Amazon and eBay are our online go to's. I use ebay for computers and office stuff. UPS delivers our Amazon.

Worked all morning then visited nursing home and got groceries. Meat was on sale so had plenty of it to put away. Put up the produce and cleaned kitchen and just getting to sit down. Since I have to be up for work now I go to bed at 9 pm instead of 1 am.

Favorite CNA switched units and neither of us is real happy with replacement. She asked us today to remove MILS recliner because it is inconvenient for her to walk around. DH is going to talk to Administrator about rearranging MILS side of room. The other side has been rearranged and is much better. She has a new roommate who is quite nice and can converse. The lady who loves DH was all over him today. MIL whispered to me that the woman liked men and liked touching them, lol. Nurse was in hall and kept an eye on things until she realized DH could totally handle the situation.

Picked up foil pans (at DG) yesterday - $6 for 5 (not heavy) pans. Then picked up a bag of frozen spinach at the local grocery - $3.65. Yikes! Guess i haven't been paying attention to prices except for the sale ones.

Went by Safeway tonight after work to see if I could get some of the specials that were sold out earlier in the week. The store was crowded (weird for a Tuesday), there was no milk, bacon, or the other items I was looking for. The shelves were looking like they did during covid - lots of bare spots. I did text my kids (a couple are more.... sheepish than the other 2) and encouraged them to shop before the weekend to avoid problems.

I plan to go to Safeway again early tomorrow (first day of the new weekly sale specials) to hopefully beat the crowd. If there is anything worth going to buy.

Our grocery specials are few and far between unless you are buying junk, preprepared meals, boxed meals etc. Flour, sugar etc. seldom are on sale. Meat is on sale but still very expensive and it seems like the more expensive cuts are what make the sales.

I hope to shop on Thursday, and a friend will go with me.

My grocery list this week isn't long so I may buy a ham for Thanksgiving if I find a decent one at a price I can afford. The last few years I purchased a Cure 81 hams and last year found a Fareway ham that was similar and lower priced so purchased that. Since I can no longer eat beans, I'm not interested in purchasing a whole ham with bone. I have a turkey breast in the freezer and might do both although we'll only be five or six for Thanksgiving. I'll assign sides to family members!

It has been raining all day, not a heavy rain but steady to light all day. It's supposed to last until early Wednesday morning.

One of my late m-i-l's cousins who was just two years older than me had dropped off my radar two or three years ago. I've learned to Google name/address and more times than I like, I've found an Obit. She passed in March of this year. When someone leaves their home for a nursing home it is virtually impossible to find them. There is a cousin of my late dh's who has disappeared off my radar and I'm trying to get the nerve to Google her. The last time I talked to each of the ladies they were celebrating beating cancer. Worst part of getting old is losing friends and family until you suddenly realize you have more dead than alive family and friends.

Anna, I find single ham steaks at Fareway sometimes, both the hand-sized and the larger slices. I can't eat a lot of ham because of the high sodium content, so that gives me a meal or two without a ton of leftovers. I looked for some today, but I needed to go to the one in Ankeny. I might stop there tomorrow.

I may get a ham too if I can find room in the fridge. We are working our way through that huge pot of stew I made for DH's birthday...that bowl is taking up a lot of room. It's time to freeze it.

With no firm plans for Thanksgiving, the ham would give me a backup. A couple of fresh chickens to put in the freezer would get me through the dressing and a few tubs of cool whip to cover whatever dessert I might make. I'm not wild about turkey.

Just not feeling it this year...too stressed.

I slice leftover turkey and ham and vacuum seal it. I recently found some turkey from two years ago and it was juicy and quite good. I also have ham slices left from our January family Christmas. I slice the meat fairly thick so it can be used as main course or cut down for sandwiches. I'm also considering doing thinner slices and putting one slice of ham and one of turkey per vacuum sealed package as that would make a super sandwich.

Since I did not plant sweet potatoes this year, I'll have to buy those, unless I use some I canned and make a pureed casserole. I have enough white potatoes. As the holiday specials approach, I usually buy several stalks of celery and chop and freeze a year's supply in one cup amounts. I tried dehydrating celery but that doesn't work as it never rehydrates and remains woody. I don't think I'll need to buy much else. Cool Whip usually also goes on sale as do the store brands, so I try to buy extra of that as it keeps a long time in the deep freeze. Butter usually goes on sale, and I buy extra of that to freeze in vacuum sealed packages. Last year butter did not go on sale, so I've watched for occasional sales throughout the year.

Butter was on sale with a limit of 6 at Aldi's last time we were there. So DH and I both bought some, lol.

We are all working new jobs this fall so no idea what Thanksgiving is going to look like. I am done being the one doing all the cooking so unless one of the kids or Grands picks it up we will just be home. The kids often give us their turkeys from work. I can them and use just like chicken.

Cold 37 deg and wet today. Glad we are inside. Supposed to be in the 60s next week.

The slaughter house we use often has beef bones for free. The meat we bought yesterday was a late afternoon 50% off. I put it all in freezer as soon as we got home. We left all of the "iffy" packages behind. Making the drive to Aldi's this weekend. Produce, eggs, and whatever else is in stock. Local grocery prices are horrific.

We had planned to go north to look at the leaves today. But Monday, Hubby decided that was a better day. The rain forecast had changed. Go figure. We really enjoyed our day. We tried a diner we have heard was good. We split a burger and tots. It was good and the people were super nice. The leaves were not near peak and last year on the same day, they were past peak. Hubby says we may go again in another week or 10 days.

The change of plans worked out good. Our grandson has a cough so his other grandmother won't keep him. I told our daughter that I will. She tried to take off early, but there were already to many people off. I haven't told Hubby yet. He is still sleeping. He had 6 spots removed from his head yesterday. They were bothering him last night so I don't know if he got much sleep. The dr burned them off. I don't remember what he said they were, but not cancer.

I went to the chiropractor while we were in town. It helped my hip joint this time. My sciatica is much better. I never dreamed a bone density test would cause me that much trouble. I am not sure I will agree to that again. Two months of not sleeping well and hurting to move my leg was not worth it.

Our power was off a few hours Saturday. I am not sure if it ruined my incubator hatch or not. Time will tell.

I had started taking diatomaceous earth in my coffee each morning. After 10 days or so, I started having nightmares. Three nights in a row. I stopped the DE and the bad dreams stopped. I plan to start taking it again in a week or so. I wondered if anyone in our group experienced that too.

It's light enough outside to feed the turkeys so I need to get busy.

Have a blessed day everyone

I miss sales. It would take over thirty minutes in any direction to get to a regular store and they are all former CV's bought out by Harp's years ago, unless I went an hour to the city and they have ALDI and Ten Box there...it's not a real big city and we don't have many options without driving two or three hours. We are in the hills so any drive would be curvy and hilly but it would be a pretty drive. Heck it's hard for me to get to the city an hour away. If I didn't have a booth there, I'd probably never go.

@patriotgal I may not be wild about turkey but I certainly wouldn't say no to a free one. I'd can it too.

I'm also tired of doing all the cooking. Christmas is easier because you can get as easy or as involved as you want but Thanksgiving has to be dressing and all the sides and desserts plus getting the house spruced up. My oven is tiny and it looks like that extra stove is never going to happen.

DH left me in bed this morning and I woke up at 6:30. I heard what sounded like him cough downstairs but when I got down here, he was gone and the front door was unlocked. I called him and he swears he locked it...he'd been gone for thirty minutes at that point. Two mornings ago I heard a shot from what sounded like a small pistol down at the creek. I think I'll get DGS to come over some time today and he can spend the night tonight.

I'm looking for another dog but not sure I should get one right now. All four of ours range anywhere from old to ancient and there's only one with a protective bone in her body but she's fourteen, crippled and deaf. The others are all rescues who are scared of their own shadow. There is a certain comfort in knowing you have a dog who will alert you if anything is amiss and fight for you with their last breath. I'm thinking black female lab. That's what the most protective, obedient dog I ever owned was. We did have an Australian shepherd who I believe was really a blue heeler that was obsessively/crazy protective in a bad way, if you were outside. Inside she was useless.

Anna 43...love your idea about slicing the turkey and ham and freezing it..

I don't mind making Thanksgiving dinner even though there is only my DH and I left...we lost the last of the Thanksgiving crowd way back in 1990...it was the biggest family meal of the year...we only buy a Turkey once a year..and I make every thing from scratch...just like we always did..and everyone's recipes..I have even in the stove plus a small convection oven..toaster type oven...so after I make the dressing...and get the turkey in the big oven...I make the pumpkin pie in the little oven...

I make dressing for thrashers... it is entirely cooked before going in the turkey so I freeze the extra in meal size portions for the two of us to use with rotisserie chicken through out the year...makes a wonderful side..

We unusually buy a ham at Thanksgiving...but cook it a fewndays after Thanksgiving so between then and Christmas...so we have a number of quick easy meals..I stock up on butter this time of year also..and vac seal and freeze it also..

Since we love different types of canned fish...we also grab different types of crackers on sale put them in glass jars and seal they stay perfect for months..they sales aren't wonderful...but a few cents here and there sure adds up...over a years time...

It's 51 degrees right now with rain. Rain off and on all day, and the temp will be dropping from where it is now down into the 40's by this afternoon. It's going to be breezy as well. Could get up to 40mph wind gusts. We're still just using our little propane heater, because it will be back in the 60's next week. We usually don't start our first fire in the heater or stove, until the temps drop and stay that way.

We will be doing all of our shopping, tomorrow. I don't need very much, but I want to get a smoked ham or two for the freezer. I'm also getting low on family packs of pork chops, so those will be on my list. We aren't crazy about turkey, either, so I never buy one. We always have Thanksgiving dinner at DS's house, and DDIL always cooks a turkey. She always wants me to bring deviled eggs and a pumpkin pie. I already have pumpkin pie fixings here at home, so all I will need to buy extra are a couple of dozen eggs.

No more doctor appointments, until the 24th of November with my rheumatologist. Thank God for the break. Nothing planned other than that for the whole month, so Thanksgiving won't be so stressful for me. Last year, IIRC, I had a doctor appointment the day before Thanksgiving, and the day after.

Doing laundry this morning, and I plan to make spaghetti with homemade meat sauce for tonight. I always make a big pot, so there will be leftovers for tomorrow night, after being in town all day. Just heat it back up, toast some garlic bread for Cary, and it's done. Once the rain stops, I hope to get back to making my own homemade breads. Maybe, Friday.

Our fiber internet service has been going in and out all day. It still is for some reason. Power has been blinking, too, but it hasn't gone off, yet.

Cary had to give in and build a fire in our heater. It's damp, cold, breezy, with rain outside. The little propane heater just wasn't enough to keep the chill out, so he built our first fire.

I just finished putting on the meat sauce for the spaghetti. I had a brainstorm of an idea. I hope it doesn't ruin the taste of it. I used a jar of my home canned ground beef along with a fresh 1lb. pack from the freezer. It looks ok, and it smells great. It's the taste that counts, though. I'll let it simmer for a little while, then take a sample taste test.

Do you find burning propane adds moisture into the air?
At least here in my AO it does. Living in a monolithic dome i try to really pay attention to humidity inside. I have monitors in about 4 places inside.

Not really. Burning wood is a dry heat, though. I keep stainless steel stockpots of water on the wood stove and heater for the purpose of having hot water on demand and to put moisture back into the air.

I'm just getting home. I'm not looking forward to the time change because it'll be nearly dark.

I stopped at Fareway and got some ham slices and canned pineapple. That might be part of a holiday meal at some point. I got more local bacon, too. Beef is too high right now. I will wait a bit longer. I know there will be sales. I just have to be in the right place at the right time.

It's in the 50s here and drying out. I can't believe it, but I'll have to mow again, soon. It's almost November. I hope this will be the last cutting for the year.

The plumber came this a.m. and replaced the faucets behind the washer. Glad that is taken care of now I just have to wait for the bill and hope it isn't at heart attack level! He also did the fall furnace check, and it was okay. Furnace is two years old and should be okay but with the appliances today you never know.

I have natural gas, and the furnace has a drain feature to get rid of excess moisture. When the furnace is running a lot in extreme cold weather, the air in the house is too dry.

Having to drive to shop is a pain although I only have 25 miles it still adds stress to shopping. That is one reason that I prefer to shop monthly. I have a full list for my shopping tomorrow and am hoping to be ahead of all the insanity that will happen after no EBT on the first. The small city where I shop has population of only 25,000 and the stores Hy-Vee, Walmart, Dollar Tree, Aldi and Target are all within two blocks of each another. Fareway on the way home so can easily stop there if needed. Although the population is only 25,000 it is a shopping center for a multi-county area so crowds can be a hassle. High tomorrow forecast as 52 and partially cloudy so should be a comfortable shopping day.

I went to the freezer to check what I need or don't need before my shopping tomorrow. Did some checking of cans and found a leaking tomato soup can. I'm always glad to catch such things before it damages other cans nearby. I'm trying to spend a few minutes checking every time I go down to the pantry.

I'm trying a new recipe for supper, Scalloped Salmon Casserole. I've been going through recipes I've clipped and tossing things I'm never going to try, and a lot have gone to the trash. This particular recipe was handwritten on a recipe card, and I have no recall where I got it. It's my handwriting.

The home canned ground beef worked great in the spaghetti sauce. I was mildly surprised. Cary didn't even know I had used it. I'll be doing the same, mixing it with fresh ground beef from the freezer, to make taco soup, too. It should work good in that, too. Now, I have 2 ways to use up some of this home canned ground beef.

It's still dreary and rainy outside, but with the wood heater going, it's nice and toasty inside. I got to have my first stockpot full of hot water to use for washing supper dishes! I rinse in cold water. I just finished with the dishes. Another pot is going to use for me to wash up with, tonight. I'll get my shower in the morning, but I can't go to bed without washing my face first.

Vac sealed canisters are great! That's how I keep whole coffee beans in the basement.

I've got enough coffee, but I'm still looking for another big box of Chinese Restaurant Tea (That's what it's called). It's a Walmart item but Aldi has something similar. If I don't find it tomorrow, I will make do. I've got other tea put away. It's just an inexpensive black tea with more character than Lipton or the generics. It goes in and out. I should've purchased two boxes when I saw it earlier this summer.

I'm going to do an Aldi run at some point tomorrow morning: I didn't realize I was low on various spices. I bought a bunch of little tins on sale, and they're nearly gone. I'm going back to storing spices in glass containers so I can see how much I have.

Busy day - some shopping early, then more prepping for winter and cleaning. Oh, and a meeting for work in the middle of all that. Tomorrow, it's take-the-dog-to-the-vet day and work.

Feeling really .... unsettled tonight. A co-worker was texting me, that she had asked one of the administrators about the program that I work under. It ends next September, but a second program is planned. However, when she asked about it, he wouldn't answer her. This particular admin is usually very positive and is high level. I've always had concerns about my job security, and this is not helping.

DH also just asked if sisIL might be able to use the guest house again for the winter as she sold her house here and is moving back to MN. There's something in the air that makes me feel like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Feeling really unsettled pretty much describes how I've been feeling for quite some time. It's like the whole world in hanging by a thread and half the world is running around with knives and scissors trying to snip the thread. I'm not a news hound, but I try to keep abreast of major happenings and none of it looks good.

Unsettled is a good word. I'm going today to get my apples instead of next week. I just want to be able to stay home next week and see how things go. I'm going to leave by six, go to the atm, and head out. Rufus is freshly bathed and ready to go too. Of course right now all he wants is to go roll in the mud since I washed it all off him lol. I'm praying they come up with some last minute deal but who knows? I was hoping my coffee beans would be on sale this week but they're not. Next time they do I am stocking up! I just recently started grinding them so don't have a stock yet. I checked amazon and they're higher than the store! Hopefully I'll be back shortly after lunch time and can then make a Sam's run before it gets too traffic. But we'll see how I feel after only sleeping about 5 hours.

Considering the demographic of where I live, I'm not that worried about things as far as shopping goes but who knows, I may be in denial. I told DH this morning we should do our weekly McDonald's run and grocery buying with the grands on Friday night. We often go then just to get it out of the way for the weekend. On the other hand, I have a chicken that needs cooked and I had it targeted for Friday night but it could go in the freezer. Locally, it's not on my radar...not even in the city. I could be suffering from a false sense of security though.

Nobody I know, who gets benefits, is planning any type of protest. I don't think SNAP should be allowed to be used as a bargaining chip but I understand why it is being used. I have ideas for better options like really tightening the borders and how about employers like WM pay their workers a living wage.

The rain has finally stopped. We are so thankful for all that we got. Upper 30's for our low, tonight. I left my straight neck elephant ear outside, but I'll bring it in when we get back from town. I've already moved the rest of my houseplants indoors.

We're getting our shopping done, today. We usually don't go until after the 1st, but Cary is really spooked about this weekend being chaotic. We're going today just in case. I'm thinking of going ahead and buying for the whole month in case this SNAP situation isn't over before December.

Have too much on my plate right now to be concerned with outside events. DH and I have cut down screen time and that helps too.

Was supposed to work 2 hours yesterday. (This is last week of training and we were assigned 10 hours for entire week.) While I was working I received alerts that hours were open. I took them just to see if I could. They were approved and I worked all day. My first couple days were a breeze. Paid for that in spades last 2 days. It's good experience and we have support on hand as we learn. I am enjoying the job and it won't be hard to work through the winter. I have come full circle. My first full time job was in a pharmacy. Now, what I pray is my last full time job, is remote for a pharmacy.

My shopping list is ready for Saturday drive to West Plains. Ordered a couple things off Amazon this am. We like Williams Chili seasoning and I buy it in bulk. Down to 3 packages so that is not good! Preps are good. Will top off stick butter.

We made the run to BJs yesterday...picked up some bulk paper goods..a couple of tins of imported cookies we like to put back for treats later in the winter..to have with hot chocolate when the winds are howling..
They had their wonderful beef shank bones..now that the weather is snapping colder...looking forward to homemade veggie soup...they had huge family packs of pork chops in the $8 range..they will make several meals from one package for us..and great prices on Perdue chicken family packs...
Then we did a quick stop at Lidel..and grabbed some Italian pasta..and a couple of things that only come in from Germany this time of year..
After we got home..the rains started and continued through the night...they were much needed..brought in another red tomato from the garden...several green ones left...but still have not had a frost...it has been in upper 30s..and lower 40s..so still getting a few things from the garden..

Our daughter couldn't sleep last night for some reason. She sent a text that she was calling in to work. So we aren't babysitting today. But our grandsons cruddy cough was almost gone yesterday. He was taking over the counter meds for it. Little girl had a runny nose but no cough.

Hubbys spots on his head bother him. One on the front is weeping more than the others. They look awful, but the dr said they would. I put triple antibiotic ointment on it twice a day. The dr said not to cover them with a bandaid or anything. The ointment helps keep it moist. The kind with pain relief added doesn't keep t a moist. Thank goodness I had both kinds. But I need more of the original without pain relief. We were going to do that on our way to babysit. We may just run to the small town 10 miles away and get it there. It will cost more, but we won't have to drive as far.

I still have 2 plants to bring in. My tropical hibiscus and a lemon tree. I an not sure where to put them. We still have too much stuff since my in laws passed. Also, the Christmas tree needs a spot.

The sun is shinning bright after days of clouds and rain. We were in the upper 40s last night. I am ready to start the wood stove, but Hubby is waiting a bit.

Have a blessed day

The little town we shop for groceries in has a population of about 6k, and it's very rural. We don't really anticipate any riots or serious looting there. It's the lone wolf type of robbing folks in the parking lot, or folks walking out with a cart full of food without paying for it, causing a ruckus, that we have to watch out for. I guess, we are a bit paranoid, too.

We were accosted by 2 black men, twice, while in Tupelo store parking lots a few years back. Both times, it was right before Christmas. I never thought that would ever happen to us, but it happened on two different occasions. From that day, we have never gone anywhere without being armed. Mississippi is a "Constitutional Carry" state.

Try the canned burger in chili, too. I remember that canned ground beef didn't work out for you guys, but using it in strong flavored, hot, "slower cooked" dishes this way, especially mixing it with fresh, you will get your use out of it. :) Good to hear.

That's another great idea! Thanks. I think it's the tomatoes and spices that make all the difference. I have somewhere around 60 pints of it, so it's good to finally find a way to use it.

And I'm back! I wasted no time on this trip. Got my case of Pink Lady apples for eating, a peck of Arkansas Black and same of Ambrosia to make some apple butter. They also had huge cabbages for $3 a head so got two. I can barely get a small one for that price at the grocery store. Rufus had a blast too. Everyone petted him and he spent half of the drive back leaning between the seats watching the road. So a quick lunch and then off to finish the grocery shopping. I'd love to have everything done and supper ready before dh gets home tonight. I might need a nap though lol.

I picked up a few more items from Aldi, but I'm really not overly concerned, as least as far as my safety. I'm prepared to stay around the area or only go to work.

That's why I moved out here. While no place is absolutely safe, the chances of looting or riots in my area is low. The chances of cows or chickens escaping and getting into mischief is much higher.
