3rd cannerload of tomatoes done, Bloody Mary mix for Xmas Day brunch with leftover strained juice. More tomatoes ready next week for #4 batch. Got dried bulk hot peppers bought to make holiday "cook's wreaths" with dried green herbs for a kitchen as gifts. Still have a dozen lavender/sage bundles from last year's sage. So this year its wreaths. After seeing Iowa get power knocked out, makes me realize how much harder canning is over a woodfire and much nicer on a stove. Git er done.

Bought about 12 pounds of light and dark brown sugar at Wallies $1.67 a two pound bag. Looked all over the place and the generic is gone. If you can find it might be worth your while to pick up some. My Wallies finally got baking mix back in and I bought 4 boxes for biscuits and pancakes/waffles. Some bacon or sausage on the side and instant dinner

Yesterday I went to walmart and dollar tree and did a big, expensive, shop.

Today I went to Dollar General and bought more stuff, including more body wash for DH.

And I just place another order at walmart.com for more flour, rice, beans and quinoa.

God is good all the time,

Judy

Nothing unreal exists
  • Topping up the freezer: 20 Lbs of bacon, 10 Lbs of Black Forest ham, 10 Lbs of cheese. Hardly a cranny left.
  • For relaxation: Had trouble with our hot tub a year ago and decomissioned it. Just finished pouring a new slab for it and getting it back in place and wired-up again; Next, reseal the jets then test for leaks. Fingers crossed.
  • 24 Lbs of Cal Hypo 68% for water sanitation (emergency or spa)

Dehydrated a few scrambled eggs. Today I'll see if I can eat them rehydrated by steaming them (can't wear dentures) and if it works out, I have lots of eggs to get cooked and dehydrated.

My power was off for 4 1/2 days. So now I am evaluating what I will do differently the next time this happens.

Was very pleased with the RAV battery packs, very disappointed with the "D" battery operated fan.

28qts of green beans put up yesterday and a half bushel left, 18 freezer bags of okra done. The garden is still putting out a few tomatoes, beans, and okra so will just continue putting those up as they come. Did my grocery run today and just filled in a few holes.

I was never impressed with the "D" battery fans either. (I put this in a different thread somewhere) - Most of the 18volt tool systems (think cordless drills, saws, etc.) have a battery operated fan that is compatible with their system. I have a lot of Ryobi One+ tools, batteries, etc. and their old model fan. I had to use it when a Derecho hit the DC/Baltimore area a number of years ago and I lost power for a week. It was awesome. It ran all night using one of the bigger batteries (4Ah). They also have a car charger so you can charge the batteries while driving around. Maybe something to look in to.

Edited to add - Just remembered that Goal Zero (a solar power products company) makes a USB powered fan. It's little but works like a champ. And of course is powered by any USB storage device like you have. Price is under $20.

Did meat run and scored. Have not been able to find Foster Farm's chicken for weeks around here that was decently priced, if at all. Whole Foster Farm's chicken at 99 cents a pound, I used to consider that expensive. Bought many. But...big deal of the day was 93/7 percent ground beef. Fred Meyer, next to the chicken. It said 5.99 above the 3-pound rolls, I asked the "meat stocking lady" I saw if $5.99 was per pound for the 3-pound roll or for the whole roll. Turns out this Fred Meyer received a huge over-shipment of ground beef and had to unload it....so basically $2.00 per pound as it was 5.99 for each 3-pound roll. I bought 11 of them. I am just shopping to stay stocked up or load up on items that I have not been able to find for a decent price for weeks now. I do what I can do if the deal is right. Today it was.

We (bride and I but also including our local working group) have identified the areas in which we need to be strengthened and have put those in front of the priority list, having found the round tuits I always seem to be unable to find. Ours in particular was outside-the-group comms and going ahead with Sam Culper's Area Study for developing actionable intelligence. Continually honing the skills and sharing with others as they want to learn (example was recent rabbit harvesting and canning seminar which also gave me some good help while practicing their own skills at butchering rabbits! :p)

And every time we go to the store, I've just gotten in the habit of grabbing 50 lb of rice, beans, corn meal, wheat, TP, whatever. There's a local Mennonite-owned chain of stores here which always has lots of bulk food in stock. Which has put me behind on vacuum packing but I'll get caught up on rainy days, if we ever have any soon!

For some reason a lot of peanut butter always ends up getting loaded up into the truck, I dunno how that happens....

The rest of this post, though, is a bit off the subject at hand but still noteworthy, I judged:

This week Selco made an interesting point about WROL (Without Rule of Law) after whatever society-ending event or combination of events happen. This is often discussed as the worst-case scenario, etc. etc. with doomer fiction porn loaded up with many stories of complete chaos and no responsible adult supervision, so to speak, with tyranny having failed and so on.

His experience has shown him that there isn't any such thing as WROL in actuality. What happens is something he describes as DROL (Different Rule of Law IIRC) because power abhors a vacuum. SOMEONE or some group is going to take the reins of power in any given locale if governing authorities become unable to maintain order. And this isn't even considering the impact of Continuity of Government plans drawn up by essentially every governing authority from the feds down to the counties and cities levels.

I ordered seeds for fall planting and starting bedding plants in the greenhouse in early spring. Got a load of garden compost from the garden center and worked it into the raised beds. Planted some with lettuce. Started collecting seeds for saving. Put okra, green beans, and tomato wedges into the freezer. We've got a lot of green beans this year, so I did a little research on how to dry green beans (aka leather britches). I've thought about it since reading the Foxfire books. I might try that if I can find some stout thread to string them.

Bought a pack of cheap stylus at Wallies 10 for $5. Fit one on the car keys for debit card purchases. One less touch on the touch pad with or without gloves. Even works at the gas pumps. Still don't know anyone that has tested positive for china 19 but was at a CVS pharmacy yesterday and overheard pharmacist tell customer they didn't do Covid tests at that location.
Scared me because I hadn't thought about exposure from something as simple as picking up a script. Gonna check doors more closely in the future. Still wearing a mask goggles and gloves inside.

Bought three 50 cal ammo cans at Walmart and unboxed a couple of shipments from SGAmmo. Played Tetris loading the cans to use up all the available space. What I had left over, I loaded into magazines. Nothing is more relaxing than loading magazines (except for maybe reloading ammunition).

Worked all day with several other neighbors building a roping arena at one of the local ranches. Were really building a community and not just an arena. Seven hours well spent working with a bunch of cowboys. They did let me work with them even though I did not have a cowboy hat.

Found quart canning jars at Target.com. Ordered four cases. I generally have nothing to do with Target since they started letting men in girls bathrooms. Only went to a Target once since them and made sure I told the manager how I would never darken their door again. So I guess I went back on that pledge, but jars are very hard to find.

I had a scare today with my new 5 cubic ft freezer, it accidentally came unplugged and the stuff on top was thawded out but still cold. I had pizzas and hash browns on top and I put them in another freezer. It was then that I looked around for more canning jars, seeing as how we have four other freezers with mostly meat in them. Egads, the last thing I want to do is have to pressure can a mountain of food. It just about puts me in the bed just thinking about it.

God is good all the time.

Started looking for easy care cloth napkins..(no iron)
No good paper ones to be found here abouts.
It's been years since I had a formal dining room but when I lived in the big house I found the most wonderful linens at a hospital thrift store run by Drs wives. They would have cost a fortune new. Also found a cashmere coat for 25 bucks but that's besides the point. You might give the real charity thrift stores a try.

Go squirrel green beans is about the easiest canning you can do and then you can branch out. Remember to date and mark your jar lids after canning so you can rotate, east to forget.

Ran across closeout new old stock 20 round AR magazines pretty cheap at Numrich - Thermolds. Ordered five to inspect, if they are Wilsons and still in stock when the order gets here, I will get a few more. I'd rather have 20 round mags for the AR pistols in .300 to help avoid oopses.

Get a different color, like desert brown Magpul’s. Or clear Lancer AWM

Slow and steady. Day by day.
Praying it’s enough.

Got the chimney inspected and swept. We had some long-needed chimney repairs done last month as well as getting the 500 gallon propane tank topped off so now we are good to go for this year's heating season. I picked a dishpan full of beans and also a dishpan full of green bell peppers this morning. I had not been paying very close attention to the peppers, the plants are lush and full this year and the peppers were hiding in the thicket. I was astonished when I discovered how numerous and how big they were. Going to make a double batch of stuffed peppers this afternoon, some for dinner and the rest for the freezer. The remaining peppers will be sliced into strips and frozen for future fajitas or fried sausage.
