Morning all; was having difficulty posting last night and after a long day at work just didn't have the patience left to deal with a uncooperative computer

Up to the pool for aqua aerobics with the usual crew this morning while waiting for the grass to dry enough to mow, but got surprised by a rain shower (nothing in forecast or on radar) so it will likely be the weekend before it gets done as we have more rain in the forecast, then I have to work Thursday & Friday.

I'm waiting for it to dry up just a bit before I go out to pick black raspberries, and will hopefully be able to get out and get some weeding done in the gardens if it stays clear another couple hours or so, but tilling is out of the question. I did go far enough out in the garden to pick (weed out lol!) a mess of young lambs quarter for Hubby to cook up with a bit of bacon and onion for lunch. I swear that I could pick enough purslane and lambs quarter for our dinner every day of the week just by weeding a few feet of garden row! Didn't notice any burdock out in the garden rows, but it is coming up in several other places, so could also dig those roots if we needed 'em!

Earlier this year, I wanted to trial an idea I've had in the back of my mind for using the mixed bird seed I buy for my feeders to plant a small garden for emergency human use - I nearly always have at least 20# on hand as I buy 2 40# bags of it at a time. Unfortunately, I didn't have my head on straight and 'planted' the garden by tossing a few handfuls of mixed bird seed in a small tilled up area - bad, bad plan as I couldn't tell some of the stuff that was coming up from the natural weeds.

I should have separated out the seeds and planted them in rows instead so that I would know what should be coming up. I may trial it again in a 4x8 raised bed by doing so. I do know that the sunflower seed bird feed does do well for planting - it's what we use to plant a patch every year. Can't keep the finches and doves out of it once the seeds are set, and the wild turkeys walk the rows to pick up any seeds those two miss.

Hubby just called out that lunch is about done; I stayed up late reading several chapters of Kathy's "Over the Mountain And Through the Fire" last night so I'm thinking a short cat-nap after lunch might be a plan - give that garden a little more time to dry off, ya know

Take care all; keep your wits about you if you are out and about today!

Pool with the neighbor lady today, then snagged the three grandkids and headed to town. Picked up a couple of $1 pkg of queen size panty hose at the Dollar Tree today; cut one pair into sections, then tied the top closed before popping them over my baby broccoli heads; then rubber banded them to the stems to keep those cabbage worms from getting on the heads - was able to do all my plants with one pair so I guess I have a spare pair for fall crops :) Picked up party stuff for little grandson's birthday while we were in town as well - same stuff at Wal Mart and Dollar General, but cheaper at Dollar Tree than those two places. I still need to snag an ice cream cake Saturday evening, but then will be done with party prep - our small local grocery store makes them for half the price of DQ, but you have to decorate them yourself - I have some stencils so no problem! Got the kids back to daughter's house and spent another two hours in the pool with them, then used two of the School Sports discount cards that were set to expire on 6/30 to pick up buy-one/get-one-free milkshakes and pizzas for supper. Now I'm just trying to stay awake long enough to catch up on the forum - don't think I'll have any trouble sleeping tonight after trying to keep up with the kids all day

We are in the process of purchasing the 72 acres that surround our ten acres. We made an offer and the seller has accepted. The survayors will be here next week. Scares the crap out of me really! But having our crazy liberal neighbor buy it scares me more. I have reworked our budget, and we can swing it without a lotof strain. Just the amount is daunting at our age. We will be able to cut hay and maybe some timber at first. But most has been neglected for over 10 years so it is a mess. Lots of brush and acres of wild blackberries. We need to make a little income off it, if nothing more than to make the tax man happy that weare trying.

We had talked to the owner a couple times in the 6 years he had it, and told him we would like to buy part of it, if he ever wanted to sell. He kept 4 acres that has access from a county road just incase he needed it to fall back on.

That reminds me, I need to rotate the pantry cans this weekend. Have a few that are probably bad as I haven't moved them in 3 years......

When I walk into my pantry room and begin to see vacant or thinning spaces on the shelves, I know it's time to do an inventory of those items that are getting low. I did that a couple of months back, and am now in the process of restocking some items. I've almost completed that task. Just waiting now for my gardens to come in so that I can begin the process of adding canned veggies back to the shelves, too.

Worked weeding the back garden this am. We'll have melons, corn, pumpkins, and turnips if it all makes. The cabbage and carrots are a wash,I think. Final for this class is Monday, so I"ll be studying at work tonight.
