Good Morning! Happy Father's Day to all the Dads here - hope you have a great one!!

Hope you all are having a good day so far - I've got coffee in front of me, grandkids likely to visit for Father's Day later today, and a pair of kittens to pick up from the neighbor's barn sometime today so it is going to be a good day here. If we don't get more rain showers today and it dries up a bit (high of 91*F forecast), I'm going to put down some cardboard between the two rows of tomatoes and try to get some posts set to tie them up to get them up off the soil. I'm also hoping that Hubby will nail together the boards that are already cut for two more frames for the compost pile - I'd like to make it a little more challenging for the coyote to get in it

Other goals for today are:
*Prepare two watermelons for the fridge.
*Drag a giant plant out to the porch so I can take cuttings from it.
*Get the miscellaneous seed packets filed in their container.
*Find some place to plant the rest of the plants on the porch.
*Weed, weed, and weed some more in the flower beds.
*Plop down in my porch rocker and enjoy kitten antics :)

Well, I reckon I'd better go get the sheets on the line and get back to work - you folks all take care out there; stay safe!

Our youngest DS will be arriving in about an hour from Texas! We're so excited to have him finally back here with us. Mom is expecting him at her house this morning. It'll probably be tomorrow, before we see him. He'll need the rest and quiet after making the trip. It always wears him out.

Sunday morning home fellowship/ Bible study this morning. We always have a great time studying the Word together. I've got the house all tidy and fresh. I wanted to make a cake for today, but with all the rain, yesterday, I didn't think it would rise very well, so I didn't make it.

High temp, today, will be 91. More light rain, too. Because of all the rain, mosquitoes are horrible! We don't have standing water in anything, but the ground is so saturated, they are breeding in and on the ground! Horse flies are bad this year, too. Darn things hurt when they bite.

All in all, we plan to have a great day! God Bless everyone in the coming week!

Ordered some new bras, 2 new pair of sneakers and rotated out a pair of new sneakers from my stash to wear, so I still will have 4 pair in reserve when the new ones come in.

Picked up a few odds and ends at the grocery store--all bogos: cereal, protein bars, quick bread mixes, canned beans. Also bought 2 more 48 count ramen at Sam's and will rotate out the two I have on hand now to the food pantry as they "expire" in another month. I don't eat ramen normally, but it is a "giveaway" backup that I keep on hand.

We don't eat ramen either, Dh has eaten it in the past, but I've never eaten it, nasty unhealthy stuff. Although I do have some and I may get more to use for giveaways, that's a good idea. Although I would never eat it others do and would be happy to get some. Sadly, many people do not read labels.

God is good all the time

Too darn tired to fix supper and Hubby had already fixed his, so I'm having a bowl of canteloupe and calling it good for now. Got a lot of things on the list taken care of - new kittens Emmaline (dilute calico) and (possibly) Hank (yellow stripe on white) were the first thing on the list :) And boy is Mama Wren all kinds of upset with all three of us! Once they start climbing, I've got chicken wire I can hang up where her birdhouse is to keep them from getting to it; hope she chills out at least a little! I've also got squares of hardware cloth I can staple to the porch posts where the hummingbird feeders hang if they start getting interested in them.

I managed to get a couple of loads of laundry done and hung on the line; bed remade with fresh line dried sheets, and the fridge cleaned out a bit. We also got the rewire hung from the t-posts in the pole bean area; then I put in 16 fence posts and tied up tomato plants while Hubby nailed together the last two raised bed frames we had cut out and hauled them out to the garden. We got them set into place and a piece of rewire laid on top so I hope they manage to frustrate the coyote if she comes back. I got a bit more weeding done, and rounded up the containers I want to plant the leftover flower bedding plants in - red and white petunias in an old tea kettle; pink polka dot plants in the center of an old dishpan with pink/white striped petunias around them. I've still got a ton of basil to plant - it may end up in between the tomato plants, or in the raised bed the potatoes are currently in after I pull them. I'm not sure what all else is left in the kiddie pool I use to hold bedding plants; reckon I'll see after I get the other stuff planted! I'm still looking for bee balm to plant in my east front flower bed; it's about the only thing that will tolerate the black walnut trees in the side yard next to the bed.

The water heater for the pool the neighbor lady and I go to is not working, so I have a good excuse to stay home tomorrow morning to weed the garden, plant (and replant) a few more things, and get the porch cleaned up a bit before I take my pre-work nap. And I guess I probably better carry in the 6 bags of sugar I picked up at Rural King the other day while I'm at it - it supposed to be hot 'n humid, so they need inside sooner rather than later.

Well, I guess I'd better post this and get a few things done - gotta find the baby gates and get them set up in the utility room doorway as the kittens are too little to be outside on their own yet so will need to be inside at night for a bit; and I need to run a quick load of towels so Hubby can get his work clothes done.

You folks all take care out there - stay safe ('cause I'd miss you if you weren't here!)

We're getting rain from a cold front coming through so I planted some zucchini seeds in a blank spot. There's a break so I'm going back out to plant some sweet potatoes.
Got a jar of pickled zucchini done. Used some dill from my massive dill plants. I'm getting some large seed heads so I'll put them in paper sacks to dry.
Laundry and more stuff to gather for a sale or to donate.

I did an oil change on the town car and replaced a bearing in an idler pulley on the work truck. Small stuff but it keeps me fluent in the use of tools and techniques to repair my own vehicles. The bearing job was 3 hours all up and $17 but a shop would have charged me $300+. The oil change probably saved me $80. It all adds up so it pays to do your own maintenance.

On another front it looks like I have a small inheritance coming so I've been researching where the best place to invest it will be. It's pretty crazy out there in the financial sector and I'll probably end up buying gold or doing some major improvement to the property that will help me be more self sufficient in the future. Perhaps a LIPO battery wall but that tech is so new I don't as yet trust it.

Good on ya'!

Being able to fix your own stuff, whether it's automotive maintenance and repair, home maintenance and repair or any other thing will save a person more money than just about anything else.

We ordered 2+ months of wet cat food from Chewys. Would have been over 3 months, but they were out of 2 flavors. We always try to stay ahead on both wet and dry.

Publix had my favorite tea bags on sale (English tea) so I stopped by and got 2 boxes of 80 bags. Have a ton already, but saved $1.29 a box and will vacuum seal the tea and stash it in my storage closet. In summer or hot weather I only have 1 cup a day but when it gets cooler (rare here in Florida) I drink more.

On day 5 of some kind of crud I picked up. Slowly getting better.
We all went to the little christian school last Saturday and had a fantastic couple hours of sandlot baseball. The boys are really improving with their dads practice daily.
He finally got the stuck bolt out the second side of the jeep he has been working on for days. Got one side done, now will finish other side. Control arms. What a job!
Today the boys and I pulled all the beets they planted in the early spring. They sat and pulled the tops off. Then stood at the table outside and cut ends off, washed, boiled on the grill, strained, pulled peels, boiled again. Ladled into jars, put the beet juice, vinegar, salt and sugar in. They were so excited, they made 3 full quart jars. They love being in the garden and are getting to be some fine farm kids.
They are learning tons and ask good questions.

We had a great time with DS, yesterday. He's getting settled in at Mom's very nicely, and wanted to come spend the day with us. I'm sure we'll be having him over a lot. I grilled cheeseburgers with all the fixin's for our supper last night, and he ate his fill, LOL! He still enjoys his mom's home cooking........:)

Today, is yard mowing day. Cary also trimmed up some low hanging limbs on several trees in our yard. He needs to load them in the trailer, and take them down to our burn pile, before mowing. I'm doing laundry, and plan to do some baking, today. A Butter Pecan cake and Peanut Butter cookies.

We are having a nice cool spell. Was 57 for our low last night, and it's only going to be in the low 80's today with low humidity. Perfect day to bake.

We have been canning lately. Mostly small meals or meal helpers. Like stews and ground beef. Things that if the power went out, we could eat easily. Better yet, we could eat any time without having to cook.

I think we will try some salsa this week. We are down to 6 quarts. The wife is getting worried she may run out. LOL

One thing we learned, the longer the salsa stays in the jar, the hotter it becomes. The wife is very happy!!

Went this morning and got documents notarized for my pension. Anybody that says retirement is easy was lying. I think I'm still going to be filling out paperwork at Christmas...
Had lunch at our favorite restaurant. Prices have gone up, portions have gone down. The food was really good and we only eat out about 4 times a year. At least we got home before it started storming again.
Also filled out an adoption application to get a puppy next weekend, but I have a feeling they're going to tell me I'm too old. They usually want older people to adopt older dogs. I have been looking for 6 mos and they have yet to have an older dog that is good with cats, and my cats were here first. Dh doesn't want an older dog. The puppy may not like me anyway (I let the dog choose me), and they have quite a few people wanting puppies, since they have them so rarely.
I need to get my tomatoes staked this week.

I hope everyone is doing well.

It’s been pretty hectic here the past few weeks that I don’t think I even posted on last weeks thread. The hay is finally all baled and out of the fields. Unfortunately DH got into a turkey nest when he was mowing and mama didn’t survive, he brought the eggs (none of them got cracked) and put them in the incubator to see if any could be saved. 2 of the 8 chicks he bought didn’t make it through the first night but the remaining 6 are doing well.

Our daughters made good on their promise of painting my kitchen as a Mother’s Day gift to me. Not only did they paint the kitchen but the living room and halls. DH bought the paint and tools needed and helped them tape but they did the majority of the work. He also bought paint to paint the trim but he hasn’t had time to get started on that. The rooms look so much better, fresher and brighter.

Saturday I had to start a residual diet in preparation for the actual prep on Sunday for medical procedures on Monday. They stretched my esophagus and had a look see around. They set me up with a specialist since they saw some very large blood vessels at the bottom of my esophagus. Not sure what that’s about but I’d appreciate any prayers that all will be well. They removed 2 polyps and I’m waiting to hear on the pathology. This is my third go around with colonoscopies but first time they found any polyps. They also told hubby I had diverticulitis but not too bad. We skipped our usual Sunday family meal because of my upcoming procedures so the family came over yesterday and we celebrated Father’s Day with beef and veggie kabobs, baked potatoes and pie.

Prep wise I worked a few days in our working pantry last week and did some much needed organizing. Daughter discovered some mouse droppings on the floor in there so I got busy making sure anything in boxes or bags were stored better. They got into hubby’s peanut butter crackers (the jar for them was right beside the box, sigh) and a bag of miniature marshmallows, so not too bad. DH set the traps and caught 2 mice and nothing for the past few days, so now that I feel we’re clear of the nasty creatures, I’ll be doing a deep cleaning in there. It’s rare that we get them in the house and even then it’s late fall but he forgot to shut the garage doors one night and has left open several times during the day.

We caught a sale at Kroger using a digital coupon and got 5 packs, 1.5 lb packs of Wrights bacon for $5.99 each. Unfortunately they didn’t have the chicken that was also on sale or the brand we had a rain check on from the past few weeks. I had wanted to stock up on more Rotel, we use both mild and original but they only had the original in stock. DH does almost all of our in store shopping and he’s noticing more and more things either not in stock or even no shelf place for things anymore. He decided to buy a flat of various canned beans even though they weren’t on sale, LOL, I think he’s making sure he has the ingredients for his beloved taco soup. I put an order in at Sam’s and actually got everything in one box and within a couple days, which was a nice change. Added lots more nuts to the pantry. I also added some Weber and Lawerys seasonings, peaches and Prego sauce.

Got 7 days of rain in the forecast, starting today. I'm holding out hope that the weather forecasters are wrong, as it's about 6-7" predicted over that time. Yesterday was a busy one - I opened the basement door and found kittens - they'd managed to get over double height baby gates and were sitting at the top of the basement stairs meowing. Grand-dog was not amused by kittens at first but after a look from me, just turned his head and pretended not to see them. Let the kittens out on the porch, then got the towels I'd washed the night before hung on the line; threw in the sheets we put over the couch when the dog is here, then went outside and got the weeds hoed from in between the plants in the in-ground garden - that was a solid two hour job. Scrounged up something to eat since I'd forgotten breakfast, then went back outside, picked black raspberries, weeded raised beds, pulled weeds in the flower beds. Got the sheets put on line then searched for cat carrier - I swear I have two of them, but I must have loaned both of them out. Neighbor to the rescue... so I drove over to her house to pick up her carrier. Brought the towels in from the line, got cleaned up, loaded kittens in the carrier and headed to the vet's town - they got vaccinated and checked out fine. Dropped them off at home; then headed to Dollar General for a second cat box - enclosed one this time. Hit the grocery store while I was in town; I had a couple of 3# packages of ground beef and a package of chicken sausage in my buggy - plan was to make up meatloaf mix for the freezer and a pasta casserole for supper, but made the mistake of walking by the deli... they had a good supper meal so I decided the pasta casserole could wait until tomorrow (or longer) and picked up a couple of the meals. One meal from them = two meals for us. Got home and headed out to till the garden; then got on the small mower and mowed around the garden, grape arbor, and berry bushes. Spot planted some zinnias; and replanted grandson's Mammoth Sunflowers; then when Hubby got home we finished up the rest of the mowing before getting cleaned up and collapsing for the rest of the evening.

Today, I threw more laundry in the washer, shoved the ground beef and sausage in the freezer with the idea that I'd work it up on Sunday since I appeared to be lacking patience today, tied strings of baler twine to the bottoms of the pole bean trellises as the plants are already vining but are still pretty short, ran to town to pick up an Amazon order I'd sent to daughter's house accidently, dropped off the granddog, zipped into CVS to grab an ad flyer, and then hit the Evil Empire to pick up a certain kind of cereal for Hubby, who never tells me he needs it until he pours the last bowl full... (Why yes, I AM wearing my cranky pants today; how could you tell  ) I'm thinking that I'll carry the other half of my supper from last night in my work lunch tonight, and have a frozen breakfast bowl meal that I'll carry in for Friday night, so no cooking until at least Saturday afternoon. I will have to stop for wet kitten food on my way home from work in the morning, but that is the only errand that I currently I plan to run after work unless I figure out one that involves chocolate or ice cream - or both!

You folks all take care out there - stay safe!

I was rummaging around in the pantry room this morning while looking for an item. It just dawned on me that, since our DS is living in the area, now, that I might need to add more to our storage to include him. He had to sell most of his stuff, before he moved back home, and he's left without anything in storge for himself. He's unable to work. Even if he could, there is no way he can make up for all he lost in a short period of time. I just don't think we have much time left to get ourselves where we all need to be. Should the worst happen, he knows to come here to stay with us. That's been our plan even before he moved back home.

So, now, I'm on a mission to add to our storage to include one more person. He will help, but he can't do much right now. I've already cleared out another large space in our bedroom to store it all. It was a matter of rearranging some furniture.

Working up another pickup order. I agree we may not have much time to restock.
The couple buying our farm sold their house last night, it was on the market 3 days, they had 12 showings. So we'll be finishing up clearing out the house. I have about 12 chairs to bring into town, my plan is to have an impromptu garage sale when it's all here.
I got green beans in my CSA yesterday, I'll be using some of my new potatoes today for beans and new potatoes with ham. We'll have that and some sautéed zucchini that need to be eaten and cucumber salad.
Pulled up the broccolini and I'm going to plant some winter squash there.
I ordered a vertical garden tower, when I get it together I'll post a picture. It will give me more growing space and I can roll it around the deck for optimum sunlight or shade, whichever is needed. I follow a guy that has garden videos called Epic Gardening and he has one, I thought it looked interesting. A little pricey but for my needs it will work well.

Was 102 heat index, today. Not much stirring outside, including us. The heat and humidity are only going to be getting worse over the next week it seems. Our gardens are lush and green, though. We have lots of green tomatoes. In a normal year, we usually have our first ripe ones on or around the 4th of July. Not this year.

Too hot to cook today, so I pulled a can of BBQ pulled pork, and made sandwiches out of it (just needed warming), along with slaw and chips. We had Butter Pecan cake for dessert that I made, yesterday. The Peanut Butter cookies are in the freezer to eat, later, after the cake is all gone. It's gonna be awhile, before anymore baking is done.

102? OMG
its in upper 70s and 80s right now though it will get hotter. Raining right now lightly.
I splurged and got a bunch of junk foods and those chocolate fudge covered doughnuts, Entemens I think.
My chest is just so congested and I sound like I'm gargling rocks when I talk.
Wedding tomorrow, ball game Saturday, 4H meet Sunday. I'm doing a lot of vegging in my cabin. Everyone is picking up the slack. Thank God.

WanderLore, I hope you feel better!
I used all the tomato cages I have, and will have to stake the rest of my tomatoes. No blooms yet. It was like 58 this morning, and I came back in and got a jacket. Unreal!
My blueberries didn't produce hardly any fruit at all. Just enough to have some on my cereal a couple times. I will have to really get in the bed and work it up in the fall. Too many snakes out this year to do it now.
I guess I'm not getting a puppy because after I filled out all the adoption paperwork, I never heard back from them. My former vet (now deceased) told one of the rescue dogs that I ended up with, that had been hit by a car, that the smartest thing he had ever done in his life was go play in traffic. This rescue doesn't seem to take "Adopt, Don't Shop" very seriously. Dh found some Cattle Dog puppies that are the same price as the mutt pound puppies, but they are 3 states away. I'll keep looking.
I need to straighten up the pantry, I keep putting it off.
And I have to help dh work on the tractor today, Oh Joy. :bhd: Every time he gets one thing fixed, something else breaks. I keep asking Santa for a Kubota with a FEL and sidemower, but somehow it never appears.

We managed to harvest our first items from the garden.

3 cucumbers
2 tomatoes ( they were getting red, but pulled early as they were splitting from the rain)
A dozen hot peppers from an overwintered plant.

This weekend we are making SALSA folks.......

Also, we managed to get the roof framed on the chicken coop.

It has been a busy week. Monday my dear mother in law went on hospice. Father in law does not understand that her time is short. He lives in a dementia world that touches reality, but can't completely grasp it.

Tuesday we shopped for a hand held shower head for mother in law. She had been resisting any bathroom changes until now. We found one at Lowes. The plumbing supply house had very little in stock. Said they are having trouble getting supplies in. Hubby installed the shower head that day.

Then when we got home, we cut half the hay field. Wednesday, we did my contract job. Then Thursday morning we went to hubbys brothers to get his tedder. Thursday we got the hay baled. I sold most to one lady and the rest we put in the barn. We didn't makes as much as we had hoped, but it is nice hay. Hubby could have not done the whole field anyway. He was beat by the time we were done. Thank goodness our son and his little boy are here for a couple of days. Son fixed supper while I stayed in the field looking after hubby. Then after supper we hauled what went to the barn. Grandson liked riding on the tractor after supper. He is such a funny little guy we enjoy him being around. Mom

I forgot, we also bought a big bag of corn while we were in town. We will work it up today. I will cut it off the cob to freeze. I don't have room to freeze it on the cob. We will share some with the kids too. It is really good.

I went to my sister in laws and her mother's yard sale Saturday. I got several tops and a shirt and new wranglers Jean's for son. I spent less than $20. It was near the end of the sale and everything was half price. But some of the clothes still have the price tags from the store on them. Those women spend a fortune on clothes just to sell them in 6 months to a year later. But lucky me we are about the same size.

Stopped by Rural King while driving home from work in a drown-pour.... and yes, I meant to spell it that way  to get the baby sharks (aka: kittens - those little boogers have sharp teeth!!) more wet food. I'm glad I put off any other stops because the drive home was wild!! Windshield wipers weren't keeping up - it seemed like my car and the clouds that were dumping all the rain were moving in the same direction and about the same speed. I grabbed two cans of kitten food and ran for the house once I got in the driveway. Got the babies fed, filled the hummingbird feeders, and checked the rain gauge - 2 1/4" in it since Hubby emptied out the 1.5" when he headed out to work this morning. How many more days of this stuff we gonna get....?

Our heat index is 104 today and it feels like it. I was finally able to order the canned Lentils (Simple Truth brand) that I like from Vitacost. They only had 9 cans in stock and I ordered 9 cans.

I ordered a large pan from Amazon and it was packaged badly and the handle was broken.
They had no replacement handles so they are sending me another pan and picking up the damaged one. I really like this brand of Carote cookware. For 50 years I used cast iron cook ware and nothing else. Its just too heavy for me to use it very often anymore. Last year someone on here mentioned the Carote and I got a couple of skillets. Since I've added two sauce pans and they are so easy to use and clean up.

DH has been feeling kind a lousy the last few days, I think its the heat. So he is not staying out as long as usual, although he hates being stuck in the house. Although he has more than half of the roof done on the new deck, but its just too hot to sit out there the last couple of days. It is covered enough that I can sit out there and watch the rain without getting wet.

I ordered replacements for two of my most important vitamins for the two I just opened, keeping that years supply up.

I need to make a list for walmart, although about the only thing I need to replace would be water.

Commodities this month were strange, no canned food. And way too many packages of breaded fish, it was completely thawed by the time I got it so I stacked it in the outside fridg for the dog. I've cooked some of it and its awful, but our dog likes it. They gave us a care package with a roll of paper towels, a roll of tp, a wash cloth, tooth paste, tooth brush and soap. We did get more butter, four two pound packages. We;ve been getting butter for the last several months so I've not had to buy any. I may try my hand at making ghee.

We also got a couple of small steaks that I'm going to cook tonight. I probably can't chew steak because my teeth have gotten really sensitive, but Dh will enjoy it.

Judy, you can cut your steak off the bone and put it in the blender. That's what Mom did for Dad when he was between sets of false teeth. HTH!
It seems sad to do that to a petite fillet mignon, but its a consideration so that I can also enjoy it.

So we recently had an issue with the a/c in my walk in closet, but DH to the rescue, it just needed the leaves cleaned out of it. But to be on the safe side I ordered a back up window unit in case any of my others konk out. We can also use it in the window of the main bedroom of the cabin DH is building.

Just to be on the safe side I also ordered several bottles of Dawn Powerwash. This stuff lives up to what they say it can do. I found one that had a 1.70 coupon off on two, so I ordered that times two and got 1.70 discount on the second two. Last year I broke down and ordered some really good kitchen trash bags. They were still the same price as last year, but I only ordered one box of 90. DH does not always toss the bag when he empties the kitchen trash, which is about once a week because we don't put anything in that can that doesn't have food residue on it. We have another big container that we put paper trash that can be burned in that.

I'm still trying to figure out what food I might add to my pantry, still no clue.

If you have a food processor, cut it into chunks, then use the processor on "pulse" to chop it into pieces small enough for your teeth to handle. Since you *have* teeth, you don't have to get it to baby food consistency.

Thanks, the steak just about melted in my mouth, but I have some chicken that I cooked a couple of days ago that I'm going to do this with. Will make a nice chicken salad.

So I cooked the steak, it was so tender I didn’t have to chop it up, broccoli with cheese sauce and tater tots. Nice dinner and it was free, I already had every thing on hand.

There is a little hole in the wall eatery in the small town nearest us that we like their hamburger steak dinner, its about $20 for the two of us. We felt like the dinner tonight was in the same category and it didn't cost us any money so to speak. The steak came from commodities, I had the broccoli in the freezer, along with the tater tots and the cheese sauce on the shelf. The real reason we get the hamburger steak dinner is so I don't have to cook, but the meal tonight was not a problem to prepare. We eat on paper plates.

I absolutely love hamburger steaks with onions and gravy over the top, along with mashed potatoes, and a salad. I can't chew steak either (no molars), unless it's cut into very small pieces. It's easier for me to eat hamburger steak. I have partial dentures, but can't wear them due to my dry mouth.

ground beef has always been my favorite, my teeth issues just surfaced in the last year, I've got them but they are sensitive and food gets in between them badly. My gums are receding badly in the back. My grandmother always said to take care of your teeth, which I've done for the most part. My smile is my best feature, my front teeth are fine.

The weather is perfect to do the burn pile at the farm. Just about the end of burning we got some winds from a collapsed storm. No rain, just wind. But he managed to keep it tamped down. We always let the fire department know we are burning.

The eggplants and cucumbers are producing, I'm planting squash and more beans. It's supposed to rain all week so I want to take advantage of it.

Kind of a quiet weekend.
