Good Morning, All! I'm just getting the thread started; will be back in a bit!

(It's gonna be one of those mornings - I thought there was something wrong with the coffee pot as it was only about half full (4 cup pot), so I filled my cup, then poured a bit more hot water in the filter. Walked over to the computer to set my cup down and discovered why it was half empty - I'd already poured a cup and doctored it up.... Lord, please have mercy on my brain.)

A couple of years ago I thought I bought enough Goya ham seasoning to float a battle ship. I cooked a one pound bag of great northern beans and added two packets of seasoning to them. The box said one packet for 1/4 pound of beans. The two packets did help season the beans, but they still need something and I don't want to add more of the goya. Salt will help.

My point is I thought I had enough and I don't. That's scary. I do have plenty of dried beans and plenty of salt but it won't go as far as I thought it would. I don't have the funds to do big shops anymore.

I was watching Alaska Prepper last night, he said with the addition of two people to his family his preps won't last as long. His son got married and now has a precious baby.

We visited friends yesterday afternoon, it was nice to get out. We aren't going to church this morning because people at church have been exposed to covid.

My knee is a lot better, praise the Lord.

Some of my homestead “preps” got destroyed by a storm last night. Lost 4 walnut trees that were full of walnuts but the worst is we lost our Persimmon tree that was full of fruit. No way to grow another one that size in my lifetime so pretty bummed about that. Had been hoping to can some preserves. Oh well. Property is a mess. Thankfully all the trees missed our house and outbuildings. One huge branch just barely missed the chicken coop.

Hubby and I went to the local auction house yesterday. I bought 4 boxes that reems of paper come in full of material. I paid $40 for all 4. I got some nice pieces. I also got 2 boxes of books for $2.50 each box. One box had 6 or so books on how to fit patterns. I got many times over my money's worth. The stuff I don't want is going to be donated to the resale sheltered workshop. I also got a mini food chopper for my daughter to make baby food when the littlest gets ready. It was a $1. Hubby bought tools. Most will go to our son. He works maintenance at a factory and his keep walking off. He just gets cheap tools for work now. We had a fun day visiting and getting some good deals.

We got rain this morning. Hopefully the garden will keep producing a little more. I have not had enough tomatoes to can yet. I may have to buy some from the Mennonite farm stand. I still have some canned from the last 2 years. I just don't know how many is enough with things in the world going like they are. Both my kids have very small house payments; under $400 a month. That is a really good thing in this environment. And they are both fixed loans. So hopefully they will be ok financially.

We found formula for our 2 month old grandchild. I guess our daughter being so very sick with Help syndrome affected her milk supply. She planned to nurse like she did with her first, but she was just not producing and nothing she tried helped the volume. After 6 weeks she gave up. So we are trying to build a supply of formula. I can't imagine the anxiety parents are feeling during this formula shortage. But if worse comes to worse, there is pet milk formula. But we bought 5 big cans of formula and her great aunt found 2 cans. Her parents already had a pretty good supply. So I think they are up to about 2 months stocked. I never dreamed we would have to worry about feeding our babies in America.

The hay field is growing with the rains we have gotten. We should be able to cut again. We almost have the new to us bailer ready to try out. We will cut just some junk pasture to try it on. This baler will bale much faster than our old one, so that will be nice for hubby. I have all the first cutting of hay sold, or spoken for at least. The neighbor has not came and got it yet. But she buys my hay from me every year, she will get it.

Well, went out to check on my garden after the hail storm last night......the cantaloupe vines look really beaten down. Don't know if they will perk back up??
:(
They have a total of 12 melons after I picked the one which was big. It is still slightly green, but will, I'm sure, be much better than store bought.

It was not only hail last night, but a drenching down pour of rain......nothing can be done in the garden until it dries up some.

Man!! My neuropathy in my feet from my back being so messed up is KILLING ME TODAY!!! FEELS like someone is sticking red hot BIG NEEDLES in my toes and in between them!! Sometimes it is all I can do to get back to the RV from tje garden.....about 100 yards.

Today I have done NOTHING, but check the garden and feed the animals and it is REALLY HURTING!!!

Could use some prayer if you could spare a minute.
Sorry to be a wimp and complain.......

I got up feeling pretty good this morning. Thank God. It's been a long and trying 2 weeks. I'm still using garlic juice in my ear for another couple of days, but the pain and pressure is almost completely gone.

We got rain last night, and it's in our forecast off and on for the next week. It's really helping our gardens. Cary had to tie up our tomato plants again this morning. They are just loaded with tomatoes. Same for my bell pepper plants. They are taller than I am. I have squash that are almost ready to pick, and the cukes are blooming again. All in all, we may wind up with a satisfactory garden this year after all, for what little effort we put into it. I hate our trial run of green beans didn't produce, but we planted them way too late, and didn't expect much. It was an experiment to see how well they would work growing them on our fence. We've got things lined up really good for next year. I can hardly wait for my seed order to come in!

I dug around in my older freezer this morning and found more ground beef. So, I've got that laying out in the fridge to thaw. I plan on canning that up one day this week. Now that the older freezer is almost empty of meat, I'll be canning more from the newer freezer, too. As I can meat from it, I'll buy more to replace what I take out. That way, we can eat what I can, and keep it rotated out. I wanted to get a good supply canned up ahead, before we started eating it.

We'll be having our Sunday home fellowship, today. It's always good to get together with everyone to discuss world, national, and local events, plus study the Word together! We all have a great time. Everyone leaves feeling refreshed!

Prayers going up for Everyone!

I am so sorry to hear of your damage, drafter; but very glad that you and your family came through the storm safely!

Praying for you for relief from your pain, ioujc...

The formula shortage is ridiculous! I have been keeping my eyes open for my cousin's grandson - I'm usually at the Evil Empire in my work town at least once a week at 7:45 am, and the shelves are bare; same story but different times of day in daughter's town.

So far it's been a pretty great weekend; middle grandson had a JFL (Junior Football League) out of town game yesterday afternoon and made a great play: 3rd quarter, 4th down for the home team, 40 yd line - guy with the ball broke through and had what looked like an open field at 20 yards but grandson put on an amazing burst of speed and got him down. We ended up winning 14/0 - grandson was on cloud nine from all the helmet slaps/pats on the back. His Mama and I were so happy for him that we let him pick where to eat on the way home; he chose Texas Roadhouse and I was happy to foot the bill. I'm looking forward to next week's game; just wish we had the times on it so I'll know if I will have time to nap beforehand. Oh well, I can always sleep in the van on the way to the game!

My plans for today are to clear the kitchen island counter and do some general housecleaning while I wait for the garden to dry a bit; then I need to pick beans again, wash those ones and the ones in the fridge, then plop the dishpan of beans down in Hubby's lap for him to snap while he watches yet another motorcycle race. While he does that, I need to pick tomatoes, then check the corn patch - something is knocking down stalks but the ears are still small. I need to till (not allowed to do it if I'm home alone  ) but I doubt it dries up enough to till between the rows - we got 3/4" of rain overnight. Not that I'm complaining about the rain - no sir!! I've got plenty of weeds that need pulling in the flower beds and elsewhere and they will come out a lot easier since it rained. Then I will start canning up the beans once Hubby gets enough of them snapped - I'll be happy to be in the air conditioning by then!

I noticed that the elderberries are starting to ripen, so I need to harvest some of them. I don't know if I'll have enough to make it worthwhile to drag out the steam juicer, so I may just dry them. I've often wondered if my Great Grandfather's elderberry wine wasn't what kept the family safe during the flu epidemics. Of course, the fact that they lived way back in the hills probably didn't hurt either

I found a patch of Jewelweed in the draw at the end of the road - I want to dig some up and try to transplant it. I'm hoping that the farmer doesn't mow that area so that I can harvest some seed from it later this fall. I'll need to find a damp, shaded area to grow it, but think I have one in a draw north of our machine shed. I'd like to wait for a rainy to transplant it, but there is none in the current forecast for this week, so I may have to wait.

Well, I'm not getting any work done sitting here, so I reckon I'd better get some laundry started and a bit of housework done while I'm waiting for things to dry up.

Take care, all; wishing you all a safe and happy week!

Praying for relief. B vitamins are supposed to be helpful for chemical neuropathy, don't know if they will help for your kind. Might be worth a try.

Yes, an article that I read today said that, as well as foods that cause issues.

Interestingly enough, it said that sodas were one of the major culprits......and what have I recently started drinking again after not drinking them for about six years???

You got it.....SODAS!!

I LOVE THEM!!! I quit before, because that's
ALL had had been drinking for YEARS!!! NEVER drank water!!

Also said that most processed foods....especially with sodium or sodium nitrates can really increase the pain. And for a LOT of the summer, because it has been SO HOT, I had just been eating hot dogs so I didn't need to cook!!! BAD MOVE!!!

However, now that I know, I will change my habits.....breaking myself from soda AGAIN, is going to be a BUMMER....

HOWEVER they are now ridiculously expensive and are COMPLETELY BAD for your body!! They are bone eaters, have NO food value and, the way that I drink them, excluding ALL other beverages except for coffee in the mornings, is REALLY BAD!

I used to work as the therapist for a dialysis clinic, and our Nephrologists said that drinking the dark colored sodas......EXCEPT for ROOT BEER, will eventually DESTROY ANYONE'S KIDNEYS!!! YEP, and I LOVE Zero sugar diet coke!!! Oh, and artificial sweeteners AND SUGAR both cause neuropathy to be more painful!! So, all summer long, I have pretty much done everything, without knowing it, that made my pain worse!!! Hopefully I can change these habits QUICKLY and recover at least to a degree.

On the PLUS side however, I have lost almost 60 pounds since I retired in November of last year, and I have definitely gotten more exercise this summer. Now, just need to make these POSITIVE CHANGES and hopefully I will begin to feel better again!!

Spending a lot of money lately while it's still good. Adding a 12v submersible pump to my well and connecting it to the solar panel system in the outside shed. I have two electric well pumps and two generators with the gas but in winter if the grid goes down it's going to be impossible to heat the well house for months on end and my electric pumps are shallow well pumps and need to be heated.

With the submersible pump and with a weep hole in the supply line I can keep everything from freezing up and can pull the shallow well above ground pump if I can't heat the well house. In addition I'm getting coils of 1/2" pex and 3/4" pex piping for water along with a lot of sharkbite plumbing connectors and those things are expensive. Besides plumbing repair parts I'm making sure I have enough spare parts for electrical issues. Connectors, splice kits, receptacles, circuit breakers etc.

I also pulled my wood stove out and gave the chimney a good scrub and repainted the wood stove to make sure everything is ready for winter. Parts for stuff are going to be hard to come by and things are going to break so as much as you can think of things that can break or need repair and get some parts ahead of time. Some things can break and you can live without them but parts that support food, water, shelter and security along with other essentials of life need to be covered.

Someone on here had posted about Tru Lemon. I ordered some and tried it, it's actually really nice for a bit of flavor. They have the crystalized lemon, orange, and then a bunch of flavors with added sugar and stevia. I think we've liked all that we've tried, although I want to stick to the plain lemon or orange.

What's your blood sugar like?

The main vitamin for neuropathy is Thiamine, vitamin B1, plus pyridoxine (B6). 100 mgs thiamine daily, and 50-150 mgs B6, divided into 2-3 doses if possible.

Thiamine is so important... we had calves born with a syndrome that destroyed thiamine in their bodies... they'd go blind almost overnight, and could only walk if they leaned on walls. Their balance was badly off, and they'd fall easily.

However, too much (1000 mgs a day in humans) can CAUSE the same neuropathies it can cure. Moderation in all things!

I am hypoglycemic. My blood sugar generally
ranges from 60 to, at most, 100. It has been as low as 39, with me walking around, working and doing my normal stuff. It has been this way for at least 25 years. My A1C is always normal.....
according to the blood tests anyway.

The neuropathy I have is due to 2 ruptured discs in my back. I have had problems with it for at least 30 years. I refuse to have the surgery because I was told it will not help by a osteopath and orthopedic surgeon, the day before he retired. He said that now that he was retiring, he could finally tell people the truth. He told me that back surgeries don't work, are a temporary fix, and that people generally end up worse than they already are. I also have severe scoliosis, and spinal stenosis. So, I am basically POOP out of luck.

I don't take any additional B vitamins. Maybe that is an area I need to look at????

I think that orthopedic surgeon should have retired sooner - should have kept up with technology & medical advances - actually attended the med seminars instead of playing golf .....

just the work being done with veterans makes the guy look stupid >>>

Well, this was 30 years ago.

I am also very hesitant because I know MANY people who have had massive issues after back surgery.....my mother never walked again after her back surgery.

There are so many other issues with my back......I just am not confident it would help. The spinal stenosis alone would be impossible to fix.

I'd get another MRI, and a second, modern opinion! I understand... but I also know a discectomy saved my ability to walk (and sanity) almost 30 years ago. I came out of surgery in less pain than I'd been in before they put me under.

Your doctor was right, at least in terms of extensive surgeries involving hardware and spinal fusions. They DO often end up causing more problems... think of it from a purely mechanical viewpoint... if you weld a flex point on a machine to "reinforce" it, the points on either side take more stress... and often break down themselves.

You might be able to find someone who does micro discectomy (1" incision, home the next day for most). It would be worth looking into. Also, if you've never gone through a course of physical therapy, with specific exercises to strengthen the core muscles, and increase flexibility, it would be well worth it! You'll have to have the self discipline to do the exercises at home, but they can make an amazing difference. I've got spinal stenosis and several bulging discs... I've gone from almost totally bedbound to riding my horse every day, along with the gardens, etc. I've still got a long way to go to get back into the shape I want to be... my stamina still needs work. And my legs still get weak or wobbly once in awhile... my spine will never be "normal". But I'm determined to stay as active as possible, and therapy let me do that.

Walked out to the gardens this morning, and we have mustard greens! Yay! No lettuce, yet, and it might not produce, since I used some older seeds for it. I'm hopeful, though. It's still raining. I wanted to save most of my new seed for next spring. Once all the rain stops, and it dries a bit, we will be sowing the turnip seed. I wish I knew where I can buy walking onions. Now would be a good time to plant those. I've checked around locally, and no one has them.

I'll be canning today and tomorrow. I just finished cooking out my first batch of ground beef. I told Cary about canning dry beans/peas along with the ground beef, and he said they would probably taste like what you buy in the cans at the grocery store. "Knock my socks off!!!" LOL! So, I'm going to be buying a few bags of dry black-eyed peas to try canning. If he likes them, I'll can more. The peas and ground beef are both canned at the same pressure and length of time.

I almost had a heart attack late yesterday evening! I had the back doors open, and Cary and Frisco stepped out. Immediately, Frisco stopped and froze. Cary saw what had got his attention. It was a snake beside the tree that grows through our deck (our deck is built around this huge tree)! Before I could get the door slammed shut, the thing tried to get in the house. After it was all said and done, it went up under our deck. I think it was a chicken snake about 4 ft. long. I'm not going to be leaving the doors open anymore. It's getting too dangerous with all these snakes and frogs around.

Your soil may be too warm for lettuce to germinate yet. Many people don't know that seeds have a "zone'" of temps they will germinate in, and too cold OR too warm will prevent it.

Here is a chart... Soil Temperature Conditions for Vegetable Seed Germination - Alabama Cooperative Extension System

I discovered a way to "trick" cool weather seeds into germinating in hot soil... ice cubes! I planted the seeds, then spread ice cubes thinly over the soil above them, repeating it daily for 3 days. Presto! 100% germination! I've used this to get fall spinach crops, as well as getting some cool weather herbs to sprout. I've never seen this trick mentioned anywhere... I simply was desperate to get some stuff to grow the year I had back surgery in May, and everything was super late. But it works!

Several years ago I was mowing out where DH now has his saw mill. I saw a snake and ran screaming to my camper. The mower stayed out there for a good long while and I never mowed again, except right around the camper. DH came along and mowed everything.

That sounds like me.
Years ago, I got out of the truck with my pistol in my hand and there was a snake coiled a couple feet away. I ran screaming for dh, and was not amused when he told me I should have just shot it myself...

It's getting ridiculous around here with all the snakes. Now that we no longer have cats, they seem to be coming out of the woodwork! One of my greatest fears is that one will get in the house, again. I won't be leaving any doors open to catch a breeze from now on. I had an aunt who had one get in her house, was hidden in her kitchen cabinet, and it bit her on the hand. A copperhead, and she almost died, because she was allergic to the anti-venom.

The Amish HATE and fear snakes... they are literally Satan incarnate to them. Their way of stopping them from getting into yards and gardens is to sprinkle mothballs around the perimeter. Probably get expensive for any decent sized area, but it might help keep them out from under porches, or out of your yard.

(They all knew I was weird. But I'll guarantee they did some equivalent of the Sign of the Cross when they saw me walking across our hay fields with a snake in each hand... bringing them to my gardens!)

It helps that I've always lived in areas where poisonous snakes are rare...

My granddaughters all love to catch snakes... if we end up moving south as we're hoping, they'll have to learn some caution.

Cotton mouth are very aggressive and will chase. But you only find them around water
Copperhead s are everywhere but not overly aggressive. They believe in flight not fight. They will also give dry bites
Rattlesnake will usually warn but not always
And coral snakes
Very deadly but very reclusive and their poison is in their saliva so the gotta bite and chew to get it in ya

I was hit above my boot top by a copperhead. That’s wher I learned of dry bites
It’s usually the new born that will give a wet bite

Today is relish making day. Sweet relish for this batch. I got my peppers from the local produce place. As I was picking mine out he handed me a couple for free. They had spots on them but they cleaned up well. Free is good, he just didn't want to throw them out.
This cooler weather is so nice for me and the gardens. I am finally getting some tomatoes and beans coming on. The okra is putting on buds.
Doing laundry and filling donation boxes.
Have a good week!
