Oh no, December all ready. In the blink of an eye its another month already. Thanksgiving is almost a distant memory and so will Christmas soon be. then the dreaded 2023. All the hype about no food for Thanksgiving, but I'm not seeing any reports of most people that wanted a turkey didn't get one. Although I'm sure there are families that didn't get one, only I don't know any. There was plenty of food around here for Thanksgiving. There are still plenty of people with enough money.

Personally, I've stopped listening to and reading about all the doom and gloom. I'd say that 95% is just hype. One day, all this D&G will come together, but it will be on God's timetable, not from a video, man's guess, or tweet.

Whew - the weekend sure took a long time to get here, and it's going way too fast!

I got off work Saturday morning, made a flash stop at the Evil Empire on the way home, carried in the few groceries that I had to, and fell in bed. Woke up to a grandson calling in the early afternoon, so dragged myself out of bed to go pick one of them up to go the Evil Empire to pick up some kid pajamas and underwear - the hospital where I work does a pj and underwear drive for kids each year as part of a several county wide community holiday program - different businesses and organizations who volunteer are assigned a type of item that is needed, and - at least in our case - the employees donate that type of item. I usually take the two younger grandsons and a spare or two, but this year I am still dragging from the blasted cold, so just the middle grandson went with me. Turns out he had an ulterior motive - he wanted to get a Christmas present for a girl at school. Of course, I was charmed by the idea, so off we went. He said 'she's really kind of little and she talks about her cat a lot' when I asked what she might like. A soft plushy hoodie with cat designs, fancy cat treats and some cat toys ended up in the buggy. He did a very good job of picking out the pj's and underwear for my work program too - carefully explaining to his grandmother that "Guys my age (11) don't want superhero underwear", so I left the buggy in the boy's department with him and went back to the girl's department to pick out the stuff for the 2 girl's tickets I had.

After I dropped him off, I still had a little energy, so decided to get the rest of the persimmons I had gathered planted in the raised bed I had set aside for them. After that, I was done for, so crawled back in bed with my tablet to read for a b it .... and somehow managed to delete my password for this site :shr: . I've tried everything I can think of, so now I guess I'm going to have to change my password altogether, and I'm not sure I've got enough brain cells to get that done today

I got lucky when I stopped at the Evil Empire Saturday morning after I got off work - they had marked down about 20 large packages of boneless/skinless chicken thighs (what I feed the outside cats along with dry cat food) as they had a sell by date of that day; I picked up 6 packages at $5 and change each and threw them in the cooler with a bunch of ice. I brought in two packages when I got home yesterday and put them in the crock pot. I cook it to human standards, so it can be used for us or for the cats. Plan A was to can the other 4 packages but I couldn't talk Hubby in to carrying in rain water from the big tank in the shed and I'm still pretty wimpy from this blasted cold, so went to Plan B - I have 2 more packages in the crock pot cooking now; will put the other two in this afternoon. I'm chopping the meat as I take it out and putting it in freezer bags once it's cool enough to go in the freezer. I gave Hubby a pass on the not wanting to get water for the canner thing since he starts his new job at the hospital tomorrow.

Well, the cough and the exhausted feeling is hitting again, so I think I'm going to slug down some cold med and crawl back in bed for a couple of hours.

Take care all - hope you all have a great week!

We were going to to out to eat after church and him hawed around about it and could not make up my mind. The I decided I wanted to just come home and eat soup again. DH is having hot dogs, his choice, he's tired of the soup. Since I'm not eating after 4:00 I didn't want take out to tempt me. I'm doing fine about not eating after 4:00, I think my stomach must be shrinking some because I'm just not that hungry.

I started working on the laundry yesterday, and need to finish it today. Not that much to do though. All of m y compression stockings needed to be washed, not actually all but the ones I wear most of the time. The other ones are kind of tight, since I've gained weight so I don't wear them very often. I did have to wear a pair on Thanksgiving day and my boots have also gotten tight. I got a horrible cramp in my foot and forgot how salt will make it go away, one of my cousins reminded me that my ex told him about the salt. How could I have forgotten about that. Oh well.

Church was good, I really like the pastor. I remembered why we stopped going there are few years back and it was a totally stupid reason. Shame on me.

I've got so much to do and just can't seem to get it done.

Started the day to an upset son who woke early. If I'm correct, it's because he was having sleep problems. Especially since he's napping now.

Got the last of the thermal bottles out. Hitting friend up for 45 more two liters. That should cover the last of the stuff. I may recruit him to help me fill them and then get them on the garden cart. So that my spine doesn't get quite so pissed .

Laundry started and then out to the garage to cut the pieces for a Christmas gift for Mom, a canning mat. Everything cut. One line pinned down the center and the edges clipped together. I am being paranoid about this one, so it'll be repinned in between each row of stitching. And I did remember to cut a tester set so I can make sure the sewing machine is set up correctly before the full piece goes under the needle.

My cold is still hanging on too. I’m really leery about taking any meds between being diabetic and my blood pressure shooting up because of them. I gave in and took some Alka-Seltzer cold med last night to get some relief from all the sneezing, I used Vicks on my chest and feet. My chest is still congested today but I’m just using some sugar free Halls to help soothe my throat. I’m ready for this to go away.

Renee~I love your story about your grandson! And he’s right about “guys his age not wanting superhero underwear” LOL. My two grandsons are now 11 and 13 and I miss them being little so much. I hope you feel better soon.

I got the T-Day leftovers taken care of yesterday. I made a turkey pot pie which turned out really well along with some potato patties/cakes that were good too even though my taste buds aren’t what they should be. I put enough turkey to make another pot pie, soup or casserole in the freezer along with enough dressing for a meal for DH and I. The chickens got the leftover brussel sprouts.

Prep wise this week, I’m wanting to get some cleaning and organizing done in the pantry. I was going through a jar of opened baking chips, etc. and managed to spill some toffee bits that went under the shelving. I’ve got to move some things to get to it before I entice critters!

We have nothing planned for this week, except Cary going to the auto place to get a new battery for my car, tomorrow. He didn't want to fight the holiday and weekend crowds over the weekend. I do plan to visit Mom one day. Rain off and on. Just makes me want to stay home.

The Fastest Remedy For Muscle Cramps:

PICKLE JUICE !

Regular salt works. So do salted potato chips, gatorade, and other salty treats —

However —

Salt, gatorade, and regular salty treats take about an hour to rellieve the spasms.

PICKLE JUICE (and most other forms of vinegar) get into the blood stream and stabilize electrolytes in just a few minutes.

Nothing works faster.

I used to be a marathon runner (was right up until my wife’s cancer took a turn for the worse a couple of years ago.)

Muscle cramps in the legs or feet is a HUGE problem with people over age 50 who insist on running 26.2 mile races.

Actually, it is a huge peoblem with marathon runners of all ages.

Lots of runners get about 20 miles into the race, then they begin to cramp really bad. So bad that alot of them end up having to drop out of the race, if they have not prepared ahead of time for it.

You can actually buy 2 ounce bottles of pickle juice at stores that cater to athletes, for this very reason. When I was still running marathons, I would carry a fuel belt on my waist, which would hold a small bottle of water (refilled at every water station on the route), some energy gels, and two 2 ounce bottles of pickle juice.

Why two bottles?

One for me around mile 20, and one for another runner who is cramping really bad on the race route.

Pickle juice really will soothe muscle spasms in mere minutes, and keep somebody from having to drop out of the race.

But actually, just drinking about 2 ounces of vinegar out of a regular jar of dill pickles will work just as well, Nomifile.

I would think pickled beet juice would work just as well, and probably the juice in a bottle of pickled olives, as it is the vinegar that is the active ingredient balancing the electrolytes.

I have some vacant garden bed space, so I decided to plant it with Cherry Red Radish seeds, and see what happens.

It might be too late to put out radishes, but radish seeds are cheap, so what do I have to loose by planting some? Anyway, I planted some this morning.

They are supposedly big enough for harvest in around 22 to 28 days.

The chickens will like the green tops, and I figure I will take the underground red tubers, clean them, then boil them in water that has chicken boullion in it.

I have read that you can make a sort of low carb mashed “potato” out of boiled, mashed radishes.

They also fry up like french fries or dropped in a roast to replace potatoes

Aviax - I’m on day 9 of whatever this is. It’s better for sure. I never ran a fever just started with a headache and then lots of congestion. Generic mucinex and ibuprofen kept it manageable.
I hope you feel better soon.

Paid bills today and set my budget for first half of the month. Prep wise is mainly finishing up Christmas (does that count as a prep?). I have some routine medical stuff coming this week so am counting that as health preps.

Pulled some carrots today and they were sweet! Gonna let them grow a little more. Brocolli plants all have small heads. I was concerned that the cold temps may have bitten them. Continue to clean out my husband's family's old home place but I have slowed my roll and am only giving it a set number of hours per week. The amount of stuff there is just not believable! My BIL who still lives there will have surgery on Thursday. His prognosis is not good and we are trying to make his end of life a bit more comfortable. Some days my attitude stinks. On those days I take a little more down time to find that place of peace!
Everyone have a great week!

Refilled the empty space left by the turkey...with another turkey. Seems they (Rouse's) put them on sale for $0.25/lb. Wish more freezer space had been available. Picked up some zinc tablets as well, because we may need them sometime. Not the chewables...not much zinc and way overpriced. Tomorrow is "run the genset" day...then top the tanks back up. At least gas is under $3 this time around.

I replaced our turkey with another turkey as well that I got for .29 cents a pound. Hubby just shook his head at me. I bought that 16 pound turkey for less than a pack of lunch meat. He can keep shaking his head because he is the first to comment about how much I save us my buying on sale and putting it away.

I went to my dr for a checkup last Wednesday. He just wanted to check my thyroid numbers. I had not had any medication for it since I saw him 3 months ago. My numbers had dropped back into the high normal range without any prescription medication. I am feeling pretty good most days.

Yesterday was nice outside. I cleaned most of the clutter off the porch and out of the car port. I still have a little bit to finish up today and sweep the leaves off the porch. The leaves are an ongoing thing this time of year. I also worked in the garden the last couple of weeks getting it ready to mulch.

Thanksgiving was nice. The kids all came and my sister came. She never married or had kids. She is 5 years older than me and a bit of an odd duck. But I am sure I am a little odd myself.

Our little 5 month old grandchild tried the sweet potatoes and regular mashed potatoes Thanksgiving. She thought they were yummy. She is just beginning on foods. Being a premie she is a little behind other 5 month olds but doing great. She is such a delight. Our daughter had sudden pre-eclampsia that quickly developed into HELP syndrome. She is still suffering some issues related to that. She still has fluid retention and high blood pressure. Today she sees the heart dr to make sure her heart is pumping effectively. But she is feeling better slowly. Hopefully she just needs more time. The last 2 weeks I can tell she has more energy and feels better.

I am trying to finish getting a few gifts for Christmas. I want to get that done soon. I am trying to decide where to put the Christmas tree. Having a pack and play for the baby takes up part of our room. We also have more furniture since cleaning out my inlaws house after last Christmas. Then add in the preps and the house is a bit full. I still need to cull some more. I have some items to donate now. If the store is taking donations tomorrow, I will take them in.

I started getting the warning signs last night. That drainage, swollen, itchy throat warning. So I grabbed the elderberry drops and took them. Backed it off pretty quickly. Woke this morning with a bit of a sinus headache, and clogged ear on the opposite side. Grabbed the elderberry tea bags. I have syrup made but it's all with sugar. I just haven't managed to wiggle in the time to make a batch with stevia & monkfruit. But if the tea and drops aren't enough, I'll have to instapot a batch for me tonight.

Part of it is, I think, that we've all been cautious for a few years. And now, except for medical facilities, people are no longer being cautious. And people are getting back into a more public rhythm again.
And if I'm understanding some of what I'm seeing in various places, employers are back to demanding that you come into work unless you are dying and have a doctor's excuse. And I know that I'm seeing ads that are dumping the blame for getting sick completely on the person who gets sick. (You didn't get the flu shot, so you have the flu. It's your fault you are sick and not able to work.)
I'm actually likely to start taking more precautions now because of that. But, so far, it's just colds. Simple cold virus. I actually had to look up the contrast in symptoms between cold and flu because it's been so long.

I used Mucinex back at the end of last year when I was sick and it made my blood pressure shoot up, as in stroke high. I had taken as directed but I had also taken it for 2 or 3 days so that probably made a difference too. But I’ll have to look into something else if the chest congestion doesn’t clear up soon. It’s not too horrible and I hope to keep it that way.

For me, colds have always taken a few days to take hold. Flu has always hit me hard and fast. As in feel great, then all of sudden not so great, then freezing and aching, etc. within an hour.

I wonder if its the guaifenesin (its what's in mucinex) is what is making my BP be higher. It looks like I'm going to have to cut back on it and do something alternative. I used to take Eyebright for congestion and I think I took it so often that it quit helping. Last year my dear brother suggested my taking it again. I bought some, but it just didn't sit well in my stomach. gonna have to give it a try again with something other than coffee. I've become too dependent on the guaifenesin.

No cold or flu here at our house. I pray it stays that way. We're being careful about being out and about, but no mask wearing.

What is ailing me is my right shoulder and knee. I can't lift my right arm over my head, without being in a lot of pain. It's the rotator thingie. My knee is back to where I need a cane to walk. I never heard back from my rheumatologist about the x-rays he took. His office is very good about calling if there's something I need to know about, but no call if things are ok. Plus, in spite of drinking herbal teas and other measures, I can't keep my BP down. 150/108 last night. I see my new internist the 7th of Dec., so hopefully he'll get to the bottom of it.

Cary just got home from getting the new battery for my car. He also bought a portable jump starter for vehicles. He already had a battery charger, but it wasn't strong enough for the car.

I received my first pair of shoes from Keen's this morning. Perfect fit. I've got 3 more pair coming, along with Cary's 2 pair. Probably will get those next week. I don't know why they all weren't shipped together.

Pineapple juice! Preferably fresh or frozen.

Interesting, though... I've never heard of plain guaifenesin causing HBP...

Traditional Medicinals used to make a tea called HerbaTussin that worked great. They discontinued the tea for some reason. I always used it for chest congestion or anything in the chest, it always worked. You could look it up and see the herbal ingredients and make it yourself. It has licorice root so some might not be able to use that.
I rarely get sick so I don't usually need anything for congestion, but on the rare occasion that I do, I use lungwort, horehound, licorice and cherry bark. If a fever is involved willow bark can be added if it is not a problem for you.

Here is the ingredient list for HerbaTussin:
Eucalyptus Leaf 210mg [[PhEur]**], Licorice Root 175mg [[PhEur]**], Slippery Elm Bark 175mg (Organic) [[USP]**], Cherry Bark 175mg (Organic, wild cherry) [[BHP]**], Elecampane Rhizome 140mg, Marshmallow Root 35mg (Organic) [[PhEur]**], A Proprietary Blend 840mg (Organic) [Spearmint Leaf, West Indian Lemongrass leaf, Lemon Peel, Stevia Leaf, Lemon Myrtle Leaf (Backhousia citriodora)]

My knockoff (cheap) iphone type smart watch has quit charging. I thought it might be the watch but the charger has quit attaching. I can hold it on the charger for a few seconds and it charges some. I have a back up of the same watch but I took the charger out and used it by my chair and now I can't find it. Thank God for ebay, I just ordered three more chargers. And last week I ordered another back up watch. The original and the second one cost $55, but this last one I ordered was $19.

I love this watch, I always wanted the iphone watch, but it was just too expensive and I found this one on amazon and jumped on it. It does everything I want and sincs with an app on my cell phone to change the time twice a year. Although with an emp it won't work any longer.
