We're not planning to trade or sell anytime soon. This is the first time it's had to be worked on for the most part. The ignition switch is bad, so it's getting replaced. My car is much newer than the Jeep, and just paid it off a few months ago.. We're enjoying the NO monthly payments right now, LOL. Both vehicles still have low mileage on them, especially my car. Like I said, I don't drive much. It's still like new. We always try to keep a newer vehicle with low mileage all the time. Never know when it might be the last one you ever get to buy. If the world holds together, I can see in the future where we might trade both vehicles, and buy one new vehicle. What kind? Cary wants a truck. I want a mid size SUV.
I agree! My car is also paid off with low mileage. His Jeep is newer only a couple years old.

2 cups all purpose flour. 1/2 cup oil, 1/2 milk. i use coconut oil and box shelf stable milk. dump in bowl and work around. dump on wax paper and double it over and run a roller or something over it to flatten it, lay in pie pan and cut off excess.
This is easy for anyone and not much clean up. My grands did it.

I like to use crushed corn flakes in a bag to coat stuff for frying. Less mess
Thank you so much. I recently saw a video where the lady rolled out the dough and cut it in circles and made mini pot pies. I really want to try it.

I'm partial to 'Fryin' Magic' for things like fried chicken and fish; pretty much use an egg dip/flour combo for most other things.

My chicken FINALLY got thawed out enough to can  Next time it goes in one of the less expensive Coleman coolers like I keep in my van for grocery shopping than the Artic cooler; that thing kept 'em frozen - without ice! - since Monday. I had to take the bags out and put them in a washtub of water to thaw.

This is the Italian seasoned chicken breast; since I wasn't sure how the flavor would come out after being canned - maybe too strong? - I'm only doing 2 cases of it. I've got two canners going with 9 pints each in them; then will do a mixed canner of 6 pints of chicken and 3 of beef; and another canner of 9 pints of beef. If there is any chicken left over, I'll fix it for supper or lunches. The OC (but no D) is strong today - can you tell  Those 12 jar boxes are going on the shelf with 12 jars in 'em, by golly!! Hubby wanted to keep a couple of the roasts I bought whole to cook in the Dutch oven, but I may go pick up a few more to can if I get twitchy thinking about the election.

I know what ya mean, Renee. Every time I start dwelling on the upcoming election, I get the strong urge to shop! :)

Me too, but I'm completely out of room. I did order a gallon bottle of lamp oil from walmart at $28. There is no keroscene at the nearest Lowes, but there is in the town where we go to the VA.

When DH and I met I had a good supply of lamp oil, but DH used it all up burning brush. Needless to say I was not happy, when I stocked up the prices were half what they are now. I told him he owes me two gallons and he said okay.

I think he is starting to see the reality of buying extra parts, he's having a hard time finding what he needs. He just ordered something for his new this year post hole digger, he said in case he needs it later and can't find it.

When it comes to buying lamp oil, I've been buying it up for quite a while now. Every Fall, at Walmart, when they start putting out their oil lamps and oil, I would always buy up a few bottles. I believe we have around 50 gals in storage. I plan to buy more soon. I still have room to store non-perishable items like lamp oil in my storage barn, but I'm done as far as trying to continue to buy food items. I'm buying only to replace what I use now. Oil lamps will be our primary light source if things go bad. I also have a drawer full of wicks.

I didn't have that much before DH burned it up, but for one person I had a good supply. And I do have extra lamp parts.

One time, before I moved I found lamp globes at a thrift store for less than a dollar, I relieved them of all they had (the store was glad to get rid of them because no one wanted them) and they have been carefully packed away. Several years ago I collected oil lamps, I had the perfect place in my kitchen to display them. Unfortunately living in a pieced together mobile home (which I'm so grateful to have) they pretty much have to stay packed a way.

DH had a few too, when he packed them away he didn't take the fuel out and the paper he wrapped them in is all soaked with it. In his defense his wife of almost 49 years had just passed away and he was kind of in a daze.

Its amazing in just a little over 6 years what DH had put together around here. We gone from a camper and a school bus and an old camper to what a sweet lady called a village. We are not completely self sufficient, but we could hang on for a long time.

No more room for food, just to restock.

Like you, I went through a phase of collecting oil lamps, too. I have all of mine out and about all through the house. I figure, if I have to use them, I might as well have them where they would be placed anyway. I could use a few more, though, now that I think about it.

The inside of our home looks like an old log cabin, so the oil lamps on display look right at home,.

Those of you with oil lamps should also be looking into stocking some extra wicks if you haven't already. I got started collecting oil lamps when I inherited 2 antique Dietz oil lamps. Now I've got quite a few and lots of lamp oil for them. Also got lots of candles and hurricane lamps.

Yeah, lots of wicks. I have a drawer full of new wicks. About 50 gals of lamp oil, with many, many candles. We have a couple of lanterns for outdoor use should we run out of batteries for the flashlights.

My dad bought me my first oil lamp and bottle of oil when Cary and I got married. He said no home should be without one. That's what got me started collecting them.

Stopped in Aldi's today mainly to get milk and hamburger meat. Also ended up getting a lot more pasta and some dry pinto beans.

I'm in NW Central Florida and today my Aldi's had canned PUMPKIN for those of you that have been looking--might be time to check. It was in the baking aisle and it was the first time I had seen it. They also had cans of fried apples with cinnamon over in the "special goodie" aisle. Regular size (15 oz can) of their store brand, but it was also a new thing for me. Must be because of the upcoming holidays. Got some as we love fried apples when we have pork.

I didn’t do much but did make my usual mini trip to Kroger for canned beans, anything “tomato”, soup, and basically just nib nosed around for sake stuff like always, lol.

I found four boxes of Kleenex brand tissues on the dent aisle for 1.00$ so got those of course.

Nothing spectacular!
As my mother in law used to say, “every little bit said the little old lady who peed in the sea”! :)

Tonight at 5pm, 2007, that woman left this earth to go be with Jesus.

Also today, at 12:12 pm, my stepdad did the same in 2011.

A day, just like those days weather wise, thinking of them, sunny fall sky... very sweet temperatures.

Lots and lots of memories today.

Getting weary of dog fights so spent few hours re doing dog pens and fixing for winter. Dog management is complex here. Making sure everyone gets out and runs etc every day.
Horses were in yard and chewed a big part of one of the porch posts off. Lordy.
Pulled a ton more squash and couple pumpkins out. Have to seriously get the tractor out to haul them all up to house.
Saving some for grandkids to pick.

got em, plus globes and burners. I stocked up on those things a good 12 years ago, living in New Orleans I thought a "Hurricane" Lamp was an essential.

so I made and unscheduled trip to a smaller town than usual because I found the big bottles of lamp oil there at a decent price. I got four bottles, and they had canning jars, I got two cases of quarts. I want about twelve more cases to feel comfortable with my supply.

The walmart I went to (not a super WM) looked pretty well stocked. I really tried not to buy anything but the jars and lamp oil, but I failed.

This smaller town also has a Dollar Tree. They had the chili that DH really likes and I replaced what he'd eaten since I was last able to replace and I cannot tell a lie, I bought 4 extra cans. Last time I went to Dollar Tree I came across some rasberry preserves from Egypt. I bought two more jars. And they also had asparagus tips in jars with a date of 2024, I bought 4.

So I spent all my mad money for awhile, but I'm happy with my purchases.

Oops....a little side trip here...your mention of horses chewing on the porch post. Years ago when one of my kids was 13, she took my car for a little joy ride while I was at work. I drove my truck to work that day. When I got home I noticed right away that my car was not in the same place I had left it the day before. I also noticed marks on my bumper, and that led me to noticing that there were large scrape marks and bark gone from the tree next to the bumper of my car. I asked my kid if she had fun on her joy ride??? I was just kind of guessing at what she had done. Of course the deed was denied! So I asked her how the bumper had got scratches and how the tree had a big scrape on it? Her answer.............."Oh Annie (her friend) had come over with her horse and it was hungry so it ate the bark off the tree, and then tried to chew on the bumper." I was so flabbergasted at the explanation off the top of her head, all I could do was to laugh and walk away. Years later she told me how scared she had been while she was joy riding.. LOL. From that point on, when ever one of her kids had a fender bender, I would always say, "Oh, it must have been Annie's horse." lol

DH asked me what he owed me for lamp oil and I told I had that covered, he still needs to get the two gallons of kerosene at Lowes in the bigger town when we go to the VA.

I tried to get out of actually going to the VA for my check up but was told no more phone visits. No reason other than I really don't want to go to town.

I got a bag of frozen shoe string potatoes to put in the dehydrator, I dumped them all on one tray, probably should have used two trays, I'll check them in the morning and if need be move some to another tray.

I think I posted this when it happened, but the plastic bottom of one of my jars of lamp oil disintegrated, and it made one heck of a mess. Those bottles don't hold up very well, for me, anyway. I've only got maybe a gallon of lamp oil now, but I do have about 15 gallons of kerosene in storage and need to get some more. I don't keep it in the summer because it gets stale.

I remember you posting about those plastic bottles. It was your comments that prompted me to go buy gasoline containers just to store my lamp oil in. I had 25 bottles already stored, and they were all still fine, but I emptied all that into a gas container. Cary bought several more containers, and I've been adding more oil, since then. I took what you said to heart. Thank You. :chg:

I've ordered wicks because of this post. Candle and oil lamp. I have oil but should probably get more.
I'm still buying food preps but I'm also filling in the otc and need more dog food.
Getting ready to plant some cold tolerant seeds. We got our new elderberry bushes planted and need to mulch those. I'm going to go back out to Lowes to see about a few more blackberry bushes.

Dh almost has his meat processing shed completed, including an air conditioner. It looks like an outhouse.

Now he is taking the siding off the three sided enclosed porch on my camper. He's extending it 6 feet, so the floor space will be 6x10. It will be enclosed on three sides and I''m trying to talk him into screening the front part (one thing to keep the wasps out).

I was going to put my gas stove on the screened porch, but I've decided to put it on the camper porch instead, which is closer to the propane.

Canned up more potatoes and turnips. I don't care too much for straight turnips, but if I mix half and half, I can't tell the difference to straight potatoes as much. Worked more on the pantry (organizing and re-arranging) and getting ready for DD's visit. Retirement project continues on - slow and steady.

I was preoccupied with something in my mind while I was canning chicken yesterday and filled all 9 jars with chicken instead of putting beef in three of them as I had planned, so I'm just going to put the 3 jars that I don't have room for in the boxes in the current use pantry. Both times I was canning the Italian seasoned chicken breasts, I had a couple left over so just pan fried them. They were really nice and tender and I didn't notice any of the Italian seasoning flavor - I used Fryin' Magic to coat them, so maybe it covered up the Italian seasoning. I'm really, really wanting to go get a few more of the 5#/$6 bags to can - don't know if fall has me in squirrel mode or what

And speaking of squirrels... they are going hot 'n heavy on picking up the walnuts in the side yard - and on stealing the stuffing out of my porch rocker cushion  There are several black walnut trees around the farm, so it's not like they ought to HAVE to come up in the yard to get walnuts - and they usually don't; I have to go out and pick them up so I won't break a leg.... it doesn't leave me feeling real comfy about the coming winter weather-wise. I'll take my new 2021 Old Farmer's Almanac to work with me tonight to read on my lunch break and see what it says

Usually this time of year I'm seeing canned tomato sales - but I'm not even seeing tomato juice on sale, though there are some coupons out for 60 cents/3 cans Red Gold tomato products. I have a pretty good stockpile so am not too worried.

Well, the laundry is in the dryer (they are combining beans nearby and the wind is blowing it right toward the house so no hanging on the line today), dishes are done, and I'm trying to find something else to do before I give up and run in town to Dollar General to pick up a few sale items.

Then I need to try to catch a decent nap (even though I only have to work one night) because the neighbor lady and I are going to go down south a ways on Sunday to a craft show that is being held in the area where my 3 times Great Grandfather (and most of his 15 children, some of whom were adults with their own families) moved to from TN in 1845. I'll try to con her into hitting the 2 main family cemeteries while we are there - maybe I'll be able to bribe her with lunch!

Cary and I are still living in the Stone Age. We're still using flip phones. Sooner or later, we'll have to upgrade, but will wait as long as we can.
We have flips, too. :)

I got my first mobile phone back in 1991 (husband had one since the mid-80's) and have had many model upgrades as technology improved, as did my husband. We both had jobs where we traveled a good bit of the time. We lived out in the sticks with almost non-existent and unreliable cell coverage and when we retired we kept the phones for trips to town, etc., but still used (had to) the landline at home. When we moved to town after hubby "de-retired", smart phones were the big thing but we're both so damn tight with money we just didn't think it was worth it. We'll upgrade when forced to. We went to a very very low pay as you go because we do take our flip phones for emergencies when shopping, etc. but only our granddaughter has the number. If we were both working and had the same type of jobs we had before, we'd certainly have smartphones because of what they can do. We just don't need that now.

Our little granddaughter kept DH and I hopping both Thursday and Friday! Youngest grandson stayed over last night so the 1/2 bushel of apples we were going to do after his sister went home didn’t happen LOL! We got started after he was picked up today and got the other 1/2 bushel of Ginger Golds in the dehydrator, 1/2 bushel of Golden Delicious in the freezer and 1/2 bushel of Winesap apples in the other dehydrator and freezer.

It’s been such a hectic, busy week and we’re both so tired. Still have 1/2 bushel of Jonagolds to turn into pie filling in the next day or two. I was planning on making applesauce but the way grandson was eating the dried apples this morning I thought I better just dry them instead. He went home very happy with both fresh apples, dried apples, apple cider and two quart bags of venison jerky from the freezer.
