Good Morning, All!

Hope all in the storm lines that went through last evening stayed safe ; oldest grandson was out in it as the co-op had outages in several areas; most were north and west of us. We had, and still have some wind, but it's not nearly as bad this morning. I looked out the door to see what the weather was doing while I was waiting for my coffee to be done and we have a very big full moon lighting up the sky over west of our machine shed with clouds skittering behind it - spooky looking! I'm too lazy right now to grab a flashlight and boots to see how much rain is in the rain gauge, but it doesn't look like much from here. Hoping it's not much as I want to get some more composted manure from the sale barn to add to my raised beds this coming week.

Hubby came home from work yesterday with some boards to make boxes to raise the height of my raised beds in the south garden - he'd made the mistake of telling me he was going to Home Depot to get new wheels for his 42 year old toolbox as one had broken, so I handed him money and told him what I wanted - over $200 for 12 2x8x8's! That sure took a chunk out of my garden budget! Sure glad we aren't doing any major building this year! I need to get more boards to replace the old ones on the picnic table; we may just have to eat our al fresco meals on the porch table instead, or get boards at the local sawmill and sand and paint them.

Wednesday I have to go get the taxes done; then I will probably pick up the grandsons after school; they are going to be with me and the other grandparents during Spring Break as daughter is going to escape for a few days. I guess that means I need to throw an opaque tub in the van 'cause I'm planning to do my Easter basket shopping on the way home from taxes. I picked up swim masks and kickballs Friday on my way home from work; now to find some swim trunks and maybe a new water balloon launcher...

No major plans for today other sweeping the porch, cooking something to carry in my work lunches today and tomorrow, figuring out where my moon sign book is, doing laundry, and taking a nap before I head in to work - Hubby doesn't have to work Sunday and Monday, and no wife around to point out Honey-do jobs after I crash, so he should have a good weekend too lol!

Take care, All - stay safe!!

Dollar General had the regular mouth canning lids. I bought one of the 2 cases they got in of Golden Harvest lids. I only kept 6 boxes because I still have some and I have my reusable lids. The rest were split between 2 of my friends. One cans for her family. She even learned to can chicken and pinto beans this last year. The other friend cans for fun and gives most of it away. She just does water bath items. Lids may become more available, but I personally think it will only be short term. I think once the gardens start getting close to harvesting, the lids will be hard to get again.

We made it through the storms, once again! Praise God!

We went under a tornado watch just as we were going to bed last night, until 4am this morning. We got 5 alerts for severe thunderstorms for our county all throughout the night, of which the last and worst one was around 3am this morning. Felt like the house was going to come apart with tree branches and debris hitting the house. No damage, but even more tree branches and debris all over the yard. We now have 2-3 weeks worth of debris, tree limbs and branches, and one tree in our yard from all the storms we've had, lately. Not to mention the rain! I can't even walk across my yard without getting my feet wet, without wearing boots. Things are just a mess.

Our "feel like" temp, yesterday, was 83* for our high. Today, our high will be 61*. It's 60* right now with humidity at 67%. Tonight's low is forecast to be 38*. What a difference a storm front makes! I was planning to move all my house plants outdoors, today, but 38* is a bit too much for them. I'll wait.

Tomorrow, our DS leaves for Texas. He's been staying with Mom. I hate to see him go, since we have been estranged from him for over a year. Things are all mended, now, so he will be leaving knowing that he is much loved and missed. If things work out, he plans to move to Nashville in about a month or so, or coming back here to stay with Mom, until he finds an apartment close to Nashville. He and his "B*tch" of a wife are going through a divorce right now. They do not have any children, and I'm thankful for that.

I have an appt. to see my Rheumatologist, tomorrow afternoon. I'm having some problems in that area. On Wednesday, I have to see my Ophthalmologist for once a year eye tests and new glasses. He does lots of tests, since Lupus affects my eyes on occasion, plus I take HCQ daily.

Hopefully, Friday, I can get to town for shopping if Cary is up for it.

I've been laid up with back pain for several days and am barely managing to do necessary stuff around here (like feeding us, and taking care of chicks and ducklings and goslings). My back is starting to get better (I'm taking ibuprofen every few hours), but the muscles in my lower back are all sore like you get after you've way over-used them. It's frustrating because there are so many things I need to be doing right now.

The garden comes first, but then I need to move us into our travel trailer for the summer, so we can finish getting work done on the house. I want it to at least be insulated before next winter, and have the wood stove installed. If we got nothing else done to the house but that, I would be happy.

When we moved back into town 6 years ago we got a ShelterLogic 8x10 storage tent for the excess from our forest house. With the sun we get here the tent roof started deteriorating. Over time it's been necessary to add several layers of tarps over the roof. Things stored there have found new homes or gone to Goodwill over the years and it's almost empty now so it is the plan to get rid of it this spring. Time and a few recent heavy snows have assisted in getting the cover off so the plan to dismantle it is the current prep agenda. I checked what it would cost to get a clear cover and call it a greenhouse, but $269 ruled out that option. Once the heavily drifted snow has melted I might put the bare frame on craigslist cheap for anyone who will come and dismantle it and haul it away.

I had a 6'x8' metal green house frame plus the 2x4's and long threaded iron we attached it to the ground with. Part of the metal frame was bent when a severe storm did a number on it. I put an ad at our local small town store for $100. Sold it in 2 days. Might be your frame has some value????? Just a thought..... :)

Woo-Hoo!! Leaving my name and number at Dollar General on Saturday in re: wanting to buy a case of canning jar lids worked out well - I'll be stopping by on my way in to work tonight to pick up the case - 36 boxes of a dozen lids each, so 432 lids! Do I sound excited? Trust me, I'm excited!

Picked 'em up last night and did the happy dance all the way out to the van  Bonus points - Made in the USA, Golden Harvest brand (Jarden Home Brands) and only $1.75/box of 12, or 14.6 cents a lid!! (Beats the heck out of fillmorecontainer.com's prices right now.) I've been using these lids for at least 3 or 4 years with no problems whatsoever.

The girl who called to tell me they were in asked me if I wanted regular or wide mouth lids - I was sound asleep when she called to tell me they were in and didn't think to say both, darn it! I reckon I'll be stopping by the store to see if they really do have wide mouth lids as well. I didn't notice any wide mouth jars on the cart, but that doesn't mean they won't get some in, I guess.

DH scored some reloading information Sunday (we had to drive a ways to pick it up, but met some lovely people, then went to dinner with friends that I have sorely missed and dearly love) - it was a great day.

Recertified for work today (one of many), then hit wally world for plastic containers to put our transplants in - the selection was thin. I did see that they had boxes of lids and rings for a reasonable price (no lids alone, ,though). I've transplanted about 60 tomatoes today and helped DH with some vehicle maintenance (here, hold this; bleed the brakes, etc). Our local nursery is getting in plants, but I'm not overly impressed. What is out now are some small annuals for Easter and the leftovers that they overwintered. I asked if they anticipated getting in everything they usually do, and she said 'yes'. Last year, they sold out really early, so if I have extras,

My doctor's appt. went well, yesterday. The Interstitial Cystitis (from Lupus inflammation) I have was flared up, plus, I apparently have a UTI along with it. I have a script for antibiotics, and a year's refill script for HCQ. Doctor ordered some "down time" for me, because my BP was too high. He thinks it's high, because of all the stress since January. I don't think I'm going to get any "down time" any way soon. I'll have to do the best I can.

Afterwards, Cary and I went shopping for us both some new shoes, and Cary needed another pair of dressy casual pants. We got all three. We ate at Cracker Barrel, then came home. We were both so tired that we went to bed early.

Tomorrow, I see my Ophthalmologist for yearly eye tests and checked for new glasses. He has to approve the HCQ, before I can refill the script my Rheumatologist gave me. That approval will be based on the outcome of the tests. I have suffered some slight eye damage in the past from taking it. Also, the Lupus affects my eyes with inflammation from time to time.

Another beautiful sunny day, today. High of 75 forecast. Tomorrow, high of 61 with rain. Typical Spring weather here in the South.

Got the stuff for oil change/filter for jeep. Got garden ready for manure spread.
Have to go to larger city for battery for my solar system, nothing local. System gets here tomorrow, have to take DH to doc appt Thursday in that city so will pick up battery and some other stuff.
My bestest friend and son coming to visit in April from Texas, good motivation to get going on that list.
We are supposed to have 2 days of yucky weather, then into the 70s for at least 2 weeks! Hoping to take the grands for a day hike. This summer, oldest son going to camp overnight with us out in the woods.
Have to get labs done but dragging my feet. I truly hate having to fast 12 hours for A1c.
Other than that, just regular stuff. Looking at getting a cold weather garden in. Hens are laying great.

Everyone sounds busy!

I’m still nursing a cold but I think I’m seeing the end in sight. Like Sherree, I’ve been getting eye, dental and medical things taken care of. DH and I went and got the first jab yesterday and my arm is so incredibly sore. I had adamantly said I wouldn’t get it but after talking to my Dr. about all my health issues and to make my daughters feel better, I caved. Have to go back in a month for the second.

I’m still waiting on packages from my Sam’s order, it’s absolutely the craziest thing. I’ve gotten 3 packages so far and still have 2 more that keep getting delayed and it wasn’t even a very big order.

I’ve ordered a few starter cultures for yogurt, buttermilk, etc. these are supposed to be ones that you can continuously use. I make yogurt in my instant pot using live cultures from store bought yogurt but they weaken over time so we’ll see how this works out. I’ve always wanted to learn more about things like that and I’m thinking it very well could be handy in the future. I may have to learn how to milk one of our beef cows LOL.

Funny thing I ordered a new pair of shoes yesterday, can't find the ones I got 3 or 4 years ago. I hope these work out. They are not for every day, they are for when I need to look normal, LOL. They look better with my compression stockings than flip flops. The ones I have still look decent but I thought I'd better get a new pair while I can. I usually wear sloggers or vionic flip flops.

Praying your eye doctor visit goes well.

Thanks, Judy. I do, too. I know that I will need new glasses. The fun part will be picking out the new frames. I don't know what style I want, yet. The styles change so often.

Cary and I, both, needed new dressy casual shoes for this summer. All I have are sandals and flip flops. I retired all my dress shoes (spike heels) long ago, LOL. The pair Cary had were beginning to look worn. We don't do much "dress up", but there are those occasions where more appropriate attire is required. I'm thanking God that I have been able to find a shoe store in Tupelo that carries the size I need. I had several options to pick from at this new store.

I feel kind of behind on preps. My inlaws moved and I've been helping them so bare minimum has been done/bought here. Not sure I'm done with the going back and forth either. They've moved next door to dh's sister...the childless one who is spoiled. She and her dh have done great with the inlaws though. They just have NO clue and she told me that if something ever happened they were coming here.... We live several hours by car from them and they are in a major city area. Them coming here never entered my mind. If they come then there's a chance that could increase people here by 11 because they'd bring dh's other sister and family. Not to mention I have a sister and her dh that might show up. There's NO way I'd be ready for that. Heck I've been reading a new EOW series and I'm not prepared for just us!
So I'm back to feeling overwhelmed which means I do nothing because where to start and where to put it? ugh! Plus I am tired!
I also realized while reading this book that while I've been feeling good about our water situation because we do have a way to run the pump if power is gone that an emp would fry the pump itself. That means no water. So dh and I need to figure out something I guess.

What a blessing Old Gray Mare!

Southernbreeze - try to make that downtime for yourself a priority. When stress gets too crazy, your body will make you stop one way or another. I say that with love, not nagging.

Oh, I know, and thanks for caring enough to say so.

With Cary almost dying from Septic Shock/hospitalized in ICU for days, another hospitalization for his kidney removal/cancer, and staying days at a time helping my mom with my sister/her passing, I haven't had much time to think of myself. All since January. All of these storms that keep hitting us has left our property looking like a tornado has hit us. Got more weather warnings for severe thunderstorms and tornadoes last night. Didn't get much sleep. A small tornado hit in the next county over from us ( about 15 miles from us). I can't do anything as far as the clean up goes, and Cary can't, either.

Hopefully and prayerfully, things will begin to calm down after today. My doctor told me, Monday, that if I didn't get some rest time I would be right back in his office with a super flare up with Lupus. I know that, but life has a way of throwing curve balls at you that you can't control, sometimes. Cary, Mom, my sister, and our youngest DS have been my only real concern, lately.

:hugs:

Little embarrassing day yesterday. Hubs was dumping dirt on gardens and I was raking hoeing shoveling. Got chest pain and shortness of breath so sat to rest. Did this a few times. Then back at it. Then sat on big tire to rest with it again and next thing I knew was on the ground. Hubs in back of barn on tractor so told the boys go get my son. He brought his EMS bag out and gave me the once over. I was having typical signs of heart attack, he insisted at least we go up to fire house let them check me out. On way there, they get a call so son says let's go to ER. I didn't want to go lol.
Long story short, labs, x-ray and 12 lead all good. Dx chronic dehydration. Got some fluids.
Son got me some drinks for it and I have stuff at home. Thing is, trying to do too much, drinking strong coffee to keep up.
All better today. No more brewed coffee and back on hydration regimen.
Got to find some work around as we get older. Daughter finished the garden prep.
Bless my little grandsons. Jumped right in, didn't panic. One of them has the makings of a fine EMT one day lol.
Hubs and I have managed most of the farm chores all winter. Going to sit down and set up schedule for everyone to help.
Anyway, just a caveat for preps as we get older. I'm pretty active but even so, we got to prep for this too.

Wow! I'm glad you're ok! Also, glad you have others to help out. We don't have anyone to help us. We are on our own, except for oldest DS and DDIL. His work has him traveling all over the country, and he/she has no time. He helps when he can. Youngest DS has MS, and lives in Texas.

you got to work into the season - been another year since you did the spring heavy lifting and 6 months of fall/winter lapse time - if it's not the heart and blood pressure - it's aches & pains from unworked muscles ...

Dehydration put my grandmother in the hospital twice, and was the instigating reason for her asking me and daughter to come live with her (she was afraid she'd end up in assisted living if she didn't get someone to live in the house with her -- she managed another eight years, before she died at age 97). It's really easy to get into dehydration and very important to prevent it.

I'm a little aggravated this morning. I was rummaging through my canned food stocks looking for something (we are out of evaporated milk), and discovered that a lot of my canned food is rusting. I pulled out four cans that need to be tossed, and will have to go through the whole thing because there is almost certainly more. The 'funny' thing is that the bad cans were not the oldest ones I've got (which came with us when we moved here from Oregon three years ago), but cans that were purchased within the last six months to a year at most.

Hey Kathleen, I've given cans like that to chickens, no problem, I mean opened and dumped of course lol

Yes, that's what I plan to do. It's just aggravating -- and I think it may indicate that the cans being used now are not as good quality as the older cans.

I've been trying to use the oldest food up first -- we may have to reverse that and use the newer cans up first, and then start canning our own again. Frustrating.

I think the newer cans are thinner. It also depends what is in them. Tomaotes, pineapple, acidic stuff seems to eat thru the cans. And of course, the lovely pop-tops..

I came across a can of diced tomatoes the other day that had a bulging top that was only two years old. I had to check all of them, but that was the only one. I decided to make dishes that require canned tomatoes more often so as not to lose any more of them. On the other hand, I have home canned tomatoes that are years old on my shelves that are still good.

I don't think the cans are made to last as long as they once did. That spells trouble for a lot of preppers who depend on grocery store products.

It is pouring cats and dogs here so I am cleaning house and cooking which I am sure my hubby appreciates. Yesterday we replaced a peach tree that died over the winter and started getting the yard ready for the first serious cutting. Picked up all the pine tree and pecan tree trash after the bad weather that came thru on Thursday. Started fertilizing with compost and replacing pine straw in the blueberry patch. Moved about 40 thornless blackberry plants. Planned on moving the raspberries today but that won't happen! Those berry plants really reproduce easily!

I found that problem a couple of years ago in my pantry. I did not throw the cans out I moved them to a different area and I'm slowly eating through them, the contents are fine. Now if the can shows anything odd other than the rust around the rims out it goes.

I've got a couple of cans of Progresso Mushroom soup that I need to use but I just can't figure out what to do with it other than a bowl of soup. It just doesn't appeal to me, I guess it did when I bought it but not now. I'm pretty good about not buying things we won't eat.

SB: you have to take care of yourself my dear. We, too, have no one to help us, so we do the best we can, and in my case I'm lacking most of the time.

I agree.

My wife and I can think of nothing else to do right now for prepping. The weather here is finally warming (though it was 16 degrees this morning). I am urging my wife to walk some as often as we can. She needs the exercise and walking is about all she can do. I always walk with her of course but I hike some just about everyday the weather cooperates. Hiking here in the mountains is real good exercise for me, yesterday I jumped 8 elk while out.

Two of the cans I pulled out are green beans with pop tops, one is spinach with a regular top, and the other is sauerkraut with a regular top. I'm not too surprised about the sauerkraut, other than it being less than a year old, because it is acidic, but was a bit surprised at the others. None of them are bulging yet, but have significant rust on the bodies of the cans, not just on the rims, so I will feed them to the animals. Not sure any of the animals will eat the sauerkraut, though, LOL!

Before I tossed those cans (assuming its just surface rust you're seeing), I'd set them out and plan on using them up. Use Doc1's trick... he scrubs the lid of the can. Then he puts a bit of water on the lid, near the rim... and punches the can opener blade through the water... if it's sucked into the can (which all safe cans will do), it's good to eat. If it doesn't get sucked in, or worse, if it spits back at you... toss it someplace out of reach of animals.

It sounds like you need to get some sort of humidity absorbing packets for your cupboards or storage area. We discovered that cans that were stored in closed cupboards in our occasionally wet basement (heavy rains would cause water to seep onto the floor.. it would dry up within a few days, but the humidity was always higher than ideal), would rust badly, but cans stacked on open shelves stayed fine for years after the expiration date. Of course, I learned the hard way to not use the cardboard flats the cans come in to store them... the cardboard wicked moisture if it touched the block wall, and I lost several cans of tomato puree when the cans rusted and leaked from sitting on damp cardboard!

These were all on open shelves, but the house is a very 'leaky' old farmhouse (air leaky, not leaky roof), and this is a very humid climate. We don't have AC (because we'd be trying to cool the whole outdoors, just like in the winter we are heating the whole outdoors). I think I'm going to try to use up a lot of our store-bought canned goods over the next few months, and figure out a different way to store food long-term. May have to buy and re-can some of it, using jars (I have plenty).

I've started using the cardboard bottoms again (on open shelves) to help keep the cans from falling on my feet. I'm taking all the canned foods in my pantry out and putting them on open shelves. The pantry (small airless room) shelves are now storing my vacuum sealed jars of dry foods (of which I have a lot). This storage is all in the house.

Aldi has butter on sale for $1.89. That's the cheapest I've seen it in awhile. The store was fully stocked this morning, better than it's been in ages. Maybe because it's Easter weekend and more people would notice? The only thing that I saw they were short on was frozen pizza.
