Beautiful day here with wall-to-wall sunshine and a balmy 35 degrees. It's actually not bad because there's no wind.

I shifted laundry to the dryer and started the dishwasher. I also made a meatloaf. When it's finished cooking, I will go for my walk and then the Sunday drive. Most of the outside work is finished. I'm cutting and poisoning little trash trees in the very back of my yard. It's hard on my back, so I do a few at a time.

The cold is coming back in a day or two.

Have a great day, everyone!

@Meemur, I have made up a meatloaf for our supper, tonight, too. I wanted to get that all mixed up and in the pan, before I sat down here at my pc. I usually do some of my cooking, mixing, and marinating in the early morning. That way, I don't have so much to do later in the evening when everything else has to be cooked.

We're still getting a few light rain showers off and on. High for today is 67. Our winter is coming back in full force after this week, unless our forecast changes. We all know how that goes.

Not much to do today. No home fellowship.

I talked to Mom about Lillie, yesterday. She had to go back to the children's hospital in Memphis, Tuesday. Her surgeon told them that she still needed to heal a bit more, so he has her scheduled for surgery to replace her ears, Tuesday, IIRC. He may have to do one ear at a time, though. It depends on how well the first one goes. We all know that this is going to be a long drawn out process with many surgeries ahead for her.

Beautiful morning. I was determined to get the onions in, and I did. 276 short day onions from Dixondale. The mixed bundle. That almost filled one raised bed.

My spine is now officially pissed at me. So half hour break. And then back out long enough to fill in the rest of the bed with saffron bulbs. This is a temporary home for them. Just to get them through winter. I fragged up and completely forgot about them in the fridge. So in spring they'll get moved.

Good morning. Broke my cardinal kitchen rule and went to bed with groc on counter and sink of dishes to do. Knocked it all out this am. Dishes done. Most of laundry done. Working at least 33 hours Mon to Wed. Off for Thanksgiving so 4 day weekend. Will be making sure my desk is in order before day is over.

Meat was on sale so I have several containers to split and put up this afternoon. Putting a pork roast in instapot. It will become BBQ sandwiches we can easily heat for my 30 min lunch break. Will make DH up some salads so he can have those anytime.

Thanksgiving is going to something easy. Grands are joining us. Thinking about just making a big breakfast. I do have a small ham that DH and I will have Sunday.

Happy Thanksgiving week to everyone.

I got the bundle from Hoss Tools and need to get them planted. I'm getting more and more things from them. One reason I went with them is they seperate their different varieties into their own bundles so you get the exact same amount of each type. They are some good looking starts and are going into one of my big raised beds.

We are still going to Mom's for Thanksgiving dinner. Turns out, Mom has the "crud", and the infection in her leg is back. She's pretty sick right now. I'm taking everything to cook over to her house. Her NP has her off of her leg, plus, she doesn't feel up to a lot of cooking. I'll be doing most of that. It will just be us three, so I'm not planning to cook a lot.

She has had this same infection in her leg since Spring. The stupid nurse practitioner that she keeps going to won't send her to a specialist. It just pisses me off that Mom won't stand up to him, and say, "Enough". He just keeps going back and forth on different antibiotics and come back in 2 weeks. It will get better, but it always comes back with a vengeance. I finally told her that if she didn't request an appointment with an infection specialist, after this latest round of antibiotics, I was coming to get her, and take her to the ER. I was tired of all the run around, plus, putting her life in possible danger. She knows that I mean it, too. She has a trip planned with her sister in Florence on the 5th of December for two weeks. She refuses to stay home. :gaah:

Finally have plans set for Thanksgiving - in-laws are coming out to the farm. SisIL is bringing chili, I am making cornbread and cinnamon rolls. I like it - simple. Picked an estate yesterday, but there really wasn't much. I'm set on cleaning products for quite a while, though. And just taking those saves me a bunch.

We did Thanksgiving yesterday. Makes it much easier on the married kids, grands and nieces and nephews who have lots of family to fit in on Thanksgiving. We just love being together doesn't matter if it isn't the actual holiday.
Has anyone here canned turkey gravy? I have canned many ,many things but, never gravy, How do you do it?
Thank you in advance for any helpful hints.

I wish DS and DDIL would be more flexible about when we have our holiday meals. I don't think it matters to DS, but DDIL and her mother won't budge. I'm glad it's just going to be us and Mom this year for Thanksgiving. She invited us, so that gave us a good excuse not to go to DDIL's sister's house this year. She has a pit bull, and what happened to Lillie is still too fresh on our minds. I won't go anywhere near her dog, again. Or any pit bull. Lillie just cries her eyes out, because she thinks she's ugly. I can only imagine what a nine year old little girl is thinking. Poor thing. She's almost inconsolable, and her parents still won't let her see herself. She's still all bandaged up. Her doctor thinks it's for the best right now.

Prayers are ongoing for her, SB.

Oh, Thanksgiving . . . I haven't gotten anything done for it.

At a minimum, I want to:

- Clean up the house (it's not horrid, but it needs some attention)
- Make sure I have at least two pairs of comfy sweat pants and shirts that are clean
- Pick out several movies to watch from my stash or hit the library if I don't have what I want
- Make a final decision about dinner and thaw meat (or whatever) -- go grocery shopping
- Make a list of potential activities I could do, based on what's happening around town (although I'll probably hang out in my living room, write Christmas cards and watch movies)

It just seems like T-Day is coming up so fast. I've been working on several online projects that eat up a lot of time. I can't believe it's Sunday evening already. It seems like minutes ago, I was planning Saturday's tasks. Wow.

Lovely day today. I walked to and from church, ate lunch, took a nap and finished a book. I did laundry late last night so that is done for now. I ate leftovers for lunch and supper and have plenty to get me through until Turkey Day. I think it will only be six of us to cook for, so I need to be careful not to cook too much.
The weeks, months, and years are going too quick. I can't believe it's almost Thanksgiving. They say as one gets older time seems to speed up, but our 20-something granddaughter made a similar comment out of the blue the other day. This year has flown by.
When I was 12, I was complaining about how slowly time was passing. My grandmother told me not to wish my life away because the older I got the faster it would go. She was so-o-o correct!!

Someone should explain to Lillie that she is not ugly, she is injured and the doctors will be working hard to help her recover from her injuries. It is the injuries that are ugly not her. Difficult for a 9-year-old to comprehend but repeated enough she will begin to understand.

Well I'm almost done with the cleaning! Got two smaller turkeys thawing in the fridge as the guys wanted it that way instead of one big one. They're smoking and deep frying them. I did not feel good yesterday so I did nothing but rest. Today though I'm back up and running lol. Plan is to deep clean my bath and bedroom and then play around in my sewing room.

Prayers for little Lillie!
One of my daughters had a bad infection when she was 18 months old, she was in the hospital for a week. She was traumatized and screaming cry at night. I got her a Dr Barbie and we use that plus a little small cheap children's doctor kit.
That helped tremendously.

Two daughters were here yesterday and helped finish off things that had to get done bless their hearts!
Well I have Thanksgiving here Thursday, we've divided all the cooking up so I won't have very much to do at all.
My sciatica is better it isn't screaming at me this morning, still hurts but not like it was. I'm resting a tremendous amount. Chiropractor today.
Son is doing the outside chores and I'm doing a little bit inside with his help a little bit. I do miss my bedroom upstairs but I'm sleeping downstairs for right now.
Weather has been wonderful. But we're looking at snow probably Wednesday just a trace to an inch they said?

Everyone around her tells her that. Even her surgeon told her when she left the hospital the first time that he was going to make her beautiful. Not just pretty, but beautiful. I think a lot of her feeling this way is, because she is still very traumatized from the ordeal. Her doctor did give her a script to help with anxiety. Imagine a child of 9yrs. old having both ears, whole nose and upper lip, plus a huge chunk missing from her neck ripped off by a dog. Pit bulls aren't a large sized breed, but even at 9yrs. old, she is a small sized little girl.

Wife wanted turkey breast roasts again this year. Got two to make sure we had enough.

Waiting for Walgreens pharmacy to open so I can try to light a fire under them. Between the doctor taking so long to renew the prescription and the pharmacy being so slow filling it I ran out of my sulfasalazine. Took my last one Saturday

My wife woke me up at four this morning and I couldn't get back to sleep. Got breakfast at Burger King and dessert at McDonald's. I hope to get a good nap in a little while.

Three medical appointments Wednesday so that will be a busy day.

I've been so swamped for the past several months that I haven't even checked in here. I've missed hearing from all of you, even though I don't usually contribute much. And so I hesitate to jump in when I don't know the background to some conversations, but here goes.
She has had this same infection in her leg since Spring. The stupid nurse practitioner that she keeps going to won't send her to a specialist. Of course, I don't know which antibiotics she is or has been on, or any other medications she is taking, and I'm not a doctor. This is just something you might want to check out. Australian researchers published their findings on how Tylenol and ibuprofen facilitate antibiotic resistance, especially in the elderly. Here's an excerpt from that blog post, full article at the link:

"Part of preparing the best we can involves continuing education, learning about new studies and advances that expand our understanding. For years, doctors have counseled us to use Tylenol and ibuprofen to relieve pain and reduce fevers. For more intense pain relief, they’ve suggested alternating doses between the two pain relievers or combining them. And if you don’t want to DIY that combination, it’s even already formulated for you and available OTC in most drugstores. So it was rather surprising to read an article from Australia indicating that these two common pain relievers are facilitating antibiotic resistance, and most especially when they are taken together or in alternating doses."

Pain Relievers and Antibiotic Resistance

Depending on what antibiotics she's on, there may be some herbs that can potentiate those antibiotics to overcome antibiotic resistance that she seems to be experiencing. There's a chart in Armageddon Pharmacy, pages 44-46.

I hope she gets to feeling better soon.

No, she doesn't use any pain medication at all. Once in a while, if she has a headache or severe pain, she will take ONE Tylenol. Not a full dose.

This particular Nurse Practitioner has had her on just about every antibiotic that one can take orally. I do believe that she needs IV antibiotics, or hospitalization. Something much stronger than what she has been taking. The NP has told her over and over that he didn't really know what was going on. He's just keeping her coming back and prescribing a different antibiotic, hoping that the latest one does the job. That's why I told her she was going to the ER if this round didn't work. But, she wants to wait about seeing a specialist, until she gets back from her trip. I've recommended several things she could try, but if it doesn't come from the NP, she won't do/take it. Mom has a "doctors are god - like" complex.

I really do believe that this little county clinic where Mom goes is in it to make money. I have a few relatives, my sister being one, that lost their lives by continuing to see the doctors and NPs at this clinic, because they just kept having them come back and come back without any true results, until it cost them their lives. They would never refer any of them to a specialist, until it was too late. I honestly believe that they didn't want to lose any of them as patients, once they went to a specialist.

You might want to remind her of Cary's sepsis, and how fast it can come on, and how close he came to dying. Also, she needs a new NP.

Ours is just the opposite... they want to refer you to a specialist for *everything *. And the specialists seem to be in it only to prescribe drugs... even if they have to make you sicker first, so the insurance company will agree to pay for the "newest and most expensive " crap (complete with Black Box warnings)

We told hubby's rheumatologist to shove it the last visit...won't be going back. I figure its going to take me two or three years to get him back to the excellent health he enjoyed before we started seeing them.

Is the infection internal or a sore on her leg..

There are some new infections that I have been reading about ...that have a fungal component... and antibiotics will not work against them...they are also resistant to the rx antifungal meds.
They might/could respond to an antimicrobial...????

I've never tried it...canning gravy is frowned upon by those who adhere strictly to the FDA guidelines. It would depend on how thick the gravy is. I occasionally do a little rebel canning but wouldn't even consider it if it's thicker than soup or stew. I usually have good luck freezing it though.

Lastly, I'd check YouTube videos to see what the general consensus is over there. How about using it as the base for a nice turkey or chicken stew/soup or better yet, a pot of dumplings.

I can chicken (or turkey) stew in gravy. Gravy, when hot, isn't nearly as dense as many other things considered safe to can.

If I was canning it by itself, I would hot pack (important!) it in pints or half pints, and can for 35 minutes for pints, 30 minutes for half pints at 10# pressure (15# above 2,000 feet altitude)

I'm very pleased with my NP and the one prior to her was great too. Both are thorough and do not hesitate to refer you for tests and/or to specialists. Doctors are so thin here that they want patients "fixed" and done so they can see the next dozen waiting for them.

Several years ago, my late d-i-l had staph infection in the incision from a back surgery. The surgeon saw her and told her it was not infected, but the NP insisted it was. The NP spent a good bit of time on the phone and finally the surgeon agreed to admit her to the hospital. When released from the hospital she was referred to the wound center, the doctor there was excellent, told her exactly what she needed to do and eventually got the infection cleared. Just for your information, no other doctor would see her because her "doctor" was the surgeon and the surgeon was being a jerk. The NP went way beyond her required service to get this surgeon to admit d-i-l, and she would certainly not have survived without being admitted.

I would freeze not can gravy. Not recommended so why take the risk.

I got my 7.34-pound turkey breast out of the deep freeze to start thawing in the fridge. I often do that in the garage however the low temp today is forecast as 44º and it's currently 50º and rainy. At least it's just a turkey breast not a whole turkey which would be difficult to fit into my fridge without getting rid of the leftovers currently on the next few days' menu.

I ran to the post office this a.m. to mail my absentee ballot and a couple bills. Then back out to the library after it opened this afternoon. I need to go to the bank tomorrow and then errands should be finished for the week. I went to get gas last week and all the gas pumps had out-of-order on them. I'm assuming they were out of gas as the diesel was not marked out-of-order. I'll wait until next week to get gas as I have two appointments so have to be out anyway.

Her infection is internal. No sore, scratch, or scrape at all. Just blood red, swelling, and pain just above her ankle. The redness has gone up to as far as her knee, but the NP just gave her another antibiotic to try. He did send her to have a CT scan and an x-ray, but nothing showed up. That was back, before it got so bad, though.

Back home from my doctor visit. All was good, even my inflammation markers were low this time. He was very pleased. I don't have to go back for 6 months, unless I have a major flare up. I have him on "speed dial", so if I do have a major one, all I have to do is call his office, and speak to his nurse. He has an excellent nurse practitioner in his office that I see if I have to go in on short notice. I've seen her many times, and love her. So, all NP's aren't like the one that Mom sees. The other doctors and NP's at that certain clinic are just as bad. I don't care for any of them there. I've had personal experience with 2 of them.

Ufff... it's not even 0900 on a Monday morning, and I'm already peopled out.

I can relate! This afternoon at work I was awash in both sick people coughing on everyone and others with vague but endless complaints. I finally ordered two large pizzas (buy one, get one) and set them up in the break room. That stopped about 95% of the nonsense. I'll be glad when I retire.

I have been slowly cleaning and organizing different spaces. I ordered my first set of clear, sturdy, plastic bins for the bathroom. I love them. Then, when a bulk batch went to deep discount, I ordered more. Those took care of the med/first aid cabinet and a couple of other spots. Another batch helped get the top of the fridge cleaned up.

I have another batch to tackle the upper kitchen cabinets. But last week the drawer organizers went on deep sale. Today I used them to clear out and organize my two most used drawers. Yeah, I'm in love. Neat. Full height. Can hold all but one of my longest knives. Everything that the cheap drawer dividers are not. And I am so thrilled to have drawers that are organized again, instead of the mess that smaller organizers couldn't handle.

But I do have to decide on keeping/tossing a few things. I already tossed a lot. These are the maybe items.

Certa Bonum Certamen
Kyrsyan, it's a great feeling to have your home organized the right way, isn't it?! One of my favorite things to do as far as housework/home-keeping is getting everything squared away just the way I need it to be. For me, it usually takes living in a place for a year before I can be satisfied, everything needs to be handy, and especially in the kitchen, make the workflow the best it can be and it takes time to figure some of that out. It makes everything so much easier, whether it's daily living stuff (cooking, getting ready in the morning, working in a workroom, etc.) or keeping the home picked up and tidy. Big fan of organizers, too, whether they're specifically made for organizing or custom jerry-rigged.

Just yesterday we unearthed five boxes of my art stuff, packed up since May of 2023 waiting on the move that didn't take place until spring of 2024 (really long story). There were five banker boxes packed full of my favorite watercolors, inks, pastels, brushes, pens, etc., and despite searching high and low for over a year none of us could locate those particular boxes despite them being clearly marked what they contained. We'd long since located the many boxes of good watercolor and drawing paper, along with the lesser-grade stuff. These are my most beloved materials (and the most costly, many things I couldn't and wouldn't replace due to cost these days). They were carefully packed first, and were the boxes the movers took on the first load to our new place. There were things that we had packed that also went on the first load that were things we thought we probably wanted/needed to keep, but would have no immediate use for.

My granddaughter was rooting around in a few of those heavier, "don't need right away" boxes late yesterday looking for something, and moved several of the boxes around, and lo and behold, there they were! My art boxes had gotten buried underneath those non-urgent boxes. She came running into the house shouting, "Grammie, Grammie! I've found your good art stuff!." She was almost as thrilled as I was because she knew how frustrated and at a complete loss I'd been as to where they could be. So I spent almost all night going through everything, making room for my goodies amongst the 2nd tier stuff, organizing everything "just so". I was, and am, a happy gal today! :)

Today I got the turkey and extra drumsticks out of the freezer and into the fridge to thaw and also made the orange-cranberry sauce for Thursday. Started a pot of one of my DH's favorite meals, ham and lima beans, and played around with my "stuff". Granddaughter made a double batch of pumpkin bread and thoroughly cleaned the kitchen afterwards. Had a brief episode of moderate rain, we're under a tornado watch for another half hour, but it looks like we're in the clear.
