Maybe it’s more of being in the south thing!? I know the pantry in the old house there was more of an issue with temp/humidity then what I have now.

Yeah. The heat, humidity, and bugs are a huge problem here in the South, more so than other parts of the country. Mold and mildew are big problems. Cary has to keep the north side of our house and all porch railings sprayed every year, because of all the mildew buildup.

I use way more cornmeal than self rising flour. It was strange that none of the cornmeal molded. Just the flour. I'm so paranoid of bugs that when I take a bag out of the freezer for use, I keep it in the fridge, until it's used up. I've never had any cornmeal or flour go flat as long as I keep it stored in the freezer. I always add baking soda to my cornbread and biscuits anyway when making them.
I put bay leaf in everything I store, repells bugs. Awhile back I ordered a one pound bag of bay leaf and its huge, may last the rest of my life. LOL

God is good all the time.

Hike group meeting went good. Tomorrow I'm taking the grandsons 7 and 8, for a short hike to meet up with my eldest son who is camping out in the woods. Its warming though there is still is some snow. But we will be dressed and packed. Plan to have a small cook and possibly build a small shelter.
I'm going nuts and they are too, for the winter to be over. Some of the group families seem to just want to go the park. Guess we will see who sticks with it. I make it as easy as I can. Last night we covered food and cooking on the trail. I brought a alcohol stove and cooked hot dogs right on the table.
A lot of it has to be taught on the trail. I've taught what to pack in your kit, how to dress, first aid and food/fire. Time to get out and actually do it.
I just bought a book by Horace Kephardt, "Camping and Woodscraft". Its old but still very relevant. Have a stack of Backwoodsman magazines I'm going back over.
Other than that I'm spending nights out in my cabin. With the dogs.

We got our propane tank filled, today. In the process, the truck driver ran over one of the railroad ties that lines our driveway, and broke it, and buried in half way into the mud. Guess, that's going to have to be replaced now. Glad for the fill up, though. Should last us about 2 years, using only one small propane wall unit in emergencies, or when the wood heater is just too much heat during the day, but still need a bit at night.

Our high for tomorrow is supposed to be 80!! Yay! But with rain and thunderstorms. :(

I'm pretty sure those colder days are over with for us. Spring is in the air, along with all the severe weather that comes in with it.
I'm pretty sure we can maybe start planting our garden by the 4th of July this year. A 60-day growing season on a good year is enough for anybody.

If it had not been for this freak ice/snow storm we had, our spring garden would have already been planted. Now, it's warming, but it's been raining constantly. With all the snow melt and rain, we are having some flooding problems around and about, but not at our house. The ground is truly saturated. It's going to be awhile, before ground is ready for planting in spite of the warm weather.

With Cary having surgery soon, I don't think we'll be able to have much of a garden again this year. By the time he is able to till and get the gardens ready, it will be too late for a Spring garden. Nobody to do it for us. We're already eating fresh tomatoes, peas, cukes, squash, green beans, etc. out of our garden by the 4th of July. Hopefully, we can get a late garden in the ground, before it gets too hot.

DH's foot is still acting up, so he decided to stay home this weekend. Better than chancing a wreck. We got tomatoes and more herbs started today, more firewood brought up to the house, and the bigger dog bathed. I had tried, but I just can't wrestle a 100 lb dog into the tub anymore. I got a tincture made up for me, and laundry done up. The pumpkins are now gone - mostly to a friend and the chickens, but they are gone.

I think I got all the items on my February list done, except pruning trees (that might happen tomorrow, we'll see) and scheduling medical tests. I needed to wait until after the first to do that, so it will carry over to March.

you take advantage of any early good weather - but Opening Day in early April is snowed out every couple of years - can't be totally sure of anything ....

Oh yeah. we had a severe ice storm that knocked our power and water out for over a week one year. That happened in April! So, we can't count on it, but I keep my fingers crossed that the cold weather is gone.
