I’ll be back later too. This is the first 4th of July that my youngest daughter and her family haven’t been traveling (thank you lord) so we will be having our usual family Sunday lunch/dinner with a celebration of the 4th combined. I agree with you Meemur, everyone be as safe as you can and keep your eyes and ears open.

Well, daughter picked up the two boys and the dog and headed out to her Dad's - they live down on a river and will have lots of folks visiting; people will be going tubing and kayaking, and they will shoot off fireworks as it gets dark. Hubby has scarfed down some leftovers and is headed out to the Motocross track for a few hours; and the kittens are down in the utility room sleeping off scrambled eggs - they've been outside playing all morning. I brought them inside because one of my cousins is down spraying the soybeans. I just finished tilling the east front flower bed - found a thing on line that said coneflowers will live near black walnut trees, so I bought three packets of seed. Now to decide whether to broadcast the seeds in the flower bed or plant them in a tray and then set them out...

First thing I'm going to do is make a more hummingbird feed; then I'm going to cook a big skillet of fried rice using some chicken sausage I cooked a couple of days ago and a few leftover and/or lonely veggies - it's fast and easy, and doesn't make me want to take a nap after eating it  I've got a quarter of an onion, a small yellow zucchini, half a small orange pepper, onion tops, a small stalk of broccoli and about a quarter bag of frozen peas 'n carrots that I'm going to throw in. Once I'm done with lunch and have the leftovers put away, I'm going to take advantage of the kittens being inside and wash down the porch; then finish planting some flower pots. By the time I get that done, the ground beef I just put out to thaw should be ready to make into meatloaf mix - I'll have to do three separate double batches of it because my largest bowl will only hold a double batch at a time. Most will be vacuum sealed and put in the freezer, but since Bambi knocked a nice, large green pepper off one of my plants I'll cut the pepper into lobes and pack the lobes with meatloaf mix, then pour on some spaghetti sauce and plop them in the crock pot to cook for supper tonight. I picked up some fresh green beans at the farmer's market yesterday, and have new potatoes in the garden I can cook with them; and will cut up the watermelon I got at the fruit stand for dessert. We will probably only eat one pepper lobe each; the other one will be put in the food chopper and added to any leftover sauce, then I'll boil some sort of pasta, add the sauce, throw a little grated and parmesan cheese in and put it in the toaster oven to cook for one of our work lunches this week. One of the things I worry about in an emergency situation is food fatigue - if you can change up the leftovers by using them in a different dish, they will be more likely to be greeted with enthusiasm.

Hubby has tomorrow off work - since the 4th is on Sunday, they are taking Monday off instead. Good thing, because they probably wouldn't have been able to work anyway as the shop where he works was broken in to and some dirt bikes were stolen last night, so it will have to be investigated. Guess it's a thing now - smash and grab crews come down from the city and hit the shops - but they don't take street bikes or 4x4's - nothing that will be licensed.

Well, I reckon I'd better get to work on the porch so I can bring the kittens back outside when they wake up :)

Take care all; have a safe and happy week!

Happy Independence day to all.

The ribs are in the oven, takes about 3-4 hours, I'll prepare the baked beans later and I'm thinking about that mashed potato salad too, that Marseydoats posted.

The corn plants that the rain mashed over are getting tall, I don't see any tassels yet. One of the goats got in my raised bed garden and destroyed my two biggest tomato plants, and ate all the leaves off my one eggplant plant, didn't get the one eggplant that was on it though. Also helped herself to some flowers I had in a pot. I also have a Coleus plant in another pot but she didn't get that, its really grown and nice looking. Its just about impossible to have flowers and goats.

Funny you should mention food fatigue.

every time I hit the big box stores 3-5 more of the huge spice canisters. I figure I can hold food fatigue at bay longer with more spices. Today I am hitting a large Asian with a huge spice section.
I hit the grocery store on the way home last night and scored.

3 bottles of salad dressing for the la
5 dz Large rings and lids
4 dz large lids
1 dz small rings and lids
1 dz small lids.

Just came from watering. Harvested 6 huge stems of dill for drying. I'll go back out and get swiss chard for tonight, plus my lone eggplant.

Finished the pickup order and heading out to one of the smaller grocery stores for ground beef. They usually have good mark down stuff too.

Need to get more benadryl so I'll head to Walgreens in a few.

The tiny break in the heat and humidity is definitely over, I’m already looking forward to fall/winter.

Not sure what I’ll get done prep wise this week although I do have an appt. this week to get set up for a mammogram *oh joy*, so I guess that counts.

paxsim2- I’ve never had Swiss chard, how do you prepare it please.

Hasher- I totally agree about keeping a good supply of herbs, spices and seasoning blends on hand. They can make a huge difference in otherwise bland food.

Judy- So sorry about your plants. Apparently my SIL went and bought a goat the other day and DD is not a happy camper. He’s had them before so he should have known better. When they got home yesterday it had managed to get out of the pen and was in their garage. Then he took off to the woods. I haven’t talked to her this morning to see if they found him yet, but he was no where to be found last night.

Renee- Your fried rice sounds wonderful. I love making extra stir fry and rice then using the leftovers for fried rice for another meal.

I use the small leaves in salads, the stems can be used in place of celery. But mostly I use it in place of spinach and other greens. Zuppa Toscano soup, stirfry, sauteed in butter with garlic. I also blanch it freeze it for use in the winter. It's prolific and cold hardy.

Hello my sweet friends! I am all tuckered out and ready to tuck in for the night! Tomatoes are coming in and purple hull peas are bearing prolifically. We cultivated today trying to stay caught up with the weeds and planting a little more. getting ready to start Fall crops in greenhouse...so now you know why I am tuckered. Hope everyone is having a great evening.

I had hubby give me a tractor driving lesson. He has had this one a few years, but I had not driven it. I took it for s spin by myself the next morning. Then we hooked up the brush hog and I went to work. I need to take over more of the work as hubbys back is hurting more. Hubby's back has been really bad since he had to lift on his dad.

We repaired our old baler. Hopefully it will run a while longer. Hubby can fix just about anything. He is a brilliant mechanic. That is something I will never be able to take over for him. I am just the tool go getter.

I some how let my instant potatoes run really low..like down to 2 pouches. So today we will resupply that.

Last week our feed store did not have purina layena lay pellets. The supplier had marked them off the order. That meant the supplier could not get them. So I just bought scratch a bag of scratch grain. It had gone up $1.45 since my last purchase on May 17th. I don't keep a lot of feed when it is hot. But the chickens get out almost every day to forage so I don't need as much feed on hand. At least not this time of year.

We just got back from our grocery shopping in Small town. Restocked the pantry, after 2 weeks, and also added several items that were on sale to bump up my stock (salad dressing, BBQ sauce, salsa, etc). I also bought extra pork this time, because it was still so cheap. Ground beef had gone to $5/lb, so I didn't buy but 3 lbs this time. Tyson's boneless chicken breasts were still the same price as last time, so I bought another bag of those to add to the freezer. I added more canned chili to my stock while it was on sale. Canned veggies weren't on sale, but I bought 20 cans of different veggies to add, too. I wanted to add more boxes of Velveet Skillet Meals (I keep these on hand for emergency meals), since they were on sale, but they didn't have any of the kind we like left.

Went to TSC to buy dog and cat food, and treats, but they didn't have my dog's favorite treats. We broke our boycott, and went to Walmart to get those, and a few more items that were cheaper there than the grocery store.

I think tomorrow we'll be going back to Sam's (We had begun to boycott them) to buy more bulk items for the pantry. Also, I need more Calcium and Vit D capsules that I take daily. Better price by buying them in bulk. More cases of bottled water and green tea, more cases of baked beans and pintos, coffee, spaghetti noodles, and if they have them in colors to match my bathroom, 2 bath towels and 4 bath cloths to add to my supply. I love their quality. More items on my list that I can't remember right now.

We plan to also go to the bookstore to buy more books for our library. We read more than we watch tv now days. We have a membership card, so we get a discount on all the books.

Cary wants to shop for more work pants, so we'll be doing that, too, while we're in Big town.

We stopped at our local Harps. They only had 3 packets of potatoes in the flavor we like and none of the other flavor we like. They had lots of the other flavors. But we will look tomorrow in the bigger town. I have my appointment for my teeth cleaning so we will look while out.

I changed my blood pressure medication with a nod from the dr. I dropped the Lisinopril and increased the htcz. I feel lots better. Less fluid and not as tired. I am getting much more done in a day. Hopefully I will loose a little weight since I am moving more.

It looks like DT is handling a different brand of chili, DH likes the southgate brand. A blessing is that we are now getting 3-4 cans of Southgate in commodities, so I don't have to worry about replacing what he eats.

for years I've bought most of my vitamins from Vitacost, they are owned by Kroger. I've heard negative things about kroger, but I like their brands, much cheaper than name brand. I ordered recently and they sent me two 15% off coupons with free shipping. Their Simple Truth brand of canned lentils are now 65 cents a can. I've ordered more at that price, it seems to me that they are discontinuing this, sad, but I'll have a good supply.

I am doing an experiment. We dont use our greenhouse for much in the summer. We are going to put a cord of green firewood in it and see how long it takes to dry down. We have a couple years worth already at current usage but if I needed to do it in a pinch I want to know if it will work. Only other exciting thing is I am building a water tower. Its 7 ft high and holds an IBC. My Dad has used them for several years and they work slick to water his gardens. When it is dry I am hauling water from a nearby pond so I dont stress our well. We have a pond on the property but per the boss I am only allowed to use that water if TSHTF. Otherwise it is for the frogs and salamanders to grow in.

I'm not going to be going to Big town, today, like I had planned. It is storming, and forecast to do it all day. Also, our dog is sick at his stomach. I don't want to go off and leave him. I can't get him to eat anything, even soft scrambled eggs. He was due for his monthly heart worm pill, yesterday, and I couldn't get him to take it. I cut it up, and mixed it with his eggs, but nothing.....Cary thinks it might just be stress, since he got so upset and scared from all the neighbor's fireworks on the 4th, and our neighbor has had large dump trucks coming and going beside our property line hauling in loads of dirt. He's been upset over that, too. He's a faithful guard dog, and can't stand for anything out of the ordinary to be going on.

We may have to take him to our vet. He can't miss his heart worm meds.

We have a rainwater catchment irrigation system that my hubby designed. It works great for us in our garden. We also have a pond that we pump out of. We wouldn't have made it last year without it! Good luck. Hope it works well for you.

I ran to the closest town to pick up some supplies for my hubby's business this morning and ran by the local Walmart. No bread, milk, only limited dairy, and very little meat. No sausage or bacon etc. I don't buy meat there as I support a local farmer owned butcher shop but checked just to see where food levels were. Shelves for canned goods were pretty spotty. Very few tomato products. Same for soup. I did see employees stocking shelves in housewares but no one stocking food. No ammo of course but I always check! Occasionally hit pay dirt there!

How is the pup doing, SouthernBreeze?

I just took a nice half mile walk - the road crew is replacing another culvert on our road so I drove my van down to the neighbor's place just past the culvert spot and parked it by his shed in case I need to get out for an emergency; then walked home. I can walk back down there or, if it's raining, drive the buggy through the field edges to get around the work area and on to his place if I need to. I'd forgotten how much I like to walk our road - the neighbor lady and I used to alternate our walking routes - when we had energy, we did my mile long road with it's seven hills; then either turned north for more hills, or south for a flat route for the other half mile before turning around. When we felt lazy, we'd start from her house where it was nearly all flat to do our mile and a half out and then back.

We've got thunderstorms in the forecast starting around noon and then off and on until about 4pm, so as soon as I get caffeinated, I'm going to head out to do some work around the place before they start in. I need to till the garden again, and tie up the new growth on the tomatoes. Also need to get that cone flower seed planted before the rain hits. I think I'm going to pull out the volunteer zucchini that came up in one of my raised beds - the fruit is weird looking; and getting rid of it will give the sweet 'taters I planted in that bed more room to do their thing.

Well dang, the lemon muffin from the batch I made yesterday is gone and I can see the bottom of my coffee cup - guess I'd better go get those tomatoes tied up so I can till the garden before the rain hits...

You folks take care out there - stay safe!

Cloudy here today. Plan is to pick peas and process tomatoes, peas, and maybe cukes. Hard work today but great benefits tomorrow and the day after! I found more lids yesterday at a local Dollar General. If you live close to me and need lids let me know. I can share.

SB: I have used ivermectin on all my animals, in place of heart wormer. Its the same med. Much cheaper and no issues for a couple of decades. Give them all a dose 2 times a year. Can follow a 2nd 2 weeks later if needed.
Yes, you can use ivermectin to prevent heartworms (there may be some resistance starting, though), but you must use the same monthly cycle of treatment. We got away with 2x a year worming (had to use a combination product because ivermectin doesn't kill tapeworms) on our old farm, but here is Mosquito Central, they are getting it monthly.

We were giving our dog ivermectin up until 2 yrs. ago. That's what his prescription wormer was made of (Can't remember the name). We have him checked for heart worms once a year. 2 yrs. ago, when he was checked, he had heart worms, and our vet said that the ivermectin must not be working for him. We had to have him treated. We've had him on something different ever since. So far, he has shown no sign of heart worms when he's been checked. He's due for another check in February. We have so many skeeters here that heart worm meds are a must.

I gave him some milk, yesterday, thinking it might soothe his stomach. It worked, and by the end of the day he was hungry. He ate his treats and dog food. So, last night, I made him something special with raw hamburger and eggs. Cut up his last heart worm pill (It's not a pill, but a treat that is chewable), added it, and he ate every bit of it. Yay! No stomach issues anymore. I think Cary was right. It probably was just stress. He's back to his normal loveable self this morning. He and Cary have already been outside playing soccer, LOL!

Now that our baby is well, we are going to Big town, today. Sam's, Barnes & Nobel bookstore, and our mom and pop military surplus and gun store for Cary's work pants.

We had our dogs over the decades on a 6-week schedule for heartworm meds rather than a 4-week (i.e., a month). None of our dogs ever tested positive for heartworms.

I'm have a bit of brain fog right now, and can't for the life of me think of the name of Frisco's heart worm meds. It's a once a month chewable treat. Thing is, he doesn't like it, and won't take it, unless I cut it up into his wet food. We get a 6 month supply from our vet at a time.

It really does depend on where you live. At our old farm, we never treated, and never had a dog test positive. But up here, just 220 miles away, pretty much any untreated dog will be positive.

Heartguard maybe? It kinda smells, that could bother him.

No, that isn't it. Interceptor Plus is the name of what he takes now. Milbemycin Oxime/Praziquantel active ingredients. LOL, I had to go look at it. Brain fog is awful this morning. Not only is it for prevention of heart worms, but all other worms as well.

We went to a big town yesterday to the VA. all is well, no issues, except problems with blood draw. I like for them to use my hand for blood draw, she tried both hands and my arm, almost nothing. She said I must be dehydrated, so will try again next week when DH has to go for a shot in his knee. Its been awhile since the doctor did any blood work and I asked her for it just to see where I am. Cholesterol is always higher that "they" want it to be, but I'll never ever take a statin. Higher than their normal cholesterol runs in my family and no ever had heart disease. Most of them had COPD from smoking. I imagine my grandfather on my mother's side had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth when he took his last breath. The had hard heads about smoking. I quit smoking when I was 40.

Supposed to hit 101* here today. I've been working on weeding, about 10-30 minutes at a time - then I come in the AC and rest or do something inside. Went grocery shopping yesterday - just to pick up the specials. I bought $88 worth of groceries, but it was down to $57 with the ad prices.
