Prep Genrl Weekly Prep Thread: March 28 ~ April 3, 2021

Checked online today and Walmart had the beef and turkey in the Keystone meats. Our store doesn't carry them. I ordered two of the 28 oz cans of each (I had gift cards) and also threw in 2 cases of cat food to make enough for free shipping. It is really getting hard to find our kinds of cat food around here, so we get it when we see it. The order should be here on Sunday.

I received my latest Sam's order, yesterday. Everything I ordered came in the same package this time. Well, it was two boxes, but they came at the same time from the same place. Not like last time.

I wanted to make out an order for Walmart this morning, but our funds are a bit low from yesterday's shopping, so I'm having to wait. I wanted to order more of their canned BBQ pulled pork. It's really good for making BBQ sandwiches. What money I do have will be for our trip to LOWE's, Monday.

As a surprise for my wife, on the last Walmart order I got a freeze-dried ice cream sandwich for her. She was very surprised! She has not eaten it yet but I expect it will be used this weekend.

I can't function without them, either. Whenever I get a new script, I get two additional pairs of single lens (distance) made
at Zenni (as cheaply as possible) and put one pair in the car and one pair in my "grab and go" bag. If I were to travel on a plane, I'd take a pair with me. It's insurance. And though the years, I needed them. Although I'm careful, there have been several situations beyond my control where having those spare pairs saved my life!

I donate extra pairs to the Lions Club or similar organization, so what I do have is a current (or at least recent) script.
I had ten pairs lying around at one point, so I cut back to two spares. I'd go to three if there truly were need. I can read
without glasses if I have to, so I just have the distance ones made.

It's like hiding a spare house key somewhere safe. I think of it as being "self-insured."

We live by the rule, "one is none, and two is one". I plan to put that rule into practice with my glasses. In this day and age, two pair makes much more sense. Always have a back up.

Since my cateract surgery I've been able to afford several back up pairs. Before that through the VA I could get a couple of extra pairs of the cheapie frames easily. Although there were years where I only had the ones on my face and I was in deep do do without out glasses, could not read.

So my new shoes that I ordered came, I went up half a size because of the reviews, if I had not I would not be able to wear them. I'm wearing them inside the house to make sure I will be able to wear them, so far so good. The reviews said the sizing is off and I agree, hence getting a larger size.

I'm finally blessed with a brand of shoe that actually fit my feet in women's sizes. Skechers. A new shoe store in town carries a lot of their styles. I have been able to buy 3 new pair of shoes in that brand. Since their sizes must run smaller than other brands, a size 6 actually fits my feet. I normally wear a size 4 1/2 to 5 in shoe sizes. Their prices are reasonable, too.

I like sketchers, but they are too narrow for me, I need a wide and as my mother told me I have a good understanding since I wear between an 8 and a 9, depending on the shoe, but gotta have a wide width.

I've been thinking I should get a new laptop. I don't need one right at the moment because my desktop is still doing fine (though it's several years old -- already exceeded it's expected lifespan by several years). But what I've done is get solar panels for recharging things -- we have a solar-powered water pump for the well, and a couple of small rechargeable ones for lifting water out of buckets; rechargeable lights, a fan, and a couple of rechargeable lighters for starting fires. This is in addition to the phone, and my tablet. Plus I have several rechargeable tools now, that could be charged with the solar panels, too. I'm sure there is more stuff that could be useful that can be recharged. But my desktop computer needs AC power from the grid, and I do enough stuff on it that it would be hard to go without. So I'm thinking about getting a laptop, loading the programs I use most often on it, and setting it aside -- I could also use it as a storage device, come to think of it. I got a little sticker shock looking at laptops the other day, though. The one I last had cost around $400, and I think I can find a decent one for that, but the good ones are two to four times that much. (Way out of my budget.)

I got an Excalibur as a bday gift from my mom. Hubby invested in stick welding gear and some practice materials. I sold off some stocks and invested in a 3d printer and some fillament to learn with.

In 2 weeks, I will be going to a Voluntaryist gathering called Mid-Continent Liberty Festival. I am taking pickled quail eggs, pumpkin butter, kombucha, and plantain salve for sale and barter. Really looking forward to the event.
