Good evening, All! Here I am, slacking off again on getting the thread started for the week

We had a busy - but fun - morning today. Daughter texted "Patiently waiting until 7 am so I can text to see if you want the boys today".... at 6:42am  She'd been on a roll since 5 am - getting things put away and organized as she'd brought some more things home from the storage unit yesterday and was afraid she'd run out of momentum if she stopped to do anything else. So I crawled out of bed and stared at the coffeepot until it stopped dripping, then doctored up a big go-mug full and headed that direction.

Co-worker Buddy texted shortly after I got to daughter's to ask if he could borrow the boys today to help him pick up sticks left in his yard from the windstorm yesterday - what with them being so much closer to the ground than he was and not having artificial knees in to the bargain.... I think that it is good to teach the boys to help others so let them know that we were going to go help. We made one short stop at WM, then pointed the van his direction. It took about 2.5 hours, but we got all the big stuff picked up and broken into shorter pieces, and I raked up all the smaller stuff and leaves; we bagged those for me to pick up later in the week to dump on top of the trees and bushes I made cuttings of this year to help protect them a bit from the cold. With two big maple trees in his yard, I'm sure I'll end up with enough leaves to take care of those and likely the strawberries as well. The boys said they are looking forward to coming back over to his house to help so that they can jump in the leaves - I will have to remember to bring the small rakes!

Buddy ordered pizza for lunch, but I begged off and left him and the boys waiting on the delivery while I headed for Goodwill and Aldi. This coming week is 'Say No to Drugs' week at school and they have a dress-up activity each day - I feel for the parents who don't have grandparents handy or a budget that lets them do all this stuff. Monday is dress up day - both boys had grown out of their dress shirts but I found some in their sizes on clearance for $3 each when I popped in to WM earlier in the day, and both had ties, so that was taken care of.

Tuesday is 'Decade Day' where you dress like the decade of your choice - that's going to be taken care of by rolled jeans, white tee-shirts and slicked back hair.

Wednesday is 'Tell Drugs to take a Hike' so camping gear is suggested. We don't wear anything special for camping so I suggested just putting 'em in camo but daughter said that was hunting not camping, so I found a camp shirt for one boy and a fishing looking vest for the other at Goodwill for 99 cents each; might try to find some boonie hats to go with them and strap a fanny pack around their waist.

Thursday is Future Day - dress up like what you want to be in the future - older boy is going to wear one of my white lab coats from my early days in nursing (it almost fits him!), safety glasses, a pocket protector and a couple of test tubes in the pocket - he wants to be a scientist. Younger grandson has watched a few too many 'Forged in Fire' episodes with Papaw - he wants to be a blacksmith and 'make weapons'. I figure I did my part by braving Goodwill on a Sunday and spending $6 on a brown leather bomber jacket; now Papaw is doing his part by cutting said jacket into a leather forge apron. We're still trying to decide which one of us will be making a papier mache hammer to go along with it (unless we can find a horse shoe somewhere between now and then; not wanting to send a toy sword to school.)

Friday is - Thank Heavens! - School Spirit day so school shirts/colors are suggested; I've already got a good stock of those thanks to various sports the kids have been in.

Tomorrow, Hubby and I are going to level an area by the compost frames and set up another set of frames to start a new pile. I need to harvest the potatoes that sprouted and grew in last year's compost frame; then add a layer of leaves, I will plant sweet potatoes or melons in this frame next spring. This year's compost frame will get a wheelbarrow load or two of soil dumped on top to bump up the mircoherd; then it will also be topped with leaves for the winter.

We managed to get all the house plants moved inside the house before the windstorm/temp drop yesterday, but settled for covering the rooted cuttings and the rest; looks like they all came through it okay, but I will be potting some of the herb cuttings up to bring inside for fresh use this winter. I also need to dig a few of the small lemon balm plants I allowed to grow in one of the flower beds and pot them up for fresh use; then pull the rest to dry for use in tea. I also need to pull the dried pole bean pods now that they've dried out; and pull the dried zinna seed heads as well. The marigolds are still blooming so it will be a while

The sunflowers that were planted by the birds have been stripped of their seed by the finches, but I have three millet (I think) plants in a flower bed that were planted by the birds that I let grow - I'm keeping an eye on them and hope to catch the seed crop so that I can measure the yield before the birds eat it.

Holiday/seasonal items are starting to show up at Aldi - I found chopped dates in the dried fruit area today so picked up a couple of bags; I will add a couple of bags each visit until I have a year's supply; vacuum sealing them for storage as I build up a stockpile. I also lucked in to two bags of dried cherries at Aldi - they usually disappear as soon as they are set out. They are great to use in oatmeal, muffins, or to make a sauce to use over pound cake.

Guess I'd better finish this up and get it posted - don't know if it was chasing the grandsons or all the fresh air and outside work but I'm about to fall asleep at the computer!

Take care all; wishing you all a great week!

I scored 14 cans of "expired" delmonty peaches for free. I could have had more but didn't want to be selfish.

I split more wood, while thinking about my father. Good memories!

Hubby cut hay yesterday. There are pobably 400 square bales to bale. He can run the tractor, but his back is wrecked. I will have to load. But we will work alittle at a time so long as the rain holds off. Hubby retired from work as soon as he could draw his pension. Things were tight. But he got disabillity too after about a year. We always heard it was hard to get, but one x-ray and he was approved. He needed to use his cane to walk a few weeks ago but is better again. Now in Jan he will get Medicare. That will help a lot. It will drop our insurance bill andhis insurance from the work retiree plan will be the secondary. He and one year old grandson will have to drive the truck to move the hay.

The food bank we sometimes work at sent me a text that they had an unexpected 2 pallets of apples and come get some. I got enough to can some applesauce and apple pie filling. They are very good apples. The food bank only gives out food twice a month and could not keep them that long. They did send some to another food bank that would be able to give then out right away. The lady that runs it always shares the unexpected extras with the workers. That and a thank you is all the pay we get. And the satisfaction of doing Gods work. We have been building a walk-in freezer for them. It is going slow because Hubby can only do so much at a time.

Christmas this year is jellies, honey, a little canning, and baked goods. Kids will get a toy or movie. I have to go to the thrift store for cookie boxes.

Digger, I wish we were closer because I have had Christmas tins running out of my ears. I take a few at a time to the senior center and they gradually disappear.

I got a box of Granny Smith apples in mail today. I placed them in cold room.

I received a case of pork and beans and chicken soup.

Have made 6 jars of beautyberry jelly so far, and have about 3 jars worth left to make--once I can get the berries off of the stems and separate them from the leaves. This has been my first attemp at canning without anyone else's help, and I'm proud to say that I haven't screwed anything up yet.

I actually had an idea for something to stock up on; has anyone here tried stocking those squeeze packs of baby food? You can get organic fruits and vegetables for a relatively cheap price that way, and though they only last a year, I thought perhaps we could keep them rotated by putting the older ones in smoothies. I have a toddler, so I buy them anyway, and recently, I've been looking into organic food that I can store up, but it's all SO EXPENSIVE!! Then, it occurred to me while I was buying the baby's food: Why couldn't I stock these for us as well? They'd have to be stored properly of course, but why not? So, I've been buying extra to put back for us as well as the kidlet.

Mom and DD made it back home. I'm so glad they came to visit, but i"m also glad to back to my routine! Trying to freeze dry down tomatoes as quickly as I can - Don't know if it's the weather or what, but I feel like a squirrel that just found a ripe pecan tree! Hurrying to get done all I can, and still feeling like I"m behind. School is taking up a lot of my time - it is what it is. I should graduate in May.

Canned banana! Commercially canned Banana baby food is an option. I have not been able to find a safe recipe to home can banana. When over ripe they go cheep. Our kids used to freeze them. Haven't tried dehydrating them.

They dehydrate really well. Haven't tried canning... I suspect they are low acid. Freezing works, but they turn dark after a relatively short time. Commercially dehydrated ones kerp about forever... home dried should as well, but you'll need to use a citric acid dip or something for color retention.

I canned 3 pints of dragon / hot peppers. It seemed to go well. Thinking of doing salsa this weekend. It was actually fun.

It's been a busy week with the grandkids and work, but I managed to pick up a few on-sale stock up items during all the running back and forth - about a case and a half of soup, 4 beef roasts that I vac sealed and tossed in the freezer until I get time to can them, and a half dozen sweet potatoes that I hid in the outside basement stairwell in hopes of having them sprout in time to plant next spring. I also hit Dollar Tree and WM to pick up a total of 20 hats and 20 pair of gloves to give to younger grandson's teacher to hand out as needed; the cost was covered by the overtime I ended up getting stuck with - or, I guess was blessed with :) - a few evenings ago. That's about all I had the energy to do - I read about folks cutting and stacking cords of wood and feel like a total slacker

Busy week getting ready for winter. Temps are finally dipping below 32. I will be happy when the mud freezes for good. We cleaned this week. Used rug cleaning machine to deep clean the rug. It took several evenings doing it after children sleep. I disassembled all the drains and cleared them. I changed my oil.

October is my normal stock up month for winter. I let supplies run down in the summer because the house just gets too hot.
I did my normal online ordering and when I went to check out, I realized there was almost nothing in my cart. Walmart said they were out of Spam! They didn't have any of dh's juice, or the shoes I've been wearing for a couple years, and a couple other things. I went to the actual store and bought all the juice they had, but they had no Spam either.
Kept checking back and was finally able to order some Spam. It looked like Fed Ex ran over the box with the truck when it arrived. I had a one can busted open and leaking. I thought Spam would survive a nuclear war. Evidently not. They refunded my money.
Looks like this will be another year when we have no fall. We went from running the ac to hard frosts in less than a week.

It always feels good to get everything buttoned up for the season change, doesn't it, Ivan :)

Marseydoats, I swear I looked at the almanac a half dozen times last week to make sure Mercury hadn't gone retrograde - seemed like nothing was happening the way I thought it should

Yes it does. I feel best when I know I am staying on top of things, which is always challenging.

I don't know if I mentioned it but I had my year consumed by big problem. My health insurance coverage gave me grief, and denied bills totaling 20k. I was stunned and shocked for months. I was told everything is covered.....Yada .....Yada . Well it was not. I went through long process of appeal. It was not pretty. It is a forest out there... No real hope or help out there.
So it was a learning curve, but fortunately I met right people. I won.....did you hear .....I WON! But I realize my win has deep debt to the people that supported me.

A huge burden has been lifted off my shoulders. It was hanging there all year. I asked friends to pray for us. We prayed .

The end was so anticlimactic . I waited and waited. I called.....nothing. 5 weeks over due on process that took year. They said it is processing . I asked what does that mean? It in processing to be paid sir. We have 30 business days to pay starting the 12th Oct. The consistent theme of process is slowness. I figured they would drag it out full 6 week, but I called week later and they sent payment.

I still shocked and stunned.
