a couple of them as backup light if the grid went down.

Hog farmers can't get rid of their hogs so this weekend a buddy and I will buy and butcher a hog to split. So I will need another freezer to store it all, hope I can find one. May try to smoke the ham as well. I will have to learn how to do that.

That will be my week.

I texted a family member who does the Costco shopping trip twice a month. Simply asked if she could pick me up a 50 lb bag of sugar and flour the next time she does a trip.

She happened to be nearby on another errand. Then magically, two big sacks showed up at my doorstep. I thought I'd have a couple weeks to deal before they showed up to have to out them away. Lol, off to the empty chest freezer for now. Gonna have to get buckets and lids later to properly put them away.

Assembling most of my spare parts into full guns. These include fugly weird color anodized lowers that were color samples, soon to be spray painted camouflage. I am 3d printing pistol braces and handguards on two machine right now. I have had them running 24/7 for 2 days and will run for three more. I have a pile more lowers, upper and barrels but need more lower parts kits (Down to four unopened kits) and bolt carrier groups. I wont be buying them now at the stupid prices, but will have these built and ready to drop them in when a dealer that I know gets in a bunch wholesale.

2 daughters, 2 grandkids living in FL, financially vulnerable. Not practical or feasible for them to move here, or for me to move there. My finances are more stable than theirs. I'd been wanting to help them out with pantry items and realized shipping can be EXPENSIVE. THEN I remembered that I have Amazon Prime, and THEY ship for free! Been lootin' and pillagin' on Amazon, for them AND for me. I intend to keep it up as long as I can.

Did inventory today for power outages. Lamps, battery-powered fans, and batteries in good shape, as well as charcoal and grills. Went through the house searching for my single burner dual fuel Coleman store. Alas, another item that didn't make the move. Ordered a new one. Glad I checked!

I used to have a double-burner Coleman stove, which I highly recommend if you are doing extensive meal prep. The single burner is great for one person for a quick pot of coffee or a one pan meal. Over the years, I've used the single more than the larger stove. Here's a photo.

I take this stove with me on road trips. It's too heavy for back packing, but for car travel, it's fine. I make "boil in the bag" meals and then heat them up in a light pot.

I have the propane camping stove. I USED to have a "Sun Oven" solar oven, and I used the Hell out of it. but left the damned thing in AR when I moved to MI. (Limited cargo space.) Planning to purchase another when finances line up right. Need to pick up more propane canisters, too.

As info, if buying a Coleman stove, buy one of the gasoline powered (dual fuel) stoves and then a propane adapter. These are available from Walmart and Amazon. They will give you the flexibility of using either propane, Coleman fuel, or unleaded gasoline.

There are some good plans online to build a Sun Oven for short money.

The propane camp stoves are great because they have no odor and can be used indoors. The liquid fueled ones should only be used outside.
