Bacon update..a few weeks ago..we were in Amish country in Intercourse, PA....we were shocked to see regular bacon. ..for...$12.00 a pound...nothing special..

At that time here in Central Virginia we were paying about $6.00 and cheaper on sale....then it jumped to about $8.00 a pound... yesterday we were at Giant Food just a bit west of Fredericksburg, Virginia...and bacon was $12.00 per pound..and not even great bacon.. I'm sure I can find it cheaper here.and there....but the increases are unreal...

Land of Lakes butter was nearly $7.50 per pound... didn't notice the price on Irish butter...

Get what you need now for tomorrow it will be more..!!!!!!!!

MARANTHA!! Even so, come LORD JESUS!!!
ioujc - I need to learn more about fermentation. I'm hoping to get some carrot kraut and turnip kraut started before my next go-round.

Saw oncology today - looks like it will be both radiation and chemo this time. Follow up with chemo doc tomorrow (radiation doc was today), then surgeon on Friday. 120 mile trip for chemo doc, 210 for surgeon - and snow is forecasted. Yay. Looks like I will be quite busy with a lot of things from this point on. I will probably still be on, just not as much.
Praying with all here. We LOVE you MOLDY!!! Praying that JESUS covers you with HIS golden healing balm and places HIS hand on you. I PRAY you feel HIS presence!!!!
In JESUS' precious holy name!!!

Making a trip to town today to finish off our list of remodel/repair items. Everything is crazy expensive but available. One of our prehistoric propane heating stoves went out. Valve with on/off died. One company has it on backorder but it will be at least $500 IF it ever arrives. Wish I had some to sell! Have a similar backup version of stove. Gonna test it today. This is supposed to be our warmest day for awhile.

Continuing prayers for you, moldy.

Cary got a great report, yesterday, from his doctor. All is well with him. While he was seeing his doctor, he told him about my BP being so high almost all the time, now. So, Doc made me an appointment to see him in December. He will be my PCP from now on, too. My BP being so high is the main reason I've had to ignore a few members and whole threads. I just can't handle a lot of stressors. My anxiety level has been through the roof, too. I don't want to start taking anti-anxiety meds again if I can help it. So, I hope that no one thinks I'm just being mean by doing so. It may come down to me just having to get away from the forum for a few days at a time so my mind can rest a bit.

I got my shopping done at Sam's. I didn't need much. We went on to our wine shop to restock our cabinet. Gosh, the prices! They already had out their egg nog, so Cary bought 2 gallons of that, along with our wine. Cary like his dark beer, but we still get that at Walmart.

By the time we got all of that done, we were about starved. We went to our favorite Mexican place for supper, before returning home.

Today, we're going to small town to do the rest of my grocery shopping. I'm in no hurry to get out this morning. It was 27 last night, so I'm giving it plenty of time to warm up a bit, before venturing out. Today's high......45 degrees.

SB, 2 cups of Hibiscus tea can lower your BP up to 20 points. Hibiscus is in all the 'Zinger' teas made by Celestial Seasonings. They also have a lovely 'Tension Tamer' tea that would be good for anxiety.

I looked at getting some hibiscus tea a while back at Walmart. It didn't say anything about lowering one's BP, so I didn't get it. I'll get more, today, and try it. BP is running in the 150's/upper 90's. I still would like to be checked out by a doctor to possibly find out what is causing it to be so high. I know it's not too much salt, because I use very little. I do think stress and anxiety are the main culprits. Some of it could be hereditary from my dad.

The two bags of dog food I ordered from walmart was delayed so that means it will never get here. I cancelled the order and was able to get one bag on a walmart pick up tomorrow. And I may go back and add a second bag as there were two in the cancelled order. Just want to make sure we have enough dog food for a good while. Lucky is a wonderful dog and she is lucky and so are we, she was a throw away.

This is my first walmart shopping in almost a month. One thing I ordered was pork gravy, I've never been good at making gravy with flour or making a roue. I always used arrowroot starch to make gravy and raising my family it was devoured.

My ss check came 5 days early, this is the third month in a row that has happened, I like getting it earlier in the month.

DH said there was a frost this morning. Sitting here at my desk having a nice hot cup of buttered coffee, along with some DE stirred in. My first cup had collegen and coconut oil. They are both fine but I think I like the butter best because I can taste the delicious butter.

In my walmart order I ordered three different kinds of butter, looking for a substitute for the walmart brand. I use butter frequently so taste matters. I'm trying the Tilamook brand, I really like that brand of cheese. Its only $1 more than the walmart butter. And another one is Plugra and Falfurrias. The Falfurrias is just about the same price as wm. I also ordered dried butter beans, large and small, after that small amount in a can. I do have the beans in storage, but they are stored. I need to force myself to can some.

Two 6 packs of 6 oz cans of pineapple juice, it really does get rid of phlim in my throat. Extra coffee, one large can of wm brand that comes in a can, although it has the soft inside top and a smaller can of French Market coffee and chicory, I mix the two together. I have folgers coffee stored but the containers are plastic and I want to protect from mice.

I was going to pick up my order later this afternoon, but I changed it to tomorrow because we got invited to a fish dinner, can't turn that down, good food and good friends.

Our chickens are laying good right now, they did all last winter, we had eggs when other people were not getting enough to speak of. I'll take our friends an 18 pack this afternoon, their chickens are not laying. I don't know what the difference is except that we have a closed in chicken house and they have chicken pens.

DH finally brought in some decent fire wood, he had built a lean to in the front of the barn to put some extra wood (and not very good wood) and it has a tarp for a top, so the wood is partially wet which makes it even harder to burn. We have plenty of other wood, but he wanted to empty that lean to so he could tear it down.

I'm making a big batch of taco soup to can. When I finish with that, I'm making a big batch of chicken noodle soup to can, minus the noodles. I'll add those when I open a jar to cook. Busy, busy, busy. Have I mentioned how much I love my digital canner? LOL.

I finished all my shopping, yesterday, for the rest of the month.

I've been wanting to make a big pot of vegetable beef (venison) soup, but keep putting it off. DH likes chicken and noodles, but the noodles get too soft if there are any left overs.

The only soup Cary really likes is chicken noodle and taco. I'm canning it in quart jars, so when I open one, 1 meal is all we'll get out of it. No leftovers. He doesn't even like beef stew. He got the flu one year and ate some while he was sick. It made him so sick at his stomach that he never has wanted any since. He'll eat homemade chili as long as it's really thick and I fix rice to pour it over.

DH will eat the meat and vegetable soup with a gusto, and I have a brand of canned beef stew that he will eat, looks nasty to me. I have a good recipe for potato soup that I've not fixed for him but I need to give it a try. Only problem is if he doesn't like it then I will have to eat all of it. Same brand of chili as the stew he likes. Thing is that me making chili he probably would not like because he doesn't like anything spicy, and actually neither does his stomach.

Falfurrias i believe is from Texas originated on King Ranch. It and HEB brand are my preferred choices.

My dear brother was very impressed with HEB. When he was in the army the job he had led him to get a tour of the inner workings of HEB, and like I said he was impressed. They do a lot of their own thing, not completely relying on out side goods. Wish there was an HEB near me, but I don't think there are any in Louisiana.

Done driving for the week. Just for appointments, I drive just a little less than 500 miles. Need to get a bunch done before Thanksgiving, and even more before I start radiation around 12/12.

We are so lucky to have HEB. Other large cities have Super HEB thst puts Walmart and Target to shame. I love their San Antonia blend coffee it has cinnamon in it. They have their brand breakfast sausage thst is very mild and 2.47 for a 1 lb tube. Mix with hamburger it cuts cost if you need 2 lbs in a recipe..

We're lucky to just have an Aldi's. I thought we would never get one, but other than Walmart, Food Giant, and Kroger, that's it for us. There are a few other grocery stores in the area, but I won't shop those. They are over run by GTR.

At least there is a Super One to off set walmart. There use to be another lower priced store that I can't remember the name of and was bought out buy piggly wiggly. That lower priced store had the best prices on canned vegetables and I bought cases of them from there. piggly wiggly is not like what I remember it was. High prices on every thing. I went in there once and haven't been back.

I just remembered it was Sav a Lot. For a long time I turned my nose up at it but fortunately for my pantry I got over that. I wasn't exactly a food snob in that I was so loyal to certain brands, it was the ingredients in things stopped me from buying popular things. I still look at ingredients, but I've softened my view to some extent. Although there are certain things that I will never buy and not sure I would eat, maybe as a last resort, things I won't mention again, that I have before out of respect.

I like to go to Krogers when I'm in Shreveport but haven't in awhile. I do like their store brands on some things that the name brands are so much more expensive.

I was talking with Judy in another thread about why my grocery bill is always so high. I feel more comfortable discussing it further here.

We shop only twice a month when we get paid. Cary and I get paid twice a month. (SS and retirement funds) The first of the month shopping trip isn't as high as the second trip when we get paid again. Our second set of income checks are larger than the first ones. Some things I only buy once a month on the second shopping trip. That's the one that averages $420-$500. One of the items I only buy once a month is my OTC eye drops that are over $80 for a month's supply, sometimes more if I'm having a flare up with my eyes. I have to have special dry mouth lozenges that aren't cheap, either, for a month's supply. We also spend more on our doggie treats than most do. He's special and our baby. We have no grandchildren, so we don't mind spending a bit extra on him. There are also things for the house that need replacing from time to time. I get what I can at Walmart. I cook for two weeks out of my pantry, only, so it takes a good bit to replace those items every 2 weeks. So, since I make Walmart my only trip for everything, it does add up, especially with all the insane prices across the board. Because of the insane prices, we're spending double what we once spent, and the prices are only going to go higher. I'm glad I'm just replacing food in my pantry now, instead of trying to start from scratch stocking it.

You are so sweet Sherree (I'm not sure I spelled your name correctly). I hope you didn't think I was being critical. And you have other expenses that I don't have. My electric bill makes up for it though.

I got my pick up order. DH stayed at the pick up place and I went around in the store for things he wanted but it was too late to add to the pick up order. When I went to the truck with his stuff and some more of mine, he told me there was only one bag of dog food, so I went back in the store. come to find out several of the things on my order were out of stock by the time they gathered my order.

I got another bag of dog food, nearly killed me getting it in the basket. Plus a different yogurt. and a couple of other things.

One thing I really wanted was Kitchen Bouquet. wm was out of it again and the same for the Texas butter. So I went to Super One and they had the things wm was out of but of course more expensive. Each thing was at least a dollar more expensive than wm. Something that wm has been out of for over a year has been Gordon's fish stick, SO had them. Three things and it was $44. They are better than any of the other brands. Fish sticks and french fries are an easy meal. The rotisserie chicken at Super One was a good bit cheaper than wm, I got one at SO. I did get a whole cut up fried chicken at walmart.

I bought a fuzzy baseball style hat at wm, I needed something to keep my head warm. The choice of warm hats was pitiful.

Another thought I have from my grocery shopping today. I tried to pick up a 24 pack of soda and could not pick it up with one hand. I had to slide if off the bottom shelf and pretty much do the same to get it on the bottom of the cart. And I could hardly pick up the 12 packs. I wanted more than was in the front and had to get help sliding it from the back of the low rack to the front. The nice man put them in the cart for me.

and then there was the 2nd 46# bag of dog food that I didn't get in the pick up. Just trying to get it on the edge of the basket I needed help to hold the basket still. The lady that I asked to steady the basket helped me get it on the basket. She was little and looked fraigle. I try to get the large bags of dog food either in home delivery (fedx) or pick up because my strength has give way to pain. I had forgotten to take a pain pill before I went to the store.

Its not so much strength but pain the gets to me. I told my DH that I should not be going to town by myself because I'd be a target.

Yep. You spelled it correctly, but it's pronounced Sherry. LOL!

No, I did not think you were being critical. Not at all. I have a lot of extra expenses that does cause our bill to go up. After I mentioned the eye drops, I figured it up for myself. It's over $90 for a month's supply which I buy once a month when we get paid our larger checks. I can't see good without those drops, and I can't talk without the throat lozenges which I buy at the same time. I keep one in my mouth round the clock, even overnight. I didn't want to talk about this openly, so it might have seemed like I was cutting you off. I just feel better talking about certain things here in the "prep" thread among you gals and guys.

I was in Wal-Mart this morning and thought I needed extra chicken stock in a box for Thanksgiving, until I saw the price. Nearly $4 for the big box. Ok, I will go ahead and make extra this weekend out of chicken parts. Nope. Ridiculous pricing.

Went to Food Lion and got a 13.44 pound turkey for $3.90. Of course I had to spend an additional $35. And yes, that was 29 cents a pound.

Gonna be making a couple more trips before the price goes back up. Gotta keep the All American busy. Wouldn't want her to get lazy!!

Not at all did I think you were cutting me off. And I know you have more than a month's supply of your daily needed things. The price of things these days is terrible, but a blessing that we can still afford them. I'm blessed that I get my as needed prescription needs from the VA.

Ran into some old (and older) friends at the grocery store Wednesday
. I was complaining about the price of pecans (for holiday baking) and she said, "I get lots from the food bank, I'll give you some." Mind you, they are $16/lb at safeway. I said "I'll trade." You can't find eggs anywhere here for any price, so I'm trading a couple dozen eggs for pecans! so excited!

Went to go see them this evening. I took them 3 dozen eggs. They gave me: 6 lbs of spaghetti noodles, 4 lbs of dried cherries, 60 oz of dried cranberries, 1 lb dried plums, 1 lb raisins, 6 lbs walnuts, 12 oz black walnuts, 4 lbs almonds, 2 lbs pistachios, and 2 lbs pecans. All vacuum sealed. Yes, I will be dropping by Christmas treats!

Lots of traveling in my near future (trips to surgeon and oncology). My insurance company offers a travel reimbursement benefit if you have to travel more than 40 miles from home (all my trips are 60-100 miles each way). I apply for every single trip. If I had known about this during my first cancer bout, I would have gotten about $1200 back.

Love that bartering Moldy! cleaned and re organized freezers today. Getting ready for venison. Cabbages are heading nicely and parsnips seem to be growing slowly. Haven't grown parsnips before. Picked lettuce, beet greens and kale today for the first time. Broccoli beginning to head. Nothing yet on Brussel sprouts or cauliflower. And it is cold here today for us anyway. Hit 50 as the high. 25 this morning. Been tied up with other chores and have missed being in the garden! Thanksgiving cacti are blooming right on cue!

Moldy, we get things like that in commodities too. Last few months we've gotten about 4#s of walnuts, they are in the freezer until I can get them vacuum sealed. I was neglegent about raisins and lost some, but not all.

etdeb, our precious dog was a throwaway, poor thing she refuses to come in the house and just shivers, I just invited her in the other day and she would not come near the front door. I see where she dug a hole in the hay bale to stay warm. Besides the dry food she gets a lot of left overs and is happy to get them. I use to give her walmart dry bones but I don't think she's crazy about them, so I quit getting them.

Today is our Thanksgiving dinner at church. These baptist folks sure do feed ya.

This dang cold just keeps hanging on - today is day 9. I'm negative for covid and flu so I guess it's just a head cold and I've forgotten what they are like. I have to go back to work tonight so will take non-drowsy cold meds and see how I do - I'll be with the annoying team, so will go back to bed soon to catch a good nap before I leave for work at 5:30.

I haven't heard anything about Black Friday sales except online, so hopefully the stores won't be too crowded when I get off work tomorrow morning - all I want to get is cat food and chicken so maybe I can be in and out without too much human interaction. Maybe if I fake a cough the other humans will avoid me....

I'm way behind on outside chores but none of them are real "Have To" chores - if I don't gather the flower seed heads, I have some left from last year; and if I don't get the pole bean fences and tomato cages taken down before the ground freezes, they'll just be a little harder to get out of the ground. We're supposed to have temps in the 40's and low 50's plus rain off and on for the next week, but if I don't get over this darn cold I expect Hubby will not be happy with me if I don't have enough sense to not be out in the rain.

I did go outside for a while yesterday and took a short walk around the yard to get myself out in the fresh air; then this morning after I fed the outside cats I went out to the van and carried in all most of the non-perishable stuff from my last Rural King and Aldi runs that I didn't have energy enough to carry in the day I bought them - that was enough to wear me out again.

When I went outside yesterday, I discovered that co-worker Buddy brought out some more bags of shredded leaves while I was sick, so now I've got enough to mulch the raised strawberry bed and another flower bed, but I'll need to pull weeds out of them first, so that will probably take a while to get to as well.

Take care all; stay safe out there!!
