Good Morning All - and wishing all of our wonderful fathers here a very Happy Father's Day!

It's misting just a bit of rain this morning - not even enough to get the rain gauge damp! - so I'm going to go out in a bit and try to get the last few things planted in the garden - second row of green/wax beans, beets for greens, cucumbers. I need to mix some of the composted manure from the sale barn with a bag of potting soil to finish filling out a raised bed so that I can get the watermelons planted. I may also till a strip out near the clothesline to plant sunflowers. I did get the main garden weeded yesterday and used the hoe to make furrows where I plan to plant, but got overheated hand weeding an herb bed later on and had to stop with that for the day.

I'm letting a couple of poke plants grow up in the flower bed by the side porch - I'll probably cut the seed heads off all but one; not that much of a fan of poke sallet since it's time intensive to get safe enough to eat, but can't argue that it would be good to have around if needs be. The lemon balm is in fine form so I need to cut some and hang it to dry - once it is dry outside again; got 4 days of rain in the forecast but I'm not complaining as the plants need it. I probably need to take the buggy and drive around to see if the blackberries are starting to ripen yet - my raspberries are still red and they come in near the same time. The elderberries are all blooming; looks like we'll have a decent crop of those this year - I need to make more juice to can. Gotta wonder if Great Grandpa's elderberry wine didn't help him during the flu epidemic... the cemeteries down home are full of headstones with from 1917-18, including Great Grandma's - she didn't drink alcohol. I've also got a fine patch of plantain out where the north garden was 2 years ago - both wide and narrow leaf that I probably ought to pick some of to dry just in case. I've also got some odd shaggy mushrooms coming up out in the pile of composted manure from the sale barn - I'll just be chopping those up with the hoe and mixing them back in.

I've got my name on the list at the nearby orchard for 2 bushels of peaches this year; I'm going to can them when Hubby isn't home so that he can't give me nonsense about canning them in heavy syrup. I've also got a couple of bags of black cherries in the fridge that I'm going to use to make black cherry jam on my next day off work. Haven't walked out to the orchard to see how the cherry trees did - all those trees need replaced next year; I will have to put it on my list. I'd like to dig the holes early and make compost in them to get them off to a good start.

A grocery store in a nearby town has their brand of ketchup on sale for a very good price - 77 cents/24 oz, so I will try to pick up a dozen bottles. I use it to make home canned pork 'n beans, and - per Hubby, we are just about out (and how that happened, I do not know!!) They are so easy to make - bring the beans up to a boil, boil ten minutes, slap the lid on the pot and let 'em set an hour or so. Strain the beans out into jars, mix 8-10 cups of bean broth with a 24 oz bottle of catsup and a heaping spoonful of seasoned salt. Put a piece of fat bacon on top of the beans, ladle over the seasoned broth, wipe rim, add lid and band, pressure can at 10# for 75 minutes for pints, 90 minutes for quarts. Make sure you have plenty of liquid in the jars since the canning time is so long.

We've been having some problems with masked marauders on the porch; so far the score is 4/0 with us on the winning side. Could be worse, Hubby's Aunt sent a photo of a bear on her porch.... I'm usually live and let live, but dug up plants, broken pots, and torn down hummingbird feeders tend to bring out my less gentle side.

Well, I have to work tonight and that means taking a nap this afternoon, so I reckon I'd better get out and start getting things done. You folks all take care, stay safe out there!!

Just popped over to Sams as a friend told me they had these air-tight pet food containers on a one-time deal for $25. They were exactly what I was looking for, so I'm glad I got me one. While there I also got some canned chicken, some beenie-weenies, some salt, some sodas, some baking mixes and some hot cocoa packets. Looked at the meat and rib-eyes were $16 a lb. Glad I got mine a couple of months ago at $4 lb. Don't have any room in the freezer anyway :)

Spent the morning spraying thistle (and making flower essences). I'm going to do some baking after I get off line.

This week is busy with 3 12 hour shifts and having to recertify for ACLS (advanced cardiac life support). The gardens are doing so-so.

Once we found out that Walmart was caving to BLM, we decided not to go there anymore. We switched to Kroger and Aldi's for our groceries. NOW, I'm hearing from our DIL this morning that Kroger has now caved as well! Anyone else hearing this about Kroger?

What are we going to do if everything/every place we know bows down to them? I'm telling you, it's getting harder and harder to shop anywhere without my conscience being seared. I feel like Lot.

I still have over a week, before our next shopping trip. Hopefully, by then I will have decided what to do and where to go. In our mid-sized city, we don't have a lot of choices.

Yes. And Kroger has stores with several other names, like Fry's.
Honestly if you look at any big national company you will likely find they donated to many causes that most on here do not approve of. It is just the way it is. A big corporation hires an expensive CEO and that person is almost always a Democrat and they dictate what that company does. You can choose to only deal with local stores but even they buy from bigger corporations and not direct for manufacturers.
The boycott thing is fine and many people of both political parties do boycotts but seldom do these boycotters really investigate those corporations.
I sometimes boycott places but I am also practical. I am not going to hurt my family fiances by doing something that will have little or no effect anyway.

Thanks. We have boycotted so many companies that it's leaving us with practically no where to shop. If we can buy from Mom and Pop places, we do, but there's not many of those left out there. And yes, the choices we have already made for boycotting (Walmart) has cost us extra (Kroger), and I always try to shop frugally.

I prefer Kroger over walmart. They have much better meat, walmart has crappy meat with additives in fresh meat, I stopped buying meat at walmart years ago. Sams on the other hand has great meat. DH says its the same meat because he was a truck driver and delivered to both stores. I disagree with him on that. Kroger has much better meat. Unfortunately the nearest Kroger to me is 70 miles away and there are three walmarts in three different directions that are 30 miles away. We are blessed to have freezers full of venison and home grown or wild pork. Although I do get meat in some commodities, but its not a main stay as far as meat is concerned.

There are things and places that I have boycotted for years and LOL sometimes I can't remember way I was boycotting something, but I know not to buy that product.

We can only do what we can do, do what you can with what you have. God is good all the time.

We are going to town this afternoon and DH wants to go to walmart, personally I can't think of a thing I want or need to buy. He wants bananas and orange juice. I may get a loaf of 21 grain bread. He eats "light" bread.

I've been harvested swiss chard from the gardens and freezing it for soups and stirfry. My onions will be next then it's pickling season. My cabbage is not heading but I'm considering cutting the leaves off and blanching them for the freezer. Still stocking up but I've turned my attention to more meatless meals due to the cost.

I did buy an air fryer and we really like it! I've been enjoying some new recipes and the ease of cooking with it. Next up is seeing which flat breads we like best. I like naan and frybread so those are first.

Planned a mega Walmart run for this morning. I tried to do it last week but it was pouring rain and we had flash flooding. Restocked the motor oil that husband used the last quart of and didn't bother to tell me. Found some Excedrin! And they let me buy it! They took down all the "limit signs" but then when you get to the register, it won't ring up more than 1 of the item...
I wanted a couple king size comforters. They didn't have a single one in the store. The biggest thing they had was a full size bedspread and that's not big enough. They had a very limited selection of sheets and towels.
No distilled water in the store. I'm not out, but after recent months, I get worried if I get down to 12 gallons. Hurricane season, I definitely want extra water in the house.
The cats are back to a 3 month supply of food.
I've got to get back to serious stocking. I've been working so much overtime that it's all I can do to get home and do my farm chores and look after my little garden.

Marsydoats, you may have to order your comforters on line. I needed an external cd/dvd player for my new computer, the store had none but the nice young man who waited on me looked it up and the had it online. I ordered when I got home. It was under the usual 35 dollars for free shipping but it was free shipping with a longer shipping time, I went with the longer shipping time for free shipping.

I went to walmart yesterday afternoon and I noticed several holes, but darn if I didn't find a 5.0 cuft freezer, and I grabbed it. I think you just never know what you will find in the stores.

Judy, nobody will deliver to me so I can't win. Fed Ex and UPS leave my stuff at the neighbors after repeatedly being told not to. I don't understand why they will fight her 22 dogs rather than come to my house. PO won't deliver here if it won't fit in the box. It's an hour drive round trip to pick up stuff. I gave up ordering online.

I canned up 4 roosters. They made 6 quarts in broth. I also canned green beans. We don't really need the beans, but with the way things are going, I figure, better safe than sorry. I have been freezing fruit, plums, blueberries, and peaches.

I checked my bees. They are doing good. I may be able to harvest just a little bit soon. I expected to see more honey.

Hubby is battling a kidney stone. It has moved from the back to the front. But it seems to have stopped. He has had over a dozen, so he knows what is up. It is not a terrible pain with this one. He has had the writhing in the floor kind of pain with them too. This one is not so bad. He has been able to work around here all but a couple days. I wish it would get to the bladder already.

We have to pick up a grocery order for our daughter's family. They are quarantined. They got checked fro Covid-19 Monday. Results aren't back yet. They have all 3 had minor symptoms and are doing well at home so far. Her husband ran a fever of 103 Friday night, felt better Saturday, fever again Sunday night. So Monday they called work. They are off till the 30th, longer if their test are positive. They can draw short term disability without the week wait. They are considered essential workers.we will put their groceries outside the yard fence and talk from a distance outside. They mainly needed fresh milk for our grand. I will be taking them eggs and peaches from our house.

I've let my radishes go to seed, the pods are edible and many use them in stir fry or salads. I've also learned that hostas are edible, so I will be dividing mine for more plants. We've decided to bump up our stocks even more. I'm looking to buy a solar charger for small things, but would like to get a solar generator. Next up, is starting the dehydrators for onion flakes.

Which part of the Hosta is edible? I have huge pots of it all over my deck and down the north side of my house. Didn't know it was edible.

Yesterday when I checked Walmart online I saw they had many LTS food items in stock (been mostly out for months). I placed a large order.

For those who can afford it now is the time to add to what you already have.

I was just looking around on different sites, one thing that is low on stock is hash brown potatoes and if they do have them they are pricey. I saw the hand writing on the wall last year (crop losses) and stock up on shelf stable potato shreds.

We planted potatoes and if they actually make potatoes they are going into hash browns for the freezer and to dehydrate.

Cary and I were discussing this yesterday. For our next run into town, we are making lists of everything that we might need for the near and not so near future. That doesn't just include food. We hope to be done by election time in November. Hopefully, we will be able to get it all done by then.. We won't be able to do it all in one trip, because things are getting scarce again, and the cost is prohibitive. Just steady as we go....always adding, always tweaking, and always praying.

Took a rare trip to the local small town today, mainly just to get out. Stopped at one garage sale that had a lot of stuff for cheap.
Found this Deni Jar Vac. It was brand new in the box for $3
Tried it when we got home with an empty mason jar. Very powerful and worked perfect. I even heard the ping of the lid sealing when the machine kicked off.

The kids have not gotten their test results yet. Yesterday was day 5. But they are still doing good. Mainly just tired. Daughter is still a little short of breath when vacuuming and such. Maybe they will get a call today.

I went to a yard sale yesterday. My sister in law and her mother shop a lot. Then they get tired of things long before they look worn. I bought 10 tops and 1 skirt for $21. I wish I would have been able to get there earlier, but dentist and dr appointments set our schedule.

I am going back to the dentist to get a crown in a couple of weeks. The dentist put a very large filling in over 25 years ago. He said at the time, he didn't know how long it would last. I would say that was great work. But it is getting very worn. If it breaks it can't be fixed, it is more filling than tooth. So a crown should get me the rest of my life hopefully.

I am noticing more empty spaces in the stores. Atwoods was low on ladies clothes. The only tshirts they had were wranglers brand. And their cast iron pans was really low, as was ammo. No vacuum sealing bags either.

I told hubby, I am going to get the grand boys Christmas now. I am not sure there will be much later.

We can't grow potatoes here for some reason. We've tried several different ways. I have bought frozen hash browns and boxed dried hash browns. To save room in the freezers I stopped buying the frozen, and the boxed type is too dry. So, I started buying canned diced potatoes. They make great hash browns. Just drain good, and fry in a heated cast iron skillet in bacon grease. Sometimes, I chop a bit of onion and green peppers in with them.

I'm still working on getting rid of all the canned whole potatoes that I bought 20 yrs. ago. What a waste on my part, but they just aren't good.
