Prep Genrl Weekly Prep Thread: February 2 ~ 8, 2020

Good Morning, All! Just checking in and getting the thread started for the week before I head off to bed this morning. I'm going to try not to sleep too much past 1pm, so that I can still sleep tonight. We don't do the Super Bowl, but I did pick up a rack of ribs for Hubby to put in the oven for an excellent price when I stopped by the store on my way home from work - apparently the wholesaler shipped the store the wrong item, and the meat dept manager told 'em to come and get 'em and bring him the right product; they dickered back and forth for a bit and the wholesaler knocked a good bit off the price - and the manager was kind enough to pass it on to the customers. If they are good, I will go back in and pick up a half dozen to put in the freezer.

I also grabbed a couple more bricks of .22's that our Mag deal watcher caught on sale; can't have too many .22's. I took a quick look at the sale ads; nothing much caught my eye but I may stock up on more laundry detergent for daughter's shop. Possibly some 'manly' smelling body wash as well as Hubby and the boys' stock is getting a bit low. Rural King does have assorted garden seed on sale buy one get one free; I'll have to go in and see what brands they have. I've really been craving beet greens to cut and cook like spinach; wouldn't be too bad an idea to pick up a few packets of inexpensive red ones and plant a little cut and come again patch. Not a fan of red beets to eat the bulb - I prefer the golden ones; but the greens are fine.

Reckon I'd better pry myself off this computer and go soak a few aches out in the tub (and add epsom salts to my 'Watch for sale' list), then head to bed so I can get up in plenty of time to sample those ribs tonight.

You folks all take care, stay safe and stay sharp!

Good morning Renee! I rarely post on this thread, but today I get to be second - woo hoo. LOL
Last week boneless skinless chicken breast & hams were on sale locally so I bought extras, and since my freezer is full I canned a lot. Luckily Albertsons also had Kerr canning jars on sale at the same time (how thoughtful of them, right?).

I need to cook some fresh chicken for my dogs to eat this week anyway, so I'm going to roast a whole chicken today and once it's done it's time to make chicken bone broth (yay for the instant pot!). I figure some nice healthy bone broth is a good prep item in case the nCoV has us sticking around closer to home for a while, so I plan to can some after it's done.

Heading out to lay in a supply of salt crystals for the water softener - and to get a propane tank for the Blackstone griddle. I've been meaning to do that since moving into the new house, but with winter - didn't bother. Now seems like a good time to have one ready to use though because who knows, and we're getting closer to spring anyway so might as well.

I envy your lucky deal on the ribs! Yummm!!! BTW, Amazon's had some terrific deals on laundry detergent lately - worth watching. I check Slickdeals & a site called Dans Deals every morning for a quick scan and have snagged great bargains on dish soap, laundry detergent, and even grocery items. Worth checking them out.

I also expanded my supplies of OTC cold/flu meds - some from Costco, a little from Amazon, and yet some others off of ebay sellers when their price beat the other sources. Often the ebay sellers are resellers who buy health & beauty liquidation pallets from wholesale liquidators who dispose of perfectly good products that have dented boxes etc but are perfectly fine otherwise, so the resellers buy whole big pallets full of assorted stuff that they pay very little for - meaning you can get some very good deals sometimes on ebay.

Good luck everybody and hope you have a great week!

Not that anyone who posts here needs the reminder.... if you haven't been watching the Corona Virus thread, word is that the supply chain maybe going down due to the Chinese containment attempts. Ships are no longer leaving China.

How much it will affect our supply chain is up to debate, but it will affect us.

So if you have any gaps in your preps, be sure to take care of them in the next week or so.

You may not have the chance later.

Going to town tomorrow and need to remember to go to Dollar Tree and SaveALot, in addition to walmart. Going to all three takes a while and I usually end up just about crawling in the front door. I don't have quite 50 pounds of dog food, so I need to remember to get that.

Got up this morning feeling pretty good and fixed a couple of freezer meals. Egg mixture in muffin cups and a large tuna noodle casserole, after what I kept out of that for today, I had nine portions to put in the freezer.

So I had energy this morning to cook but as soon as I ate, which was the egg cups, I could hardly hold my head up and drag around. This is usually how it goes on most days, and then in the evening, along with a half pot of coffee, and I'm good to go for several hours. My goal for tonight is to clean out the fridg in the kitchen and of course wash up all the pots and pans from my cooking this morning.

Made a once-a-year run to sams. Not cheap! I also ordered some herbs - need to order more, but some are hard to find. Working tomorrow, then trying to clean for DD #3's visit with her boyfriend. She's says he's really nervous about meeting me - ha! I'm giving a class Thursday on herbal immune support for cold and flu season. Most of my class is in the home remedies for coronavirus thread if y'all are interested.

Finally made that shopping trip to town. Sav-a-lot, walmart and Dollar Tree. I bought a 12# box of misc bacon for under $12. I will certainly have to divide all that up in small packages and freeze, I thought it was a great price and I bought a 3# package of smoked sausage. I was at Walmart for over 2 hours and could hardly make it out of the store I was in so much pain, hip, back and knees. And finally Dollar Tree, lots and lots of empty spaces. At walmart what was really noticable was the frozen potato section, huge empty spaces and very little product.

I was so tired when I got home that carrying the last of the stuff in the house I tripped and fell against the storm door, hit the side of my fact and really messed up a pair of glasses, fortunately I have a second pair of those glasses. Had to take a nap before I could put much away, which I'm still working on.

I'm telling ya, this coronavirus outbreak has been a real eye opener for me as far as prepping goes! Food storage hasn't been effected, but my medical supplies were found sorely lacking. All has been remedied now all except for one thing....With the seasonal flu, strep, and bronchitis going around my area, we've already shut ourselves off from other people for the next two weeks. Thing is, I now have a UTI, and refuse to go see my doctor. I don't want to break our quarantine, and I'm sure his office is overflowing with sick patients. I have no antibiotics here, and he won't write me a prescription without seeing me first. Does anyone have any suggestions? What are some good antibiotics to keep on hand for things like this?

UTI - depends on what the culture shows; gotta know what the bug is before you try to kill it. Type in Google rxlist.com urinary tract infection antibiotics; it will take you to a page that might be useful (sorry, I'm not great with links.), but you still need to know what is causing the infection.

Might try calling your doc's office and ask if you can just come in long enough to leave a sample

Thanks, Renee. I will go see my doc only if this gets worse as a last resort. I'm too susceptible to catching anything going around to run the risk. I can call, and see if I can just bring a urine sample to his back door, and hand it off to one of his nurses. I get UTI's a lot, and most of the time a round of Cipro does the trick, IIRC.

Someone told me to mix 1 tsp cream of tarter in about 3 oz of water and chug it. Taste awful! Do this twice a day for UTI. I used it years ago when I was too broke to see a dr. It did seem to work.

Thanks, Digger! I have some of that on hand. Will try. I'm wondering about using raw honey, one tablespoon 3 or 4 times a day? Or eating a clove or two of raw garlic? I'm all for home remedies as long as they work. Never have tried them on a UTI, though.

Thank you! I've always taken Cipro for my often UTI. I've never taken Doxycycline before that I can remember. I've made my mind up that I'm not leaving my house to see my doctor. I'm checking out AllDayChemist (Isn't that the name?) to see if I can order Cipro from them. If so, I'm thinking of ordering other antibiotics from them as well.

I'm waiting til tomorrow to see how I am, before trying to go there and order.

Judy, I'm sorry that you fell. I hope you're not too terribly sore.
Sherree, Azo cranberry pills have always helped me. Some people say that it is an old wive's tale that cranberry juice will help cure UTI's --- my Doctor always told me to drink it and as much water as I could get down. Hope you feel better!
I am going to try and make one last big grocery store run in the morning. It will depend on how bad the weather is. I only have like 2 weeks of dog food. And I need to get some gas and kerosene too. I wish I had a clone...

I listed just one pet supply source - there's others - some have choice of capsules/tablets vs packets of drug powders ....
one of the important things to watch is brand names - Thomas and other name brand pharma companies makes the same for human and animals .....

A much safer (unless you are allergic to sulfas) antibiotic which is still effective against UTIs is Bactrim. Alldaychemist carries it, as well.

But you can buy D-mannose over the counter many places (even WalMart) and as long as the infection hasn't gone into your kidneys, it will cure it in short order. Even better, daily use will generally prevent another infection.

I tried a little while ago at Alldaychemist, and a FDA warning sign popped up telling me that I couldn't access the site. Anyway around that?

Huh?! NEVER saw that before! And it comes right up for me! In fact, I just completed an order yesterday...

Try going to Google and click on the link to the site from there.

Also, if you do decide to order, don't freak about the prescription, doctor's name, etc info...none of that is actually required.

you can also order D-mannose from Amazon. I had a UTI a while back and the D-mannose did not help it, maybe I waited too long. Ultimately I had to have an antibiotic. I had not had a UTI in at least 30 years, at least. \\

I think if I even feel a twinge down there I will try the cream of tarter, I have a large bottle.

Thanks Marseydotes, I'm not exactly sore but its been a bad day for pain, just stove up. No bruse on my cheek, just tender, I hit the door hard.

I bought a
FitQuest Flex Express Upright and Recumbent Bike with Resistance Bands

675-197
from HSn, I have a nice recumbent bike but its big and bulky, this one folds and has resistance bands. I'm hoping it will help my knees, bikes are really really helpful for knees, just wish I could convince my precious DH.

I had to take a back road to get in, but finally got it! I had to click on the men's health link to get in. Any other way, I got the same warning, and wouldn't let me click on the direct link. I tried bing and google, both.

Thanks, Summerthyme! I now can order all my prescription drugs on line! YAY!

Good! I'll also say that I've used their e-check option for several years without any problems in terms of security, etc...

I picked up my 2 sheet sets at the local Penny's store. We also did a little shopping. I got extra over the counter meds and some other things. Extra tooth brushes etc. I want to get more, I thought of some things I forgot yesterday. I did not see a lot of empty spaces except in the children's fever reducer. It was low, but I got what I was after.

I got my onions planted before the rain. We are still eating greens from our wildlife food plot. I need to get another pair of leather gloves when we go to the feed store again. I need to get more early crops in the ground. Last year was very wet and this year is wet so far. My garden is heavily mulched, so I can go in right after a rain to plant. This may be the year that our garden is the most important it has ever been.

I found an excellent deal at Goodwill a few days ago. They had a big bag of wide mouth canning jar rings, and I could see a few lids. I don’t use wide mouth jars very often because the lids are so expensive, so I don’t have many rings. I debated whether to get them, but for $2.99 I talked myself into it.
When I got around to taking everything out of the bag, I had a big surprise. There were 2 1/2 dozen brand new wide mouth lids, and 2 dozen regular mouth lids! I got on Amazon to price check them. If I would have bought that many, it would have cost me $57!! So glad I decided to get them.

Had a serious talk with the better half about the virus. I am the doomer of the family and I laid out my concerns. I have us prepped up as much as I can. I just asked that the prep run to the pet store include the purchases for a few months ahead and that we order more kitty litter from Chewy. That was agreed to without argument, so I am very relieved.

Made a couple of stops tonight on the way to and from the gym. Got a dozen cans of cream of chicken soup at Save-A-Lot, and some broth and instant rice (and some chocolate) at Aldis. My initial panic and prepping is over as we are as prepared as we can be, though I would want to add some fresh fruits and veggies if we were going into voluntary self-quarantine, though that is NOT a requirement or a reason to go out if things get bad.

I have one more thing to get, dog food, while I do have some, I need another 50# bag. Yesterday when I went to walmart I had to ask for help three times, and each walmart worker I asked was very nice and helpful. They were out of the 24 pack of walmart water, hopefully they will have resupplied, I don't need it but it won't hurt to add more. I'm not going until Friday. After my four hours of being gone shopping on Monday I've been really stove up. Felt know of yuccky today and stayed in bed and slept for most of the day. This evening I'm feeling fine, just want to give myself another day of not going anywhere before I get the dog food.

This is what I buy for UTIs. It works phenomenally. If I even start to feel the first twinges of an infection, I take two of these every 6 hours. I always keep some on hand.

Thank you. I've seen others have also recommended this. I will order some just to have on hand. I get these UTI's all the time, and to have this on hand might even ward off the infection, before it takes hold. I don't like taking antibiotics. I'm also making out my order to get Cipro and Amoxicillin from Alldaychemist this morning. Amoxicillin is the only antibiotic that Cary isn't allergic too, so I thought I would go ahead and order antibiotics for him as well.

I was browsing Amazon last night and found what I thought was a good buy.

I purchased
Augason Farms Dehydrated Potato Shreds 1 lb 7 oz No. 10 Can
for $8.14, normal price was marked as $21.99

and Augason Farms Dehydrated Potato Slices 1 lb 1 oz No. 10 Can
for $8.08 . No regular price listed so this maybe the normal price.

But with all the loss of potatoes in the fields, I purchased these to
set back if potatoes disappear from the stores or prices go way up..

I have appreciated all the good tips and advice given on this thread,
so I am trying to repay the kindness.

Thanks! That's a good price on the potato shreds! I have several cans of different dehydrated potatoes, but no shreds. I may get an order off today or tomorrow! I'll have to check with Hubby first. I just sent off an order for meds from Alldaychemist. Wouldn't it be nice if we could order everything we wanted at any time? Sigh.

I did the same thing last fall, and I got a really good price on a six can case from LDS. So I may have almost two cases of potato shreds from both places, I thought the prices were good too. And I've also gotten several packages of dried hashbrowns from the grocery store. These still need to be vacuum sealed along with a big pile of other things. Just haven't gotten to this yet. We don't eat much in the way of potatoes though, but we have some. I also got a six can case of dehydrated onions from LDS, more costly, but in line with other places. I also got several small cans of freeze dried green onions from Thrive. They smell absolutely fabulous, but I decided to plant my own onions and garlic back in the fall. I'll plant more onions this spring. I had a couple of bags of onion bulbs (over a year old) and looked completely lost, but I planted them anyway. Surprisingly a lot of them came up.

I enjoy this prep forum, I learn a lot.
