Good afternoon, folks - I kept myself pretty busy this morning (daughter and the grandsons came out last evening) so just now got around to sitting down at the computer to read a bit, and then to start this thread.

I made the mistake of going out to the giant canning jar pile on the shed porch yesterday afternoon to see if I could guess how many more pint jars there were. Got tired of the mess so spent nearly three hours moving boxes, cleaning the area, and sorting the various sizes/types of jars into rows. I took a jumbled up mess of boxes that was about 16' long and up to 8' deep in a couple areas down to 10' long and no more than 4' deep; and each different type of jar now has it's own row - wide mouth quarts, regular quarts, wide mouth pints, half pints, jelly jars, jars for the beekeeper, and jars for the neighbor that does the farmer's market.

I was able to skip rows for regular mouth pints, 24 oz jars (freezer jars?), and half gallons as I carried all the pints the porch and placed them near the kitchen door - 47 jars in trays, plus two boxes with a total of 45 decorated jars (I haven't mustered up the patience to un-decorate them yet  ) Then I brought in the few half gallon and the dozen or so 24 oz jars and managed to get them ran through the dishwasher last night, so I didn't have to have a row for them.

It's so much easier to wash and box the jars when I do all of the same size/style before moving on to a different size/style. I used up every good sized empty box I had at home plus several that Hubby brought me home from work. I tried to use mostly big boxes, stacking a double thickness of cardboard between the layers of jars; and judiciously stacking the boxes as well - the jars had been in everything from drawers, trays, storage containers, dishpans, rotting boxes, etc..., so getting them all boxed neatly saved a lot of space!! My (very) rough count of jars was:
40 - jelly jars (half pints)
68 - wide mouth pints
455 - regular mouth quarts
227 - wide mouth quarts
70 - beekeeper jars (non-branded pint jars)
18 - neighbor farmer's market jars (things like spaghetti sauce jars)

I'd pulled the boxes out of the back seat of Hubby's truck while he went on inside to eat his lunch; he came back out a bit later to help me carry the 28 yucky boxes and the wooden drawers out to the burn pile; and we filled 2 bird feed bags with recyclable plastic containers as well. Then - as I was standing there, dusting off my hands and mentally congratulating myself on a job well done - Hubby turned to me and said "Did you bring out all those jars that are stacked in between the freezer and stove in the shed, and the ones in the shed attic too?" Way to burst my bubble there Sweetie Pie  I told him "No, I already ran out of boxes; maybe you can bring me some home from work on Tuesday and I can get started on those ones on Wednesday..."

I don't know how those of you who have extra jars store them, but as someone who has cleaned up a ton of jars from auctions, here is a request - please don't store them with ring bands on them, and if you don't have a solid lid for the box, please consider storing them upside down - an extra thickness of corrugated cardboard under them will protect them from chipping or breaking, and it makes them soooo much easier to clean up; not to mention not having to throw out jars that have dead mice in them... (yeah, glass is supposedly impermeable, but I have limits and dead mice = no use jar!)

Today was a pretty good day - I got two loads of pint jars ran through the dishwasher; just need to give them a quick hand washing, check for chips or hard water stains and get them boxed up for storage. The third load - part canning jars and part jars for the beekeeper - is still in the dishwasher; the grandsons and I had to take some time out of chores to play outside - water balloons, sprinkler, a physics lesson by way of how to keep your balance while standing in the wheelbarrow without tipping yourself out on to the ground (it's amazing how they can entertain themselves without their tablets lol!) We also made Jello based strawberry popsicles, filled birdfeeders, and put out some grape jelly for the orioles. Youngest grandson decided we needed fried chicken for lunch, so he and I ran in to town to the store and picked up a large box while daughter fixed some sides - home canned green beans, pasta salad, deviled eggs; she also quick chilled a jar of pickled beets and one of cinnamon applesauce. After lunch cleanup, the boys and I used a bag of frozen cinnamon rolls to prepare a pan of 'Monkey Bread' for snack later today; then I read for a bit and tried to get caught up on folding and putting away laundry while Hubby went to the shed to hang out with my cousins who are planting wildlife plots and the other three took naps. I just put the Monkey Bread in the oven and am trying to convince myself that I don't need a nap, especially since I have to get up early to go to work tomorrow...

Sounds like the crew is waking up - reckon I'd better go see what we are doing next!

Take care all - have a wonderful week!!

I wasn't nearly as productive this last week as I had planned to be. Things kept popping up that had to be taken care of, so I didn't get much done on the "to do" list. I have hopes for this week, so we will see.

I did get my meds refilled. Over the years, with changing insurance companies and the like and having to change pharmacies, I have been able to get ahead on my prescriptions. I have about 5 or 6 week out on the counter to take, had a 3 month supply in reserve, and just got a new 3 month supply. So, about 4 and a half months ahead of time when you figure the next refills arrive. Nothing is a "life saving" med, but it is nice to have a supply in case supply lines get slow or I get broke.

Keeping the cats in quality (not garbage) food is an ongoing financial challenge. The price of cat food has just soared. I had a $50 gift card to Petsmart and it bought about 3 weeks worth of wet food for the cats (2 small cans and one twin pack a day--two very elderly cats on special diets, and two younger ones on regular diets). It wasn't long ago that $50 was enough to cover the dog food AND the cat food, including the dry food and treats for both.

Plans for this week include some decluttering and trips to the dump, and putting a bunch of stuff up for sale on ebay.

Daughter sent me a text this morning stating older grandson had another growth spurt and only 2 pair of his shorts would fit, and asking me to check my storage tubs. I couldn't believe it, but I didn't have ANY size 7 shorts in my storage tubs!! I hopped in the van and made trip to town to Catholic Charities, Salvation Army, and Goodwill.... I shopped for both boys, spent $26, and had 20 pair of nice shorts (including 3 pair for the next growth spurt), 2 pair of running pants, 2 pair of sandals, and a colander :)

I need to go through my storage tubs soon and make a list of what is in them so we don't get caught short again...

So tired! Last weekend was very challenging at work. Monday - school, tuesday- dental appointment, scholarship interview, school. Wed- school, today work. I just am worn out mentally. You know it's pretty bad when you can't even think enough to make a list. The scholarship interview went well - I might not get the $$, but it seems the CEO is already working on where to put me as an herbalist when I graduate (or at least thinking about it).

Great news on the CEO wanting to integrate your newly acquired knowledge into your facility, Moldy! So nice when they have an open mind!

Prudentwatcher, I have kept on Hubby to refill his (2) meds as soon as possible over the past few years - we can only get a month at a time with insurance; and he was able to slowly build up a few extra months. Recently, on his own, he asked the doc to increase the dose so he could take 1/2 tablet/day instead of one, so he has been able to build up almost a year ahead. I don't worry too much about one of them, but the second one takes care of his pretty significant cardiac arrythmia, so I am happy to get ahead on it.

We've had a few recent cases of Tuberculosis at the hospital where I work; one of them was a person who'd been on my unit. Our facility stopped doing the annual TB tests several years ago - I have to wonder if they will be making a comback. We don't have a reverse airflow or isolation room on our unit, no PAPRs, not even any N95 masks that we could find last week (some were ordered in); so staff has been a bit crankier than usual about the minimal screening our patient's get prior to coming to the unit; rarely are labs drawn/urine collected, and sometimes even health and med histories aren't taken - which makes certain docs look like fools when the confused/psychotic/manic person they fast track to psych are discovered to have a low sodium level, UTI, steroid use for respiratory issues, or - hey, TB! Lots of foreign students at the nearby University, but hey, we can't profile...

We got a light rain this evening as I was driving home from work - enough to leave a few puddles in the road. I'm hoping that we don't get too much more rain overnight so that I can till both gardens tomorrow before the grandkids get here. If not, hopefully I'll get it done sometime over the weekend as I'd like to get most of the planting done so I can settle down and focus on weeding  Other plans for the weekend include using my two $5 off $25 purchase Dollar General coupons to stock up on more canning jars lids as well as some household cleaning items, canning up 4 pkg of 4 large chicken breasts each, letting the kids help make (and drink!) homemade lemonade, and defrosting and organizing the small freezer in the basement before the weather gets too hot. If the weather cooperates, we've promised the grandkids that they can roast hot dogs and make s'mores for one meal; I may save out enough chicken to make hobo packets to put in the coals for Hubby and myself :) When we made popsicles and pudding pops last weekend, older grandson asked if was possible to make ice cream, so we went down to the store room to see if we could find the half gallon electric ice cream churn. I picked up some heavy cream on my way home from work tonight that I'll use in making the custard after the kids get here to help; and Hubby will pick up a giant bag of ice on the way home from work tomorrow. I do still have the old (50 plus years) gallon size, hand crank ice cream churn up in the shed attic, but since we don't have an army of young men available to turn the crank on it we're going to have to wait until the grandsons get a bit bigger before we haul it out

Well, I think I'm going to cruise the forum to catch up on what's been happening lately before I head off to bed. Take care, everyone; stay safe, and stay as happy as you can!
