Good Morning, All! It's another lovely, cool morning here - low 60's and isn't supposed to get out of the 70"s today. I'm thrilled with those temps as I need to get out and pick beans again, and till the gardens. Hubby had asked me to wait to till until he was at home (good thing as the tiller was low on fuel and he insists on putting gas in this giant 5 gallon can I can barely lift), so I ran away from home with the neighbor lady yesterday - pool (followed by a nap), then she picked me up and we went in to town to the local wine bar (one teeny glass) to listen to a local musician, hit the pub across the road for supper, and followed that up with a stop at Dollar General - do we old ladies know how to party, or what?! The hours I work, and being busy with the grandkids keeps me out of the 'local scene' most of the time (which is fine with me ) but it was nice to get out and see the town folk for a bit. Boy, some of those kids I went to school with are looking pretty old lately....

We've got a heavy dew this morning, so I'm going to wait to pick beans and pull weeds in the flower beds. I'm thinking about letting a few of the red root pigweed plants that are coming up everywhere go to seed and then save the seed. It's a member of the amaranth family, the young leaves can be cooked for greens, and the mature seeds can be ground to use as a thickener in place of flour, or used for cereal. I've collected the seeds in the past just to try them for eating - they need to dry, and then be crushed and cooked in hot water or milk to make a decent cereal. But we may come to a time when any food is good food, so I'll let them have a very small spot in case I need to propagate them in more volume later on. I'd rather plant 'em where I want 'em than have to go out and hunt them down wherever the birds will plant them.

The only other job on Hubby's Honey-do list after he puts fuel in the tiller is to shut off the main breaker in the shed and replace the light switch and light bulb for the store room in the shed - I've been asking him to do it for a while. I found another stash of auction lot canning jars in a corner that I need to move in there, but I can't get it done in the dark.

The small wine grapes on my side porch trellis are slowly ripening - but the orioles are eating them about as fast as they ripen. They aren't bothering the other grapes so I'll let them have the wine grapes and I'll cover the other ones that are easier to deal with, and picke them as they ripen later on.

Middle grandson's first JFL football game of the season is this coming Saturday, so I will have to remember to pack my team shirt and jeans in my work bag when I head in to work Friday night. I'll only stay for his game as Friday is my last night of 3 inna row so I'll be tired.

The neighbor lady and I decided to put off our sort of planned trip due to flooding in the area we'd thought to go to. We talked about it last night and decided we'd rather go mid-week than on a weekend anyway; but we'll have to wait until my next work schedule comes out until we can make plans.

Well, the cousins just pulled in and I'm still in my pj's so I guess I'd better get around and get a few things done around here. You folks take care out there - stay safe!!

We had a great visit with Mom, yesterday. She's looking forward to going to visit her sister for the 2 weeks. She had received her commodities box, and there were things in it she didn't want, so we came home with cans of tomato sauce, cans of pumpkin, spaghetti pasta, and 2 large bags of instant potato flakes! I'm going to pass it all on to a family friend that could use it more than we do. It will help to build up her pantry.

We got lots more rain last night! I think our water tank is now full again. Since the tank is our emergency water supply, I get a bit nervous when it gets low. I keep cases and cases of bottled water, but this tank is our main water supply if we need it. The rain barrels are for watering, and flushing the toilet, plus washing clothes, etc.

Wednesday, is Cary's rescheduled appointment with his neurologist just for a check up, and to get another year's prescription for his seizure meds. We don't have any other plans in big town that day.

Thursday, is grocery shopping in small town day. Just replacing what I've used. I need to cut it close with the expense this time. At least, I'm going to try to. I'm still not buying meat of any kind for the freezers. I've actually got the old one half empty now. Cary still doesn't want me to unplug it, so I'll defrost it, and keep other frozen items in it, but won't keep it full. Butter, cheese, french fries, cornmeal, and flour, mostly. Odd and end stuff. The fun part will be when I go through the other freezer getting all of that out of it and transferring it to the old one. That will leave one complete freezer to fill back up with only meat. Right now, that one is full to the brim.

Cary finally finished with all the firewood. We need one more cord to make up for what we burned this past winter. There is already a tree lined up, but he'll wait for the weather to cool first. He keeps a 3 year rotation going. It's too wet right now to do any more work on the raised beds, but that project is coming along really well.

Wishing Everyone a great week!

We have gotten over 3 inches of rain in the last 3 days. I picked all my tomatoes that were turning. A couple were already beginning to split. I picked 2 ripe watermelons after the first half an inch of rain. The rest of the melons were not ripe. I hope they don't split. Our area had just been added to the severe drought on the drought map. This rain will really help. The farmers need grass for hay and grazing.

I am still taking my thyroid medication. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks. Some things it has helped, other things are worse. I have not had a good nights sleep since starting it. My energy level is about the same or lower. Without medicine I had good day and bad days. With medication I am not having those goods days as often. I don't know what the answer is to this mess. Ok whine time is over.

I want to can some sweet potatoes we have left. I might try to tackle that today. We will see. And laundry is on the agenda for sure. I will have to use the dryer. It is raining again now.

Last week I got my eye check up. There has been no change in the last 3 visits. I ordered a new pair of glasses. My oldest pair I use to work on the farm. Then my others are my town glasses.:geek:

We had friends over for dinner last night. It was a nice visit. We had not had them over for a long time. We had just both been very busy. They don't seem to think things are going to get as bad as we are afraid things could get. I hope they are right.

More rain today. My greenhouse door sagged just enough I couldn't lock it so dh fixed it. Took all of 5 minutes.
Tore a tshirt into strips to tie up the plants that need the support. My Joe Pye weed is fixing to bloom. Going out to get that done in between the rain storms.
More laundry. Cleaning out a china hutch for more supplies. Filling another donation box from the clean out. The pantry is in much better shape now.

I canned cherry tomatoes today for the first time. ..did raw pack. ..next time I will try hot pack...interesting experiment..
We were over run with cherry tomatoes...we'll have more coming tomorrow for munching.

DH picked all the big ripe tomatoes and even the ones starting to turn..we have had tonnes of rain. ...getting the leftover rain from Kentucky and places south and west ...I guess ...not that rain is bad..but we are wet...very wet ....we knew splits were coming so there are tomatoes in boxes all over the place ...sending a huge box to the guy who gives us eggs..his plants have a blight and are dying and they can a bunch every year for the winter ..so we will send more.

I picked Kentucky blues and cooked those for dinner.
DH dug a mess of potatoes..so I am planning to can them tomorrow. ..then back to tomatoes and then squash

Being over run with sweet and hot peppers..so i will get the dehydrators going and chop and freeze a bunch also. I did a bunch of frozen mixed peppers sweet all colors and onions from the grocery store. ..they came out great and are really pretty in the jar...should be nice in soups this winter
We will also beginning planting for the fall..collards, kale, spinach, snow peas and some romaine and lettuce.. .and such...

Need to find time to order some more seed and fill more jars with dry stuff and vacumn and seal. At least it has been cooler with the rain. ..the heat index has been unreal.
It's all a lot of work but it sure does look great after it's done and sitting on the counter and seeing the pile of food for the winter growing :) makes me smile

And it's still raining........Everything has turned green again. You can almost see the grass growing, LOL! It's doing our little garden a world of good, though. We've got little baby green tomatoes and bell peppers going like gangbusters. Cucumbers are beginning to run, and the late squash is blooming. We've got lots of bees now, so should have no problems with pollination this time.

Rain, or not, today is laundry day. One of those days when laundry will be hanging all over the house to dry. I'm only doing one load, today, and tomorrow, it may be sunny enough to hang them outside to dry, instead, so will wait to do the rest then.

On days like today, I get in a cooking mood. So, I defrosted a family pack of boneless pork chops, braized them in bacon grease, put them in the crock pot, then made a pan of pork and onion gravy and poured over them. We get to smell them cooking all day. Will make mashed potatoes, and have a pot of pinto beans going. I think I'll make biscuits to go with everything for our supper, tonight. There will be leftovers, so supper for tomorrow night is also cooking.

Hubby dumped the rain gage. Over 3 days we got 5 inches of rain. My purple hull peas are blooming like crazy. I cooked our first mess of them in the crock pot yesterday. They are so good. The garden was desperate for this rain. Hopefully we will get a lot more produce now.

I canned 9 pints of sweet potatoes yesterday. I cooked them about 10-15 minutes so they would peel easier. The dog loved the spots that were too fibrous and the chickens got the rest of the scraps. Now I can make a small, quick casserole any time.

Cousins came down and mowed around the fields yesterday, and did a little spraying. The Cousin from my generation apparently got tired of branches trying to knock him off the tractor so got his chain saw out and cleared some things up. I stopped picking beans to drag brush and stack some logs in the tractor bucket - they'll used the dead wood to heat the hunting cabin this fall. Then I headed back to the gardens to pick the rest of the beans and then get both gardens tilled once he stopped sawing. The younger cousin did some maintenance work on a few things; then he started mowing as well. I was dead tired by 4pm, so didn't finish the weeding I needed to do, figuring I could do it this afternoon since there was no rain in the forecast for at least 4 days. Got up this morning to a thunderstorm... And it looks like we've got rain in the forecast 5 of the next 7 days - well, I reckon that will make the weeds easy to pull, right??

Instead of weeding last evening, I rested for a bit; then, since Hubby had replaced the light switch for the storeroom, I went out to the shed to attack the auction lot canning jar pile. I started with the boxes at the front of the pile and sorted the jars by size and type as I pulled them out of the boxes - quart, pint, half gallon, gallon, wide mouth, regular mouth, and where in the heck did these odd mouth size jars come from? Canada, I think  They probably came from the same auction where I got the odd size Bernardin (?) lids. I set those ones to one side as well while I was sorting, along with the half pints and assorted old fashioned jelly jars - they type you waxed the top of the jelly, then put a metal cap over them.

Then I decided to set the pints, half gallons and gallons off to the side as well, and focused on just the quart jars as that is what there were the most of by far; and it would make storing them easier if I had all of one type together. I set a wooden crate to each side of me and sorted the quart jars into crates by wide and regular mouth. I can generally fit 18 regular mouth quarts and 16 wide mouth quarts in to each crate. As I filled the crates, Hubby carried them into the store room and stacked them in the appropriate rows - I had him start with the wide mouth quarts as I'm sure I have fewer of them than the regular mouth ones, but I might end up having to move one row of regular mouth quarts over since I think I've still got around 22 assorted size cardboard boxes of jars that I haven't opened and gone through yet. I guess once I get them sorted I can figure out what to do with them - I'm down to only about 20 apple crates left. Maybe I'll move some bags of books off the heavy duty plastic shelves I have downstairs (where I was sorting books lol!), and use shelves and plastic tubs instead of crates? I don't have enough room in the house for all the jars, so they will need to stay in the shed; I rarely can in quarts any more since it's just the two of us, so may bring in a few pints, but I do have quite a few empty pints in the house already.

I'd been waiting to hear from the neighbor lady to see if we're still still planning a trip to a larger town a bit south of us; she's been looking for a couple of things that she can't find in our area. I didn't know if the rain would put the trip on hold or not, but she just texted to ask if I still wanted to go, so I reckon it's still on! Which means I'd probably better caffeinate a little bit more and find something suitable to wear to town  She needs to go to Hobby Lobby for something for her son; I'll sneak into the Goodwill just down the parking lot and see if they have any school appropriate clothes for the grandsons. I think that there is a Second Hand Rose in that town as well, so I'll see if we can stop by there. I'm just glad daughter had the boys in the right order - the 12 year old is Mr. Picky Pants; - only black athletic pants and/or skinny jeans, logos okay on shirts but nothing else - no bright colors, no pictures/words, etc.... He's a great kid, straight A's, loves to play football, etc.. but pretty darn picky about clothes and food. The 11 year old could care less about either one - though he does like bright green anything. If I could find something indestructable for him, that would be great - I have a pile of the athletic pants he's destroyed; the darn things don't even make good rags. He's a tree climbing, running through the woods, dirt bike riding, always doing something 100% all boy. He's my helper here on the farm - he was shoveling mulch out of the back of the Mule with his little toy shovel when he was three years old; he likes to earn money doing chores - last week it was picking up all the dropped walnuts in the side yard; he said the best part was getting to drive the buggy to dump the buckets of walnuts in the back.

Well, my ride will be here in a few minutes, so I reckon I'd better gulp down the rest of this cup of coffee and get ready to shop til I drop

You folks all take care out there - stay safe!!

ReneeT, if I could get a fraction of what you get done in a day I'd be doing good.

Since I;ve been better about taking the Curcumin (termeric) my leg is better. I didn't take it Saturday night and my leg was stiffening up significantly yesterday, took it last night and its much better today. 2,000 mgs a day with added piperine. I've taken that does off and on for years.

We went to church yesterday and it was so nice. This was not the church that is two miles up the road from us, they are true southern baptists that have bylaws made up by the previous pastor and we'd have to go to a new members class, because we left and came back, so we decided to go to the church that is 12 miles one way and were welcomed back with open arms and no new members class is required. The sermon was wonderful and I remembered why we stopped going, which was because I disagreed with the pastor on something, and I was an idiot about it. It doesn't matter, there is never going to be a church that I agree with 100%. This is a missionary baptist church and they keep all their money locally to help people around here. Anyway it was a blessing to go to church yesterday.

Dh is repairing fencing where the goats have mashed it down and were getting out every day. They are too stupid that they don't realize they could disappear and end up in some ones pot. They are all watching DH work. The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence to them.

Went to bed last night. Had to get up and work two hours on laptop as one family couldn't seem to get the hang of the online fair registration for 4-h. Then the program crashed and I had to start all over.
One family left now due to disagreement with another family.
This is so much work and expense because no one wants to help and or pay for anything.
Levi wants to work on his flint and steel skills every day.
He is making balloon animals now and getting good at it.
I went to town today, did some stuff for my son as he is at work. Then dropped paperwork off to a family, went to library to print stuff. Hit about 4 stores. Got gas and home.
Did all the chores this morning and tended gardens by myself.
In a minute I'll have to go in clean kitchen and see what to cook.
Levi and I picked a whole pot of green beans yesterday and cooked and ate them all.
He's my farm boy.
Gardens are doing great. The snake beans are out of this world growing like mad.
It rained a little this morning. Not enough so had to water again.
Need to rent the carpet cleaner this next week for living room.
Touch up paint on kitchen ceiling. Good clean before meeting.
We will be doing tie dye shirts and finish the fair barrel. Which I still need a quart of red paint.
It's only 3 pm and I'm already ready for bed.
Son works till Wednesday so I plan to go over his place and take a break.
It's my birthday next week. I'll be 59 and I run circles around them half my age. You all can relate I think.

I have lots of quart mason jars ..wish I had more half gallons...I can almost everything in pint jar be because it is just the two of us. It is so hard to get the half gallons at a reasonable price that I have started using the quart jars both the wide mouth and reg to vacumn seal dry foods...got a box of Kashi cereal that would go in a half gallon but put it in 2 quarts with a small bowl left over to munch on.
So quarts are coming in handy...after all.

Same here. I'm putting lots of dry pasta in my quarts, instead of buying more 1/2 gallon jars. I have lots of quarts, but am using only pints now that it's just two of us.

I tell you what, Judy - the 5 hours the neighbor lady and I were out and about today wore me out more than the work I did on Sunday! I think it was all the people-ing I had to do  Once we got back from town today, I came in the house, put away the groceries I'd picked up at Aldi that needed to be refridgerated, dropped the bags of kid clothes I bought at the thrift stores by the basement stairs, plopped down in my recliner and took a nap!!

I'm willing to bet you did as much when you were the age I am now. The days that I work, I don't get hardly anything done at home - it's drag myself in the door, take a nap in the tub, fall in bed, crawl out of bed, pack a lunch and head back to work. I do make a stop on the way home sometimes, but it's a hit and run.

I do vacuum seal some things in quart jars, but the Amish store has gallon jars - I pick up a box of 4 every once in a while. You have to use oxygen absorbers for them though, as the opening is fairly large and the 2 piece lids like for canning jars aren't available in that size. The lids that come with the jars don't have the sealing material where the lid touches the lip of the jar; but the Amish store does have different lids you can buy that do have the sealing material, so I get those for the things I want to vacuum seal; and save back the lids that come with the jars for current use storage.

We got a 1/2 inch of rain early this morning, and it was so humid that the garden was still pretty wet when I got home, so I didn't go out and weed; and looking at the weather forecast, it's likely that I won't get any weeding done tomorrow either. I have to go back to work Wednesday evening, and work three nights in a row, so I hope I can get them taken care of Wednesday morning.

Middle grandson has a JFL (Junior Football League) Jamboree on Saturday; I get off work at 0730 and his first game is at 10 am; then noon and 2 pm. That's my last day of three 12's in a row and I'm not sure the hour and a half nap I can grab at co-worker Buddy's house will be enough to make it through the games; and still be safe to drive home. It's going to be pretty hot on Saturday so napping in my car in between the games isn't going to be an option. I sure hate to miss it, though. I've got the next 6 Saturdays free, but youngest grandson has soccer games on those days as well. I sure do miss son-in-law - even more so than usual, since it's this time of year; he'd have been pacing on the sidelines of the football games hollering encouragement. Can't believe it's been 2 1/2 years since we lost him... Guess it's good that the boys have both a Mama and a Grandma handy; that way we can split the games and make sure the boys will have a cheering section on hand. Hubby is usually at work or at an IDPA match; the other Grandpa will come to the home games sometimes, but daughter and I are the usual cheering squad.

Well, I finally got the Mama cat and kittens in the shed so I could shut the door - had to chase off an amorous tom cat before Mama cat would go in. I've got to figure out how to catch her so I can get her spayed. Then I need to catch the kittens... wish me luck LOL!

Well, I think it's about time for me to head to bed; gonna checks and see if Kathy has any new chapters up on her stories, or maybe I'll just re-read an older one until I fall asleep...

Take care all; stay safe out there!!

It got hot again. The Japanese beetles are hard to catch when it's that warm, they fly off when I bump the plants. They're bothering the okra, but nothing else really, so I just try to get them early or late.
The beans are not putting on like I think they should, but there weren't any at the farmers market either, so maybe I'm being impatient.
Made a small batch of strawberry rhubarb jam today, bought frozen strawberries so I could use up my rhubarb before it's done. They had Colorado canning peaches when I went to the store for pectin, so I got a case. Going to go hunting for jalapenos in the garden tomorrow, and get them turned into jam.

There's been one lonely case of half gallon jars at the store for 19$, someone finally bought them. They'd filled the hole with quarts.

ReneeT, Yes I did do all that stuff when I was younger. When I got home from work I had to hit the floor running, only change my blouse and shoes to get supper on. I worked a regular 8-5 and weekends off. I hated Sundays because I had to start the week all over again. Thanks for reminding me, I'm glad those days are long gone. It was so stressful that I would sit in my car and cry, I had nowhere to escape. I'm so blessed now, thank you Jesus.

I have some of the gallon jars and oxygen absorbers and Amish lids..I use those to store my dried bread ...I tear up bread to use for dressing..the the last piece or two or three in a loaf and then dry it and save to make dressing at Thanksgiving..I usually use 3 gallons of dried bread and make sausage dressing for the entire year..since I cook everything thing in mine before mixing ...it is easy to save..l put the extra in meal size freezer containers and freeze it....and use it as a side for chicken during the year...just warm it up and good to go.

Since I am about the same age as Judy, 75, it was a real time saver when I was working full time ..a Costco chicken, dressing and a veggie and dinner was done...Cook once eat all year.

Then I make bread crumbs from the heels and crusts that are leftover...some I leave plain and some I season with Italian seasoning..then store in canning jars and vacumn seal.

A couple of the don't waste anythings that I learned from the depression generation before me. Both my parents graduated from high school in 1929. Somethings I learned from them and my aunt's and uncles and some I learned from Mammy and her husband Mr. Dickens.

They lived across the street from me when I young and married to my first husband. They were already married and farming in North Carolina and had 3 young daughters when the stock market crashed.....Mr. Dickens found a hired hand for Mammy to work on the farm and he went on the road ..he found work everyday .. somehow and sent the money home to Mammy.

When WWII started they moved to Portsmouth, VA and bought a small farm there..he worked full time in the shipyard.. kept cows....both milk and meat..and built a cow barn..
farmed all their veggies..melons and berries. ...Mammy sold veggies and melons from their yard .. the money she made was her egg money..and they saved their seed...he built the house they lived... built huge garage with an apartment over it...built houses for 2 of their daughters and later he tore down the cow barn and built the house I lived ...all while working full time.

When I first met them they were my age now and they could out work me then ...They made it their business to teach me to grow veggies..taught me to pickle and taught me how to can , save seed...and all sorts of things that I find that I now need to know..
They were like the grandparents I never had... God was so good to send me to them....I am so thankful I was smart enough to listen and learn all the things they had to share.

You were very blessed, hd5574, to have your parents, and Mammy and Mr. Dickens to learn from. My father was born shortly before the Great Depression; Grandpa was a tenant farmer and my father remembered being hungry during his early years. We grew a lot of our food, and also sold fruits and vegetables, had chickens, etc... Mama wasn't a fan, but she was some younger than my father and didn't remember the hungry years like he did.

I woke up to red skies and rain this morning; turned on the computer and found we're under flash flood warnings so not sure the neighbor and I are going to the pool today - I could use a day to rest before I start my 3-inna-row shifts tomorrow anyway. I won't be doing anything out in the garden unless it's to pick beans and maybe a few cherry tomatoes; and from the looks of the soil in the garden, I'd better plan to do any of the picking barefoot, and make sure the hose is turned on so I can wash the garden off my feet

Yes, hd5574, you were blessed. My mother was born in 1929, she said she was always hungry. She was a master gardener, but did not teach me to garden, only to do the dirty work, so I hated it. Same with cooking, I only stirred the pot and did the clean up. She didn't bake and I never learned to bake. She complained about frying chicken and I never learned. Don't get me wrong, I did learn some good things from my mother but I also developed a bad attitude from her too. Oh well, I was never hungry and never needed something to wear and had a stable roof over my head which is something to be thankful. I have a blessed life in my last years and my poor mother was very unhappy with hers.

I took DE this morning first thing in hopes for some energy from it. I took the Curcumin again last night and my leg was only slightly stiff this morning. I ordered another bottle of the Curcumin last night, a bottle of 120 only last 30 days because I take four. The cost is now more than $30, I pray I can keep a supply of it. I do have a supply now, use a bottle buy a bottle and keep about 6 on hand. I also have a good supply of DE. Money is now very tight, although the only thing I want at the store is two more cases of water. I really need to prime my berkey filters and filter all water. We use faucet water for making coffee and boiling things, that needs to stop.

Now that my leg is better I need to get back to working in my pantry room. I have a good bit of beans and rice in one of the freezers on the camper porch that needs to thaw out and get vacuum sealed. I was in the pantry room last night and found another bag of the expensive dehydrated carrots, that definitely needs to go in jars. So much to do.

We're back to taking old dirt out of the raised beds, and replacing with better organic materials. After all the rain, the soil is just right to work with. It's still a job, though. Cary is doing it all with a shovel and scoop. It's still really hot, temp wise, so he's only working on it first thing early mornings. The humidity is outrageous. When we go to small town, Thursday, he wants to stop in at TSC to see about getting one of those small hand tillers. A mantis, is what they're called, IIRC. Large Troybilt needs a new tire, and it will be ready to go. A mantis is just what we need for these raised beds.

Another large laundry load done, and hung on the line to dry. I'm having to watch the radar, since more rain is a possibility, today. I may have to do a "snatch and grab" if rain gets too close.

I think one of my bad teeth is trying to get infected. It hurts, and has my ear and neck hurting. My head also hurts. I don't have another dentist appt. until the 10th. I'm trying to hold out, til then, and he may have to go ahead and get it out, instead of waiting another month ( at least ) on the oral surgeon to do the rest of them. I'm only scheduled to have another filling done on the 10th, but things may have to change. I'm rinsing with warm salt water. Is there any other suggestions? I have clove essential oil, too.

Do you have any fish antibiotics around? Amoxicillin or Ampicillin will generally knick the developing infection down and relieve the pain... it will still need to be pulled at some point, but it will buy you some time.

No, I don't. I don't stock antibiotics, since Cary is allergic to most of them. It's times like this that I wish I did, though.

SB, you can chew on some raw garlic. A glove or so, is supposed to be just the ticket for possible infection.

Levi and I pulled the rest of the beets today and canned them. Hasn't been a good year for them, we usually have a bushel. This time only enough to do a quart. That kid is great. 8 yr old and I don't have to hover. Just tell him different things to do in the kitchen while I'm doing stuff.

Praise the Lord for small miracles. The mom I helped finish fair registration for our 4-H, is hosting the August meeting. Her place has in ground pool and we will have a cookout and finish a few projects.
Her 9 yr old boy loved our hike and I taught him to start a fire with flint and steel. She got him one and he works at it all the time. Safely of course using a burn pit.

Very hot next few days. I slept over at sons last night. He and I had a nice chat when he got home this morning.
Neighbor boy is here today. I'm resting then we will see what mischief we can get up to.

Ps: My grand parents went thru the depression. They taught us a little bit. I've learned a great deal thru trial and error. I hope I can be half the Grandma you all had!

Thanks for the suggestion, Wanderlore! I'll do that. Garlic is one thing I do have plenty of!

Had an interesting conversation with my 93 year old mom yesterday. I asked her if when she was a kid, if they ever ate cooked cucumbers. She told me that with the exception of pickles in a jar that they bought, she didn't have cucumbers until after she and Dad married in 1952!! I guess I shouldn't assume as much as I do about her life. She said grandpa (who died long before I was born) only grew potatoes, turnips, onions, and green beans.

I'm back to working fulltime (and would appreciate prayers - my job could go either direction in a BIG way). Have managed to do some weeding this week and I'm working on getting some dill pickles started.

Yes, Nomiflye I was blessed both my parents were born in 1910..so they grew up in a world where you had to have skills
Mom taught me a lot sewing and cooking ..frying chicken..soups etc....I still have the little step stool I used to reach the counter..Mom didn't bake bread or can or freeze...but made wonderful pies..the crust still gives me fits...but I was an only child so lots of chores came my way...dishes..cleaning ... laundry..windows...so I know just how you felt..she started working full time after I started school so I often had to start dinner after I came home from school... .Mom and I had a very rocky relationship also...I never managed to ever do anything quite right ..people think being an only child is great but it is not all it is cracked up to being.

My Aunt Beth, Dad's sister, taught me to bake bread...when I was very young she had a large garden...and she canned and froze things..but was too young to learn then.. gave me all of her mother's recipes..and after she passed I kept all her recipes also..she was always there to answer questions. I also have all the recipes from my mom and her mom.

Then later Mammy and Mr. Dickens filled in a lot of holes....my Dad's parents passed before I was born as did Mom's mother and I saw her dad once when I was only 18 months old.

SB..my dentist.. always prescribed.. Clindamycin 300 mg...3 times per day for 10 days..the fish is only 150 mg...but I keep plenty on hand just in case. You could always keep some in separate cookie tin or container and label it well.. You could also call your dentist and telling what is happening and he just might call in an RX for you.

One of my friends growing up always had cucumber sandwiches with lettuce and lots of mayo and salt and pepper.
Her Mom was from England and now I wonder if that's something they ate during rationing in WW II --- when I was a kid, I just thought it was neat. I hate mayo but would inhale the things at her house.

SB, I keep a supply of orajel, well the walmart brand anyway. Works great.

All I have right now is clove essential oil. May need to get some of that when I go to town, Thursday.

I took some raw garlic, crushed it, and rolled a Q-tip in it, till it was saturated. Applied on my gum all around the bad tooth. I'm going to keep that up, and hopefully, it will keep any infection at bay, until I can see my dentist.

I have some heavy duty pain killers if I need them.

I stopped by Publix on my way home today to hit some bogo specials, use some coupons and use some Ibotta rebates. Only two things I got did not fit into one or more of those categories and it was still $69!! Just for little stuff--cereal, rice-a-roni, canned chicken (great bogo deal), whole fruit bars, applesauce, vitamins, cake mixes, snack mix, cheese, frozen hash browns, spaghetti sauce (another great bogo deal), and some gingerale. Six little plastic bags! I will get $4.50 back from Ibotta, but still...I thought it was kind of expensive.

I do have a really, really deep pantry so none of this was necessary, but I keep getting more because I just think about how much more it is going to be in a few months.

Oh, Rice-a-Roni........That reminds me. I bought 2 boxes of the beef flavored Rice-a-Roni (they were on sale really cheap), and would like to know if I can just mix some browned ground beef with it to make a skillet meal? I've never tried it, but don't want to waste it if it won't turn out good. Have ya'll got any ideas?
