Prep Genrl WEEKLY PREP THREAD: NOV 13 THRU 20, 2022

Its cold here in East Texas! Goodmorning all we are at 26 degrees. My preps now are shifting to get it together. Can't move thru the house unobstructed. Had some older friends asking about stocking up on food. I suggested don't waste money on long term when they are late 60' and 70's. Save money.
Our Walmart had Hereford brand canned roast beef marked down, I did get 23 cans and that topped off my canned meat stocks. Also mentioned to that small group of friends.

Flu's and other aliments are slamming the county so I avoid.

Good morning, All! It was a cold 28 degrees this morning. A cold north wind will be blowing all day, so the wind chill will be a factor at 47 degrees for our high. Our house is toasty warm with a big pot of water heating on the wood heater. I heat a lot of our water this way in the winter. It does save money on our electric bill each month.

I'm feeling a bit better this morning, although I haven't been up stirring around too much, yet. As I was making the bed, I got so dizzy I almost fell in the floor. I stumbled, but I caught myself on the chest of drawers, before I fell completely. I did bang my arm pretty hard, though. My right ear hurt most of the night. A bit of pain this morning, with some kind of noise going on in my head/ear. I'm still treating with garlic oil, but I will try mixing peppermint oil with it for the next treatment.

We sure enjoyed all that fish from the fish fry last night. I don't get fried catfish too often, but when I do I "pig out"! Everything was so good, with homemade banana pudding for mine and Cary's dessert.

Home fellowship, today. It's always good to see all the gang. We talk about all things going on in the country and around the world in light of biblical prophecy, and we get into the Bible for our weekly Bible study. We're studying through the book of Jude right now.

Praying that everyone has a safe and blessed week ahead! :hugs:

What are your older friends saving their money for? Their funerals?
I have reached the point where, if I want something, and I can afford it, I buy it. I worked hard and did without all my life. No sense in doing it now when I don't know how much longer I will be around.
That said, my Grandmother was fully functional and lived alone until she was over 100. She did have multiple people checking on her thru out the day, and my uncle took her car keys away from her when she was in her 80's. She was just a terrible driver and didn't need to be out on the roads. When she went in assisted living, the great grands, all just starting out, were really glad to get the contents of her freezer and pantry.

Mom is 83, and she still stocks food away, with 2 full large chest freezers, too. She still drives, loves working in all her flower gardens, and still goes on trips as if she is still 60 years old. Some days, she does better than I do.

Thank You, etdeb; for starting the thread this week - I sat down at the computer and saw that Pac had put up new chapters on her story and forgot everything else for a bit!

22*F outside this morning; I reckon it didn't get above freezing yesterday as the snow that fell Friday night is still on the ground. It's a bit patchy in the yard from where the grandsons and grand-dog were playing, but the field across the road is still pretty well covered other than a couple of deer trails.

I'm not much in the mood to do anything that I absolutely don't have to do outside today, so will try to focus on some inside work instead. I'm just glad that I managed to finish raking a path clear of walnuts to the propane tank day before yesterday so that walking to the tank isn't a hazard for the delivery guys - we're at 70% still in the tank, so unless it gets really cold, we're good for a bit. We contract and pre-pay for 1,000 gallons each year during the summer, but rarely use the full amount. Earlier in the month, I'd picked up over 4000 walnuts (40 buckets; yes, I counted them as I put them in the bucket lol!), and the grandson and Hubby had picked up some as well, but there are still so many out there. I do believe that the Lord sends us what we need, so now I'm wondering what the winter will bring. We may be eating a lot of squirrel in that case, as the trees are full of the blasted things.

Work is becoming a pain; co-worker wise, not patient wise. I've got 3 - 12 hours shifts in a row to work again this week, starting Monday, so I will be pretty quiet here most of the week. I've got 5 days in a row off after those three, so will grit my teeth and deal. Or put in a transfer request. Or have that darn knee replacement that the ortho keeps telling me I need... Pathetic, I know

Off to fold laundry...

Take care all; have a great week and stay safe out there!

Slow start to this thread. Things I would normally put here sometimes I put in other threads and I didn't even post here yesterday.

The cold front is here, I need to get the green onion tops cut before they are kaput. I use to put green onions in everything and now, even though I have some that are wonderful, I forget. First the green onions and then the mind.

Today is my deceased brother's 65th birthday. It seems so odd not to be calling him to wish him happy birthday. I know his daughter and step daughter will have a hard time dealing with it. So happy birthday in heaven little brother. He was eleven years younger than I am.

Not much prepping going on, I guess I must be content with what we have. A thing or two rears its ugly head from time to that that we need, like tires for Dh's tractor, he needs it for so many things he does. He's picking up two new ones today, they had to be ordered.

Church was nice yesterday, they always honor the veterans, gave us some nice big cups this year.

When we went to lunch after church yesterday I noticed how high the gas was, diesel in particular. I guess they are going to starve us to death with the high fuel prices.

I guess I'm making up for not posting yesterday.

Our 40# commodity boxes came early this month. Very sparse. No vegetables, no meat of any kind, but we did get peanut butter, six cans of disgusting vegetarian vegetable soup. I do hang on to those cans of soup just in case. A couple of months we did not get potato flakes but they are back along with the dried milk. We use to get two boxes of shelf stable milk but I guess we are lucky to get one box. I only use that for cooking and getting this kind of milk its been a long time since I've used any of the powdered milk. I'm still stacking it though. We get nasty cheese like velvetta, which I give that away. We have several boxes of it in the fridg out in DH's work shop. We did get grits.

Don't get me wrong, I'm very greatful for what we do get and this box gets delivered right to our front porch. The nice man that picks them up drops ours off.

Next Monday we go to town to pick up the USDA commodities.

Most of the time I'm walking normally, not much limping from my knee. What a blessing.

Its that time of year and our billy goats (two of them) are totally disgusting and so are the girls. Maybe we'll get some babies in the spring, hopefully more girls. We lost two of our best nannies to theft.

DM, my aunt, and I visited an antique mall the other day, and I managed to find some nice antique wood-working equipment for a steal! I got a hand-crank drill--and quite a number of bits to go with it--a nice wood plane, and a good large-toothed saw. After that post by one of our members about hand tools, I was keeping my eyes peeled. Most of the time, the antique/vintage stuff is NOT cheap though. I was very fortunate to run into these. So excited!

My winter garden is growing really well, too. I've never grown spinach or salad greens before, so this should be interesting. Broccoli, curly kale, dinosaur kale, spinach, various salad greens, and swiss chard are what's in my boxes. We actually don't eat any of it--except for the broccoli, that's for us :D--but the rest of it is to help combat the feed costs for the winter. (I ended up not being able to order my new meat birds until later in the year than I wanted, so they're growing up right now--when nothing else is growing, unfortunately. Next season, I'll be sure to breed them myself, and do it earlier in the year. I got myself a new incubator this year, so hopefully, I'll be able to easily do that.)

I hope to get a deer this year as well--soon, hopefully--but have never hunted before, so this should prove interesting. I figured that, if I can get a deer--hopefully two--it should save on grocery costs.

This morning, my ear is so much better. No pain or dizziness. Garlic oil really works, guys and gals!

It's going to be a busy week for us. I'm cooking out a big batch of ground beef, today, plus, cleaning house.

Tomorrow is canning day, and a good day to do laundry.

Wednesday, Cary has an appointment to see his Internist (PCP) for a regular 4 month check-up. Then, on to Sam's. I've decided to keep the pralines. Once you suck all the sweetness off, they are easy to eat. Like sucking on a "tootsie pop". Hard on the outside, but soft in the middle, LOL. If Cary feels up to it, I'll stop in at Home Goods, too. Once the holiday crowds begin, we stop shopping in Big town, so we'll wait and see what the crowd/no crowd looks like.

Thursday, grocery shopping day, plus any other shopping we may decide to do. Wine cabinet is getting a bit low, so will need to refill that. A stop in at Tractor Supply. Small town, only.

A little warmer today. High of 54 with sunny skies.

Well I wouldn't be surprised if I show up on America's Funniest Videos. Elderly lady trying to figure out how to use the hi-tech washing machine at the laundromat. The puppy threw up on my new comforter, and then I find out it won't fit in my washer. I haven't been in a laundromat in 40 years or more.
Really nice, clean place, but they have no change machine. I'd already lugged the comforter and my detergent inside. Hauled it back out to the truck and begged some quarters from the gas station. Lugged all my stuff back in, and couldn't figure out the washer. Finally found the detergent dispenser on top of the machine. Put my money in, selected hot water and what all else I wanted, and the washer still wouldn't start. Evidently a large load is $5.50. It would have been nice if they told you that to begin with. I finally got the washer to start, I guess I just didn't get quite as long a normal wash cycle would be.
Sat down once I got it going and happened to glance up, and they had signs on the ceiling, but none of them were washing machines for dummies. It looks like I got it pretty clean and it's in my dryer now.

Well, now I KNOW the weather man (weather people) :prfl:
ALL LIE!!!!

Said it was going down to the lower 20's last night, so I put 3/4 full bottles of water out at 10 PM so they would FREEZE over night, and could be used in the cooler.

At 6 AM this morning....before daylight, they were NOT FROZEN AT ALL. Looked at the hourly overnight temps, which were all below 27 degrees, from about midnight on......now HOW could it be THAT COLD and nothing froze????

They LIE!!!

THAT IS the definition of meteorologist you know:

It was 27 here last night, too, for our low. The water in the bird bath froze solid, but the water in a stainless steel bowl for our dog outside didn't. It's funny, sometimes, how that works.

We took a short trip last week then came home to work on more organizing and decluttering.
Began moving some preps into our office/craft room to get it out of the breakfast room.
Did a small Walmart order. Just some things we needed and some we didn't.
We leave on Friday to go to a family gathering for our 50th anniversary, we married right out of high school. Both of us had job skills from vo-tech and knew how to take care of ourselves. According to our reunion newsletter 40+ couples are celebrating their 50th anniversaries as well. The family rented a big house and we'll celebrate Thanksgiving together as well.
I'm planting carrots, kale, bok choy and swiss chard in the greenhouse this week. We are expecting a dusting of snow tonight so I'll wait til tomorrow to finish up.
We are hosting Christmas this year so this is as good a time as ever to get the house fully decluttered!
Stay warm and safe everyone. Prayers for all!

After all the hurt feelings on my part from the past two years when it came to our Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, we all got that sorted out, yesterday. No hurt feelings, so everyone is happy with the plans we made. It seems all the plans just fell into place, of which I was so thankful. I really didn't want any hard feelings in our group to develop, but I was going to stand my ground that I wasn't going to cook the whole meal.

Since we are getting 30 degree and maybe lower at night I asked DH to cut the tops off the green onions where he cut them a couple of months ago. I think I got more tops this time than I did then. I didn't want to lose them to freezing weather.

We've had some drizzling weather today and its predicted to rain later. Makes me lazier.

I've had to switch from knee shorts to long pants (jeans) and the long sleeved flannel shirt that I have on is more than 15 years old, I'm so glad I hung onto it and the green one too. I just could not bring myself to part with these two shirts when I lost 40 pounds some years back, unfortunately I've put it all back on..

I think about some of the older folks that don't post anymore, wondering if they are still breathing. Old as Dirt and Terrwyn in particular. Terrywyn's husband was in pretty bad shape and she was struggling, I hope they are okay. I think some one said Old as Dirt was in assisted living.

IIRC, Terrywyn left on her own after a "dust up" with Dennis. I've been concerned about Wanderlore, so I checked her last few posts. Seems she left for the same reason as Terrywyn, maybe.

I just finished going down the "main" page putting several people who grate on my nerves on "ignore". Made me feel lots better and calms me down when I don't have to see those threads anymore. Sometimes, "ignore" is our friend.

Wanderlore had serious health problems herself, as well as a sick, disagreeable husband, that's why I'm worried about her. There was someone who posted regularly on this thread who was friends with her in real life, but I can't remember who it was. I have so many people on "ignore" now myself that sometimes I feel like I only read half the posts.

I've had a quiet couple of days - took the boys home Sunday afternoon, caught up on laundry, then took a nap. Hubby went in to work at the bike shop this morning; he's not said when he starts his new job at the hospital where I work, but it should be within a couple of weeks. I'm glad that he finally figured out that he needed to step up to the plate to be the major breadwinner since I am having issues with my memory and the chances are that I will have to stop working at some point in time, at least as an RN. No one can seem to find a cause, which irritates me. No UTI, brain CT clear, I've checked all my meds and supplements and none seem to cause memory loss... My medical MD said it could be stress/anxiety related; so he put me on an as needed low dose anxiety med - we'll see what happens. It's possible, I guess. We have one big nurses' station at work; when I work with the loud crew, I've been taking a portable computer out in the hallway to chart as I can't focus with all their jabbering, I've only had to take a half of one of the meds at work a few times; none at home; guess that says where my stress is coming from  My best friend told me even if I lose my mind, she'll still pick me up and take me to the pool even if she has to help me get dressed and keep me from wandering off, so that is one good thing! I'm thinking I need to have my knee replacement(s) done before I resign, at least.....

I’ve just come to the conclusion constantly reading negative things is not something I’m interested in. If there is a threat grates on me I’ll just put the person who started the thread on ignore, it takes away the whole thread, made me feel so much better to make that thread saying trump should not run go away, and I like the person that started it.

I don’t have anyone on ignore (yet), but there are a few I’ve been tempted by. Lol I tend to skim a lot and focus on the threads without a lot of negative in them. It Is part of why I enjoy these weekly threads so much - no drama and simply good thoughts, good information, and people supporting each other.

I got paid today so will pay bills and work to set my second half of the budget for the month - it’s been six weeks with my ”new budget” and so far, so good. It is TIGHT (by design) and every dollar is allocated towards something. I have always been frugal by nature, but this has helped me to “dial it in” even more so.

Prep wise it is more of the same here. Using up some foods we have, replacing what we’ve used and meal planning to utilize what we have on hand and need to use.

I‘d really like to knock out more of Christmas for my kiddos, but haven’t gotten so far. I will stay away from shopping in “big town” after Thanksgiving as the traffic and people is simply too much.

Slow and steady -

Just when I get my budget lined out where I can make it from one SS payment to the next, I'm going to have to replace my computer. One of the hinges on the lid of the laptop has been acting up for a while--pain in the rear but manageable. Yesterday a piece of the case broke off around the hinge and in doing so also cracked the screen (touch screen so that no longer works). It is a Toshiba and I love it but the new ones are now from $600 to $1000--sure can't afford that. Also it has an 8.1 operating system--not sure my almost 82 year old brain is flexible enough to learn a newer operating system--some are not too user friendly. Guess we're about to find out because I use my computer a lot.

Judy my brother raises goats, he has people come from Dallas and Shreveport every year for young goats. He went out of town and 15 of his 30 young goats were missing. Stolen!
He breeds all nannies in Oct and all babies are born in March so 6 month old babies just what his customers want.

Hubby and son got his jobs with the trackhoe done. He had it rented for the weekend with 8 hours of run time. He put 10 hours on it. He did get the tree that was hung up across the road along the fence line down and out of the way. It was a widow maker type situation. They did some other clearing of pond banks and fence lines. Yesterday we went to settle up with the rental company after they picked up the trackhoe. Hubby had washed all the dirt and mud off it when he finished. The rental company did not bill us for the 2 hours over. They told hubby they would rather keep a good customer than collect for 2 hours. So that was a huge blessing. We always use them when we need equipment.

Since we were in town we did some errands. Mailed my invoices to get paid, deposited my last pay checks, picked up medicine, and went in Neighborhood Market. I only needed a couple of things. We always check for granddaughters formula. We had not seen powdered in at least 5 weeks, maybe longer. Yesterday they had some. It was the really big cans too. We bought the 5 cans allowed. She is doing so well and growing like a weed. She is just starting to eat a little food along with her formula. Her mom is feeling better too.

Our teenaged grandson got his first deer on our place Sunday. It was a nice spike buck. Their freezer is small, but will hold a couple more if they can get them.

It's still raining this morning, which is good. As I looked out our back door to see how much rain we got, there were 5 deer at our back fence grazing! 4 rather large does and 1 baby, but it didn't have any spots. We see them all the time here. As long as they stay on their side of the fence, and out of my turnip patch, I'm good. We don't eat venison, so Cary left them alone.

I've got a full load in my canner, and it's going right now. I've got to get the laundry started, plus, I have a load that needs folding to put away.

My "main" page looks rather nice this morning after using the ignore function to customize it for me, LOL. No war threads of any kind and no political or Trump threads. Also, the never ending threads that are used more as personal blogs than anything else. Works for me!

I was just rereading this thread, I must have missed SB where you said you were not cooking all the holiday meal this year, well good for you. Once my sons got married I never cooked another big holiday meal again. They weren't going to come to our house anyway, so we went to the in laws. Sometimes both sets. I either cooked something or gave them money. None of them talk to me anymore any way so what the hell. My moving almost 300 miles away stopped the holiday meals. The move was best for me, 12 years now living in the woods and with a great DH.

It rained for hours last night, not hard rain all the time though.

DH's tractor tire didn't come yesterday and he was upset about that. Hopefully it will come today, he depends on his tractor for many things. He can't put a log on his saw mill without the tractor to lift the log up and on to the track. He uses it to go hunting, although he can take the truck for that and did get a deer the other day with that.

We got 10#s of ground meat and 3#'s of steak from that little fellow.

Weebit popped into town Sunday. Requested pumpkin soup. So, I made it for her. Yesterday I canned the leftovers with the understanding she was leaving this afternoon and would pick the soup up b4 leaving. Got a text really early this morning saying she was having to go early and couldn't stop by to say Bye. So, now I have 8 quarts of pumpkin soup. The ex is an asshole, and she knows it.

Still processing all that stuff in between chores. I'm getting really jealous of ppl with an electric canner. I would can every day if I had one.

No one can seem to find a cause, which irritates me.
Do you take Benadryl? It is an anticholinergic. Maybe supplement with some acetyl choline? It might help either way. I also supplement with folic acid to combat brain farts.

I had a rude awakening yesterday when I asked DH the status of the dry dog food. I guess the last time I ordered a 50# bag was in April. He said we are down to on 60# vault almost full and some in the other one. So I guess 7 months isn't too bad to get that low. I ordered two 46# bags just now from walmart. They use to be $20 and now they are $32 with less in the bag. Gotta have it though.

About 4:30 this morning I heard my name called. I thought it was DH and I waited a few minutes and didn't hear it again so I got up to check on him. He was getting up and I asked him if he had called me and he said no. I heard my name called distinctly, maybe I was dreaming, but I don't think so. I've tried to go back to sleep but to no avail, I'm sleepy, but wide awake.

I had 2 really bad dreams last night, Judy. One, the group I was with, trying to survive, left me and two others stranded on a concrete beam running across a river, but the beam didn't go all the way to the other side. We were going to have to jump off the beam and swim to the other side. I couldn't swim, so I couldn't do it, so the group left me stranded. Second, we had intruders trying to break into our house. When me and Cary grabbed our weapons, Cary politely informed me that none of them worked, and the rest were locked in his gun safe of which I didn't know the combination, and he couldn't get to it. Anyhoo......

Off to Cary's doctor appt, today around lunchtime.

My Chewy Auto Ship was supposed to come today, and I checked, and they haven't even processed it yet. Very unusual. Puppy is going to be unhappy if she runs out of her goodies.
I spent 35 minutes on the phone with Hughes Net, trying to cancel my service. Had never had any dealings with them since installation. I figured it would be a battle to get it cancelled. They lied about my billing cycle, I took a screen shot of the bill before I even called, and they are making me pay for another month. The lady wanted to know who I was switching to and I wouldn't tell her --- none of their business. The new provider actually works though --- we did the 2 weeks free trial and I got to watch ALL of the last season of Doc Martin, and it usually takes me several days to watch the 2 you tube videos.

Got a really full day planned tomorrow, I hope I can get thru it.

I haven't had TV for about 30 years. I can't seem to sit still to watch it any more and I basically find it boring. I did have TV for 7 years when the "evils" lived here, but I just couldn't seem to watch it, except for maybe a movie every month or so. Not much on there that interests me and the cost is absurd for what I would use it for!!

I do have internet is my phone and watch You Tubes a LOT, but that is more for information and education than anything else.

I have certainly been lazy this past week. Not sleeping well at night so that really throws me off kilter!! I was so lazy today I fed my little goat out of a BOWL instead of a bottle!! I got lazy early in the week, and didn't get all of my water storage done before the cold weather, so when the bottles all got dirty, I didn't have enough water to wash dishes!!! LAZY!! LAZY!! LAZY!!

TOMORROW, when the temperature gets up a bit, I will hook up the water and get ALL of my water jugs filled! That's about 50 gallons and then 5 more ten gallon containers.

I did get all the animals fed and watered this afternoon, but that about ALL I have done today except mess around and cook a bunch of stuff from the freezer. Food to eat for the next few days and freezer meals, as well as brining some tomatoes and cabbage for sauerkraut that I made......slow day, but fun for the most part.

Well, gotta go for now.....my reading is calling me!!

ioujc - I need to learn more about fermentation. I'm hoping to get some carrot kraut and turnip kraut started before my next go-round.

Saw oncology today - looks like it will be both radiation and chemo this time. Follow up with chemo doc tomorrow (radiation doc was today), then surgeon on Friday. 120 mile trip for chemo doc, 210 for surgeon - and snow is forecasted. Yay. Looks like I will be quite busy with a lot of things from this point on. I will probably still be on, just not as much.
