Prep Genrl Weekly Prep Thread July 12 -July 18, 2026

I use a sun shield in the rig if we are out and about but don't bother for the farm truck. We always have towels and gloves in there. Need to put a couple of big towels in back seat of rig. There's nothing like getting hit by a pop up shower when halfway between store exit and vehicle.

3 trips to town in 3 days have me sick of town but need to visit nursing home. Aarrgh.
 
My chairs just arrived! They are in 2 large heavy boxes. Some assembly required. Cary still has some yard work to do, after lunch, so assembling them will be last on his list of things to do. He hates putting stuff together, especially, if it doesn't go smoothly. It might be Monday, before he wants to do them. I can wait. He just used the lawn tractor and wagon to haul the boxes to the back deck.

I'm finished with what little house work I had left to do. I think I'll work in the kitchen cooking some freezer meals after lunch.

We are taking an early lunch break right now.
 
A couple of days ago we took off and went to the county next to us go to a couple places and then the super Walmart....we have a smaller Walmart near us...there is much larger selection at the super one..
..we were both hot and humid....and we have the smoke here..the air temperature in the parking lot was 109..have more idea what the heat index was..that was the hottest air temperature I have been in ...in quite a while..
It was since cooled some..but are waiting for some rain to wash the smoke out of the air..

Finding as many inside tasks as possible...to stay out of the smoke..DH gets up very early in the morning and has been watering the garden at the crack of dawn...
We noticed that are gas prices are rising again..

Yes, HD, the smoke is awful in places. I smelled it faintly this morning while I was watering.

I have both an indoor and an outdoor task list, and I'll listen to my body while doing things outside. It's a little cooler in my immediate area but the air quality isn't the best. I harvested more red potatoes this morning, and some of the white ones are starting to look ready. I leave those in as long as I can, so maybe next week. I'll dig up a few and check. The bulk of them won't be ready for at least another two weeks.

Beef Stroganoff, with a garden salad, and homemade cheese caraway bread is what's on the menu for tonight.

He told me, before he laid down for his after lunch nap, that he would do the chairs when he got up. He said he knows I would like them on the porch, since we are having home fellowship/Bible study, tomorrow. He will wait about spraying, until Monday. Ain't he sweet! I just hope he doesn't get frustrated putting them together. I tend to stay out of his way if that happens, LOL.
 
I can relate, SB! When I have to assemble certain pieces, I bribe myself with some great yogurt or other treat. I've had to re-drill holes and make adjustments, which can be frustrating. Sometimes I've wondered why I just didn't build it from scratch when I have to make a lot of corrections.

I'm hoping it all goes smoothly. I would like to have them done and in place, before everyone arrives tomorrow. If he gets frustrated, he'll just walk away, and leave it for awhile. He usually doesn't have any trouble with putting things together, but there's always something seems like.
 
Quality control is lacking in a lot of chairs and nightstands that need to be assembled. My last nightstand was missing screws. Fortunately, I had several of the correct size in my tool kit, although they had different heads. I just put those in back where they couldn't be seen.

I've been repairing drawers in my kitchen. Two of those weren't assembled correctly to begin with. I had to take them apart, sand them, re-cut the back. If they weren't solid wood, I wouldn't have bothered, but I don't want to replace the cabinets in my kitchen. They will be fine with a little TLC. This is the sort of work that a lot of young people today won't / can't do.

We've just finished with them. Everything went smoothly. The hardest part was getting all the pieces out of the boxes. A very tight fit. Of course, it was hot out there. Feels like 103 right now. I've already got my chairs in place, and everything is decorated to my liking. Just waiting for the new chair throw pillows to come in.

I didn't get to do my freezer meal cooking. Cary needed my help. I'm going to rest and cool off a bit, before starting on supper. A/C is going. House is nice and cool. Sipping on a tall glass of ice water.
 
For those using AI: be sure to keep checking the results carefully. I was looking up ways to to mount outside metal stair railings, and I had a sentence near the end that was just nonsense, something about using white glue. I should've copied it.

Added: I've gone back to looking at youtubes. There's still crap on there, too, but less garbage on the building/remodeling channels. I'm looking for an inexpensive way to add a railing to my front steps (that also meets code).
