Whew - busy week last week. Grandkids, Daughter, Friends, Work; those four kept me hopping! I'm hoping for a quieter week to come (but not counting on it  )

We managed to get my co-worker Buddy mostly moved into his new house yesterday - I had to take a couple hours off to run grab the boys - but we already had the furniture and most of the other stuff loaded in the U-Haul by that time. Luckily, one of our co-worker's daughter had some young male friends who were looking to earn some money, so they did most of the heavy lifting while the rest of us packed and toted smaller boxes/items out. We sat the things Buddy no longer wanted out by the road with a free sign and all but one chair disappeared pretty quick.

Based on the stack of boxes on the kitchen island, sometime in the chaos of last week I managed to add 2 cases of 'cooking' soup (cream of chicken, cream of mushroom) to the pantry, a case of chicken noodle soup in case of illness/colds, and a case of assorted condensed bean/pea soup for Hubby's lunches as well. The local grocery store had Campbell's Chunky soup on sale in it's midweek ad for $1.19/can and I had 4 - $1/4 cans coupons, then was able to print 6 - $1/5 cans; have added 21 cans of that to Hubby's soup stash so far and will try to use up the other 5 coupons prior to the sale's end on Tuesday. I have to admit to feeling guilty feeding him processed soup, but if he likes it and isn't complaining, then I'm not going to complain too much either  I've assigned Hubby a 4' length (2' depth) of one end of the 2nd highest shelf in the upstairs pantry for his lunch items - I can't see what's up there, but he's a foot taller than I am so can easily see and reach whatever he puts on 'his' shelf.

I hit 2 different Dollar General stores on the way home yesterday - one grandson was riding the float from his church based after school program in yesterday's parade and was supposed to bring 2 bags of candy to toss but I'd sent 8 in case some of the other kids didn't have any; they ran out before the end of the parade... So, armed with a $5 off $25 coupon for each store, I picked up 6 bags at one store and 7 at the other (good thing I got conned into that overtime shift last week) for him to take to this week's parade. Last week's parade was for a festival that drew in a ton of out of towners; this week's is Homecoming so there will be fewer people - maybe the candy will last the whole route!

Once I get my (and the boys') laundry done today, we will head to daughter's to put together beds, hook up appliances, and unpack at least enough kitchen boxes so that she has pots 'n pans to cook in - I bought a giant package of paper plates and some paper bowls to get her through until she can get dishes and things set to rights. I plan to escape by 3pm so that I can hit the pool before it closes at 5pm.

A quick peek at Buddy's newspapers yesterday showed a $1 Purex coupon, and both CVS and Walgreen's have it on sale for $1.99 this week, so I will pick up as many jugs as I have coupons for - I'm going to be able to clear at least one shelf in the utility closet in the basement by taking the scented detergent I pick up for daughter to her house, so will have room for the Purex.

Other plans for the week ahead:
Pool Monday/Thursday/Friday mornings
Work Tuesday/Wednesday/Saturday/Sunday
Snacks to school Monday?
Can applesauce Thursday/Friday
Parade Thursday afternoon
Football game Friday
Make a pot of cheesy chicken veggie soup or chili to carry in lunch
Pull dried beans and put in basket in basement stairwell to shell
Gather zinnia and bee balm seed
Flag garlic so it doesn't get tilled under
Gather more persimmons
Start switching out boys' summer clothes for fall/winter

Dang, I think I need to go take a nap now

Take care all; stay safe, stay happy!

Fall weather and storms will be here later today. I have my list of fall chores I am working on. We cut and bailed the first hay off the new property. Just a test spot to try out the equipment the previous owner wants to sell us. The mower is rough, but the rake and square baler are in better shap than we thought. When it dries up after these stormes, we are cutting the hay pasture. We may sell some. Hay is in short supply around here. We do not need a lot for our farm yet.

My chickens I got this spring are just beginning to lay once in awhile. I am turning on their solar light at night hoping to help them come on line. I need to send some older ones to canning camp.

Sounds like you have been busy, Digger! What is up with the mower, do you think - blades need a good sharpening or something mechanical going on?

Haven't gotten half the things done on my list this week, but got the important ones done - spent time with grandkids and showed up for work (and in that order  ) We managed to get daughter completely moved back into her house - though Heaven knows if she'll ever find anything again! I ran to town with the van and trailer and picked up the new mattress & box spring she ordered on Monday; we managed to get them in the house but stopped in the hall - it was gonna take someone a lot stronger than us to get 'em up the stairs! Then I stayed to unpack her kitchen (did I mention she might not be able to find things again??!)

I'd noticed last Friday that my left foot was swollen, by the time we'd finished moving Buddy and daughter on Saturday, the swelling was up to my knee and I finally stopped moving long enough to think what might be causing it since I couldn't remember injuring it - duh, the calcium channel blocker blood pressure med I'd been put on. So I stopped taking it and called the Doc from work on Tuesday and was told to - guess what? - stop taking it  I got a call from CVS yesterday to tell me that my prescription was ready; guess I'll stop by and see what he put me on to replace it  I hate being on any type of medication, so I'm hoping it's just one.

I stopped and picked up 6 more bags of parade candy on my way to town yesterday afternoon and dropped 2 off them off at the Chamber of Commerce who were begging for some, then the rest of them (total of 17) and older grandson's wrestling team hoodie off with him at the school; then snagged younger grandson and a blanket and went to find a good spot to watch the parade - even with the extra bags of candy (kids were supposed to bring 2 each), they ran out before the end of the parade. If grandson continues in the afterschool program at the church, I will need to start earlier collecting candy next year.

I put off making applesauce until the boys are here next weekend - they are good at turning the crank on the apple peeler/slicer and I will have Hubby here to help supervise. I'm also going to need to let the beans dry out again as we had a pretty good storm come through - don't want to pick 'em damp as they might mold before I get them shelled.

I'll be meeting my neighbor at the pool around 10 this morning, but I'm getting ready to run up to the town where the pool is early in order to hit the laundromat to use their big machines to wash some bulky items - the sleeping bags that go in our vehicles plus the one I keep at my co-worker Buddy's house in case I can't make it home; and some other heavy bedding items. I also found more laundry detergent that I need to drop by the Legion, and since it's Friday, I'm sure we'll stop by the VFW for their fish special for lunch on the way home. Then it's home to get my scrubs and work bag ready for my weekend at work; might even think about what kind of food I might be able to prep to throw in the work crock-pot this weekend - maybe unstuffed cabbage rolls: fry up some sausage with garlic, pepper and onions, top it with chopped cabbage, then dump a couple of cans of diced tomatoes (one with celery and onion, the other plain) over the top, then drizzle a can of tomato sauce on top of that, add a little water if it looks like it might be too dry, then let cook til the cabbage is tender. Of course, if I do that, I'm gonna have to con someone into making a big pan of cornbread to bring in to go with it and fix up a few more things to carry in my lunch to work this weekend...

I should just about have enough time to make a pot of soup for supper before I have to take off again to meet Hubby at Daughter's to sign the paperwork for her house; will be glad to get that taken care of! Still debating whether or not to go to the football game afterwards - it's Homecoming so it will be insanely crowded (I'm about peopled out after this last week), it's cold and supposed to rain, the team we're up against have pretty poor sportsmanship, and - based on the doc on duty this weekend - it's likely to be the work weekend from HELL... Might just go early and give granddaughter a hug, then skedaddle home to get some rest before I go in for my work weekend...

Reckon I'd better head to town if I'm going to get anything done! Take care all; stay safe and I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Off to the pool!

There must have been a bumper crop of winter squash this year because the farm stands in my area are all but giving it away. Picked up a nice amount and variety of winter squash today. Plan to save the seeds... just in case.

I put up a thread in Granny's Kitchen about how I have been storing my winter squash.

There is a pot of Pennsylvania Dutch ham-'n-bean soup on the stove. Got a hold of some really nice cured ham. Brunch was a fluffy ham and cheese omelet made with thin slices of the salty goodness. Most of the rest went into the soup.

Our last trip to Sam's Club netted a few gallon jars of Mount Olive Bread and Butter pickles at about $3.50 a jar. Time, materials and labor I don't think I can make them for that.

The hay mower is just old. It is a sickle bar mower. It needs some new teeth. But we will pick some up. The bailer was made in 1968, but worked surprisingly well. The rake is old too, but will suit our needs. It helps to be married to a brilliant mechanic. Now it just needs to stop raining long enough to cut hay and get it dry.

We cheked the bees again. Our weak hive is doing better. They have some honey stored. We also gave them a full frame from our strongest hive. It was honey we would have pulled for us, but we have enough. The bee numbers were down some, but it is time for them to drop back for winter.

It has cooled down this week. Tuesday we may drop to about 38* overnight. We had a very mild winter last year. This one may make up for it.
