Good Morning, All! Hope you are all doing well today!

It's a chilly, rainy morning here; temps have moderated some from the forecast, and the snow has been taken out of the forecast but the cold temp of 26*F for tonight remains in. I'm just glad I finished harvesting my sweet potatoes yesterday and the day before, and got them tucked away in the outside basement stairwell. I got a surprise while I was harvesting them - one bed also had a small batch of Irish potatoes in it - I got a half gallon bucket of those to go along with the sweet taters. I'm going to take some of the smaller sweet potatoes and pot them up in flower pots to see if I can them to grow and provide me with leaves to harvest for winter greens. If nothing else, they'll put out some oxygen in the atmosphere while the house is all buttoned up for the winter.

The grandsons and I did finally find pajamas for the pajama drive at work - I was starting to think I'd need to go buy some more fleece blankets and a pattern and stitch them up! With the stress level at work right now, I just didn't think I had patience enough to do a good job on them, so was really glad to find them on the racks. I had picked up some of the small, lightweight fleece blankets for just in case; and will stitch them around three sides to make 'snuggle sacks' for the grandsons. I'll use a large enough stitch that they can easily be taken apart if the need arises for pajamas, boot liners, whatever...

After this week, I've got extra shifts scheduled every week through December and in to January - if I don't get fired for no vax before then. I'll try to sock the $$ away for unexpected expenses.

I managed to get all the potato and gravy mixes I bought last week organized yesterday and put away. Theres still things sitting on the pantry floor and on the kitchen counters, especially some of my more recent canning that need to be put away.

The next few weeks are going to be more busy than normal for me and it just makes me feel even more behind. DH asked me the other night if he had done something to upset me because I was being very quiet, he hadn’t. It’s sometimes hard to express your worries because you don’t want to give them more to worry about. With everything going on in the world, some health issues I’m trying to figure out, depression is rearing it’s ugly head but I’m trying to stay focused.

Renee-So glad you were able to find p.j.’s! And that your sweet potatoes made, ours didn‘t make from the damage the deer did.

My anxiety and depression issues have more or less resolved themselves, so I'm thankful for that. It's just been a very trying time with not enough space in between situations to completely get over one thing, before something else happens. It's been a hard year.

Our small group got together, today, and we all made plans for our Thanksgiving meal. Everyone knows what they're to bring, so that issue is out of the way. I didn't get stuck with most of the cooking this time. I think we got it all divided out pretty evenly among us. Now, if we can all find what we need at the grocery stores to prepare everything with, we'll be all set!

Tuesday, is the day I've planned to do my grocery shopping. I'm going into big town to do it. I think my chances of finding everything will be greater in big town than in the smaller town I usually shop. More options of grocery stores, plus, I need to go to Sam's. I want to give Aldi's another shot, too. DS and DDIL have talked me into going back for another try. I only went there once right after they first opened, and it was nasty. They tell me that it has changed a lot since then. They go every week, and get some great deals. With all the shortages and price increases, I'm just going to have to be more flexible with my shopping habits than what I've been willing to be.

Cary is doing great. His BP is still in good shape without taking med's. He's about to get all of his energy and stamina back to where it was, before he got sick. I've made a few changes in our diet, and added some new supplements for both of us. All as a means of better kidney and bladder support. Now, to feed him good so that he can regain all the weight that he's lost.

Glad to hear folks are recovering from their various maladies! There's enough going on without the added concern over family.

Garden isn't done yet...tomatos and bell peppers keep putting on. Broccoli and spinach have been replanted for the fall garden. Asparagus looks like it'll be ready this next spring.
Got both freezers filled. New generator just got an oil change.

...and those things that are overlooked? Printer ink and more paper. I'm certain there is more, just have to discover what it is and that it is still available.

Aldo has butter for $1.99... limit 6. I bought 6# of salted and 6# of unsalted... no problem. We're not milking a cow this year, so I'm not making butter. I'm expecting butter to go sky high, so want to stock up for the winter... hubby agrees that we *will* milk our 1/4 Jersey 3/4 Dexter when she calves.

We just finished canning 44 pints of applesauce. So good! We didn't add any sugar- Ida Reds and Empires... they were so sweet they didn't need anything else.

Our weather is turning... the men spent the day putting machinery away, insulating the well house and just buttoning things up for winter. The cellar is full, the woodpile is massive and the haymow is full. We've got a couple dozen large round bales being delivered next week, and we should be set for the winter...

Next week, I've been promised they are going to get my sewing room set up. Can't wait...

We are getting ready to be gone over Thanksgiving week, so there are lots of little things that need to be done around the house. No shopping planned. I do plan to do a little bit of reorganizing by taking some things out to the garage and settling them in permanently out there.

My old one tray dehydrator is plugging along and I have been dehydrating frozen corn like crazy. When I get done with that, I have about ten bags of mixed veggies to work on. Then I will move on to green beans and then peas/carrots. The price of frozen veggies are crazy! I've been getting mine at Aldi for 79 cents a bag. Most other grocery stores are twice that or more for the same amount.

Summer, butter is one of the things to get on my shopping list, Tuesday. That's a good price at Aldi's. I'm going to put our chest cooler in the car in case I have several different stops to make at different places, before we head back home. Aldi's is one of those stops. I've lost track of how many lbs. of butter I have in my 2 freezers. I always buy one to replace one when I need to. I use a lot of butter. Nothing tastes quite like homemade butter. I remember watching my grandmother make it while growing up on the farm. It's the only kind my grandpa would eat.

I now have electric to the greenhouse, we're trying to decide how to heat it. Right now we have a heat lamp but I may not need it for tonight.
For the first time ever my dh asked me if we had enough lol, I told him maybe. ;)
Sorted my collection of seeds and I put in an order on Tuesday, they will be here on tomorrow.
I wanted some Kale and rapini to grow in the greenhouse. I've moved a few things in and they are doing well.
Take care everyone!

We are slowly buttoning down for the winter. Cut all the sugar cane Saturday and pulled turnips. Got our elderly family member moved to town into an apartment which means she is only 2 minutes from us and I can keep a closer eye on her! Cabbage, broccolli, collards, and cauliflower all in the ground now. Seed for next year sorted and looking for some stuff we want to try this year. We are trying to plant some things that will store a little better over winter. Sure glad I dehydrated tomatoes as we are really enjoying them!

There are a bunch if saplings trying to overtake my blueberry bed, and I managed to get 2 of them cut down. It will probably take me the rest of the week to get them cut up for kindling. I fill a cereal box with the smallest twigs, I don't believe in wasting anything. It's sad how physically hard this is. I hate being old.
Got the laundry almost caught up. Need to put the last load away before the kitten drags it across the floor.
Still trying to organize my books. It makes my back hurt so badly I can't do it for very long. Again, the old thing.
I decided that I am going to learn to use my phone for photos and videos if it takes me a year. Husband threw out my instruction book,, and I don't know exactly what kind of phone I have. It's a couple years old. While trying to take a photo of the gelding yesterday, I shot a hilarious cartoon video of him. The aspect ratio was all wrong and I don't have a clue how I did it. Got some really good footage of mine and the puppy's shadow and me cussing. It was fun, whether it was productive or not.
Hope everyone has a good week!

Got a library nearby? They have all kinds of books on photography and videos. Take your phone and they should be able to tell you about it. if they don't then you can do an interlibrary loan or go to web site of what ever brand you have to find the instructions. They are usually kept on the company's web site. Also once you get the brand name check out You Tube.

While in nursing school I took care of an elderly woman who had rheumatoid arthritis. She and her husband lived on a huge farm and had many head of cattle which resulted in there always being fresh milk and cream. It was there that I learned how to make butter and all about buttermilk! Her father fought in the Civil War. Isn't that amazing? Well anyhow I learned so much about gardening and using the produce. Walking into their little cottage was like walking into the past!

My grandparents had a huge farm with lots of cattle, too (lots of other farm animals, chickens, hogs, turkeys, horses). Grandma always had her little milk cow. First thing every morning, she would put on her rubber boots, grab her milk pail, and off to the barn she would go. My parents built their home on my grandparent's land, so I was always with my grandparents. We all shared in the farm work. I wish I had paid more attention to my grandmother's butter making. I have no clue how it's done, but we don't have a milk cow. All I remember is that she let the milk sit for awhile, until the cream came to the top. She would scoop that off, but that's it. I draw a complete blank from there. I do remember her putting it in little plastic tubs for the freezer.

If I remember correctly the milk kept in the house was put in a gallon glass jug that had a smaller glass area that the cream collected in. The milk that was kept in the cooler in the barn was put in a separator I think! I do remember that Corbitt kept his sipping whiskey there!

So I ran to the closest WM today. Groceries were slim everything pulled to the front of the shelves. Prices up. I noted that the shower gel gift sets like old spice etc were very limited. Most of them were pulled to the front of the shelf with only 3 or 4 per brand.

Hubby was remembering the days of yore this afternoon. He made the statement that they rarely went to the grocery store and that they just grew everything they needed or wanted. His dad loved hominy so they just grew it and made it. Must have really loved hominy! That led to a discussion of what we needed to add to our little piece of heaven. Not enough hours! Not near enough hours! But did make a seed order today and it looks like we will enlarge our sugar cane plot. :p

My dad loved hominy, too. On the farm, we grew corn, and dad and GP's made their own. IIRC, they cooked it outside in a large cast iron pot over the fire. I can't stand the stuff.....

We got word yesterday morning that big town was so crowded. We decided to only go to small town, instead. Neither one of us felt like dealing with the crowd, especially at Sam's. I had to make a stop in at the cleaners to pick up some dry cleaning in small town, anyway. No crowds anywhere there.

I just bought my bi-monthly stash of groceries. The only prep items I bought were a few cans of mixed veggies and a couple of cans of evaporated milk. I did manage to find a frozen pecan pie, so I bought that to have for Thanksgiving. DDIL is making a gluten free pumpkin pie, and her mom is making a Dutch apple pie. 3 pies will be enough. I loaded up on cool whip for each pie.

I went to Walmart, and they must have just restocked the shelves, because the last I heard from my mom was, the shelves were almost empty throughout the store. What a difference a few days makes! The only item I saw in short supply was TP. I bought the last pack of Charmin they had (Use a pack, buy a pack to replace). Only a few packs of another brand were left. Walmart had Wright's bacon for $10.99/1.5 lb pk. I backed away from it, cause I had plenty in the freezers already. That may be the lowest price for awhile, though. 1lb chubs of ground beef were $3.47.

Since I didn't get to Sam's, I ordered from them online this morning. Only a few items for the pantry. I'm not in any hurry to get them, so if it takes awhile, it'll be ok. DS and DDIL will be going to Aldi's this weekend, and I'm going to have them pick up a few items for me there.

We have a commodity run this next Monday and will go to walmart then. DH has just about used up part of my jello stash, making it every day for the last 10 days, so he is going to buy more. My other stash I can't find but I know its somewhere, probably not a bad idea to not look for it. He needs to learn about prepping. Although I guess being sick, real sick, is a good reason to over use a product.

I'm not buying much, I'm only using cash from now on. But I do want to replace the cans of chicken broth I drank while I was sick. we've used a couple of pounds of butter and I need to replace that. Not much on the list.

We just canned 13 quarts of chopped peppers for next year's salsa. We currently have stored about 2 years of salsa and 1 year's worth of ingredients.

Also, the wife saved some seeds from a pepper plant she liked. Well after all was said and done, it apparently crossed bred with another plant. The peppers look exactly the same as the parent plant, but are 3 times the size of the original version. We don't know how they taste yet, but we know in a month or so when they turn red....

Because of the price increases, I've had to cut back on buying, too, Judy. By the time I buy my regular supply of groceries for 2 weeks, there's not much left in my budget to buy extra for storage. I'm able to buy to replace what I use, and not much else. I've already had to readjust my budget, once, and I can't afford to do it again. As long as I can buy a little bit extra to add from time to time, I'll be happy.

You probably have enough to hold ya'll for longer than most. I feel like we are pretty much at that level too. so I'm good with replacing what we use.

My DH has decided to help me with my storage problem. Problem is I don't at all like where he is putting things. Eve since I got my she shed he's wanted to organize it his way, but he did not help pay for it and I've been able to resist him on it. But right now I can still hardly do much so I feel like I have no choice but to let him put things (cases of food) where he wants to. My preference would be to put the food around the area that gets the coolest from the a/c. At least he listened to me about the lard he rendered and put it where it will get the best benefit from the air conditioner.

If I ever get back to where I can do things I can rearrange some things and maybe he won't notice. My biggest issue is shortness of breath and vertigo.

I'm glad your DH is willing to help. A lot of hubbys won't do that. Cary and I compromise as to how we do things when we can't agree on something. For the most part, he lets me take care of all the food storage and arrangement. I let him take care of everything else. But yeah, you can go back and rearrange when you feel up to it.

I dug out my last case of quart jars for my dehydrated veggie storage. I will have to look for more. I use pints 99% of the time, so don't have many quarts. I mainly use them to store dry goods.

Those veggies dehydrate down to nothing! I got 5+ 12 oz bags of corn into 1 quart jar. Mixed veggies take up even less room. Went back to Aldi's and they only had a few mixed veggies bags left (lots of corn). Some green beans, but no peas and carrots. I have plenty to work on before vacation then will check after that. I think I have set my goal at 3 cases of quart jars of dried veggies. My oxy absorbers came in today, so I am good there.

Judy, the last time dh re-organized the pantry while I was at work, we couldn't find anything for 6 months. The bag of electric fence gate handles that he put away never did re-surface. I think he took them out to his black hole shop.
He put the 2 cycle oil in with the fruit. Every time I put it back with the other oil and hydraulic fluid, he puts it back.

I kinda feel sorry for those whose spouse is not on board, but I will pray that they come around to being more actively supportive :)

Anyhoo...the replacement glass stovetop (that was lost in shipment) came in. Just got done transfering all of the elements and correcting the "professional" mistakes that were made when an element was replaced a month or two back...*sigh* if you want a job done right...

Getting more of the LTS foods set up on the shelves. Only about 15 cases to go, so almost there...

Still waiting on roof estimates to come in. I really hope they aren't bat crap crazy with their prices. I can do it myself, but it is a matter of "how much is my time worth." Along the lines of replacing the main breaker box...saving a couple thousand $$$$ was worth it, since it didn't take that long.

Judy, are you following up with your doctor in this? Checking your blood oxygen levels at home? This can be normal, but it could be anything from a secondary bacterial pneumonia to a strained or inflamed heart. Please don't ignore it! And ask about pulmonary rehab... they should be able to teach you simple exercises to do at home.

Continuing to pray for you Judy!

I am done with most of my Christmas shopping. It’s not really a prep, but I’m thankful it’s done. Im ready to put up my trees, but am trying to wait just a few more days. Lol

I will be buying last minute Thanksgiving fixings this weekend. Not much is needed as I have gotten most of it together.
Work let us know this week that each employee is being given a turkey if we’d like it. That was a fun surprise which I’m grateful for!

We got the rough cut lumber unloaded into the barn. It is nice to have it. We then had to loan the truck it was on to our daughter. Apparently, newer vehicles have wiring that has a plant based coating instead of plastic. Pack rats or rat got under both their vehicles and chewed the wiring. They have bait out now and moth balls. Hopefully that eliminates that demon rodent. But the repair shop acted like it was a common thing.

We went to Walmart after dropping the truck at our daughter's. This is probably only the second time in there this year. There were several holes on the shelves, but there was still plenty. They had done a store reset. The isles were wider and rearranged. There were brands that I had never seen too. One thing hubby noticed was no peanut oil in any size. We did add a few cans to the pantry. We also got a spiral sliced ham.

Yesterday we went to the pecan farm and bought some shelled pecans. We also stopped at the local owned slaughterhouse. They sell to the public. We bought some bacon and pork chops. Their prices were up just slightly but about the same as the grocery store now. Some items were less and the quality looks wonderful.

I did a little more Christmas shopping. I still have a few people to get for but have no idea what to get.

Yesterday we found out that a friend hubby worked with went to bed and died in his sleep. His wife was worried about covid and I am sure they were vaccinated. He was doing great the last time I saw and talked to his wife. The friends that told us of his passing said it was unexpected. The wife always thought she would go first.

Our son got another deer off our place. One less to eat my garden next year.

I did dig up my 3 Italian peppers and one tomato. They are in my office in 5 gallon buckets. So far, so good. They haven't lost any leaves yet. Some of my flowers don't look as good since bringing them in.

I haven't decorated the house, or bought any Christmas presents, since our boys left home on their own. We give money or gift cards to everyone in our small family, since we have no little ones. Nope, no grandchildren. I have no place for extra decorations, unless I moved out a lot of things. Finding a place to store the everyday items just to make room for decorations is non existant. It became too much of a stresser, so I just stopped. A nice centerpiece for the dining table is all I do.

Cary broke his watch, and to get it fixed was going to cost almost the price of a new one. He picked out a new one, and ordered it, with my blessing, for his Christmas present from me. It should be delivered, today. A nice automatic Bulova from Jared. I still haven't made my mind up as to what I want, since Cary always asks.

We only followed up once with the clinic we went to. I am checking my blood oxygen levels several times during the day and its finally good all the time 94-97. The clinic gave me this gismo to help breathing and I'm using it. I'm planning on going to the VA to get checked out in a couple of weeks. As I'm sitting here at the computer I'm able to take full breaths.
