Hopefully all have made it through another week. Here we go with a new week. At least the weather looks a bit calmer this week.

Daughter's son is here and helping clean gutters and clean up the yard. He turned out the best of our daughters three children. He works night shift at Ford through the week. He and his wife come here many weekends to see their parents.

Peace out.

We are prepped up but I have been doing some more thinking.
A few days ago I was sewing a leather sheath for the knife I had just made and broke a needle. I had extras but I did order two more packs of needles and more heavy thread for leather. With summer coming I will be in the shop more and likely will be making more knives (I don't sell the knives, I just store them for trade items if things get bad. I must have close to a hundred now).
I guess a person is never done prepping.

Made a supply run this morning to add another month of storage basics to the preps. Will get it in Mylar and buckets this afternoon. My unease at the current situation is pushing me to get stuff done. Yesterday I hit Home Depot and bought supplies for most of the little projects I have planned for the next few months. Won’t get to them all soon but I have the things to do them now.

We got our much needed rain yesterday afternoon and over night. Good soaking beneficial rains, too. No storms. High today of only 66 degrees. It's quite chilly for us, so we had to turn on a little propane heat to knock the chill out of the house. It's going to be a beautiful day, though.

My back is not a bit better this morning. So much pain I can hardly walk. I think I'm going to have to see a neurosurgeon this time. That's how bad it is. The slightest movement sends sharp stabbing pains through my lower back. I'm going to go with Cary, Tuesday, to see our PC doctor for his checkup. I'll see if he can go ahead, and make me an appointment to see the neurosurgeon, even though, I'm not there for him to see me. Since, he is my doctor, too, there shouldn't be a problem, once he sees how much pain I'm in.

Happy Easter! He is Risen!
Yesterday after the first 2 hours of General Conference and then the after the 2ed days talks 1-3 PM our time we were back out into the food storage. We are going through almost everything and getting it arranged better, even putting up signs with years on them of the items on the shelves. Dh's was trying to do it through the years but he ended up putting older things where they couldn't be found easily. This time it is being done much differently. Nothing on the top of the 7 foot shelves that is edible and I can't get to without a step ladder and sitting behind non edible items. :)
Today is listen to the last of Conference and only do what has to be done. Like open the coop, collect the eggs and etc. A day off.
Our area just went through adding 2 more Church wards in the Valley, then 2 weeks later on the 15th of March our Stake was split into 2 Stakes. Hubby had a lot of work to do to get things going for this with still more to do but it is all calming down. The new Stake President for the new one has to call 80 people to fill positions. It is taking a while that's for sure. Not an easy thing to do. My dh will have a lot less buildings he will have to take care of in the way of seeing that all is okay and work that needs done is. That part will be good for him.

Sherree... I'd strongly suggest asking to see a physical therapist first. In general, neurosurgeons want to operate... but surgery should be a very last resort.

Studies show that 95% of cases where there is actually a herniated disk visible on MRI *resolve without surgery* within 6 months. Also, there are multiple studies that show there is little correlation between the degree of "damage" on MRI or other imaging, and the severity of the pain.

Gentle stretches and slowly rebuilding core muscle strength will eliminate most spinal nerve pain. Sometimes, an epidural injection may be needed to break the cycle of pain enough to allow you to do the exercises, etc.

Praying for you...

Summerthyme

He is risen indeed!

Hiwall and Mecoastie, I'm in agreement, and it's sometimes the little things like needles and basics like appliance or porch light bulbs that can make a difference in finishing a project or staying safe. The supply lines are stretched enough that putting aside a few more items like that is prudent!

I ran to Fareway and got an individual slice of cooked ham yesterday. I'll have that with wild rice and steamed mixed frozen veggies. I'm not feeling awful, but my energy levels are low enough that a simple to prepare meal sounds good!

I went to a sunrise service this morning, and I'm going to putter the rest of the day. I may or may not get some more seeds started inside.

Yes. Surgery as an only last resort. My back seems to be out of alignment, too. One hip is higher than the other. I have to walk on my tip toes on one leg just to get my hips straight. I have absolutely no clue as to how this all happened. I want an x-ray done, at least. I'm so tired of having this hip and back pain for so long. Something in there just isn't right.

Listen to Summer, SB. She's right. Building up my core helped a lot of my back problems. There are some things that exercise doesn't address, but solid core muscles are a gift in many ways, including aiding in fall recovery.

But see a good PT. I look for ones that have successful experience in sports medicine, especially with high value football players. They have to use methods that work, not woo. There's too much money at stake.

Added: you don't need a gym! Many moves can be done holding onto a chair or the kitchen counter or while seated.

Will exercise and PT help a herniated disc? That's what I think I have going on.

It’s been raining off and on all day and night here. I’m finally over the stomach bug but Dh has it. I told him not to come home lol and made him sleep on the couch. Didn’t work. I had changed the bedsheets last night but now he’s in there so I’ll be changing them again in a few days. Oh well. It doesn’t seem to have hit him quite as hard as it hit me thankfully.
Just playing this week by ear till everyone is well. I may do an Amazon order for first aid stuff this week though since I can put it on my hsa card.

We served Easter breakfast to between 90 and 100 this morning. Had plenty of help so all went smoothly. Tons of food left which is much better than running out!! We had breakfast casseroles, biscuits & gravy, fresh mixed fruit, muffins and sweet rolls, orange juice, milk and coffee.

The rest of the day has been resting, and supper was egg/cheese burritos. I'll probably regret the salsa about bedtime!

My late dh's back journey started with x-rays, physical therapy, surgery for herniated disk, good for a time, x-rays, MRI, pain meds, spinal cord stimulator, more therapy, shots, nerve burning and finally a morphine pump. He had degenerative disks ... the three lowest in his back. Everyone's journey is different and hopefully yours will be a positive one but to me the first thing should be MRI, so you know exactly what you're dealing with. You don't want to do something that might make it worse. Most doctors do not go with surgery as the first option or even the second option.

Physical therapy has worked for me for three years. I stopped the therapy and issues started back so I've been doing therapy again since the first of this year. Stenosis is my diagnosis. I'm very thankful that I've been able to manage with therapy and being as careful as I can not to aggravate it.

It's currently 49º/feels like 38º and high today was 59º. Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler, and Tuesday has chance of rain/snow then slightly warmer rest of the week. I really need to go to town and shop this week and currently am looking at either Wed. or Thurs. I don't like shopping on Fridays or Saturdays as the store can get crazy. Hopefully the frenzy of shopping by people who get SNAP the first will be over by the 9th. My lists are getting long which makes for a physically stressful shopping trip. I'd like to go to Menards as well as Walmart, Aldi and maybe Dollar Tree if my body holds out.

We worked on and in the gardens today. We got 3 inches of rain on Friday, which we really needed. I'm hoping to plant potatoes tomorrow. The day was beautiful today, cool and sunny.
I made a Walmart list for pickup on Tuesday.
I had my right eye cataract remove 2 weeks ago. So I'm on the downhill side of getting tests and things done before we go on medicare. Dh has great employer health insurance.
That's about it for now. Prayers for all!

Sherree, absolutely do not go with surgery as a first option for your back issues. I have degenerative disks, scoliosis, and stenosis all three. The degenerative disks are in my whole spine now but started in my lower back about 20 years ago. I miss my chiropractor I had for about 20 years. He could do wonders. If a chiropractor won't touch your back, try another one. I've been fighting the scoliosis since I was 10 years old. It would have been a lot worse if I hadn't had an old school osteopathic doctor who still did the back adjustments like you have to go to a chiropractor to get now days.

I spend 30 minutes to an hour at a time stretching and popping my lower back and right hip every day, often two or three times a day in order to be able to stand and walk more than a minute or two at a time. This also involves working my core muscles as part of the routine. I've personally known several people who had the back surgery only to regret it.

I'm not going to win any races, but I still get around without a walker. I can't use a cane until I get my right hand issues fixed. I spent six months using a walker after my foot surgery`and absolutely hated it. If I go shopping, I make sure I get a cart even if I am only getting a few items. It helps me considerably.

Had a good night's sleep last night and still ended up taking a couple of naps today. Not a bad thing since a lot of the body's healing occurs when asleep.

Grandson accidentally locked himself out earlier today. His mother gave him a key to the new locks I installed a few days ago, but he hadn't put it on his key ring yet. When he and his wife left for a while earlier today he forgot to grab the new key. He ended up tapping on the small window in my room to get my attention. He forgot that he had my phone number in his cell phone. My wife and I were the only ones home and she was asleep. As a result she didn't answer her phone. At least the weather wasn't bad when he did this. A little cool and breezy but sunny. The yard is still soggy in spots from all of the rain a few days ago.

Last night I vacuum sealed some bread making ingredients into mason jars using the Food Saver 'jar vacuum adapters' and oxygen absorbers from Amazon.
I have a hand operated vacuum pump for manual backup for the Food Saver 5200 integral electric pump in case it fails on me. Just one small step to stretch out shelf life a bit longer.

The Zoshiroshi bread maker is performing quite well. I'm done with store bought bread with all the ingredients and high price. I now make organic!
A friend gave me a mess of chicken breasts from the food bank. I'm going to pressure can them and store away.

Six more turkey eggs are in the incubator. For the first time ever, I have a turkey hen setting on her eggs.
She's a cross of a broad breasted white meat bird and a Kentucky bourbon red. I'm excited because in years past they always laid an egg and abandoned them. So I had been collecting them and eating them or placing 6 or so into the incubator to become the next years meat. I have two mating pairs of turkey. Last years hatch were processed and canned.

My chicken flock gradually aged out so I bought 20 assorted chicks from tractor supply. Eventually I'll sell some eggs to offset increasing feed costs.
A friend gave me three Chinese geese from his large flock. Two males and a fresh one year old female.

The goose hen is also setting full time on a nice nest of large eggs. The geese make a loud vocal fuss when something is not right at night. They act as a alarm for coons and foxes.

All my civil defense radiation meters are calibrated and tuned up. They are there if I need them. You never know these days.
This winter I repaired the neighbors generator set. I took no money, just a good deed. Last week he came over and gave me a big supply of beef from an American Aberdeen he processed. Huge amount of ground, a nice steak and a roast.
It's nice to do things that way.

New arrangements for the chickens and spring cleaning of the sheds keep me busy.
Trying to get well organized from lessons I learned from the winter storm. I'm grouping items by their kind so I can locate stuff better.

I continue to store gasoline. Once a month I purchase one 5 gallon container at China Mart and fill it all the way up so that little air space is left. I mark the date and shelve it out back where it will stay cool in summer. Been buying regular and ethanol free. Ethanol free is way up now on the eastern shore of VA.
I have a nice supply for the generators now, that I bought at much cheaper price.
It sure pays to prep early and always.

Having another back surgery is the absolute last thing I want to come out of this issue. One is enough. Thing is, when I had my last back surgery, 2 weeks after it was done, I fell and reinjured where I had the surgery done. I went back to see my neurosurgeon. He told me that he couldn't undo the damage that I had done to it. So, I've lived with this pain off and on, since then. I haven't had any x-rays or MRI's to find out just how much damage I did. I have had hip pain for 6 months, without it clearing up. It waxes and wanes. I was told it was just Bursitis. I was making the bed the other day. Something popped in my back with sharp pains. Since then, I haven't been able to put my own pants on or socks and shoes. I can't do anything that requires me bending or twisting. I can hardly walk across the floor. Better yet, one of my hips is setting higher than the other. It looks like something is out of place. Another herniated disc (could be the same reinjured one from last surgery) is what it sounds like to me, but what has caused my hips to be out of alignment?

I will be asking my doctor tomorrow for X-rays and a consult with a neurosurgeon if he thinks it necessary. He might suggest PT for a while to see if that will work. He knows I do not want another surgery if I can help it. I refuse to have the pain shots in my spine.

Weather is a bit warmer, today. High of 72, but cool enough in the house for the propane heater. There isn't much I can do, so nothing is getting done.

A physical therapist told me a few years ago that severe back pain can be caused by the way you position your legs when you sleep. I had a many year habit of tucking one leg up when laying on my side to sleep. I stopped doing that and it worked. I still have issues even when sleeping in my chair because I tuck on leg up when I'm asleep and it causes a lot of pain when I wake up.

I'm still feeling stronger and am able to get a little done, resting inbetween. today I cooked ground meat with chopped onions and a head of cabbage and added seasoning and chicken broth.

It's good to hear from you, Judy. I'm so glad your feeling better. I do miss you being here every day, but I understand you have issues to deal with.

Went to put food away last night and realized I had no idea where my individual meal prep containers were. While looking in garage I spotted the container of paper beverage cups with lids. Grabbed some of those and they worked great. Lined the cups with sandwich baggies, filled them with individual servings, then folded baggie on top. Popped lids on to make sure baggie stayed in place. Wrote contents on top of lid. Now DH can pick and choose to create himself a meal.

Slept late this am and could sleep more if I had the chance. Working 6 hrs today, so not bad.

Brushpile is down to smoldering coals. DH is gonna pick up as many more limbs as his body will allow and take advantage of opportunity to burn. Cool out today aso won't be bad.

It's a sunny Monday in the low 40s. Some idiot weather guessers on the internet are predicting 3 - 6 inches of snow in my area for tomorrow, probably because around this date in 1973 (?) there was a blizzard that dumped 10 inches of snow on Central Iowa.

Most TV stations are predicting a dusting to 1 inch of snow, which is more reasonable for this time of the year. Still, I will cover the onions with milk jugs and keep an eye out. I'm holding off on planting potatoes until the end of the week, mostly because the ground is still very muddy. As long as the first crop goes in by April 15, it should be fine. (They need a good set of roots by the time the 90s and 100s hit.)

Wishing everyone a productive (and pain-free!) Monday.

Make sure to treat that gasoline with PriG or other gas treatment.

Well I'm on the mend! Feel better today than I have since this started although I still don't want any meat. I just don't think I can handle it yet. I had half a cup of coffee this morning while I checked on my babies outside and what dh planted before he got sick. It was so good! I officially now think what is wrong with him is sinus issues. He does this every couple of years and dd is having BAD allergies right now too.
I made me some egg drop soup for lunch just now. Its at least some protein without being meat.
i just started some garden seeds soaking. I have a bunch that got put on a shelf and left out this past year so I'm checking to see if they're good. If not the chickens should enjoy them. Some of them are older so I'm not holding my breath.
I'm going to try and get the kitchen cleaned back up today. Somehow without me cooking or eating its a mess. Other than that I'm just piddlin today. I'll do what catches my attention and needs to be done but still not overdoing it as I'd like to go to quilt guild meeting Thursday!

I had a productive day doing a deep clean of my bedroom. Since the bed cannot be moved (by me anyway!), I had to get on the floor to vacuum underneath, so on the floor and back up numerous times. Then vacuumed the window miniblinds, pulled out the few items I could out pull out to vacuum beneath and moved them back and then back onto the floor to vacuum under the three dressers I could not move and back up again. Up and down a step stool to do the windows followed by physical therapy. I doubt I'll be able to move tomorrow. I still have dishes to do, and I wanted to shower but my legs are a bit shaky, so I'll leave that for in the morning.

My goal for tomorrow (besides a shower :lkick:) and Bible study is to transplant my pepper and tomato starts. The peppers are looking good, and the tomatoes have caught up with them so are ready for transplanting too. Not a favorite job but a must do and I'll be glad I did it in May when it's time to put them outside. I'll also wash a load of towels/whites after my shower.

I'm attempting to get more self-discipline into my housework where I clean one room a day and a deep cleaning every couple of months. I'd also like to get back to sewing at least three hours a week and maybe starting a quilt with the closet full of fabric I've been ignoring for several years. I'm thinking if I schedule time for various things without overloading any one day, I might achieve something beyond the minimum necessary chores. I've managed to stay current with my Bible in a year reading, daily devotions and physical therapy started in January which gives me some hope I might be able to change my habits to something more productive.

Wow, @anna43 ! You're a busy woman. I bucketed up about half a tote of chicken feed yesterday, and I did not want to get out of bed this morning! They have torn up multiple roads around me (all done by different agencies - county, city, and state), so getting anywhere is a tad frustrating. The state plans well, really the county even does too - letting people know weeks ahead of time, and marking detours well. The city..... well, at least there weren't any wrecks this morning!

I managed to sell a Kitchenaid mixer to a coworker, and get rid of a few ebay items. I'll call it a win for today!

Yesterday I cleaned out two refrigerators, the larger one needs the shelves washed, hopefully today, I filled over 3 five gallons of stuff to throw away, it’s been over a year since I’ve been able to do that, yea me. Today I’m going to work on the living room, where I sleep.

And I slept longer last night, although I did wake up at 4:00 am to pee.

It's warming back up, nicely. 76 for our high, today. Cary has a DR. appointment after lunch.

My back and hips are lots better this morning. I can dress myself. Walking is no longer painful. My back still catches with me if I move in a certain way, but, overall, it's much better. Hoping and praying that this issue will continue to heal. I have an appointment with my rheumatologist next month, and I'm still going to demand an x-ray. He has recommended an orthopedist, before, so if he suggests it this time, I'm going to take him up on the offer. This same issue keeps happening too often.

I'm not going to mention my back to our PC doctor, today. Cary reminded me that the last time I had an appointment with him he told me I needed to contact my rheumatologist.

Got the litter boxes clean! That was a chore as they haven’t been done since I got sick. Ds didn’t get back in town till late Saturday night and said he would do them Sunday but…. His cat was so happy to see me come with that bucket and scoop and that cat hates me lol! Kitchen is clean and I’m sitting down now for a few minutes. Decided on a pork loin for supper. Not sure if I can eat it yet but I’ll be able to handle some veggies and Dh is hungry.
He took the rest of the week off. He’s feeling better just doesn’t want to take a chance on sharing it with his crew and he’s available by phone if they need. He never uses his sick time so has plenty accrued.

Another busy day both at home and with paying work.

My little tree has lots of buds! I hope this is going to be a good growth year. If not, it's going to get replaced for morale reasons. It's the only tree in the front yard, and I want a nice, bushy one that the birds can use. The new honey locusts around town didn't look great at the end of last year, so it just may not be the best tree for this area, but I'll feed it on schedule and give it another summer.

My other concern is an ongoing windshield wiper problem. I bought new ones last fall, and they are already shredding rubber. I used to get 2+ years out of them. Now, it seems like I have to replace them every six months. I will do more research. It's happening with several brands: Rain-X, Trico, and Goodyear. Also, I keep my car in the garage, not outside 24/7.

Cary got a great report, today. Doctor prescribed another round of Meloxicam for me. Yes, I mentioned my back and hip problem. He still wants me to see my rheumatologist with it. The Meloxicam is just to help, until then. He gave us sad news, today, though, He's retiring in September. There are 3 other Internist in the office with him. We'll need to decide which one of those will be our new doctor. I sure hope we don't run into problems with the one we choose. They are all younger doctors.

Anyway, we stopped in at Sam's to fill up the SUV. Went to Cary's favorite donut shop for a dozen donuts. Went on to Chick fil A for supper. Just now getting home. We're counting down the clock, til 7pm our time for Trump to do what he's going to do. I haven't checked the war thread, yet, so there could be a ceasefire called for all we know.

The turmoil in the world has me a little concerned so I went to the walmart website today and thought I might order a little more long term storage food. They were out of stock on just about everything!
So I went directly to the Augason Farms website and thought I might place an order. I ordered nothing because they had almost nothing in stock! Out of all the different things they sell, only 17 were in stock.

It should reach 80 degrees, today. 80+ degrees for the next 8 days. No rain. Even though, we got a good rain the other day. our drought still lingers. Burn bans haven't been lifted.

I'm still nursing my back and hip, but if I can hold out, today is bread baking day. I also have laundry to do. I'm going to let Cary do the floor sweeping for me. He just doesn't know it, yet. He will do it if I ask him too, but I don't ask very often.

He is going to mow, today. He's got all the new firewood stacked, and we're waiting on the last load to be delivered. It might be this Fall, before the man gets it to us. He mows yards for people in the community during the Summer. He can't do both. He also raises chickens for eggs and meat birds, so that keeps him busy, too. He told Cary that he has 200 laying hens. He sells to the public.

We had a good Easter weekend. Egg hunt at church Saturday. It was pouring rain, so the egg hunt was inside. Both my kids families came. Then we had dinner at church Sunday after service.

Our son and his family spent the weekend at the farm. Our son actually spent Thursday night here too. He has a different work schedule being in maintenance. They got a lot of weed eating and weeding done on their plants. He and his wife each found a ripe strawberry. They said it was delicious. They are planning to move into the travel trailer here soon. Probably after the oldest boy graduates in May. He will stay in their single wide trailer and go to college and they will move here and try to get the farm up and running.

Our son in law is no longer working at Tyson. He was very unhappy at his job and child care was an issue lots of times. He had only had 3-4 vacation day approved over the last 2 years. He would end up selling his vacation back to Tyson for the money, but he missed a lot of things because he couldn't get off, even with applying 2 weeks or more ahead. They won't pay for your earned time off that is in addition to your vacation. He just lost all that. They had been thinking and planning for one of them to stay home. Our daughter likes her job and just got a $3.05 raise, so she will work and he is Mister Mom for now. He is hustling for odd jobs that he can do when our daughter is home with the kids. So far he has an agreement to do the lawn care at the rental next door to them. He has done 2 one time gigs already too. His full time job just ended last Thursday. I hope it works for them. I still want to get the kids once a week. Right now Hubby is not feeling well and I haven't either. We will see about later in the week.

Hubby finally got his bushhog finished and out of the shop. He used it some and it is working much better. Our son helped him some on Thursday. I have been his help the rest of the time when he needs someone. That's another big job completed.

I sprayed the fruit trees Monday. We checked the orchard map we made to do some corrections. One cherry tree died that was planted last year. It was replaced with a nectarine and another nectarine added close to it. My potatoes are starting to come up and I started sweet potatoes slips. We got 2 inches of rain Friday night and Saturday. That helps, but we still need a lot more to break the drought we are in.

My setting hens I moved after dark did not settle back on their nest. I pulled all the eggs and added 5 more hens to that pen. I plan to collect the eggs and set them in my incubator. I need some young hens this year. I have some mixed hens in the flock so I only pulled the pure Buffs to collect hatching eggs.

Have a blessed day everyone.
