Good morning Sheree! Thanks for starting the new thread

Feral I am very happy that the procedure went well but of course the hospital you know how that goes. Many times I pulled Scott's IVs got him dressed and when the nurse came in said we're out of here.

Chores done ,still trying to get my big dog back so he can go in the outdoor pen today it's large area. He loves to run in the morning but he's getting further and further away and he doesn't recall. We're going to get a trolley I think because I can't trust him taking off like that.
We're meeting at a gun store to do the gun transfer today and then China buffet afterwards for my 18-year-old grandson.

Just put the last bag of coal in! I'm done. Weather is warming up very nicely.
That last bale of hay last week too. Pastures are growing good.

I was up early this morning, so I went ahead and started the thread. I had a few things to get done, before Bible study/fellowship starts.

It's warming up here, too. It is cold this morning, but it should warm on up this afternoon. We still have the little propane heater going. It should be in the upper 70's to mid 80's for the foreseeable future. It will only get warmer from there. I'm ready for it.

Warm 60 deg right now. Wanted to rest today but if we are going to eat, rest is not in the cards. Making a grocery run. Bringing the microwave back out for a bit. From the 6th to the 15th I am working brutal hours with a few 30 min breaks. Will have to make sure small salads made and food fixed so DH can nuke it when hungry. The job isn't stressful. But 10 hour days are for younger peeps. I am making the most of those 2 weeks because the pay is worth the sacrifice. And because the contract is mine again next year if I want.

Spent yesterday picking up sticks and digging up prickly weeds in front yard. Front part was all my back could handle. May do another part today. Will be doing it one section at a time.

Saw 2 bald eagles eating road kill yesterday. Not a good sign. They rarely show up here for road kill. They normally find enough fresh food.

Sixty here and sunny! I went for a walk and a short bike ride. Today, I went to the trail by the swamp. I ride on the trail as far as it is safe (there's flooding on portions of it) and then walk into a larger field, near the edge of the swamp. There's an observation area with a few metal benches and a sign from the DNR with images and descriptions of the birds, wildlife, and various plants in the area.

I saw robins, finches, killdeer, and various wrens and sparrows (they were harder to see). No herons or hawks today. I also thought I heard an owl when I first arrived, but that was a little late for them to be awake. I saw some patches of color, probably the first wildflowers. It was very muddy, so I stayed in the observation area.

Plans for today are housework, grilling, and whatever comes up. I'd like to start planting potatoes today, but the soil temperatures are still too low. However, I finally saw some tiny bits of green poking through my little tree, so it's alive!

I know that some of you order from Vitacost. I went there today to order some items on my list and found that most of the items that I purchase have been removed from my list and are not available. Everything has changed.
Vitacost has been sold to iHerb. I don't know what will happen to Vitacost now, but it appears that most of what I purchased there will have to be ordered elsewhere.
Did everyone else know this was coming? I am NOT happy!

iherb has been buying up a lot of smaller companies. I'm not pleased with their service, either. I order from Swanson, and probably need to do another order next month. Better day today - I've done some cleaning and baked an angel food cake from scratch (needing to use up some eggs). After Passover, I think I will bake a pound cake, too.

I don't think this week will have a lot going on (except a friend just texted and asked me to do a presentation....). we lost a long-term patient (it was expected) over the weekend, so tomorrow may be rough for the staff I work with. I didn't have much interaction with her, but others did. The hospital is bringing in a counselor. I've offered to cover so others can attend the debriefing.

I was invited to a Passover service and meal on Thursday by a friend. I have never attended one, so I think I may go. @feralferret - can you give me some ideas of what to expect?

Spinner, I'm so sorry! There have been rumors in different places that many supplements/herbs will be discontinued as small companies go out of business/get bought by bigger companies (see above).

I've been recommending to stock a years' supply, where possible, and also look into alternatives, especially those that you can grow or make in some other way.

That's what Cary and I do. Stock a year's supply at a time with all of our vitamins and supplements. What we take are the basics, and we get them at Sam's. Not hard to find at all. We did get them from a health store in Tupelo, until they went out of business.

Just chiming in here: ask your hostess what to wear (for me, it was "business casual" with a loose pants waistband) and what I can bring. Somethings are restricted. A fresh flower bouquet from Walmart was fine as a hostess gift.
The dinner I attended was over 2 hours. There was wine and many different foods. I'll let FF explain the rest.
It was fun! I'd certainly attend another one if I had the chance.

The dinner is done at their church (Messianic Jewish, I believe. I know they are both Christians that follow Jewish law). I am more concerned about trying to eat when my diet is limited due to the dental work. Dress is 'Sunday Sabbath' per my friend - dress or dress pants with appropriate coverage.

I don't buy supplements from Vitacost, mostly it is organic food products. I buy my supplements from local sources and DH has a few places he orders our supplements from. The food products I ordered from Vitacost are things I can't get locally or Vitacost had the best prices. It was just so convenient to order from Vitacost and I liked some of their own brand products.

Thanks, everyone for your responses and commiseration.

I don't know why, but every time I think of Vitacost, I think vitamins and supplements. I've never ordered from them, so I forget that they do sell other products, too.

Vitacost had been owned by Kroger for several years, I use to order from them all the time, for everything it it’s been awhile since I have, cancer changed a lot of what I use to do. Now I pretty much owe my soul to Amazon

We're Christian, not Jewish. What you described would have to be the Jewish ceremony. Best advice I can give is to look at the reference materials at CBCG.org (Christian Biblical Church of God). It is a solemn service and the only wine and food are the wine and unleavened bread that are similar in quantity to the so called "Lord's Supper" ceremony that many protestants perform.

Yes, the one I attended was Jewish. That was when I lived in Ohio.

Switching topics . . . I checked my s.s. account and saw that I've been approved for s.s.! Please celebrate with me. It has taken a lot of paperwork and emails to get to this point. In my case, it was not an easy process. I'm on track to start it on June 1 (I'm retiring on June 1, too).

I rarely order from vitacost but when I need them I need them! Thanks for the heads up! Any one tried supplements from Azure? I have never ordered supplements but order food monthly from them. I have always received excellent customer service. Just a thought!

Another quiet day here. I went to church this morning, did two loads of laundry before church and dishes after so everything is caught up. Next Sunday will be the Easter breakfast and I was asked to help in the kitchen. Generally, I enjoy doing so hope I will this time too. The older ladies who have been leaders for years have stepped back, and a younger woman is now in charge which will make things different. Not bad, just different. From what I've seen the lady heading the committee has been doing an excellent job. Having the younger adults step up is vital for continuity in any organization and we've been blessed with them doing so in all areas over the last year or so.

I know anger is part of grieving but have been surprised at being ambushed by a boatload of anger over my g-nephew's passing. Things that happened before he was born and later with his parent's divorce that I'd forgotten have flooded back. I know I just need to deal with the emotions and then let it all go and hopefully I will soon.

I just did an updated inventory of my supplements and have added several to my shopping list. I typically get mine at Walmart or CVS. I need to make a price book so I know which place has the best price. CVS often has buy one get one free or half price. My problem with that has been there will only be one on the shelf and that has happened often enough I seldom go there anymore. I don't have patience for that anymore. Sometimes Walmart is out of something but so far, they've had it back in the store the next time I shop.

My budget is separated into categories so when I shop at Walmart and get a lot of miscellaneous stuff and food, I put all food on the checkout belt together and all the miscellaneous together which makes it easy for me to separate and add each category.

It was a quiet day here. We went to church, didn't go last week cause dh has been working over and was tired. then came home and had lunch. Spent the afternoon sitting outside reading after he left to go back to work. DD came home and we went to eat burgers for supper, then came home and did our meal prep for the week. Ds will bo gone all week so there's enough meals made that I don't have to cook this week except to stir fry some cabbage maybe tomorrow. We have some veggies left from last week we need to finish off first though.
Then we watched some tv or read.

Today I need to get outside and get the rest of the garden dirt spread out and find a tarp to put over the part of the chicken run where the new chicks are going. They're not calling for rain this week but I'd like to keep them as dry as possible just in case. I am SO ready for them to move outside! My laundry room is in serious need of cleaning lol. Plus Rufus could use a walk.

I get all of my supplements on amazon....I pay for that membership so I'm gonna get my money's worth out of it. Also why I've started letting Sams club deliver some things from there. We have that perk and might as well use it. On some things its hard to mess up the order plus it saves me driving to the store and dealing with people.

Dh is so ready to retire...we're just trying to figure out if we can manage on what he'd draw now as opposed to waiting. From what he's figured out I can start next year as long as he's already drawing. It's all very confusing and insurance for me is the biggest obstacle right now.

I get a lot of our supplements on Amazon also...since we live out in the country..it would be a very long drive...to the nearest place to get some of them...others I have no idea if I could find them near here..we have Prime for free delivery but also have the Prime credit card...that gives us even greater savings..with a minimum of 5% cash back..if not in a rush for the item..it can be 6% cash back..I even find some canned grocery items we use less expensive than local grocery stores...it really adds up with free delivery....very meaningful..now that gas prices have exploded..

I also get somethings on Ebay..sometimes they are less expensive than other sources..for the identical item..with long date...and often they offer free shipping..

We have Giant Food here in our area...of Virginia....and they really are helping a lot with gasoline prices..they have a gas station across the parking lot..we receive one point for each $ spent...but on the store brand products 2 points for each $...
But the real saver is the monthly opportunity for the monthly specials..I am going before the end of the month..if I purchase $200 in groceries in 1 trip..I save up my list to do this...I will..will get 1120 extra points..if I purchase $40 in the fresh meat during the month I will receive 120 points...plus the website keeps the total to date for you...they have several offers every month..for different things that add up all month..if you pay attention you can see these offers in the rewards section and sign up to their website you can use their points to redeem those points to your store card..the bonus points are in addition to the regular points you receive..I have $1.50 off a gallon of gas good for up to 20 gallons on my store card ..so I will get about $30 off my next fill up...anyone in parts of VA and MD...can get these offers..the gas is $3.89...so I will buy gas at $2.39..when I fill up..
You can redeem up to 1500 pts at a time on gas
I don't know if other grocery stores that have gas savings ...have offers like this but worth investigating..

A nice warm sunny day on tap for today. We'll be spending most of the day outside doing yard work and getting my flower planters ready for planting. Still too early for setting out tomatoes. We haven't bought them, yet. Those will go in the first of May. Cary will be mowing and stacking more firewood.

I went through my miscellaneous chest freezer this morning to do some rearranging. I found more dry pinto beans and spaghetti pasta that I had forgot was in there. I pulled those and moved them to my fridge freezer, until I have a place to can and store more dry beans in the pantry. I hope to be doing a lot of canning this Summer. Tomatoes and dry beans. My stash of canned pinto beans could use a few more jars added. I also went through all the cheeses and butter in the chest freezer making an inventory of all that. I'm good on both of those for a good while. Flours (self-rising and bread) and cornmeal the same.

Ginnie, it is all very confusing and frustrating at times. That's why I'm celebrating that I've gotten to this point. It's not like the old days when employees had a party on their last day of work and then moved "up north." There's a ton of decisions to be made and then a lot of paperwork to verify employment if things were messed up.

And in my case, they were. I had several employers who didn't file taxes or take out social security. I'm within $500, according to my records (and best estimate) since I started the verification process, so I said, "Enough!" and called it good. I did a lot of contract work before it was a "thing," but that's what I had to do to survive. I did my best to avoid taking welfare. Looking back, I probably should have swallowed my pride and taken it, at least at one point, at least have gotten the food stamps.

But that's all water under the bridge. And I have zero problems accepting food now. There's a ton of it around, and it will go to waste if people don't use it. I don't feel as if I taking food from someone who needs it more, plus I also donate when I have a surplus in my garden (and donated far too much last year, which will change this year).

Anyway, good morning and blessings to all for a great Monday! It's almost April.

Lottsa coffee, PrairieWind! But I can't keep up the pace. The last two years have been miserable. I'm not lazy! But I can't work two-three jobs, drive all over the place to get to them, eat meals in my car so that I'm there on time . . . Enough!

My goal is to eat three simple home-made meals each day (calorie counts to be decided) at my kitchen table (or picnic table), get in my daily steps, grow enough food for winter storage (and donate a little of it), and pray/research/consider what God wants from me at this point and make a realistic plan for the next several years. Travel will be part of that, as will a very small amount of community service, probably continuing to mow and volunteer for occasional food pantry shifts.

I may also return to seasonal or part-time paying work if the right situation appears, but I'm taking at least one full year off to decompress, get healthy, and develop some solid plans.

We have nothing like that in this whole general area...I so wish we did. We are down to WalMart and one single grocery chain left but none of those chain stores in our town and they have no incentives whatsoever except a weekly sale where everything is still higher than WalMart, even on sale. When we had several chains, they were the highest. They eventually bought our last grocery store here in town and closed it.

Congrats Meemur! I have reached the point where it doesn't matter how much I make. I have no intentions of quitting work any time soon but do plan to work less. I am self employed and can call the shots. Have an LLC and all work is under it.

Remembered yesterday why it is an absolutely disastrous idea to go to Walmart on Sunday after church. It is indescribable. Lots and lots of people trying to shop around far too many big blue containers used by the folks that fill pickup orders. Thought I was going to have pray through after coming out of there. Stopped there because I needed crackers and a handful of items that are cheaper than Harps. I wasn't about to do self check with a full basket. 3 checkers and lines winding across the walk areas.

Went to Harps to get meat and it was so peaceful. Everyone was smiling, no lines. If the bakery wasn't out of pecan Danish, it would have been a perfect trip, lol.

We were the same. When our boys were little and we were starting our business, we could have gotten all the help but didn't. I so regret that now. It would have made a huge difference in our lifestyle and that of our kids to a lesser degree because it would have freed up a lot of that grocery money for other things. That which does not kill us makes us stronger though and we figured out pretty quick what was wants and what was needs.

I hear you about Walmart! I try to go between 7am - 8 am. That's when a lot of seniors shop. I try very hard to avoid it later in the day, sometimes paying a few more cents to shop elsewhere. I need to get better organized again so that I stop doing that.

I'm not well organized right now. I have some made-ahead freezer food and the house is tidy, but that's the extent of it. On the other hand, the s.s. is taken care of, the taxes are completed, and I have a rough budget for the rest of the year, so I'll give myself a little grace since I finished all that before April.

I've had my electric canner for a few years now and love it. I do a fair amount of rebel canning myself...mostly squash, green tomatoes and okra for frying later. I pretty much pressure can everything else. Those are the main garden crops I preserve and grow around a hundred pounds of sweet potatoes every year but I don't can those. My sweet potatoes from last year are still in the same shape they were when we first dug them. They are the ugliest sweet potatoes I've ever grown but the best tasting and longest lasting.

I agree about the ease of use with that canner and it's so easy to get four quarts of anything together. I follow several rebel canning groups on Facebook. Those young girls are fearless. I'm still not as brave as some of them with some of the stuff they waterbath. I know meat would be so much better but I'm not that brave yet.

You should...give yourself grace, that is. I'm getting an extension because we are still waiting on a 1099 that we never got.

I love my electric canner so much that I've thought about buying another one just for storage. I can everything in it, almost. Stews, sauces, soups, chili, meats, along with dry beans and tomatoes. If I could get enough green beans and peas, I would can those, too. I never would have used a regular pressure canner, so I'm so glad we have these electric ones now. It's so simple to use, and I no longer have a fear of pressure canning. I use mine year around.

I have never frozen uncooked beans. However I had a 25 lb bag inside that was over 10 years old. Recently I soaked some of the beans and then cooked- they were fine. I was a bit surprised We are in a dry desert climate so maybe that helped.
I keep extra flour and cornmeal in refrigerator too along with avocado and Olive oil.
Food lasts much longer as we age. We just eat less.
Meals are pretty simple these days with whole foods as much as possible.

We have Giant Food here in our area...of Virginia....and they really are helping a lot with gasoline prices..they have a gas station across the parking lot..we receive one point for each $ spent...but on the store brand products 2 points for each $...
Hy-Vee has a similar program. That's one of the things I really miss since we moved away from Kansas City. I saved a bunch on gas, especially when we shopped on days when they did double points. Gas here runs about $0.30 per gallon higher than Kansas City also.:(

The main reason I store all my dry beans, flours, and cornmeal in my freezer is to keep bugs and other nasties out of them. If I had a way to store them, without using my freezer, I would. I just don't have the storage space. I still have lots of canned beans from the grocery store to use up. Once those are used, I'll be able to replace them with what I home can. I don't have room for both right now. I can a few batches along as I use up some of the store bought ones. The only beans I'll still buy at the store are green beans and purple hull peas.

We eat a lot less now days, too. I can really tell that Cary is eating less, and with my new eating plan, I eat less, too. My food pantry will last us a very long time. We are eating more veggies and less meat, too.
