Good Morning, All!

Hope this post finds you all having a good day - or at least a good as possible one! It's a beautiful fall day here; warmed up a bit from yesterday as it's already 46*F; expected high in the low 70's, and clear as a bell.

Men can clean closets, Moldy? Who knew?! I swear my husband still has clothes and shoes from high school.... Sounds like you had a wonderful day!

Sapphire, I love that story about your Hubby's persimmon weather forecast coming true :) The only mild winter I remember in the late '70's/early '80's was early winter in 1982; it was 62*F on Christmas Day - but it made up for it shortly after the calendar flipped over into 1983! Hubby took the snowmobile across the fields the 5 miles to the hard road (highway) where a friend lived and caught a ride to work from there several times that winter!

Good deal on the squash, OGM (I started to type squarsh - which is how we say it 'round here LOL!) We have several 'punkin' patches around here so I wait a little later in the season to go pick up squash after the prices drop a bit as it's much too expensive while the fall decorating season is in swing.

I'm planning to spend the morning catching up on laundry and doing some fridge cleaning, then will run to town to scan my CVS card this afternoon - and, oh yeah - pick up the grandkids while I'm there  They will stay overnight since tomorrow is a school holiday. I want to make a quick run to Rural King to pick up some bird feed, then I have plenty of yard work we can do - or that I can do while they play!

Also on the list is taking a long walk back to the lake, Papaw working one-on-one with each of them on firearm safety, and some campfire cooking - which might be hot dogs and s'mores tonight, but I'll bring out the dutch oven and pie-dies for lunch tomorrow.

While I'm still off work on vacation this week, I need to get the walnuts picked up out of the east side yard so I don't break my leg walking to the compost pile, scrub out the bird feed cans and let them dry in the sun, get another load of canning jars carried in and ran through the dishwasher, start getting the rest of the jars out from under the shed porch as we have a man who is supposed to get our machine shed painted before winter, clean off the front porch, finish getting the last of the weeds out of the flower beds and mulch them, till down the gardens and till where I want to put my next raspberry bed so I can haul several loads of manure from the sale barn and get them put down to mellow over the winter.

It's supposed to rain Wednesday and I'm counting on it to do so - I need to get the pantries cleaned out, organized, and inventoried; I've about given up hope of anyone ever marking something off the list when they take it out. If I get another rainy day, I might start working on the store rooms downstairs.

Well, I'm not getting a thing done sitting here at the computer; better get up and get moving! Take care all; have a great weekend!

A local store is having a 10/10 sale on canned fruit. I only picked up ten cans, because that's all they had, but I got a rain check for more. DH loves fruit. Also got cans of port and beans for .59 a can, got 10 of those.

I am a co-chair of the local school (closed since '68) annual reunion, it was yesterday, so for the last 3 days that's just about all I've done. Tomorrow DH and are going to pick up 120 2x4's that we can get for $1 each.

Had a great Sunday into Monday with the grandkids - we went to Rural King for bird feed and for my late birthday present of a grill to go over the tractor tire rim fire pit. Popped in to CVS and scanned my cards, picked up Papaw's 'scripts, then snagged batteries at buy one get one free plus used scanner (store) coupons worth $3 off $9 and $1.50 off $6 purchases and $7 in Extra Care Bucks; which gave me 8 - 12 volt, 16 regular AA and12 Max AA batteries for less than $8 out of pocket. Hit the local grocery store for hot dogs, chips, and ground beef; then headed for home where the boys steadied the ladder while Papaw changed out the batteries in the smoke alarms; then we all built a fire in the firepit (matches and firestarter cube, sadly; but we were hungry), picked up all the black walnuts in the side yard, roasted hot dogs and made s'mores, played in the fire with sticks (and no one peed the bed ) (Old Wives Tale, for those who are saying whaaa?) and ran around until everyone was exhausted. Got the kids showered and fell into bed.

Up early the next morning in time to have coffee before the first grandkid wandered out; granddaughter wanted to make waffles for breakfast, so we used my Mama's old WWII edition cookbook recipe - the one that she used to make waffles nearly every Sunday morning when I was growing up. Had our choice of toppings: maple syrup from the store (Aldi has real maple syrup), sorghum syrup, honey from the beekeeper (he was working on the hives he keeps on us Saturday afternoon), peanut butter, and my favorite - some of the Dutch apple jam I made last year; heated and stirred before being spread over the waffle.

After breakfast, granddaughter mixed up meatloaf and we popped it in the fridge to rest until time to bake it for lunch. We did another prowl under the walnut trees, raked some leaves and put them in the herb bed, clipped the lavender flower heads and put some of them in the potpourri boxes and layered some in a jar of epsom salts - along with some lavender stems - to make relaxing and sleep inducing bath salts. Granddaughter and I decided to experiment and made up another jar of epsom salts layered with lots and lots of fresh lemon balm leaves; we also picked some and laid them out to dry for tea. My co-worker Buddy came out to bring me the Sunday papers he'd picked up for me the day before and stayed to visit for a while while lunch was fixed - meatloaf, mac and cheese, broccoli, chocolate cake with ice cream for dessert. The kids played outside for a bit after lunch but started getting fractious so I rounded them up and we went for a walk down to Papaw's range, then back to the lake - they found wild turkey feathers along the path and were very excited! Granddaughter told the boys that people used to make quill pens from turkey feathers, so we wandered around the old barn lot on the way back and I showed them some poke berries and told them that people used to make ink of them - also showed them how to identify poke and that the berries were poison! They weren't worn out enough by the time we got back up to the house, so we walked to the other side of the farm and down the lane and around the field to where the persimmon grove is - they had fun picking up persimmons and looking at the owl pellets (they thought the coyote poop was gross  ) but none of them cared for the taste of the persimmons. We circled back around the field to avoid the bee hives; I had another chipmunk looking cheek full of persimmon seeds by the time we got back to the house. They played pretty well together outside until it was time throw 'em in the tub to clean e'm up before taking them home. On the way back to town, daughter texted that she had a client coming in and had not put out anything for supper for the kids so could I feed them? We were almost to town and I didn't feel like going back home, and had some coupons for free quarter pounders (if you have to pull up and wait for your order, they give you a coupon) so we whipped into McDonalds and the kids had supper there. Still too soon to take them home, so we went to DQ afterwards for ice cream :) (That's my story, anyway!)

Today, I've done a load of laundry and gotten it out to hang on the line, walked a little over 3 miles with my friend, and picked up the house a bit. Pretty soon I'm going to go out and finish getting a load of mulch put down in the flower beds, pick some sage, thyme, and oregano to dry and also some of the last of my Mama's roses that are blooming and a bit more lemon balm to add to the potpourri boxes/bowls as well. The neighbor lady and I are going over to the Y this evening for aqua aerobics, she needs to pick up a few things at the store so I will get my coupons/sales in order before we go. I probably ought to get the tiller out and till an area where we want to put down some rock - the boys have been digging there all summer but it needs scooped out level before the rock goes down; don't know that I'll get it scooped out, but can probably get it tilled at least.

And since I've gotten rehydrated from my walk, fed, and caffeinated while I've been sitting here typing this, I reckon I'd better get to work!!

Take care all; have a wonder week!

Finally cleaned out an area of the den next to a set of prepping shelves--stuff either got put on shelves, put in the garage, or thrown away. I had a lot of bags of sugar I had forgotten about! Anyway, that is all cleaned up now, so only one major area to redo.

No sales on anything I need or want this week really, but Save A Lot had some meat on special, so I got a couple of chuck roasts and 4 packages of boneless, skinless chicken breasts (at $1.49 a lb) for the freezer. I had cleared enough out of the freezer that I had room for everything.

Still getting plenty of overtime, though that should be coming to an end soon. Can't really complain as I am started to get worn out from working so much.

I've been getting some supplies on Amazon's Subscribe and Save for several months. However, I've noticed some changes in the price, way up from the month before, so I'm deleting that item. Plus Amazon is sending some of my stuff to the post office instead of being delivered by UPS. I'm a Prime member and expect it to come to my house, the post office will not deliver to my house. I'm going to seriously reconsider paying for Prime, I need to cut back on what I spend anyway. Although most of the time their prices are hard to beat. Maybe Amazon is getting too big for their britches.

Shopping trip today, armed with sales ads, coupons, scanner coupons, store coupons, and a few Extra Care Bucks. Can't find my receipts (may have left them in my friend's vehicle) and can't remember exactly how I did it, but I left armed with a $50 and a $10 bill in my pocket and came home with a few ones and a little bit of change, $7 in Extra Care Bucks, and the following items:
2 - 12 ct pks tp
2 - 18 ct pks tp
3 - boxes cereal
2 - pkg diapers (for great nephew)
2 - containers lavender baby bath wash - great for helping to induce sleep
1 - kids toothpaste
1 - eyeliner (friend put in the cart and forgot to take out; but she bought my lunch later so we were square :) ) I actually had a scanner coupon for it
6 - pkg candy bars (on sale for Hallowe'en, but will be donated to the food bank for holiday baskets through my employer's wellness program)
1 - pair running pants for grandson
1 - shirt for grandson
3 - 6 pk - 20 oz bottles of soda
1 - 3# bag of onions
1 - gallon milk
2 - pgk bagels (pumpkin spice - ick! - for daughter)
1 - bottle coffee creamer (pumpkin spice - did I say ick!? - for daughter
Thrift store:
9 - winter tops that didn't look like they'd been worn at all
1 - black, heavy leather purse (Relic) of adequate size/access to hold a concealed carry weapon
1 - windbreaker for grandson
1 - fleece blanket for dog
1 - trashy fiction novel
2 - pieces of peach pie at the foo-foo bakery when I stopped to drop off my pie plate for the blackberry pie oldest grandson requested for their Friday sleepover at Grandma's house (should have just slid the pie plate in the door and ran, darn it!)

I need to spend $6 on another 18 ct pk of tp, and I will get back another $5 Extra Care Buck; they only had two pks at the store I went to.

The soybean harvest is in full swing right now (corn is pretty much all done); I used to not have any problems during harvest, but for the last couple of years bean dust has been an allergy trigger. Friend was driving and had the air on, but not on recirculate so it pulled in outside air, and the wind was right to blow the dust from the combine right over the vehicle as we went past. I got a good couple of breaths of it before I reacted enough to reach over and hit the off button. Ugh - could feel the reaction almost instantly so hit the Zyrtec as soon as I got home, which pretty much rendered me useless for the afternoon. Not looking forward to the beans across the road from us being harvested - maybe I'll get lucky and they'll do 'em one day when I'm at work and the dust will have settled by the time I get home!

Plans for tomorrow are to empty the last of the mulch out of the trailer (ran out of daylight), then run over and get a load of composted manure from the sale barn if it isn't too wet to do so after the rainstorms this afternoon. The neighbor girl is looking for work, so I will probably have her come over after school and start cleaning out the raised beds in the garden that are done so that I can layer on some of the composted manure. If that doesn't pan out because of the rain, I'll just do some work around the house/machine shed. I'm picking up the grandkids after school on Friday and keeping them until Saturday morning - granddaughter wants to make some Rice Krispie treats and Chex mix while they are here, so I need to clear the island counter and get the ingredients set out so that we can get it done.

Well darn, my eyes are starting to droop again; time to start getting ready for bed!

Take care all; have a great tomorrow!

Went to Save a lot (don't go very often) and got 4/24 cases of water for 9.00, that's 2.25 a case. Picked up a couple of blouses at goodwill, not much of a selection today. Nothing at Walgreens this week that works for me. The 8 piece pak of fried chicken at Walmart has gone up 1.00, still a good deal, makes three meals for us and I also got a rotisserie chicken, another at least 3 meals for the two of us with plenty of chicken each meal. Walmart also has egg salad potato salad for 2.48 a pound, that is cheaper for us than buying potatoes since I don't eat potatoes, Last DH maybe 4 meals.

Publix had 20 lb jugs of kitty litter as a BOGO. We bought 20 jugs. That puts us above my comfort level for kitty litter so we can wait for the next sale.

Luckey's has london broil on sale for $2.88 a lb. I will buy several of those and prepare them for individual meals. Those were about the only things that were good sales this week.

Oh, and $5 face in junk silver. Bought on Ebay.

We go to a small nickle and dime auction on most Friday nights. The last few weeks we haven't gotten anything, they seem to have crap that we are just not interested in. Last week they had some restaurant size cans of pork and beans. I wanted one because I was taking baked beans to the school reunion. But they sold all of them to one person before the auction even started, kind of aggravated me, but nothing I could do about it. Got home and looked in the pantry and found a can just like they had, so my problem was solved. I dumped it all in my largest crock pot, doctored it up, although I scooped out a few servings for DH, and added a couple of regular large size cans of spicy baked beans, DH can't eat spicy beans, so I need to use them up. It made a large amount of beans, I saw beans on most peoples plates, so I guess they were good enough. And I gave the remainder away, since I don't eat them and they were too spicy for DH.

Nothing good at the auction last night and we left early.

Added more tp and 2 - 12 count pks AA 'Max' batteries to the stockpile last night; it was a busy day with the grandsons once they got out of school, so I didn't have time to do much shopping. Granddaughter had a cheer thing today so wasn't able to come out yesterday afternoon, so no Chex mix for me! Made up for it by hitting a Church Youth Group bake sale/car wash after I dropped the boys off today and buying an apple dumpling (YUM!); then donated $5 to have them not wash my car

Do you ever feel called to do something? I was driving past a church and saw a sign 'Food Pantry, open 9-12 Today'. I drove another block; then gave in to the feeling and turned and went back. I had $10 in the 'can spend' section of my wallet, so I walked in and donated it; it wasn't much but I hope that it helps. Sometimes my husband growls at me for giving things, but my life is so blessed that it seems the right thing. Maybe that is why I've been so blessed...

Today's the day to get up on the roof and clean the chimney before we get into a winter of woodstove keeping is warm. Then there's meals to prep for the coming week, and a bushel of apples to turn into sauce for canning.

Picked up a hind quarter, so the freezer is full .... Gonna experiment with canning some beef stews when the weather is cooler ... Heat n eat meals and helping keep the house warm all in one go!
