PREP What did you do today to prepare for...?

It’s mid July. Our time of relative peace is coming to an end. Could be a month or two or maybe with the November elections a bit later. But understand it is coming.

Ive been guilty of being complacent over the past few years. Real life hit me square in the face like a Mike Tyson punch. However that’s in the past and now...this.

I have been trying to make up for lost time with my preps. Foods mainly.

I am on a fixed income so the money is tight. However I have been able to find dried and canned goods. My older freeze dried preps are still in good shape. It’s the pantry and shelf storage that needs refreshing.

This week I’m looking for cooking oils and pork shoulder to cut up and freeze. I’ll add more salt and pepper to storage also.

what have you done lately to prep?

Thankfully I got 9 cord split and stacked before I injured my lower back.......2 trips to the chiropractor and things are getting better, just stiff for awhile after sitting and first thing in the morning.......but all but 1 cord is done.

We made another biggish run to get supplies at Sam's Club today. That's probably the fifth biggish run we've made in the last couple of months. We have been working on more cleaning and organizing to see what we're low on. I've also been working on the Christmas gifts I'm making. Over the past 2 months, we've ordered all of the Christmas gifts for this coming December. Just have a couple more to receive. We also figured out what additional medical supplies we'd like to get and ordered those. We've been helping my cousin with figuring out what she needs and helping her get some of those supplies. It's funny because now she's talking about it to us as if she's trying to convince us that we need to stock up! LOL!!

We have to get our firewood taken care of yet and need to get the paint and siding for our garage ordered so we can get it on later this fall or next spring. Also have to get more dog and cat food to last for a year.

Slowly but surely we are getting there!

Broke in the new shotgun

What make? Model? Gauge? Barrel length/choke? (If you care to disclose of course).

Broke it in how? How many rounds? Did you pattern it? What loads, what ranges?

Shotgun minds want to know :D

Made a Wal Mart run.Blew $160 on socks over the counter drugs, vitamins, dog treats, vacuum seal bags, cleaning supplies, and laid in a good supply of baking soda. Then went to Aldis and got two cases of cream soup, one chicken and one mushroom.

I would say investing the money instead of blowing it.

Also what I did today is in the prep thread.

God is good all the time.

Started a project a couple weeks ago to allow our prepping stock to more than double. Been stocking those shelves now for two weeks. Went Kroger shopping today and spend an additional $100 on canned fruits, veggies, beans canned and dry, soups, oats, canned meats, etc. Friday spent $250 On preps. Going to Costco tomorrow, will buy more stuff. Not getting caught having to leave home for food, water, or toilet paper after Whitler shuts us down again.

Pick up my new AR9 tomorrow. Ordered 9mm ammo from Midway last night. Checked my AR15 out last night and oiled it up. Checked out all ammo stocks to see what’s needed, as it’s real hard to find right now.

Need to order a red dot for new AR9, more Glock mags, and some more 5:56 to load up.

I'm a bit freaked-out over the talk about something being up in September. Over the last few years I've accumulated a significant bit of cash for emergencies. I'm trying to figure-out if I should burn some of it on a couple larger preps now, or just stay-pat.

Up for consideration:
  • More Solar Panels
  • New set of Solar Batteries
  • A few more cords of firewood

Typhoon X12. Ran about 150 rds through it. Barrel worked loose and the safety cut up my hand. Barrel is my fault. Most likely didnt fully tighten the nut after cleaning it. This was just a reliability test. I run 250 rounds through pretty much as fast as I can pull the trigger and hit the target to test the mags and the shotgun. Ran winchester universal birdshot through it. Was testing some mags. I have an older model that is similar but unfortunately the mags for that dont function in the new one. Good news is the Panzer Arms mags I grabbed ran great. Back tomorrow as I need to start from scratch due to the loose barrel. Got to take the Dremel to the safety tonight and take that down a bit.

If you have the money, and it gives you peace of mind, do it.

My husband has been having a really bad feeling about what's coming, so we've been adding to the food stocks. Fortunately, we got a lot of wood split and stacked before we got sick, so we're back to at least a couple of years worth.

Today I ordered more supplements online and I'm about to head over to LL Bean's site to order him some more shoes.

Oh, and we got a new puppy. :)

I've been tying up loose ends, small things that I've put off getting for too long. Ordered a ground pad for my sleeping bag, adjustable gas plug for my garand. Few other things like paracord. Stocked up on otc meds and food so i can stay the hell away from stores.

What is the purpose of the cash? Do the current solar panels meet your needs? How old are the batteries and have they been maintained? Buying more firewood. Do you have the means to cut your own? You may want to look at that if not. I wouldnt spend it all because you may need some in the future if nothing happens.

Firewood is always good imho. I would fear that solar and battery items might be top dollar at the moment due to the panics, and wouldn't make them my first choices, personally...

I remember reading how during WWII the Europeans were starved for fats and oils. So I've added several pails of shelf-stable lard to my storage. Also put a whole beef in the freezer and will be eating, canning and freeze-drying that.

I remember being told that back then, what the Europeans wished they had at that time were
fats and oils for cooking and soap. V

Same here, but it's me who's having that 'bad feeling' Very Strongly and I have been having an urge to get warm winter clothing and shoes, snow boots etc.

Also, more cat food and other things. V

I played hookie and spent some time smooching on two of my favorite fellas, who'll soon be turning ten and too old for it :D
..and I'm going to write another and tell him how awesome he is, and hope he's never too old or "growed up" to tire of hearing it...because at the end of the day we must remember it is not the Preparing that matters, but those for whom we prepare...and not the big events, but the small, every day joys and connections between us that sustain life and make it worthwhile.

I also bagged up and froze 30lbs of chicken, and processed another 30 lb of fruit and onions. Forgot to save any of it for dinner though LOL

Typhoon X12

Ah, thank you for sharing. Looks interesting, last listed price I saw at Atlantic was $469 - bet the next batch will cost more :D.

Most of a flat should definitely count as a break-in in anyone's terms. Especially if it ate Win birdshot OK. I have seen a lot of shotguns not like Win birdshot over the years. A good field strip cleaning and lube is in order. Testing magazines in a box fed gun is a necessity, if any do not work reliably, mark them for range use only.

I am a genuine old phart stuck in the mud and still like my 870s for working shotguns, my last run with a semi was with a then new Winchester/FN SLP. Still a conventional layout tube fed gun but fast and soft recoiling. Had a Benelli M1S90 before that one, and a High Standard 10A before that. But I still like my pumps - they are oldphart guns and I are an oldphart.

That one should do you as long as you can feed it, but I bet select slug drills with it are a major pain :D

maybe do a little of both. it kinda depoends on what you think of the fed reserve doing massive $$$ prininting that will end up devaluing the dollar and what your purchase power would be. especially if the talk aobut fooda nd supply chain breaking down resulting in shortages and rising prices, , if there are any loss of crops this year again, if covid comes back and is worse causing more panic and riots, banking problems? with blm nad antif who hate everything american and when trump wins will probably have a major hissy fit and get real ugly.

theres alot of factors for the rest of the year and thru winter i think. maybe fill and gaps in preps, make sure your health and teeth are taken care of, is your vehicle need any work, are you safe where you are? maybe keep some cash at home, buy a little silver coin if you want and the rest in the bank. diversify.

i dont trust the economy or the banks

Today I spent getting the new bug out vehicle up to my specs. 2004 Suzuki Vitara 4 dr V6 5 speed 4x4. Any time I buy a new vehicle (which means older and used-new to me) I upgrade and refurbish them into a bulletproof, zero timed vehicle. Ready to go to California at the drop of a hat; that's how I like my cars to be.

Been ordering parts to refurb and upgrade over the past two weeks; today was all new shocks and struts around; new front 4wd hubs, 2 more window regulators, fuel filter and tune up with iridium plugs. Between 2 window regulators last week, the new light bar, LED interior and exterior lights, new brakes with new drums and rotors back and front, new radio, and the dual lighter plug wired directly to the battery the vehicle is almost complete. The EMP shielding is next (don't laugh-living where we do EMP is a distinct possibility).
Oh, and looked for sources for a transmission for the Blazer. It went out but I'm going to have it fixed. That way we'll have his and hers bug out vehicles if needed.

That's what I did to prep today.
